  1. “I did something stupid,” Shane confesses, inhaling rapidly. He's still crying, still frozen in the doorway, besides his hitching chest and watering eyes. Hayden's never seen him like this, overtaken with emotion, bitter exhaustion in his voice. He makes a soft choked noise, and Hayden immediately wants to kill something, whatever it is that's making him feel so awful. “I—Hayds—you're gonna hate me—”

“No,” Hayden says before he can even finish the thought, almost hurt by the accusation. “No way. You're—I wouldn't. I won't.”

Shane sniffs, offering him a sad smile, his eyes watery and solemn. It's an unfamiliar look, burnt through with sorrow and twisting doubt, sharp worry in the furrow of his brow. “You are,” he says, soft and certain. “I do, and I'm the one who's doing it.”

OR: Shane returns to the hotel room, post-tuna melt. Hayden spirals.

When he presses the button on the doorbell, he hears the digitally-produced ding-dong echo from inside. There is a tiny box halfway up the adjacent wall that immediately beeps and emits Shane’s voice. “Hey, you can just leave it on the step, thanks.” Ilya presses his nose into the digital doorbell, which he knows to also contain a camera, and says, “Shane.” A pause. “What the fuck.” A brief cacophony of noise that Ilya can hear even from outside the house. The multiple successive thumps of something falling, Shane swearing loudly and the sound of what can only be a hockey game being paused on the television. He opens the door to reveal that he is nap-rumpled, wearing two pairs of socks and carrying a child in his arms. The only really surprising part is that the socks don’t match, though the child is interesting. Ilya takes an impromptu trip to Montreal. There are unforeseen consequences.

  4. Shane discovers that surviving four kids is harder than any playoff game and that Ilya is unfairly good at it. Hayden, meanwhile, comes home to a peaceful house, sleeping children, and the unsettling realization that his long-time on-ice rival has somehow charmed his entire family. Ilya has won a Stanley Cup, League MVP, has stared down a full arena booing him, survived a thousand chirps, and has survived Shane’s endless complains about his occasional smoking habit. None of that prepared him for bedtime at the Pike house. Why did he agree to this again? Oh right he loves Shane. Shane, admittedly didn’t look as confident in the situation either and was filled with additional dread when he felt his phone buzz in his pocket. HAYDEN: Running late. Pls don’t let them eat anything that comes in a spray can. SHANE: ??? HAYDEN: Arthur found whipped cream once. Jackie says it was a dark time. Shane stares at the message until his brain stops buffering. Then he looks up and sees the four Pike children arranged across the living room like a staged photo shoot for “Parenthood: A Horror Story.” Ruby was is sitting cross-legged on the rug with a book open, reading with the calm confidence of someone who has already accepted that adults are unreliable. Jade is standing on an ottoman, wearing what appears to be a plastic tiara and a superhero cape at the same time at least he hopes that’s Jade, otherwise the twins had a personality swap. Amber is on the couch upside down, hair hanging toward the floor like a bat. Arthur is… not visible. Shane’s blood turns cold. “Where’s Arthur?” A small giggle comes from behind the curtains. Shane lunges and yanks them aside. Arthur is crouched there like a tiny gremlin, clutching Ilya’s phone, proudly smearing his fingerprints across the screen. “Buddy,” Shane says in a voice that is too calm, “why are you in the curtains?” Arthur grins and holds up the phone as if he’s accomplished something incredible. “Mine.” “No,” Shane says. “Absolutely not” A shadow falls over Shane’s shoulder. Ilya leans in, towering, relaxed, and infuriatingly amused. “He is practicing stealth,” he says, like Arthur is training for special ops and not currently attempting to drool on his smartphone. “He’s practicing identity theft,” Shane hisses, snatching the phone away trying to give it back. Arthur’s face collapses. His lip trembles. Shane freezes. “Oh no.” Arthur’s inhale is deep, dramatic, and unmistakably pre-scream. “Ilya,” Shane says, warningly, “do something.” Ilya looks down at Arthur with the solemn seriousness of a man defusing a bomb. Then he lowers himself into a crouch and says softly, “Arthur. You are brave soldier. But now you must surrender.” Arthur sniffles. Ilya puts a hand over his own chest. “I am also sad when phone is taken. Shane is just trying to help be but is misguided. We make treaty instead.” Arthur’s eyes widen, suspicious and hopeful. Ilya opens his other hand and reveals, somehow, a small, shiny sticker. A hockey sticker. It’s a Centaur wearing skates. Arthur stops crying mid-breath like someone hit pause. Shane stares. “Where did you get that.” Ilya shrugs. “I always have stickers.” “You just…carry stickers.” “For children,” Ilya says, like Shane is the dumbest person alive. “Also for Shane when he is being difficult.” “I am not a child.” Ilya leans closer, murmurs so only Shane can hear: “Debatable.” Arthur snatches the sticker with reverence and slaps it directly onto his own forehead. Ruby doesn’t even look up from her book. “Dad says not to put stickers on your face.” Arthur beams. “Face!” Amber pops upright from the couch like a sprung trap. “Can I have one?” Jade bounces. “Me too! Me too! I want sparkly!” Shane points at Ilya. “Why would you do this.” Ilya smiles, pleased. “They asked nicely.” They have not, Shane thinks. They have asked like a mob. How does Hayden manage so many of them? But then because the universe hates him, Amber climbs right over Shane and clings to Ilya’s arm like a koala. “Ilya,” she says, earnest and bold, “Uncle Shane says ‘no’ a lot.” Shane sputters. “I do not—”

Shane grinned. “You are experiencing baby fever!” Ilya cocked his head to the side, and looked at his husband confused. Shane let out a snort. Just a little one. Ilya raised his eyebrows, and Shane began to laugh. “Baby fever? What is this? I have no fever,” Ilya pouted. He couldn’t understand why Shane was giggling like a teenager. “Oh,” Shane kept laughing, almost not being able to get the words out. “Shaneee,” Ilya whined ----- After watching Amber Pike, Ilya gets hit with the worst baby fever of his life. Now he just has to convince his husband to get him one.

prompt: sugar crash “So there’s dinner on the stove, in case you two are hungry — yes, even your shitty birdseed, Shane — and extras for the kids but they’ve all eaten.” Hayden was grabbing stuff and shoving it away as he spoke, clearing up the lounge so that it was somewhat presentable. “Most of their toys are in the den, but they can have two each in the lounge — two — at any one time. Don’t let them tell you otherwise. Bedtime is at seven, they will try to stay up later. There will be many tricks, don’t fall for a single one of them. “Arthur’s potty just got emptied — he took a massive—” “Dump,” Shane cut in as he bounced Amber in his arms. Jackie was still near enough, he thought, to hear him. Amber couldn’t talk but she could babble. Hayden already had three dollars in that jar in the past five minutes. “—shit just before dinner,” Hayden continued, ignoring Shane’s correction. Fourth dollar in the jar.

  11. “Where is my baby?” Ilya asks as soon as he opens the door to the Pikes’ SUV when it pulls into the parking lot of Christ Church Cathedral.

“Lovely to see you too, Rozanov,” Hayden says as he opens his car door.

“Hi, Hayden,” Shane says from behind Ilya. “Lovely to see you. Please ignore my husband.”

Ilya can’t even be bothered to snark back at either of them, because today is his big day.

Well, mostly. It’s sort of Amber’s day, too, he guesses, and kind of Shane’s as well if one were to look at it from a very specific angle, but mostly it’s Ilya’s.

And as Amber gives him a cheesy grin when she sees him (a new development as of the last couple of weeks), Ilya knows even his boring husband and his boring husband’s loser best friend can’t ruin this perfect day.

Because today, Ilya’s becoming a godfather.

  14. They were always competing, in a league of their own, but always together. Every conversation they'd had about their future involved their careers ending the way they'd started. Together. Ilya had been with the Ottawa Centaurs for over eight years. He had turned a dying franchise into a team to be reckoned with. The addition of his husband only further cemented Ottawa's place in the league. But as the crowds grew bigger, and the team's points got higher, Ilya felt the flame within him dwindle. -- OR -- Ilya retires, featuring his final game and jersey #81 retirement ceremony.

  18. Ilya and Shane join the Pike family for ice skating. “Have we ever done this before? Skated like. Not for hockey?” Ilya laughed. “Guess not.” “It’s kinda nice.” “Yeah,” Ilya said. God, Shane loved that smile. It was a beautiful day. The air was crisp, the sky a bright blue above Ottawa’s nicest outdoor rink—well, nicest with all-ages family skate hours, and mozzarella sticks and hot chocolate in the adjoining shopping center. The crowds skewed just young-family enough that they didn’t usually get recognized and mobbed, maybe a fan or two but not enough to spoil a day. Shane squinted against the glare of the sun, vaguely missing the controlled familiarity of a rink. It was almost too bright against the outdoor ice. “Sweetie—sweetie, please go to Uncle Shane, Daddy’s got his hands full with your sisters.” came Hayden’s voice, a note of panic in it. Jade was half-dragging Hayd behind her, while Ruby clung to him like she was still unsure she liked skating at all. Shane turned just in time for the littlest Pike, Amber, to careen into his shins. “Oof,” he said easily, smiling as he took her mittened hand. “I don’t want to fall again,” Amber said, looking at Shane with bright eyes, and Shane’s heart just about melted. He kept losing track of how old Hayden’s kids were, but whatever age this was it was one of the cutest. “I’m not going to let you fall,” he said. “Wanna do one loop with me?” Amber sniffed, shuffling her skates. Shane was starting to feel useless. “Amber, Amber!” Arthur Pike’s little voice piped up behind them, approaching fast. Shane turned and his heart went hot in his chest. Ilya was hand in hand with Arthur, who was small for a seven (eight?) year old. Both of them had bright pink cheeks, knit scarves flowing behind them as they zoomed up and slid to an easy, excited halt. “That was so much fun! Can we go around again? No, wait—Amber, do you want a turn with Uncle Ilya?” Amber slid closer to Shane, shaking her head shyly. If it were anyone else, Shane suspected, Ilya would’ve drawn back in mock affront. But Ilya was so damn good with kids—better than any of them, in Shane’s opinion. “No, that was Arthur loop. Amber loop is different,” Ilya said, swinging Arthur around to come up next to Shane and Amber. “What’s an Amber loop like?” Amber asked. Ilya smiled at her, and Shane felt hot right down to his toes. “Can I show you? We stop if you don’t like, of course.” “Okay,” Amber said, smiling back. “Okay! Great.” Ilya turned his eyes to Shane. Even now, Shane felt himself blushing. Ilya’s smile deepened. God, he might be blushing too. “I take your other hand. Yeah? Good! Okay, here we go.” The four of them made a little chain. Shane, Amber, Ilya, Arthur. Arthur could kick and scurry all he wanted, while Ilya kept a hold of him and a steady pace for Amber, and Shane took the spot closest to center ice to anchor them. It was…easy. It was fun. It felt so natural, it was insane. When was the last time Shane had experienced something new on the ice? It was literally new! A different attention paid to his body and his mind, and it was out here on a version of the ice he loved so much, miles away from games or pressure or the public eye. The love of his life linked to him by their friends’ kids. The kids screamed in delight, kicking their feet because they knew Shane and Ilya had them. Somewhere distantly, there was music. Ilya was laughing, doing one of the silly voices that all the Pike kids liked best. Shane caught his eye. They shared a smile. It was private because it was theirs and no one else’s, but it was also out in the open, hidden from no one. His love. His love. Something simple and obvious and miraculous all at once. Ilya’s hair’s a mess. His whole face is rosy, his handsome frame ridiculously dreamy in his tailored winter jacket on the ice. Shane loved seeing him like this, getting to appreciate Ilya’s body doing what it did best (well, second-best), wearing his too-fucking-sexy wardrobe instead of their usual gear. He was hot in his gear too, obviously. But this was a rarer treat. “I love you so much,” Shane called to him as they skated in their little line. “I love you too,” Ilya called back. And then, quieter but not quiet enough, he said something in Russian that made Shane hiss Ilya! Thankfully, Jackie was back from the bathroom and loping toward them on the ice. “Thank you for skating with me, Uncle Shane and Uncle Ilya! I had so much fun!” Amber said through giggles. Ilya bowed low on the ice. “Any time,” he grinned. Arthur called his thanks back too, already tugging his mom and sister to the rest of the family. And then it was just Shane and Ilya on the ice.

As Hayden stood up, Rozanov did too. “I will help him,” he said. “You relax, enjoy not going outside in the dark.” Jackie sat back down with a smile. “Thank you, Ilya.” As Hayden and Rozanov went outside, he couldn't help himself. “What, are you afraid of the dark?” Rozanov made a sound similar to a scoff, leading Hayden to the car. “Try harder next time, Pike.” He dismissed the jab, but he didn't come up with one of his usual quick comebacks so Hayden counted it as a win for himself. -- a year following the long game, the pike family heads to shane and ilya's cottage in ottawa to spend a week with them. hayden is forced into totally mundane situations with the man he can't stand, rozanov. during his time at the cottage, he begins to understand his best friend's husband
