    Rozanov cocked his head. “You speak Russian? Or just the curse words?”

    “Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.

    “No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”

    “Go fuck yourself.”

    Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.

He’s swiping at non-existent crumbs on the counter, avoiding his eyes. “You have dinner at parents on Christmas, yes?” “Yeah.” Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.” Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?” Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?” Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?” Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.” “Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.” Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.

Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-” Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes. “Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.” “Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away. “Is okay. Slow words. Okay?” This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends. It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

It’s taking a lot for Shane to ignore the fact that he’s pretty sure he’s mad that Ilya isn’t kissing him anymore. “I- I’m sorry…” Despite English being Ilya’s second language, Shane isn’t sure he’s ever actually heard him stumble over his words. He looks… scared? Another thing Shane isn’t used to. “No. Don’t apologize. Just… do it again.” -or- Shane and Ilya are the same college team. They are also (healthily competitive) best friends.     Shane has been watching Ilya kiss strangers for years. Sometimes it’s because someone is either brave—or foolish—enough to try and prove the fabled curse of the matchmaker wrong. Sometimes it’s because no one can help themselves, because it seems like such a harmless thing to do; stealing a kiss like it will give them some sort of guaranteed assurance in the universe. It makes Shane’s stomach curl every single time. He can see the way Ilya stiffens, how he swallows too late, too polite or too jaded to ask them to stop. The world doesn’t see how he hates it, because the world never sees. They see a legend, they see a myth and nothing more; not the person who has to put up with it. Shane does. He sees Ilya’s mouth, of course. Not because he’s greedy, because he’s in it for a stroke of luck or faith or whatever delusion people want to buy into. Shane wants to taste those lips because they’re Ilya’s, because he knows... or Ilya suffers from a curse where whoever kisses him falls in love with their true soulmate (it's never him)...Shane wants to kiss Ilya bcuz he's already fallen in love with him
