  1. “Don’t–” Ilya starts, already reaching, already cupping Shane’s face between both hands, thumbs warm and tender against his cheekbones like they’ve always belonged there. Shane’s eyes are big and gorgeous and genuinely curious. “Don’t what?” Don’t make me look like a lovesick idiot. Don’t make my heart trip over itself for a way out of my chest and into yours. Don’t say it like that—so fucking sincere—like you don’t know how devastating it is for me. “Don’t butcher my language,” he says instead and kisses Shane’s smile hard, like reflex, like gravity, like there was never going to be another option. - Shane sets out to learn Russian. Ilya discovers he's incapable of keeping his composure.

  2. Except Shane just sighs, hanging his head shyly and rubs the back of his neck, “I…I didn’t mean to leave that out, you got here early last night, surprised me so I just threw it down there, god, this is uh, not how I imagined you would find out.” “Find out what?” Ilya breathes. “That I’ve been learning Russian since the first time I sucked you dick.” It’s unusually brave of Hollander, and Ilya can’t help feeling that the normal roles they play have been severely flipped. ~~~ Caught reading a trashy Russian romance novel, Shane and Ilya behave exactly as expected (they fuck about it)

Shane Hollander learns Russian in secret, eventually it’s not a secret anymore. Shane Hollander was anything but a slacker. He took everything in his life seriously. He woke up at 5am for his morning run, then he’d spend half an hour in his home gym before showering, eating a well balanced breakfast, and heading to the rink for whatever the team had planned that day. He took his routine seriously, and in turn, everything else seemed to fall into place. He was fast, on his feet and on the ice. He was strong, to the point where he could effortlessly pin some of the biggest guys in the league to the boards and slip the puck off their stick and onto his own. He even managed to finish his daily sudoku in about 5 minutes every day. He took to French like a fish took to water, that’s why he was so frustrated when he first started picking up phrases in Russian. He couldn’t manage to wrap his mind around the language at first, couldn’t make his mouth move correctly to get it just right. He spent hours staring at himself in the mirror trying to find the right way to move his mouth for different words, recording his own attempts and comparing it to the audio guide on the app he’d downloaded. He’s not sure why he started learning Russian, maybe it was to get an edge over Rozanov, to know what he would mutter on the ice, or whisper against his neck as he pushed inside of him. Or maybe it was because he had two teammates who spoke Russian and he was the captain, he couldn’t have his teammates feeling ostracized, could he? (They had little to nothing to do with his decision, but he refuses to acknowledge that). He had come a far way from where he was the first year, where he used to stumble and trip over the pronunciations, he now glided through them perfectly, at least that’s what the teacher he had hired around year 2 said. He felt confident he could carry conversations now, banter back and forth with his friends. He doesn’t know for sure, because the only person on the planet that knows about his Russian hobby is his teacher, Tonya. They had just finished their session for this week, he always felt strange after a session, a weird ball of guilt and shame welling up in the pit of his stomach he didn’t fully understand. It might have something to do with the Russian currently texting him, but he tried to block that out. Lily: Are your legs still shaking from last time? You skate like baby deer tonight. He rolled his eyes before typing his response Jane: Fuck yourself, I was skating fine. He was, it wasn’t his best night, and it pains him to admit it, but he’ll play better on Friday and that’s all that matters. He still scored a goal and got an assist. Lily: You will be shaking again in a week, yes? ;) Jane: Someone’s full of themselves. And he knew the second he sent it, he had walked right into a trap, he expected the response before he got it Lily: You can be full of me too. Shane turned his phone off and felt the flush creep up his cheeks. He should be used to the comments by now, but he’s not. And it’s only gotten worse since he’s started learning the others native tongue. All the whispered comments he makes, the words grazing his skin as he takes him apart. Sometimes he feels guilty for not telling him he knows what he’s saying, and then Rozanov calls him beautiful again and his brain shuts off. Before he’d thought whatever he was saying would be dirty, so filthy that Shane wouldn’t even want to know, and there are plenty of dirty things that have tumbled out in Russian, but mostly it’s soft praise ‘you’re so gorgeous’, ‘your little noises are beautiful’, ‘my pretty boy’. It might be one of the reasons he still refuses to tell him he knows, because what if he stops saying them? He puts all his things back where they belong, his Russian language book goes back in the bottom drawer, stuffed under two hockey biographies he knows nobody will care to read if they end up snooping, and his notebook filled with phrases, tips and notes gets put back in a bag that sits on the floor beside his desk, filled with random papers and forms. As he walks around his house that evening he’s practicing what they had went over in his lesson, wrapping his tongue around the words until they feel perfect before moving on to the next. Maybe he’ll finally work up the courage to tell his Russian teammates soon, then they could talk to him without trying to grasp the correct words after a particularly hard game, or a gruelling workout. Probably not, but it would be nice. ==== He was making an early lunch for himself before an afternoon practice when he stubbed his toe on the island, it happened without him even noticing at first. He had been going over some of his notes, and was practicing a few phrases he had heard in a post game interview with a Russian goalie on Washington’s team. So it wasn’t that surprising when he muttered a quiet “fuck” in Russian. He was actually a little proud, curse words had been one of the first things he learned, before he fully committed to his secret lessons, he would listen to certain words Rozanov would say, wether it was a whispered praise just for Shane’s ears, or a frustrated exclamation during a game, he would file it away and repeat it in his head until he got somewhere he could search it up. Rozanov’s favourite seemed to be “fuck”. Which Shane understood, it sounded rough, and aggressive, it felt dull in his mouth whenever he had practiced, different to English cursing. Not to mention it worked for most settings the Russian would curse in. Shane hadn’t thought twice about his slip up, just rubbed his foot and went on about fishing up his rice and chicken before heading out for practice. Nobody was around to hear him, it was nothing.

“Say something.” Ilya asks “in Russian. For me.” Then softly, carefully, he does. “Я всё ещё скучный.“ I’m still boring. He tried to add humour to it. But he doesn’t know if it reached. Still, Ilya's breath catches.“Oh.” He says like he’s just been handed something precious. “You’re perfect.” Or, Shane had been learning Russian the whole time.

  17. “But yeah,” Shane continues, “tell him I’m not mad. Well, not about the accident, at least. I’m mad about him for ruining our plans last night.” He smiles sheepishly. “Sorry I didn’t text.” I’m sorry I didn’t text last night, by the way. I was looking forward to our plans last night. I’m mostly mad at Marlow for fucking that up. I was gonna ask you— “Ilya? You good?” Shane pulls back the hand Ilya was holding to poke him on the chest. (He seems to be under the impression that the last game he played was against the Boston Bears.) -- Ilya goes through seeing Shane unconscious on the ice again, and people try to convince him that they are going to be okay.

  19. Fuck, he couldn’t let Hollander see him like this. An echo of his fathers voice played in his head, “ты слаб, Ilya.” You are weak. —— Ilya has a hard time accepting help from anyone, especially when he’s sick. Good thing Shane Hollander doesn’t take no for an answer. Ilya arrived at the cottage before Shane. His boyfriend had one more game in the afternoon before he could get there for their long weekend getaway so Ilya had packed for both of them and made the drive himself. It was weird being in the cottage by himself, he thought as he put their bags down and stared out the window admiring the view of the lake. Then his stomach churned and he groaned walking away to sit down heavily on the couch. He’d started to feel…not well this morning but he insisted that Shane go to his game and he’d powered through the long drive to get here. The cold, clean air of the cottage would be good for him, he thought, and anyway it's not like Ilya ever got really ill. Shane was a different story with his weak stomach and frequent migraines that he’d inherited from his mother but Ilya was always healthy. A workhorse, his father had said once. Strong, Capable, Dependable. But maybe, he could just take a little nap now he thought to himself as he lay down on the couch and closed his eyes. That way he’d be ready to ravish his boyfriend when he showed up. He woke up hours later to darkness and a pounding in his head. Ilya squinted, grabbing for his phone. It was already six pm. Fuck, Shane would be here soon. It took too much effort to swing his legs off the side of the couch and he swayed as he stood up, holding onto the back of the couch for support. “Blyat,” he cursed under his breath as his head throbbed and his vision blurred dangerously. His stomach lurched and he remembered why he’d woken up in the first place. He rushed to the bathroom and made it just in time to fall to his knees on the tile and puke up his meager lunch. Trembling, he stood up and hastily brushed his teeth with shaking hands. Fuck, he couldn’t let Hollander see him like this. An echo of his fathers voice played in his head, “ты слаб, Ilya.” You are weak. Ilya carefully made his way back to the couch, trying not to irritate his stomach or his head anymore than he already had. He sat perched on the edge of the couch, head in his hands, until he heard a knock on the door. Shane let himself in and Ilya stood up, trying to muster up a proper greeting. “Hi,” he breathed. He must have failed because Shane’s smile faltered and his hands came up to cup Ilya’s cheeks. “Are you feeling okay?” He said, his brow furrowing in concentration like Ilya was another puzzle for him to solve. Ilya pouted at him, “now you say I look bad.” “No, no, not that it’s just…you're really pale, are you sure you're okay?” Ilya sighed, “I was a little sick before, I’m fine now.” Shane looked like he didn’t believe him so Ilya pressed forward, crushing their mouths together and raising one hand to grip the back of Shane’s head, running his fingers through his hair. At the small noise his boyfriend made in response Ilya instantly felt better. He stepped back, pulling them both towards the couch when a sudden sharp pain went through his head. It felt like someone punched him in the skull and Ilya dropped Shane’s hands, swearing and sitting down on the couch as the room spun. “-lya?” Shane was saying, his fingers tugging at where Ilya had his head buried in his hands. “Are you okay?” Shane said. All he could do was shake his head carefully in response. Shane sat down next to him on the couch, rubbing comforting circles on his back until Ilya was able to speak again. “Sorry.” ты слаб “No,” Shane insisted, “don’t be sorry, fuck its my fault, I thought you looked sick this morning and I left anyway.” “I’m-” he started to say before Shane cut him off. “If you say you're fine, I swear to god Ilya.” “Okay,” he muttered, a small smile curling at his lips, “Mr. Nurse.” “Whatever,” Shane huffed, he pressed the back of his hand to Ilya’s forehead and Ilya leaned into it despite himself, the cold felt so good. “You're burning up,” Shane pointed out. Ilya hummed in response. “Okay, let me see what meds we have here,” Shane said, standing up and walking away towards the kitchen. Ilya missed him immediately. He returned a moment later with a glass of water, a handful of little red pills, and a thermometer. “Open,” he said, holding up the thermometer.
