  1. “Mama,” he says, bringing the cigarette to his lips. “You have been worried about me. I know.” The smoke in his throat is so familiar. When he breathes out, it's already jagged. "I wanted to tell you that you don't have to be. Not anymore." (Or: after waking early one morning at the cottage, Ilya goes down to the water to talk to his mother.)

  3. Now thirty-one, Hollander is sitting across from me on a soft leather couch, part of a home study in the Muskoka lake house he owns. (His parents’ cottage, the one from his childhood, is a ten-minute drive away.) It’s a tastefully decorated room, with big ceiling-high windows that let in plenty of summer light, and walnut shelves full of books — mostly sports-related. Hollander looks at home here, dressed in a loose pair of light-wash jeans and a plain navy t- shirt, which shows off his impressive arm muscle. Everything is just the right side of comfortably casual. When I initially booked this interview, I expected to be asked to meet in Ottawa, perhaps even New York, as Hollander has plenty of sponsorship deals that keep him busy, even in the summer months when hockey is on a break. I expected to be fitted in, that is. The current Alternate Captain for the Ottawa Centaurs has never given access like this before, and, frankly, I was unsure how much he’d be willing to share.

  4. Ilya had realized it the moment he’d opened his eyes a few days prior, too warm under the covers to be comfortable. Nothing had even happened yet, but he'd felt immediately distant from himself. Like somewhere between sleeping and waking, he’d stepped out of his body and into another.

  5. Being around Ilya is good—better than nearly any other time, because he knows Shane better than anybody else. He can belong around Ilya. He belongs to Ilya, in a way, and Ilya belongs to him. Shane likes to express that belonging in unconventional ways. Most of all, he loves being on his knees for him.

  6. Ilya didn’t listen, leaning in a little closer so their arms touched for a moment. They’d been warned by his mother about the intensity of Japanese summers, and the both of them had grown up cold weather boys, but Shane always found Ilya’s warmth otherworldly, a sensation that defied any measure of temperature. Shane and Ilya take a trip.

Shane dropped his gaze. “You’re really going to make me ask?” “Yes,” Ilya said. “You ask, maybe you get. So, ask.” “Okay,” Shane said. “I want you to fuck me.” Ilya started to laugh. “Don’t—this isn’t a fucking joke, alright?” Shane snapped. “Shut up. I want it to be different. Or, no—the same, but more. I want you to just make me fucking take it. Shit. I don’t know how to ask you for this.” “No, no, is good start so far,” Ilya said. “Go back to the part where I get to make you fucking take it. That’s good. Tell me more.”

  8. “Ilya?” Shane calls, and Ilya spins around to see Shane holding the most damning thing he could’ve found in Ilya’s suitcase—that damned Montreal Metros hoodie. “This is mine, isn’t it?” Ilya freezes. “Eh?” “How do you have this? I thought I’d lost it ages ago.” There’s no good way for Ilya to say the truth, which is that: you left it at my house in Boston after you broke my heart for the first time and I kept it so I could wear it occasionally and jerk off while thinking about you when I thought I would probably never be able to have you again and it was the last bit of you I could have, so Ilya settles for the next best thing, which is: “It… it is not yours.” Shane shoots him an unimpressed look. Ilya is really struggling with the fact that he wants to keep Shane forever and steal his clothes and leave dumb hickies on him and wake up to him in the morning. He's working on it.

  9. Do you ever feel depressed? Ilya paused again. Yes, but why would a dentist need to know that? What if this dentist told the rest of the team medical staff, and they benched him or took away his captaincy because he was depressed? He checked no. Ilya gets a dental cleaning and has to confront the fact that maybe he is not managing his depression as well as he thinks.

  10. Shane Hollander is everything the NHL wants him to be: a Golden Boy, a captain, a rivalry- ready face of the league. Ilya Rozanov is everything Shane isn’t allowed to want: sharp-tongued, unapologetic, and devastatingly magnetic. From a charged first collision to a decade of stolen nights, staged girlfriends, and a rivalry that burns hotter than hate ever could, Shane and Ilya build a love that survives only in hallways, hotel rooms, and the spaces where cameras can’t reach. But some ghosts don’t fade quietly—and some loves refuse to stay secret forever. A story about ambition, fear, glass walls, and choosing each other even when the world says it’s a disaster.

  11. Ilya knows there is a thing about himself he has to always keep hidden in the deepest recesses of his body, behind his molars and in his core. He thinks Shane Hollander might be the same, except the thing about him he cannot hide. Ilya Rozanov is the biggest hockey talent of his generation. So is Shane Hollander. But over the years Ilya notices that the vicious media and the clamouring fans and some of his more foul-mouthed teammates treat Hollander differently than any other hockey player.

  12. “Game is over,” he says. “You won. I lost. I was annoying. Normal.” “That’s not—” Shane starts, then stops, because he actually doesn't know how to finish that thought without sounding like an idiot. His jaw works, teeth grinding together. That's not what I meant. That's not the point. You said I was boring and you were right and I need you to say it again so I know where I stand, so I know what you think of me, so I can stop waiting for the other shoe to drop. He settles for: “You were kind of an asshole.”

  14. Ilya pulls back then, looks Shane in the eyes, and it takes a lot to make eyes that icy and blue feel warm, but he manages it, somehow. “I am feeling,” he says, voice gone all sly, face suddenly smug, “that we may be, what is it? Compatible, in this way—what do you think?” Shane has to remind himself to breathe, to blink; he nods, an automatic, emphatic yes.

  19. Shane’s immediate reaction is to say that he doesn't know when it started. He doesn’t know who his soulmate is. This is what he’s been telling himself for years, because if he stops for more than a second to think about how long he's been collecting little pieces of Ilya Rozanov, he thinks he'll spiral out of control. He'll hit the deck like a firecracker dropped unceremoniously onto the sidewalk, burning wildly and spiralling haphazardly, until he's fizzled out with nothing left to show for himself but smoke, ashes, and the knowledge that his soul is bound to Rozanov's. or: shane hollander spends twenty-five years not thinking about his soulmate. the drawer in his apartment filled with cigarettes, toothpaste, and awful t-shirts says elsewise.
