Shane wasn’t really certain how many there had been lying around–Yuna and David had been in charge of handling refreshments–but an open, nearly-full bottle indicated that perhaps there had been too much. “Bring it here and I’ll dump it out.” “Dump it out?” Ilya frowned, crossing the living room towards the kitchen. “And waste it?” “What would you rather do?” Ilya set the bottle on the counter and came up behind Shane, strong arms slinking around his waist, Ilya’s lips just barely brushing against his ear. “Put these on,” Ilya says, and Shane takes them from him with a skepitcal look.
“Will these even fit me? And again, what are we doing? Are we even supposed to be here? I don’t think–”
“Shane,” Ilya interrupts, taking Shane’s face into his hands and squeezing just enough to make Shane’s lips pucker out. “You are going crazy at home. You love to skate. You love hockey. So let’s go skate. And play hockey. Just you and me, okay?”
Oh.
There’s so many things he wants to say. Like how much he loves Ilya. Or how glad he is that they’d taken the plunge off that scary, crazy cliff when they were teenagers. Or how even in the midst of the craziness and anxiety and unknown, Shane is so fucking excited for the life they’re going to have.
But it all gets caught in his throat as emotion takes hold, and all he can do is nod and say, “Okay.”

Over the course of the first half of his fifth season on the Centaurs, Shane considers retirement, homophobia, his public life, family, and his legacy. He also gets a tooth knocked out, visits the beach, and is repeatedly pissed off by how hot his husband is.

“Oh shit.”
Shane looked up, turned his head to where J.J. was sat across the aisle. The blue glow of his phone lit up the too-wide whites of his eyes staring down intently at whatever was on his screen. Shane’s stomach lurched again, anticipating a sudden stop his body hadn’t quite caught up to yet.
“The Centaurs’ plane crashed in Tampa.”
There was a moment where everything was still moving, where Shane and the world were still spinning at the same speed they both always had, and then it all came crashing down. Shane wasn’t sure whether it was him that had stopped, or the world around him, but either way, in a matter of seconds the distance between himself and the bus he had only a moment ago been sitting in became staggeringly, dizzyingly vast.
The Centaur's emergency landing plays out a little bit worse, and Shane is left with the harsh reality of the cost of loving Ilya in secret.
