What if instead of "Lily" and "Jane," Ilya chose names based off their last names: "Rose" and "Holly." OR Hayden believes Shane was in a three year relationship with Rose Landry.

  2. Ilya: No goals. I am not sure you deserve the treat I promised you earlier ;) Shane: I don’t remember you saying anything about scoring. Only winning. Ilya: I don’t know, Hollander. I may have to be convinced. OR After Shane’s first game in the league without Ilya, Ilya rewards him for the team’s win. The Ottawa Centaurs had won their first game of the season 2-0 against their Florida rivals. Shane should be thrilled, the rink had been packed with fans cheering on their home team and Wyatt Hayes had shut out the other team with a few highlight worthy saves. Both Zane Boodram and Troy Barrett had scored goals, leading the team to victory, but despite all of this, Shane didn’t feel the same excitement he normally felt winning. While his teammates were celebrating, he had been rushing through his after game routine in order to get out of the locker room as soon as possible. It was the first season that Shane and Ilya weren’t playing together as Ilya had decided to retire after they’d won the Stanley Cup back to back over the last two seasons. When Shane joined the Centaurs during free agency 5 years ago, the team had begun creating a dynasty with the two best forwards in the league. Shane was forever grateful that he’d gotten to play with Ilya during those five seasons, but he wished they had more time together. Shane had been convinced that they would retire together, but Ilya was done with hockey and Shane knew that he had at least a few years left with the sport he loved. Despite Shane’s mixed emotions, he knew that Ilya was excited to focus on other things like the Irina Foundation, spending the day with their dog Anya, and finally being a hockey WAG. Ilya had spent the day stressing about his first impression as a WAG even though he’d already known a majority of the women who made up the group. Shane had managed to distract him before the game started and when Ilya had left the house to meet the WAGs before the game, he’d been thrilled to catch up on all of the gossip. Shane may have missed seeing Ilya on the ice, but he was excited to have someone waiting for him outside the locker room. He dug his phone out of his bag and powered it on, he disliked the distractions that came with it buzzing away from notifications during his pregame rituals or when he was trying to stay focused in between periods. As soon as the screen turned on, he navigated to his texts, sending a quick thank you to his parents and Hayden who’d sent him congratulations on the win. When he opened his thread with Ilya, he saw multiple messages waiting for him: Ilya: I cannot believe you missed that shot. Ilya: Congrats on the assist. It is still not a goal though. Ilya: Wow that save by Hayes was impressive. Ilya: I have started a bet with Harris about who will score a goal first. You or Troy? Ilya: You owe me $100 bucks. I cannot believe Troy scored before you. Ilya: No goals. I am not sure you deserve the treat I promised you earlier ;) Ilya: I am proud of you. Shane’s heart warmed at the teasing, happy that Ilya had taken the time to text him during the game even though he knew that Shane kept his phone off. He racked his brain, running through the various ways he could respond to the messages, before replying. Shane: I don’t remember you saying anything about scoring. Only winning. Ilya: I don’t know, Hollander. I may have to be convinced. Shane smiled and set his phone down to finish getting dressed. Once he was done, he turned towards his teammates and congratulated them on the win. A few of the younger guys were going to celebrate at a nearby club and attempted to invite Shane, but he passed on the invitation. He wasn’t a fan of the chaos that came with the scene and he had better things to do with his night. He exited the locker room, finding Ilya and Harris leaning against the wall and laughing. Shane was glad that Ilya didn’t have to be the only husband in the WAG group and that the Centaurs as a whole were extremely supportive of their relationship. It had been rough when they were outed to the league and Montreal had turned their back on Shane. Thankfully, he’d been accepted with open arms by the team he’d grown up rooting for. Ilya’s eyes lit up when he spotted Shane, waving him over. He walked up to the men and Ilya gave him a kiss. “You will never guess what Harris was just telling me,” Ilya said excitedly. “His parents found another dog at the orchard. It is a sign.” Shane looked at the two men suspiciously. He wasn’t going to say no to an abandoned dog and Ilya knew that, but part of him wondered if it was all a ploy for Ilya to bring home a dog from the shelter that he’d fallen in love with. It all felt too coincidental for a dog to appear at the orchard the same day Ilya suggested getting Anya a companion. “That’s awful. People who abandon dogs like that are evil,” Shane agreed. “Do you have any leads on who did it?” “My family set up cameras around the property because it was happening so often. They already have the license plate to the cops, but Troy and I were going to foster her until she found a home,” Harris said. “That’s great. What type of dog is she?” Shane asked. He wasn’t going to say no, especially now that Ilya was home all day, but he still wanted to see what he was getting himself into. “She’s a mixed breed. Not very big either. Here, I’ve got a picture.” Harris pulled out his phone and showed Shane a picture of a small dog curled up next to his dog Chiron. “Oh she’s tiny,” Shane cooed. He was already half in love with the dog himself now just from seeing the photos. Ilya looked thrilled as he took in Shane’s reaction. He probably could already tell that Shane was going to say yes. “I guess we could take her off of your hands,” Shane said, trying to come off as nonchalant. “Ilya has been wanting another dog anyways, and she seems like the perfect edition.” “I knew you weren’t going to be able to resist her cute face,” Ilya cheered. “I cannot wait to pick her up and spoil her rotten.”

  3. He hadn’t meant to look. Honest. He really hadn’t. But Shane was in the shower, and Hayden had picked up what he’d thought was HIS phone. In his defence, the phone in question had been tossed onto the bed closest to the window, which they both knew was always his bed. Both of their phones were the same model, and neither of them had bothered to change the ringtones from the default notification. He’d picked it up without a second thought and, well, had immediately realized his mistake. But it was too late. Hayden had seen the text chain. OR Hayden starts to put the pieces together and figures things out much sooner than expected. He’d met Shane in 2008. It was the International Prospect Cup, and they’d hit it off almost instantly. Hayden had seen his raw talent and knew, even then, that he’d go far. He’d joked around with a very shy eighteen-year-old Hollander, calling him the new Crosby, who had himself once been dubbed the new Gretzky. It was a sort of passing of the generational torch, if you will. And anyone who’d ever watched Shane Hollander play hockey had to admit there was no denying he was their generation's Great One. Of course, some contested that, predicting Russia’s Ilya Rozanov as the next Great One of hockey. But Hayden knew, like the rest of the world should, that the greatest players were always Canadians. It was their sport after all; no stupid, arrogant, pain-in-the-ass Russian asshole was going to take that title. He had been ecstatic to learn they’d been drafted to the same team. Growing up in rural Ontario, Hayden had always had a soft spot for Toronto, but ultimately didn’t care where he got drafted as long as he got drafted. So, learning that a Canadian team had chosen him was an incredible moment. But learning he’d be teammates with none other than Shane Hollander had been surreal. They’d become fast friends. In the beginning, Shane had been fun, and he’d enjoyed going out with the team after games or particularly gruelling practices. Though he rarely drank, he’d still show up and have a good time. It had been on one of those nights out that Hayden had met Jackie. He’d been sipping a beer with Shane, watching Drapeau make a fool of himself on the dancefloor, when two gorgeous girls slid into their booth. A peppy little redhead had plopped herself next to Shane, while her stunning brunette friend dropped in next to Hayden. He’d bought a round for the table, then took his shot with the girl smiling up at him. Shane had been a killer wingman, politely chatting with the other girl as Hayden and Jackie drank their asses off and tore up the dance floor. An exhilarating few months later, they were Mr. and Mrs. Pike, and Hayden could hardly believe his luck. Shane had stood up with him, of course, supporting the relationship everyone else told him he’d rushed into. But Shane could see their connection; he could see how happy Hayden was and how amazing Jackie was and how perfect their life together would be. He understood and supported Hayden. “I just want you to be happy, man,” Shane had said, “if Jackie makes you happy, then fuck what anyone else says. Be happy.” And Hayden was. He had the woman of his dreams and the career of a lifetime. Nothing could touch him. They’d gone from good friends to best friends after that. Shane had been there to help put his new place back together after the housewarming party got a little out of hand. Shane had been there to celebrate the birth of all of Hayden’s kids. Shane had been there to console him when he’d traded in his sweet-ass Hummer for a Dodge Caravan. And Shane had been there countless other times. Hayden had tried to be a good friend in return. He’d repaid the favour when, after Shane bought his first place, some of the guys from the team had shown up to the housewarming with a keg. It had gotten a bit rowdy despite Shane’s best efforts, and Hayden had stuck around till morning to help him clean up the mess. Unsurprisingly, that had been the last time anyone from the team had been invited to Shane’s condo, aside from J.J. and himself. It was why he had jumped at the opportunity to be invited to Shane’s cottage the summer it was completed. He’d packed up the minivan with Jackie and their kids, then driven out to spend Canada Day long weekend at Shane’s ridiculously fancy, custom-built, lakeside cottage. Suffice to say, Hayden and Shane were best friends. Ride or die. A True bromance. Which was why he noticed when things were … off with Shane long before anyone else. It had started with a simple text message. LILY > Come over He hadn’t meant to look. LILY > Come over > will be worthwhile > 2886 Beacon > Text me. I will let you in There was a moment of silence that stretched for several minutes before another series of pings, and Hayden couldn’t help but look down at the phone he’d still been holding. LILY > You are coming, yes? > Do not make me beg > SHAAAAAAAAAANE He’d snorted at the girl’s desperation, but immediately felt bad for looking. Shane was notoriously private and probably would have been pissed if he knew Hayden had seen. Plus, at 10¢ a message, she must really like Shane. Or at the very least, really want Shane. Damn, Hayden was impressed.

  8. “I was thinking,” Hayden says slowly, carefully, “that it might be nice to add Lily to the WAG group chat? He couldn’t come to events or anything still, and he’d have to go by Lily, but it might be… nice? A way for him to— to be a part of things.”

Jackie sits back in her seat, taking a sip of coffee as she considers her husband’s proposal.

It wasn’t a terrible idea. It’d involve lying to all the other WAGs, but Jackie wasn’t too bothered by that. If Shane ever decided to come out, they would either understand or they wouldn’t—a line that would probably pretty closely mirror those who would be okay with Shane being gay and those who wouldn’t. And those who wouldn’t—well, fuck them anyway.

“That does sound like it might be nice,” Jackie finally says, smiling when Hayden immediately sits up straighter at her approving words.

    “Yeah?” Hayden checks anyways.

    “Yeah,” Jackie says.

Or, despite his refusal to let her add him to the WAG group chat, Jackie manages to quickly befriend Shane’s boyfriend. It takes longer for her to understand exactly what that means.
