  1. “Fuck it,” He mutters in Russian before just pressing his thumb down onto the phone next to Hollander’s contact. Ilya puts it onto speaker, listening to just up to the first half of the second ring before pressing the big red button, not letting it go on any longer. Fuck. He drops his phone and presses the palms of both of his hands to his eyes, trying to stabilize himself. Ring. His heart practically jumps out of his chest when he hears the sound coming from his phone. He looks down at where it’s sitting on the bed, the screen reads “Jane." Fuck. Out of panic, Ilya declines the call but quickly makes his way to his messages app, finding Hollander’s contact and typing out a quick few messages back to back. Ilya: did not mean to call. Ilya: was accident Ilya: no need for call back Ilya takes a deep breath and sets his phone back down only to be met with an immediate response from Hollander. * OR, 5 times Ilya had a nightmare & called Shane + the 1 time Shane was there to comfort him in person

  3. Just a little Holiday Hollanov to take the edge off. Shane and Ilya turn a wholesome Christmas activity into a very serious competition because they are adorable. --- “What are you getting?” Ilya asked. “I bought everything we need to do this!” Shane came back with a ruler in hand before sitting down to start studying the instructions on the back of one of the gingerbread kit boxes. “Oh my god, Hollander, you are so boring.” Ilya said, the grin on his face betraying his attempt at an exasperated tone. “Is cookies and candy. For fun. We do not need to measure.” Ottawa - December “We are building gingerbread houses tonight.” Shane Hollander looked up from the couch where he was lying with their dog Anya sprawled against his chest. “What? Why?” “Because I saw children making them on TikTok,” his husband, Ilya Rozanov responded, haphazardly dumping grocery bags full of gingerbread kits, icing, and candy out onto the dining table while humming Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ under his breath. Shane sat up gently, trying not to disturb Anya, who was still snuggling into his warmth, one ear pointed in the direction of the noise coming from the dining room. “We aren’t children.” “No,” Ilya agreed gravely. “We are better.” Shane squinted. “Are you trying to compete with kids?” “I am competing with you,” Ilya corrected. Shane smirked and finally got up from the couch to head toward the mountain of supplies that now took up their entire table, Anya trotting happily behind him. This was the first year in their entire relationship that they would get the full holiday season together. The NHL always gave them a few days off around Christmas, but it was just enough to rest and recover from months of travel, muscle aches, and getting slammed into boards and ice for a living. They still had games to play but now that they were on the same team, they got to spend all of December together. Really, they got every day and every night of the year together, which still felt like a dream after so many years of only seeing each other a handful of times during the regular season. Ilya didn’t used to care much about Christmas, happy to spend a night cooking and eating a festive meal with Shane’s parents, but this year he had decided to truly get in the spirit. Apparently starting with making a giant, sticky mess on their beautiful dining table. “You know, those kids probably had adult supervision,” Shane said. “Who’s going to supervise you while I’m busy building my masterpiece?” “That is why we have Anya, world’s best dog!” Ilya said, getting on his knees to scratch her behind her ears and kissing her on the soft fur between her eyes. Shane sighed and bent down to join their cuddle fest. “I love you, but this is going to be a disaster.” “For you, maybe,” Ilya grinned. Shane stood back up and headed toward the kitchen. “What are you getting?” Ilya asked. For fun. We do not need to measure.” “I want mine to stay up!” Shane explained. “Then I can have fun adding cool details once I have a perfect foundation.” Choosing to ignore the overly amused look Ilya was burning into the top of his head, Shane got to work precisely laying out cookies and carefully securing them with thin lines of icing. Just enough to ensure stability, but not so much that the icing wouldn’t dry in time. He thought it actually looked pretty good! He wanted to start adding some candy, maybe some peppermints or blue M&M’s, or it looked like Ilya had gotten some pretty cool candy that looked like snowflakes. Gummies seemed gross to add, so he planned to avoid those. Did it matter? Do people even eat their gingerbread houses or are they just for deco- His thoughts were interrupted by Ilya loudly munching on gingerbread. “Ilya! Why are you eating the roof tiles, you need those!” Shane cried out, horrified. “I am testing structural integrity,” Ilya said, still chewing. “I think it failed the test,” Shane deadpanned, gesturing to what was left of the integral roof piece. Ilya waved him off. “I will improvise. I never had these exact cookies before; they taste a bit like ones we had growing up called pryaniki.” Shane smiled at him, momentarily setting aside his very genuine concern for Ilya’s gingerbread house. Ilya didn’t talk about Russia a lot but Shane loved any glimpse into where Ilya came from. The good and the bad. “Maybe we could try making those together this week.” Ilya grinned back. “Yes, a new cookie activity for every day of the month.” “So… just ignoring the directions, then?” Shane asked, raising one eyebrow as Ilya took another bite of roof cookie. “I do not follow directions,” Ilya said, grabbing a handful of gumdrops and popping one into his mouth seductively. “I follow instincts.” “Your instincts are made of sugar.” “Yes.” They decided they would give themselves one more hour to finish up before judgment time. Shane took a look at his final product.

  8. The resemblance hit Yuna like a punch to the gut. The same honey-colored curls, though hers were styled in a gorgeous twist at the back of her head. If Yuna could see past all of the times Ilya’s nose had been broken and re-healed, she imagined it would look something like the woman’s in front of her. And those eyes - a mix of hazel and gold with tiny flecks of green if you looked close enough. Ilya must have gotten his strong jaw from his father, because this woman’s features were narrow and sharp. Stunning.

When she smiled, it looked so like Ilya’s that Yuna could have cried.

    “Irina,” she said.

“Yuna,” Irina said, bowing her head politely.

  12. just a fic about them being cute shane and Ilya had now been married for six months and playing together for five. They loved every second of it, the games, the chirping, the shared hotel rooms that somehow always ended with one of them stealing the other’s pillow. It felt like making up for all the years they’d wasted pretending they weren’t in love. Ilya adored it. He could finally hold Shane’s hand in public, talk about him in interviews, and say things like “my husband” without flinching. But there was still that tiny voice at the back of his head whispering hide. For Shane, that voice was more like a full marching band. He was getting better, though. Slowly. He didn’t flinch when Ilya grabbed his hand anymore. He only scowled a littlewhen Ilya kissed his cheek in front of teammates. But still, the world hadn’t quite caught up with them. The media preferred to call them rivals instead of married. And the ones who did acknowledge it seemed to dissect their every move like scientists studying penguin mating rituals. Shane hated it. He’d blocked every gossip account within a ten-mile radius. He didn’t see why two hockey players being in love needed to be news. Meanwhile, Ilya lived on the side of social media where people posted fan art, heart emojis, and wrote essays about how they’d “saved hockey.” He saw the good. He wanted to give them more. Shane wanted to crawl into the nearest rink freezer and hide. Still, there were always haters, the “keep hockey straight” crowd. Shane ignored them. Ilya pretended to, but sometimes the comments still stung. They were walking hand in hand with Anya before a game, their ritual, talking about their six-month anniversary plans. Ilya was thrilled. Shane was nervous. “I have it all planned out,” Ilya announced, beaming. Shane side-eyed him. “That’s… not reassuring.” “Ah, moya lyubov, is surprise,” Ilya smirked. “That’s even less reassuring.” Before Ilya could retort, a group of young hockey bros spotted them. “Rozanov! Hollander!” Shane’s shoulders tensed immediately. The guys came over, grinning, phones ready. “Can we get a photo?” Ilya glanced at his husband, who smiled a little too tightly and nodded. Ilya squeezed his hand. “Of course.” They posed, smiled, said polite goodbyes. The fans walked away, but Shane caught the sideways look at their intertwined hands. His stomach twisted. “Come, let’s go home,” Ilya said softly, tugging his hand. He didn’t add before I commit a murder with a hockey stick. At home, Shane started packing their gear while Ilya made lunch and fed Anya. His phone buzzed. It was Harris. Harris: hey, ilya. hate to do this, but you said you wanted to know when stuff popped up. might wanna see this. Attached was a photo of them from earlier — smiling, holding hands. Cute. Except the caption read: “Guess they’re still trying to make their ‘relationship’ look normal.” Ilya stared at it for a full ten seconds before muttering something in Russian that probably shouldn’t be translated. Ilya: thank you, Harris. will hide from Shane. Ilya: why can’t they just accept us? Harris: they’re idiots. don’t let it get to you. Ilya: I don’t. it’s Shane I worry about. He sighed, shoved his phone away, and went back to making lunch. Halfway through, Shane wandered in and they got… distracted. In the way that leads to being late for warm-ups. By the time Shane’s phone alarm went off, they were both breathless and tangled on the couch. “...worth it,” Ilya panted. “Completely unprofessional,” Shane muttered, buttoning his shirt. “But yes.” As they drove to the rink, Shane scrolled through the Centaurs group chat, laughing at the chaos. He didn’t mention the photo. But something in him had snapped when he saw it. He was tired. Tired of pretending, tired of being polite, tired of hiding behind “no comment.” So when they arrived, Shane turned to Ilya, grabbed his jersey, and kissed him. Hard. Long enough that when they pulled away, another car had pulled up beside them. Bood leaned out his window, smirking. “Damn, your relationship gets questioned and suddenly you two go full rom-com in the parking lot.” Shane’s face went red. “They have to see what they’re missing out on,” he shot back, to the utter shock of both Bood and Ilya. Ilya blinked. “Who are you and what have you done with my husband?” Inside, Bood elbowed Evan. “Hollander’s snapped. Love finally broke him.” During warm-ups, Shane skated next to Ilya, watching him laugh. Why had he kept the two halves of his life separate for so long? Maybe the point wasn’t to prove love and hockey could coexist, maybe it was to just live it. Then Ilya’s hair came loose from under his helmet. Shane, without thinking, pulled off his glove and fixed it. The look Ilya gave him was somewhere between shock and heart eyes. They won 2–1. Both scored. Of course.

  15. He knew it stung Ilya, people not understanding. It stung him too. Because to Shane, loving Ilya was like breathing and also like standing on solid ground after years of drifting. It flooded him and steadied him at the same time. It hurt, knowing the world reduced them to a rivalry, a strange story, a piece of scandalous gossip when what they had was so much more. He wanted to be by Ilya’s side for everything, the mundane, the bright and the hard. And maybe not everyone who was in love felt like this, so overwhelmed and so steadied all at once. But Shane did. And if love was a contest, well… he is the winner. Best couple. Number one. Most epic love story ever. 19. “So.” Shane started, he huffed a shy little laugh and found it odd, why was he being this way? “Sooo?” Ilya drawled and began to saunter over to his husband. Shane took a step back when Ilya neared him. Ilya didn’t stop, and Shane ended up pressed against the door. “How exhausted are you?” Ilya asked, and Shane noticed the tell-tale smirk. “Not at all. You?” Ilya shook his head in response, “Nope.” His hands slid up the door, caging Shane in, which made him swallow thickly. “I want to make love to you tonight, Hollander.” Shane’s entire body buzzed with anticipation and joy. “But first…do you want more cake?” Shane swooped in to kiss him, because he just needed to, or else he’d burst, “Yes.
