Appeasing the Hockey Gods by Anonymous
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2025-12-22
Carter Vaughn believed in the Hockey Gods the way other people believed in weather forecasts. You didn’t have to like them. You didn’t have to understand them. But if you ignored them, if you scoffed or got careless, you were going to get soaked without an umbrella and then act surprised about it. Carter had been playing hockey long enough to know better. So when Scott Hunter goes on a hot streak after changing his pre-game routine he has to find out more.
Scott Hunter realizes that maybe it's ok to let his friends in a little and introduces them to Kip as his friend who makes him smoothies.

Scott must be confused as hell if he was asking for Kip. Especially in front of his teammates. Kip should say no, that he was a friend from outside New York. He lived in Vancouver or Hawaii or England. Scott was quite literally concussed, he didn’t actually want his ex-boyfriend showing up. It had been made abundantly clear that Kip and Scott’s friend groups would not be meeting each other.
“I—yeah. What hospital is he at?” Kip said.

How to Come Out as Heterosexual: A Guide for Anxious Rookies by pucksandpower
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-10
Shane and Ilya take their rookie to Kingfisher for some post-game celebration. It’s supposed to be a fun night out — just drinks, darts, and team bonding. Instead, Noah spends the entire evening having an existential crisis that culminates in him nervously showing up at their hotel room at 1 AM because he has something important to tell them. Something he’s been anxious about all night. Something that requires courage to say out loud. He’s straight. (Or the most supportive hockey husbands in the league accidentally become hockey dads to a terminally anxious rookie who thinks “coming out as straight” is a thing he needs to do.) The bus ride back to the hotel feels like a victory lap, even though they’re just crawling through Manhattan traffic at eleven PM on a Saturday night. Ilya’s sprawled across two seats near the back, his legs extending into the aisle because he’s never learned how to sit like a normal person. Shane’s next to him, scrolling through his phone with that little smile he gets when he’s reading congratulatory texts from his family. Three rows up, Noah Blanchard sits alone, staring out the window at the lit-up city like he’s never seen buildings before. “Hey,” Ilya calls out, loud enough that half the bus turns to look. “Baby Blanchard.” Noah’s ears go red — they always do — but he twists around in his seat. “Yeah?” “You come out with us tonight.” It’s not a question. Ilya doesn’t really do questions when he’s decided something. Shane looks up from his phone, eyebrows raised. “We’re going out?” “Of course we go out. We win. We are in New York. We go to Kingfisher.” Ilya says this like it’s the most obvious thing in the world, like they didn’t just play nearly twenty-three minutes each and it isn’t creeping toward midnight. “I’m not twenty-one yet,” Noah says, and his voice does that thing where it cracks a little at the end. He’s twenty, but sometimes he sounds about fifteen. “Is okay,” Ilya waves his hand dismissively. “You are with NHL team. Is fine.” “That’s not how the law works,” Shane says, but he’s already got that look on his face that means he’s going to give in. He’s always been soft when it comes to their teammates, and especially soft when it comes to Noah, who showed up to training camp in September looking like a scared puppy and hasn’t quite shaken the expression. “Scott will let him in,” Ilya insists. “He knows us. He knows Noah is good kid.” “Scott’s probably pretty pissed at us right now,” Shane points out. “We just beat them four to two.” Ilya grins, all teeth. “Exactly. So we go rub it in his face.” Shane sighs, but he’s smiling. He turns in his seat to look back at Noah properly. “You want to come? You don’t have to. No pressure.” Noah looks between them, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallows. “I mean ... yeah. Yeah, okay. If you think it’s cool.” “Is very cool,” Ilya says firmly. “You are Centaur now. You come out with Centaurs.” “Most of the team’s probably just gonna crash,” Shane says, glancing around the bus. Half the guys look like they’re already asleep, slumped against windows or each other. “But we usually hit up Kingfisher when we’re in New York. It’s ... well, you’ll see.” Noah nods, even though he looks a little uncertain. He’s got that wide-eyed expression he wears a lot, like the world is happening to him faster than he can process it. “Text your parents or whatever,” Shane adds. “Let them know you’ll be out a bit longer.” “Shane,” Ilya says, his voice dripping with amusement. “He is not baby.” “He’s our rookie,” Shane counters. “And his mom follows me on Instagram. I’m not dealing with an angry mom in my DMs.” Ilya laughs at that, loud and bright, the kind of laugh that makes other people want to laugh too. “Okay, okay. Yes, Noah, text your mama. Tell her your hockey dads are taking good care of you.” “Please don’t call yourselves that,” Noah mutters, but he’s pulling out his phone, so he’s clearly going to do it anyway. The bus pulls up to their hotel, and there’s the usual chaos of everyone gathering their stuff and stumbling out into the cold night air. Shane grabs both his and Ilya’s bags because Ilya’s already halfway to the sidewalk, turning back to yell at Noah to hurry up. “We meet in lobby in twenty minutes,” Ilya announces. “You change, we change, then we go.” “Do I need to dress nice?” Noah asks, hovering near the bus doors. Shane considers this. “It’s a bar. Just wear ... I don’t know, not your team hoodie?” “Wear something tight,” Ilya suggests with a wicked grin. “Show off that rookie body.” “Ilya,” Shane says, in that warning tone he’s perfected over the years. “What? I am just saying he should look good. We all should look good.” Ilya gestures at himself like he’s exhibit A, which, to be fair, he usually is. They scatter to their rooms — Noah’s somewhere on the fourth floor, while Shane and Ilya have a suite on the seventh because Ilya always upgrades them when they’re on the road. “Is investment in our happiness,” he always says, and Shane stopped arguing about it years ago. Shane showers quickly, because Ilya takes forever and they’re never going to make twenty minutes otherwise. When he comes out, toweling his hair dry, Ilya’s standing in front of the closet in just his briefs, scowling at his options like they’ve personally offended him. “It’s a bar, not a fashion show,” Shane says.

“You’re really here?” asked Kip.
He watched Scott swallow and glance nervously at Kip’s friends. Watched him take a breath, seeming to settle on something. He squared his shoulders as he turned back to Kip, “I’m here.”

Soulmates (or Shane and Ilya winning the Love Game) by Justaromanticfool
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2025-10-05
He knew it stung Ilya, people not understanding. It stung him too. Because to Shane, loving Ilya was like breathing and also like standing on solid ground after years of drifting. It flooded him and steadied him at the same time. It hurt, knowing the world reduced them to a rivalry, a strange story, a piece of scandalous gossip when what they had was so much more. He wanted to be by Ilya’s side for everything, the mundane, the bright and the hard. And maybe not everyone who was in love felt like this, so overwhelmed and so steadied all at once. But Shane did. And if love was a contest, well… he is the winner. Best couple. Number one. Most epic love story ever. Or 4 times Shane told people him and Ilya were practically soulmates and the 1 time the universe told him.

“So.” Shane started, he huffed a shy little laugh and found it odd, why was he being this way? “Sooo?” Ilya drawled and began to saunter over to his husband. Shane took a step back when Ilya neared him. Ilya didn’t stop, and Shane ended up pressed against the door. “How exhausted are you?” Ilya asked, and Shane noticed the tell-tale smirk. “Not at all. You?” Ilya shook his head in response, “Nope.” His hands slid up the door, caging Shane in, which made him swallow thickly. “I want to make love to you tonight, Hollander.” Shane’s entire body buzzed with anticipation and joy. “But first…do you want more cake?” Shane swooped in to kiss him, because he just needed to, or else he’d burst, “Yes. Cake. Then come ravage me.”

Ilya and Shane talking with friends after dealing with the press, then Shane helps Ilya relax. Part of a day through Ilya's POV focusing on his relationship with speaking English, and also times he doesn't need to use it, and when he doesn't need words at all “You’ve had many brilliant moments on the ice, but when people ask what the best day of your career has been, you say it was the day you got drafted. Why is that?” Maria Sellings said with a smile. She sat across from Ilya in one of the many small nooks set up in the convention hall for interviews. Whatever site or podcast she worked for was a smaller one and most players didn’t bother talking to her, but Ilya liked that she asked good questions. Sometimes reporters asked him dumb questions even if he’d answered the same question hundreds of times, or had avoided answering hundreds of time. She never did that. He liked this question in particular. “It is hard to say when things started between Shane and myself. I could give many answers, all true in one way or another. We spent some time together, the night after the draft.” Ilya remembered the way Shane had stared at him, the way he’d reacted to the slightest touch. Even though they’d barely spoken, barely touched, that night had burned in both their minds for months afterwards. “One morning he told me, he should have known from that moment, that we’d never be able to let go of each other. Later that day, I had a press conference and was still thinking of him. Someone asked about the best day I’d had in the NHL, so I said that day.” She blinked, clearly surprised by the answer, so he kept talking. “People say it was me being humble, always saying that, so grateful to be in the NHL. I love NHL, but I earned my place. It was not a gift. Though, being drafted into the same division as Shane, put on teams where we’d play so much, that perhaps was a gift.” “All this time you were talking about Shane Hollander, and the day that linked your careers together?” “I could not tell the world I loved him in words they could understand, so I said it in words they could not understand. I said it thousands of times over the years. I needed to say it.” He remembered when he’d been in Russia and spoke Russian to Shane, back before Shane knew a word of it. Shane had given him an outlet for his feelings, and he’d been doing a variation on the same thing ever since. He wanted to tell that story, but not today. He’d already wrestled a number of complicated ideas into English. “Can you tell us any other ways you’ve said it?” Ilya made a broad gesture with his hand. “It’s everywhere, in my interviews and posts. Just look and you will begin to see.” He would have explained a few of his cryptic images, but this was his last interview of the day and he was getting tired. She smiled and lobbed him a few softball questions about the upcoming All Star events. Once the interview was done, Ilya went to join Shane and some of their friends. Shane had rented a private area near the hotel’s pool just for them, Scott, Kip, Troy and Harris. Troy hadn’t been selected to play in the games, but Ilya and Shane where both entitled to bring a guest. They’d used the spots to bring their friends. They wanted Troy to get a chance to get to better get to know Scott and his partner and bring Harris further into their little circle of queer hockey player friends, so they’d arranged a little corner of the strip just for them. Scott had been surprised and grateful when they told him the plans. Kip rarely traveled to games because he’d wind up spending a lot of time bored or dodging reporters. Having a place to hide on press day and people in their little growing queer hockey community to hang out with made Kip decide to come along this time. Scott was elated to get more time with him. Ilya wished all of the queer couples they knew could all be here, but gathering at least some of them together felt good. He was glad the All-Star Games were back in Las Vegas. He loved the city. He’d love it just for the noise, the luxury, the food and people dressing sexy, but there was more to it than that. Somewhere along the strip, behind one of the tens of thousands of hotel room windows glinting in the bright afternoon sun, in a massive suite, he’d made a very special memory with Shane, one that at the time had felt so painful. How shamelessly Shane had indulged him by touching himself, going along with Ilya’s commands, that night still made his blood run hot, even though longing for more had torn at his heart. They were finally living together and out, but that was still new to them, just a handful of months after over a decade of keeping secrets. The massive, overwhelming stress that ruled their lives was gone, but Shane often joked that his nerves still hadn’t gotten the memo. Years in the closet had left marks of both of them, different marks, but marks all the same. Sometimes, it felt like it was just yesterday that they were hiding and Ilya was struggling with a painful loneliness he didn’t know how to talk about. He needed to go find his husband and breathe him in. He needed to kiss him in front of people. He swung by their room to change into swim trunks and took the stairs down, not wanting to wait on an elevator. He walked past the massive pool surrounded by lounge chairs and curtained daybeds. The area Shane had rented was called a cabana and seemed to be a cross between a tent and a patio. Drapes of white fabric and tall plants gave them a measure of privacy while still having easy access to everything. Through the entrance, he could see Shane laying back in what looked like a giant wicker bowl filled with cushions. He ignored the others for the moment and launched himself at his husband, half landing on him. Even though it was winter, it was still Vegas so Shane’s skin had a slight sheen of sweat and smelled good, like he’d just started a work out. Salt, seaweed and the comforting scent of Shane that was so deeply imprinted into his brain flooded his mind. He took a deep breath to center himself. Shane was solid and warm and leaning into him, like he knew what Ilya needed. Once Ilya relaxed, they grabbed and pushed at each other until Shane was tucked under his arm. They were half snuggled close and half sprawled out to not overheat, legs falling however was comfortable, bottles of beer and various appetizers in easy reach. Harris’ laughter almost covered up Scott’s good natured complaining about Ilya’s antics.

“Nervous? But you’ve done hockey camps like this before haven’t you?” “It’s not the hockey camp, I’m excited for that. I’m nervous about the whole staying at Shane and Rozanov’s house thing.” “Why?” his husband asks turning his head briefly to look at Scott with a furrowed brow. “Because I don’t know either of them that well even though we went to their wedding. Them being together at all is still a little weird to me. It’s like they’re letting me into their super-secret love nest or something.” Or the one where Scott stays at Shane & Ilya's while coaching the Ottawa hockey camp.

“Did you see this?” Ilya passed his phone to Shane, who frowned in confusion. “You are the leading theory.”
“The leading theory for what?” he still frowned, trying to read the excerpt of Adrian's book as fast as possible. Ilya could tell the moment that he got excited, an inability to resist such juicy gossip. “Wait, Adrian Dela Cruz dated someone in the NHL?”
