  1. 'I have seen your charity in her name, Mama should not be forgotten.' The note was short and to the point, no love for Ilya from his brother was scrawled into the familiar letters. But there was love for their mother there, and there was the fact that Andrei had sent it at all. - Ilya's brother sends a parcel containing home video from Ilya's childhood to Canada. Ilya never expected to receive a parcel from his brother after five years of no contact, and He never expected to hear his mother's voice again.

  2. While David rifles through the pantry, Ilya takes a deep breath. This is not his family. He’s here for Shane, because Shane needs him. He doesn’t—he needs to be the steady one right now. Because if Shane sees him freak out then Shane will just freak out more, and that’s not fair. Especially not when, objectively, intellectually, Ilya knows that there’s nothing to freak out about now. But the truth is, Ilya is nervous. or, ilya and david share a moment while shane and yuna go outside. set during s1e6.

  3. "Do you like spicy food?' David asks. American spicy was always questionable. Ilya's been to restaurants where the pinnacle of spice was ominous salty, orange, vinegar-y sludge souped over chicken wings. But he's also had his fair share of dinners cooked by Marlow's wife who put exotic peppers in rice. When he tried to cool the fire burning an ulcer in his belly with her homemade drink, he was disastrously surprised by the added torture of ginger down his throat. "Yes," he lies, coolly. Because now was not the time to be an asshole. David Hollander just watched him press his son up against a glass door and caress him in ways no parent needs to see. Ilya can take the stupid gamble on what the man calls spicy.

  5. One shot for S1 E6 when Yuna & Shane are having a heart-to-heart outside and Ilya & Mr. Hollander are left alone at the kitchen table. Ilya’s got this. Ilya grasps the cool tumbler of, what do they call it—liquid courage—as Mr. Hollander smiles back at him awkwardly. Though he is seated at the table, Ilya’s legs feel wobbly, and his heart feels both light and heavy. Did he and Shane just confess their love out loud? To other people? Everything is happening all at once. Does Shane need him? This is a lot. No, Shane and his mother need their space to process things together. Ilya is right where he needs to be, and he’s approaching this entire situation with calm. This is Shane’s world. Ilya knows and respects how close he is with his parents, and under the circumstances, things could be a lot worse. Mr. Hollander is the first to break the silence. “Again, I’m sorry about, uh, before,” he mumbles. Ilya takes a sip of his vodka. “Before? You mean, at the cottage.” Mr. Hollander nods. “Yeah, I had no idea. Obviously.” “It happened,” Ilya shrugs. “You didn’t know. Maybe we owe you the apology.” Mr. Hollander chuckles. “I don’t see why. You’re grown men. That’s Shane’s place. I intruded.” “Still, you were surprised. Fortunately, I saw you before, er, uh…” Ilya stops himself before he says something he knows Shane would find utterly embarrassing. “Yeah, close call,” Mr. Hollander clears his throat. “But we’re here now. And Yuna’ll be okay. She’s in shock. She and I process things differently. I’m not worried. When Shane says something, he means it. When Shane wants something, he doesn’t give up.” Ilya smiles at this. It’s something he’s known since Shane told him not to smoke outside of the arena when they first met. The guy has guts. “We have that in common. And I do love your son. Very much.” “I believe you, Ilya. And I’ve watched you grow as a player over the past few years. Now it makes sense why Shane always watched all of your games so intently. I thought it was all about the rivalry you two have. Now I know differently.” “Probably both things,” muses Ilya. “Can I get you something else to drink?” asks Mr. Hollander, likely noticing that Ilya has now drained his glass. “Let me show you my collection.” Ilya picks up his empty tumbler and follows Mr. Hollander out of the kitchen. He glances over his shoulder and through the front window where he can see Shane and his mother speaking intently with one another. It’s a promising sign. Shane has taught him to no longer fear the power of communicating. Ilya is now standing across from Mr. Hollander in a wood-paneled room with numerous shelves filled with books, pictures of Shane as a young boy, and what appears to be an extensive record collection. Ilya’s father had a room like this. There’s also a dark mahogany cabinet with an assortment of liquor bottles that Mr. Hollander is sifting through and a table with a crystal tray of additional glasses. Ilya is immediately drawn to a framed picture of Shane in a school uniform of sorts. He’s probably around seven or eight years old, and he’s missing one of his front teeth. It might be the most adorable thing Ilya has ever seen. He has half a notion to pocket the picture. “That was Shane in second grade. He’d just lost his tooth that morning and was angry the photographer made him smile. But he was over it by the next day. The tooth fairy paid him handsomely.” Ilya laughs, brushing his finger over Shane’s awkward smile and prominent smattering of freckles. “In Russia, we have the tooth mouse. Similar thing. My mother made sure to always leave a treat for us. Of course, I didn’t know it was her at the time,” Ilya says warmly. “But what do you do with the teeth? This has always made me wonder.” Mr. Hollander looks unsure himself. “We’ll have to ask Yuna. I have no idea. What about your mom. Is she still in Russia?” ”No,” Ilya shakes his head. “She died when I was twelve.” ”Hey, I’m sorry, Ilya. And I’m sorry about your father, too. Heard about his passing on the news.” ”Thank you. Shane was a big help to me afterwards.” Mr. Hollander nods and reaches for Ilya’s glass. “How would you feel about trying some whiskey?” “Sure,” Ilya agrees. “Let me get you a fresh glass.” Mr. Hollander fills a clean tumbler about a third of the way with a light brown liquid and hands it to Ilya. “It’s one of the things we’re known for here in Canada.” Ilya takes a slow sip and gently sloshes the liquid around in his mouth. “It’s good. Smooth.” “I’ll send you back with a bottle.” “Thank you.” ”I’ve been telling Shane for years that it’s better than ginger ale.” Mr. Hollander pours himself some as well. “It was brave of you to come here.” ”I was happy Shane agreed to let me. I’ve never done this before. You know, meeting the parents.”

Between festive fluff, stolen kisses, and a spicy mischief right in front of Elf on the Shelf (omg scandalous), Ilya realizes he’s never felt this much at home before. AKA Lots of fluff, a little smut (including some light spanking for Shane), and then fluff again :P

  8. Do you ever feel depressed? Ilya paused again. Yes, but why would a dentist need to know that? What if this dentist told the rest of the team medical staff, and they benched him or took away his captaincy because he was depressed? He checked no. Ilya gets a dental cleaning and has to confront the fact that maybe he is not managing his depression as well as he thinks.

  9. “Ilya hasn’t been very well recently.” Shane swallowed, he hated saying that out loud, “Not for a long time actually.” ~ Ilya's depression is flat, still and cold like water, sometimes he thinks it might drown him. The Hollanders are here to help him float. (Or Ilya has a bad day, Yuna notices, and in the Hollander household love and support are given by force.)

  10. Just like every season, the Ottawa Centaurs organise a family day. And just like every season, Ilya intends to skip it. He's convinced otherwise and surprised once he gets there. Set between Heated Rivalry and The Long Game, but not spoiler-free for TLG. “Fine,” Shane said, leaning in to kiss Ilya. “But you’ll have to go to the Centaurs’ family day, or this is all off the table.” If this was how all blackmail worked, then Ilya was suddenly very much a fan of the concept. “I will go to the Centaurs’ family day,” Ilya promised solemnly. “And then you will be naked in a hotel room for me. Are you happy now? Can we continue making dinner?”

  11. Ilya stands in the hallway of Shane’s parents’ house with his boots still on, shoulders slightly hunched, fingers worrying the sleeve of his sweater. He’s been here before, plenty of times, but tonight feels different. Tonight means something. Christmas lights glow along the banister, warm gold reflected in the windowpanes, and somewhere deeper in the house there’s the low murmur of voices and the clink of dishes. He leans toward Shane and whispers, for the third time since they parked the car. “Are you sure it’s okay? Like, really okay?” Shane smiles at him, soft and fond, the way he does when he understands exactly what’s going on in Ilya’s head. He cups Ilya’s elbow, thumb brushing reassurance into skin. “Yes,” he says gently. “They want you here. I want you here.” Ilya nods, even though his chest still feels too full, like something might spill over if he breathes wrong. Christmas with a family. A real one. Not a hotel, not a team dinner, not a quiet night pretending it doesn’t matter. This matters so much it scares him. - Ilya's first Christmas with the Hollanders.

Ilya tutted. “Uhm like Father Christmas- Santa Claus, yes? Only, on New Year. Old man visits home, walks through front door, and greets children with present. Less creepy than Santa Claus.” Shane furrowed his eyebrows. “You think Santa is creepy?” “Listen to song, Shane. He sees you when you’re sleeping- knows when you’re awake..” Ilya waved a hand and scrunched up his face as he gently leaned over to inspect the small Christmas village people. “He watches like some pervert.” Shane surprises Ilya by decorating for christmas....Shane gets railed....and Ilya makes the Hollander parents cry.

  16. “Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-” Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes. “Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.” “Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away. “Is okay. Slow words. Okay?” This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia.
