  1. He knows that they voted him into the alternate captain position, but the feelings of inadequacy and being an outsider do more than just linger. He can’t stop thinking about it. Can’t stop thinking about the fact that he wouldn’t feel this way had the country that brought him up not turned its back on him. “I mean,” starts the interviewer curtly, “there are a lot of Canadians who feel uneasy about a foreigner even being on the team, let alone being a captain. I guess what I’m really trying to ask is: why make the switch at all? Just to get around the ban?” OR: Ilya and Shane go to the Olympics together and feelings are complicated

During the 'easier' episodes Ilya can manage. Usually he can gather enough strength to get out of bed, even if it's just to slouch around the cottage or outside. He'll eat whatever Shane puts in front of him. He'll put on a brave face when Yuna and Dave come over to visit. And then when the evening rolls around he's so exhausted he falls asleep around eight. The 'heavy' episodes are harder. Ilya will spend most of the day sleeping. He will eat small bites of whatever Shane gives him, sometimes nothing at all. Showering is out of the question. If it's a particular bad episode, he won't even leave the bed. Shane is scared to leave Ilya alone during the 'heavy' episodes. He knows Ilya wouldn't hurt himself on purpose. But he also knows that depression is very complex and sneaks up on their victims when they're most vulnerable. Or, Ilya experiences a bad depression episode. Shane is there to catch him when he falls.

  3. They’d considered it—Shane being gay. It’d been an option. But Ilya Rozanov and the way Shane looks at him like he’s the love of his life has blindsided them. Blindsided both of them, and there’s almost nothing Yuna likes less than being blindsided.

She’s not mad, David wants to say. We’re so proud of you. We’re so happy for you. We just didn’t know.

Somehow we missed it, you falling in love.

He's looked at pictures almost every day, crying at night while staring at gorgeous blue-green eyes, cherry red full lips and high cheekbones. 7. “So,” Ilya cleared his throat, the word sounding too loud in the stillness. “Shane tells me you like New Yorker.” Shane’s dad looked at him from where he was rinsing out a glass in the sink, visibly surprised that Ilya had spoken first. “Oh. Yes,” he said after a beat. “I like to read in the mornings. I love the crossword. Do you read The New Yorker too?” “No.” “Oh.” or While Shane is outside with his mother, Ilya finds unexpected understanding and warmth in a quiet kitchen conversation with the man who helped raised the boy he loves.

  8. Shane sat up, heart beginning to thud—not with fear, but with momentum. His brain latched on, suddenly efficient, suddenly sharp. Trades happened. Players moved. People made choices all the time that weren’t about winning cups but about living. And Ilya—God, Ilya deserved more than survival disguised as compromise.

  9. “Ah,” Ilya said, grinning, going for the joke. Shane looked up, curious. “So being boring is genetic?” He expected laughter. Or the way Shane would roll his eyes even as he melted, the way that made the teasing feel welcome. Instead, Shane’s smile disappeared completely. It wasn’t dramatic. It just… went. Like a light switched off. “Yeah,” Shane said, clearing his throat, forcing the word out before it could crack. “I guess so.” He took a step back, creating space that felt suddenly necessary, like he might suffocate if he drifted any closer. Every instinct in him screamed to leave. To put distance between himself and this feeling and the source of it before it swallowed him whole

Shane and Ilya are back at the cottage this summer. At Shane's parents house, there happen to be some of Shane's cousins who made fun of him for his autism. Back at the cottage, while cuddling, Shane started venting. That small vent started a whole conversation that definitely made them... closer.

[excerpt] “Shane?” He swiveled his head toward the voice, unsure of what they wanted—what they expected of him. “Huh?” “Are you in a relationship with Ilya Rozanov?” Shane wasn’t sure how to answer or react. There wasn’t a single coherent thought in his head at the moment. He couldn’t breathe or even swallow. All he could do was stand there.

  13. r/russianlanguage u/genuine_metal_45 Cahteeohnik??? I’m kind of in a situationship with this Russian guy. He sometimes struggles a bit with expressing himself in English. I’ve been trying to learn some Russian, but it’s going to take a long time before I can have much of a conversation with him in his language. Right now, I’m such a beginner at Russian that I can’t even manage the spelling to try to look up any of the things he says. He calls me something that sounds like cahteeohnik, but I can’t figure out the correct transliteration to look it up. And trying to spell it in cyrillic is hopeless. Any help would be appreciated! In the early days of Shane and Ilya hooking up, what if Ilya was a little more free with endearments, but only in Russian? And what if Shane went online for some help understanding what Ilya is saying and somehow connected to Svetlana? This is Svetlana’s POV of how that plays out.

Shane finds Ilya outside the cottage in the middle of the night. Ilya wants to stop being scared of the loons. Shane just wants Ilya. Shane reached across the bed, grumbling when he hit the mattress instead of Ilya’s ass. He blinked sleepily at his watch - 3:24 am - and then at the en suite. Empty. Where is he? Ilya was probably getting water or something. He needed to relax. Shane closed his eyes and counted to 50. Five more rounds of counting and Shane was out of bed, throwing on the Raiders hoodie Ilya tore off hours before. So much for relaxed. “Ilya?” He called out tentatively. The cottage was silent. Shane was on his way to search upstairs when he saw him. Ilya, on the dock, his back to the cottage. Two breaths later and Shane was outside, bracing against the cool wind. “What are you doing?” Even in the dark, without his glasses, Ilya was like a beacon of warmth built just for Shane. Moonlight reflected off his hair, his shoulders. He was stunning. In fuzzy silhouette, Ilya was still aching clarity. “I’m waiting,” Ilya answered, unmoving, eyes still out on the water. When he didn’t elaborate, Shane fought the quip sitting in his throat. It was always so easy to joke and tease, but Shane wanted the earnest Ilya more than anything. It didn’t stop him, though, from feeling like he was flailing for new ground. He hesitated. Despite knowing each other for years, everything was distressingly new. Shane didn’t know the new rules of engagement, and it terrified him that he might do something wrong. Shane resisted the unknown like it was a cross-ice puck pass through traffic. In a tied playoff game. But this was Ilya, and Shane couldn't fight the itch of his feet begging to walk towards him if he tried. And God knows he’d fucking tried. Shane grabbed a blanket from the deck and walked down the short trail to the dock. Ilya finally turned to look at him, smiling softly as he helped Shane wrap the quilt around them both. Their shoulders brushed against each other, and it felt like being held and struck by lightning all at once. Whatever anxiousness had crept into Shane's chest vanished. Fuck, I’m a goner. How did I ever think I was straight? “Sorry if I woke you.” Shane shook his head. “It’s okay. I mean, you didn’t. Are…are you okay?” A loon called in the distance, and Ilya jumped practically ten feet in the air. “Shit.” He sighed. “Fucking loon. So fucking loud. And ugly. Fucking ugly evil duck.” “You saw one?” “I googled it.” Tension radiated from Ilya, and Shane didn’t know what to make of it. Ilya was so rarely still. He was always moving, fidgeting with something. But right now, Ilya wasn’t just still, he was… frozen. Ilya even seemed to breathe in a way that moved his body as little as possible. It was unnerving. Another loon called, and Ilya sucked in a breath. He let it back out slowly. “Was better,” he whispered. Something desperate twisted in Shane’s stomach. “Ilya.” “Cottage is nice. Being at the cottage with you is nice.” Shane nodded slowly. Did Ilya regret coming? Did he want to leave? Ilya snaked an arm around Shane’s waist and pulled him in, dropping a kiss on his shoulder. His lips were so cold, but Shane didn’t mind. He’s always felt at home on the ice. “I want to come back. Some time. If you want me to.” “I want you to.” “Loons make nests in summer. On lakes.” He shrugged. “Not sure how you make nest on a lake.” “You looked that up?” “Yes.” “Why?” “We will be here together, in the summers, yes?” “Probably.” “The evil wolf ducks will be here, too.” As if they were listening, a particularly close loon chirped on their left. Shane thought it was still easily 10 meters or more away, but Ilya pulled back like he was under attack. It was startling to see Ilya so scared. Shane hated it. Ilya rolled his shoulders and breathed deeply, like he was trying to calm himself. Suddenly, realization dawned on Shane so hard he nearly doubled over. Ilya wasn’t pulling away. Ilya was here, at Shane’s cottage, leaning into Shane’s side and rubbing a thumb along his hip. Ilya was letting him see that something was wrong, and Shane knew the kind of gift this trust was. Fuck him if he took it for granted. “Sit down.” “What?”

  16. Shane can’t think of a better way to wake up than this: The sun is casting rays from the big window, spilling all over their white bedsheets, blanketing them in luminosity and warmth. The big comforter is haphazardly thrown around them, half of it on the floor, and there is a glow, a light that he can’t even begin to explain, everywhere. If he raises his head just slightly from the warmth of Ilya’s—his husband’s—back he can see the river, and make out the blue sky. He chooses not to raise his head and instead bury the growing smile on his face to Ilya’s back. His husband. Or: their first morning as husbands spent dancing to an old Japanese song and saying vows in Russian.

  17. Troy Barrett comes to Ottawa wanting stability. He tells himself he wants the team, the routine, the structure, the safety of fitting in without needing too much from anyone. This is his clean start, and he needs to do whatever it takes to keep it.

What he finds instead is Shane Hollander, amazing perfect Shane Hollander, and the uncomfortable realisation that the thing he’s been trying hardest not to want might be the only thing that actually feels like what he needs.

As lines blur and tempers rise, Troy learns the hard way that wanting to belong can turn into wanting to keep, and that some things aren’t up for negotiation, especially when there’s a Russian captain who’s already decided what’s not on offer.

    or

“Hey, Ilya?” Troy asks, already regretting it. “I was actually going to ask you about someone.”

The moment he says Shane Hollander’s name, the locker room goes quiet, and Troy knows he’s crossed a line he didn’t fully understand.

  18. Being around Ilya is good—better than nearly any other time, because he knows Shane better than anybody else. He can belong around Ilya. He belongs to Ilya, in a way, and Ilya belongs to him. Shane likes to express that belonging in unconventional ways. Most of all, he loves being on his knees for him.

  19. Maybe if the video ended there, Shane thought, it would be okay. Okayish. Still incriminating. Still a fucking disaster. Still embarrassing, to have his breakup with this beautiful actress filmed and disseminated on Reddit of all fucking places, but not a nail in his coffin, burying him alive. But the video didn’t end there.

“Can I ask if you’ve ever been with another guy?” she had to ask.

And he, tears visible in his eyes, had to nod.

Just once. Just a single nod.

Why did he have to nod?

“Have you ever told anyone that before?” He shook his head. “Was it different? With a guy?”

    “Of course.”

    Of course.

    “Was it better?”

    “Yes.”
