  7. “Well, if it’s not too much trouble,” Shane begins, offering his cell phone to one of Santa’s helpers who remains on standby. “Can I—can we get a couple of photos with you?” “Oh, but of course,” Santa cheers happily, clasping both gloved hands together as Shane moves to sit on his left thigh. “I would be honoured to snap a photo with the Shane Hollander.” Ilya, on the other hand, nearly goes into cardiac arrest. It's days after Christmas and Santa Claus is still working dutifully at the mall. There's just one problem, though: Ilya Rozanov is fully convinced that Santa Claus wants his man. It’s been a little over five months since Shane and Ilya have been official, and it’s almost inconceivable how... easy it has been for them. Opposites attract. Soulmates. Ilya has always believed those two sentiments were rather cliché, terribly intangible things, pathetic worldviews that took shape entirely from skewed perceptions and damn-near daunting desperation; but now that he’s living it—now that he’s nothing more than a walking testimony, it would be foolish of him to deny the harsh truths that manage to dismantle the solidity of his nervous system every day. Truthfully, it can be described as a puzzle piece that fits perfectly—two kindred souls that were fated to meet, destined to be in each other’s lives, their union that was seemingly written among the stars above. And here Ilya’s kindred soul stands before him—a bashful smile tugs at Shane’s lips as he raises a hand to press a wrinkle from the lapel, a palm smoothing over the material before he adjusts the article of clothing that hugs his body just right. But there’s just one thing that Ilya cannot ignore. He feels the warmth against his palm and cocks his head to the side, his lips pressing into a thin line. “I thought you said you hired a stylist, Hollander?” The implication cuts through the air like a knife, the sharpened edge of it aimed straight for Shane’s jugular— —but it all comes from a place of love, of course. There’s something about the fashion choices themselves (yes, plural) that Ilya cannot get behind. Shane slowly spins, as if he’s giving Ilya a chance to get a good fucking look at him, as if he’s allowing Ilya to recognise his greatness and to take back what he said. Come on, look at me! Shane’s eyes seem to say, glinting with offence that Ilya refuses to take seriously. Why would I need my damn stylist? “Uh? I did?” Shane huffs, throwing both hands up in mild exasperation. “They’re—I gave them two weeks off for—for obvious reasons. It’s the holiday season, and I don’t have anything important going on. Why?” ‘Why, he asks. Ilya closes his eyes. Opens them. Then closes them again. This is going to be a long day. “Two weeks off, huh?” Ilya sighs, nursing his cup of hot chocolate. “Of course you did.” Shane raises an eyebrow. “What? You don’t like it?” The outfit in question... well. Ilya glances at the baby blue wide-leg slacks that Shane somehow deemed appropriate for the occasion and frowns visibly, grunting with a shake of his head. He lifts his gaze to the white dress shirt that’s been buttoned all the way to the top, the crocheted, dark grey scarf around his neck and the beige blazer that, arguably, fits him well—but that’s about it. The colour of the material leaves much to be desired. As does everything else. “Ah, don’t worry, Shane,” is what Ilya settles on. “It is endearing, rather than. Stylish. Or interesting.” Shane appears to be mildly horrified. “Endearing.” “Yes, endearing,” Ilya affirms, leaning to the side to place his cup on the surface of the end table. “You look like a twelve-year-old going to a uh—a school dance or something. Trying to impress friends and all that. Or perhaps... trying to impress a crush. So, yes—I think it’s endearing.” Shane frowns. “Rozanov.” “Ilya,” he corrects him firmly, knowing full well that Shane has a tendency of calling him by his last name when he has decided that he’s annoyed with him. Ilya swallows around the lump in his throat, watching as Shane swiftly swaps his horrid fashion choices with his sponsored Lululemon set that does very little to combat the harsh wintry chill on the outside. “Where are you going?” “Where do you think?” Shane snaps, grabbing his wallet on the countertop. “I’m going to the mall.” “The mall?” Ilya asks, puzzled. He takes a step closer and shoves both hands in the pockets of his joggers. “It is colder than Grandfather Frost’s ass crack outside. Why are you going to the mall?” Shane slowly turns to look at him. “What do you mean by why? You just insulted the clothes I was planning on wearing to dinner with my parents tomorrow,” Shane speaks through gritted teeth, gesturing to the clothes that have been tossed carelessly on the cushion of the sectional. He couldn’t even be bothered to fold them—that’s how Ilya knows he’s pissed off. “I need something else to wear, obviously.” The room falls silent.

a little drabble of shane and ilya post-talking to shanes parents ----- Shane sighed as they pulled into the driveway of the cottage, putting his head down on the steering wheel and closing his eyes. “God,” he whispered. “I’m so… tired. I feel like I just ran a marathon.” Ilya laughed, bringing up a hand to touch Shane’s hair. “What you just did was much more difficult than a marathon,” he said. He couldn’t help the soft smile that was forming on his face, but he didn’t want to resist it. He didn’t have to anymore.

  9. “So,” Ilya cleared his throat, the word sounding too loud in the stillness. “Shane tells me you like New Yorker.” Shane’s dad looked at him from where he was rinsing out a glass in the sink, visibly surprised that Ilya had spoken first. “Oh. Yes,” he said after a beat. “I like to read in the mornings. I love the crossword. Do you read The New Yorker too?” “No.” “Oh.” or While Shane is outside with his mother, Ilya finds unexpected understanding and warmth in a quiet kitchen conversation with the man who helped raised the boy he loves.

”Let’s dance.” And yeah. Okay. Shane wasn’t really a good dancer and didn’t really even like it. He couldn’t really hold a beat, but tonight he wanted to try it out with Ilya. Because he knew Ilya was always there to catch him, no matter what. ”Really. You wanna dance?” Ilya laughed, but took a hold of Shane’s hips as they swayed to the music ”, You say you’re terrible at it. And that you don’t enjoy it.” ”Yeah, well. This night is full of surprises.” Shane answered. Or: Shane’s first time going to a gay club after him and Ilya’s relationship comes public. Dancing and sex.

But if a sandwich can change the course of her dads' lives, maybe she should give it a try. For Shane and Ilya, the memory of that afternoon inspires old feelings and needs from the two devoted dads. AKA a slice of life fic where Shane and Ilya are happy parents who also make time for horniness after the kids go to sleep.

  12. “So, how do you feel about Chicken Parmesan?” Of all the things Ilya could have guessed David Hollander would say, that was not one of them. Maybe “Sorry for accidentally interrupting a beautiful moment with your boyfriend and then immediately leaving. That was probably stressful.” Or the opposite end, “Why do you think you're worthy of my perfect son after publicly whoring around for years?” Both scenarios were unlikely, he knew, but the chicken parmesan really came out of nowhere. Ilya cleared his throat and tried not to fidget with his crucifix. “Is good.” -------------------------------------------------------- Or, the missing convo between Ilya Rozanov and David Hollander

And he’s so, so tiny pressed against Shane’s chest, the weight of him fills him with something he can’t exactly put into words. Love. After welcoming their first child, Shane and Ilya share a quiet moment together as a family.

  16. Shane can’t think of a better way to wake up than this: The sun is casting rays from the big window, spilling all over their white bedsheets, blanketing them in luminosity and warmth. The big comforter is haphazardly thrown around them, half of it on the floor, and there is a glow, a light that he can’t even begin to explain, everywhere. If he raises his head just slightly from the warmth of Ilya’s—his husband’s—back he can see the river, and make out the blue sky. He chooses not to raise his head and instead bury the growing smile on his face to Ilya’s back. His husband. Or: their first morning as husbands spent dancing to an old Japanese song and saying vows in Russian.

  17. “Is not like we don’t know how to be quiet, we hooked up in hotels for over a decade.” “It’s not about being quiet, Ilya. No matter what we do, they’re going to assume we’re in there having sex.” “Yeah, well, we probably will be having sex.” Ilya didn’t really understand the issue. Was he supposed to pretend he and his husband were celibate? Half the guys on the team made jokes about post-game sex with their partners. No one ever batted an eye with them. “Quiet sex, though.” Shane hadn’t disagreed, but apparently it wasn’t a helpful distinction. Shane insists he and Ilya sleep in separate hotel rooms for away games. Neither of them handle it very well.

Ilya holds Amber in his arms and looks seriously into her tiny eyes. She giggles appreciatively at him. At the end of the hall, he can see Pike trying not to let his dismay show. Ilya enjoys holding the baby nearly as much as he enjoys the discomfort building on Pike’s face as he watches them. She hasn’t managed words quite yet, but they’re close. “Ro za nov,” he says, trying to get Amber to repeat it back. She is a happy baby, born to a perfect family. He hopes her whole life will be as happy and boring as this. Ilya and Shane babysit the Pike kids for New Year's.

  20. [Takes place post-TLG. Spoilers ahead.] “I have bad feeling about this.” The two men looked up at the two-story suburban Ottawa house. Strings of multicoloured lights twirled around the squat, snow-covered cedar trees in the front yard, and a little cobblestone walkway curved up from the driveway toward the porch. Shane looked over his shoulder and grinned. “You’re scared of my parents now?” Ilya raised one dubious eyebrow. “Is not just your parents inside. Also there are aunts. Uncles.” He shuddered dramatically. “You should not have told me about Great Aunt Alice.” Shane laughed. “It’s fine. Just ignore everything she says, and the rest are all gonna love you.” He leaned up on his tiptoes and kissed Ilya’s rough-stubbled cheek. “Just like I do.” “Like you do?” Ilya wiggled his eyebrows up and down, and Shane saw the start of a mischievous grin twinkling in his eyes. “This will make this party much more interesting.”
