So when he typed out on his phone “we didn’t even kiss” with tears rolling down his cheeks, he just wanted to type it. He just wanted to feel it— to feel the pain he had inside of him. That maybe typing it would help let it out, he would type it and the feeling would go away. And the stupid fucking elevator still wasn’t here, and he was forced to sit there and wallow in his sadness. He should’ve thought this through, his hands were still shaking and as he went to delete the text. His clumsy thumb accidentally hit the send button. “Oh fuck.” That snapped Shane out of everything. Or What if Shane accidentally sent the "we didnt even kiss" text to Ilya?

"You're supposed to smoke over there." Someone said from behind Ilya. Ilya almost dropped his cigarette. His English was shitty, but he had studied that sentence enough times over the years to understand it immediately. He didn't even think about his words much anymore, but it was impossible to avoid them. He turned instinctively, and was face to face with Shane fucking Hollander. Out of almost seven billion people, of course Ilya's soulmate had to be his fated rival. It was almost poetic. Still, Ilya had enough sense to realize just how bad this was. or, Shane says Ilya's soulmate words. Ilya vows to never speak a word to him to keep him from finding out. They fall in love anyway.

“Roz! You saw Hollander out there?” Hayes asked. Stupid question. Ilya thought. Of course he saw Shane out there, it was hard to miss. Especially with the number 81 and his last name on his back. Shane didn’t tell Ilya he was doing this, he wondered if that was the point. “Yes.” Ilya responded. He tried to keep his response as short as possible, not wanting to accidentally say anything he shouldn’t. “He lost a bet?” Bood asked. or Shane wears one of Ilya’s jerseys to one of his games.

He had been thinking about it. Coming out, sharing his relationship with Ilya with the world. It scared him to no end, especially after Crowell had so blatantly voiced his disapproval. After all, with his position in the NHL, he could make Shane's life miserable. He was starting to wonder, though, if it was worth it for Ilya. Or: Two different ways Shane and Ilya get to come out on their own terms.

Shane doesn’t know exactly what led to this, but right now, Ilya’s lips are pressed to his nice and rough, and his hand is on the side of his face. He hears a soft growl coming from the back of Ilya’s throat like he’s frustrated… Wait. Ilya is kissing him. And now he’s not. It’s taking a lot for Shane to ignore the fact that he’s pretty sure he’s mad that Ilya isn’t kissing him anymore. “I- I’m sorry…” Despite English being Ilya’s second language, Shane isn’t sure he’s ever actually heard him stumble over his words. He looks… scared? Another thing Shane isn’t used to. “No. Don’t apologize. Just… do it again.” -or- Shane and Ilya are the same college team. They are also (healthily competitive) best friends. So, what happens when they're watching a movie on Shane's bed and Ilya cannot hold his feelings in anymore.

“You look like my fan.” Shane’s eyes snapped open. “It’s not too late for me to leave. You know that, right?” Rozanov pulled back and looked at him, grin wide on his face as his first finger entered Shane. “Yes. But you won’t.” Shane struggled to hold the annoyance in his face as Rozanov’s finger moved quicker. “You like this. Shane is at a sports bar in Tampa when people at his table start talking shit about Ilya. It becomes impossible to keep his mouth shut. Or, an alternative retelling of how Hayden finds out. Shane never really got the point of going out after a game, and he certainly didn’t understand going out with players from the opposing team. Still, he somehow found himself at some sports bar in Tampa, seated around a table with Hayden, J.J., and what felt like half of Tampa Thunder. It was actually just three of them, one of whom J.J. knew from junior hockey. Or something. “—and I swear we just got her to sleep through the night.” Brandon Wheeler, one of the Tampa players, rubbed a hand over his face. “And then suddenly she just started waking up again at 5 A.M.” Hayden winced. “That time’s really rough. Have you tried a white noise machine?” “Darla’s sister keeps suggesting it, so I guess we should.” Shane tried hard to keep a polite expression on his face. Sitting in a sports bar in Tampa talking about babies wasn’t really his idea of a good time. His idea of a good time was to go to the hotel and nap. Or FaceTime Ilya, but Ilya was occupied at the moment. Shane’s eyes flicked unbidden to the game on the TV. The Centaurs were playing at home against the Admirals and, by some miracle, they had yet to concede a goal. They hadn’t scored one either, but they weren’t losing. Ilya popped up in frame, mouthing off to Scott Hunter who rolled his eyes at him, and by now Shane was familiar enough with this dynamic to bite back a laugh. He watched his boyfriend on the screen, surrounded by people who had no idea. He wasn’t the only one watching the game, though, and one of the other Tampa players scoffed loudly. Andy Something-or-other. “Rozanov is such a fucking scumbag,” he spat, turning away from the game again. “I hate playing against that guy, he pisses me off.” J.J. snorted into his beer. “Is there anyone Rozanov doesn’t piss off?” Feeling his shoulders tense, Shane forced himself to reach out for his ginger ale and take a slow sip. It wasn’t the first time he’d found himself roped into similar conversations, but it was his absolute least favorite situation to be in. He hated hearing people who knew nothing about Ilya tear him to pieces. It was one thing when people said bad things about Shane, but there was something so fucked up about listening to people dig into the person he loved most in the world. “Oh, yeah, I guess you’d know better than anyone,” Brandon said, gesturing at Shane with a laugh. “That guy’s been in your face being annoying for years. Don’t know how you haven’t punched the daylights out of him.” Shane just shrugged, not finding it in him to agree with it. A few years ago, he’d have played along a little, just half-hearted insults and laughs, but he was fed up with all of it. “Shane’s a saint,” Hayden said, clapping him on the shoulder. “He wouldn’t punch the worst person you could think of, probably.” Shane rather wanted to punch Andy, actually. There was something about his face. Of course, Ilya Rozanov had impeccable timing and chose that moment to score. Shane sucked in a breath because it was a fucking cool one too, and he watched as Ilya pumped his arms over his head, skated over and crowed in Scott’s face before being engulfed by his team. They zoomed in his beaming face and Shane had to press his lips together to not smile along with him. Everyone else around the table groaned and the goal with the ensuing celebration added fuel to the fire. “I hear he’s honestly fucking disgusting,” Andy said. “Has like three women going and none of them know they’re the sidepiece.” Shane should honestly just laugh. Because it was so obviously stupid and made up shit. But he didn’t want to laugh. He actually kind of wanted to cry because it was so unfair. If they were out, they wouldn’t be saying this. If they were out, he could defend Ilya freely. In the back of his head, he knew they would just say something else. Would say he was cheating on Shane, probably. And still, the anger was building inside him. Brandon nodded at his teammate. “It’s people like him that give the rest of us a bad reputation. Everyone assuming we all cheat on our wives, like we’re all complete animals.” “Yeah, fuck, it’s so annoying,” Hayden said. “I get that shit all the time.” The third Tampa player finally chimed in as Shane was quietly planning his escape. “Probably has a bunch of kids everywhere. They’ll be their own hockey team in like 20 years.” Everyone else laughed at that. Obnoxiously loudly, like it was the funniest thing any of them had ever heard. Something snapped in him, something he’d been holding together with the force of his will and the clench of his teeth. Maybe it was the implication that Ilya would be a shitty dad that finally broke every single resolve. “He’s actually a good guy,” Shane said quietly, but the whole table fell silent for a moment. J.J. looked at him with his eyebrows raised, and the Tampa players still had signs of laughter in their expressions. “You’ve been enemies for like a decade,” Brandon said. “What do you mean, good guy?” “Rivals,” Shane corrected, his hands twisting in his lap. “And yeah, almost a decade. So I know him better than you, then, don’t I? And Rozanov isn’t just whatever you see on the ice or hear from the rumour mill.” “Alright, relax?” Brandon laughed, dismissive.

"Yeah, um. Thanks, I guess." Hollander's reply was vacant, and Ilya moved to gather his clothes and pull his boxers on, taking care to keep his movements smooth and casual. He had to get away. Now. Before he did or said something unfortunate. One word from Hollander, naked on the edge of the bed, derailed his plans. "Wait," Hollander pleaded, and there was something undeniably vulnerable in his voice. Ilya hesitated immediately, turned back to the bed. "Hollander?" --- Hotel room 1822 in Montreal, February 2011. What if Ilya did stay a little longer?

“Hey, Hollander, did you see the news about Rozanov?” Shane’s head snaps up and he almost gives himself whiplash. It’s deja vu, and it throws him back to that moment last season when Ilya’s father passed and he went MIA. His teammates had speculated, but Shane had known the truth – Ilya’s father had passed and he’d flown back to Russia to take care of family matters. “No?” He states simply, because he doesn’t trust his tongue to not betray him. What could Ilya possibly have done that would get him on the news? A phone is passed over, and Shane squints against the light and the tiny font of the news article. In big, bold letters the title reads ‘HOCKEY STAR ILYA ROZANOV SEVERELY INJURED IN CAR CRASH.’ It’s accompanied by a generic picture from the Boston news channel, but Shane doesn’t scroll down any further. He can’t. He doesn’t think his brain is capable of any thoughts currently. The phone drops out of his shaking hand and he realizes belatedly that tears are blurring his vision. “I gotta go.” --- OR, Ilya is in a car accident. Shane hurries to be by his side, and outs them in the process. Set during the year Ilya is playing for Boston.

Shane distantly registers that he is having a panic attack. But that doesn’t make sense, isn’t his chest moving? His heart beating? Then why can’t he breathe? It is probably because his breath is somewhere out there in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

About a month after Las Vegas, Ilya has his day with the Stanley Cup. He texts Shane to fly to Boston and celebrate with him, and they have angsty sex with the Cup in the room. FYI: It's a superstition that touching the Cup before you've won it will prevent your team from winning it. Thursday July 17, 2014 12:46pm Lily: What are you doing this weekend? Jane: Nothing. Why? Lily: Come to Boston Jane: Why? Lily: 🙄 Jane: Aren’t you in Moscow? Lily: Not yet. Come to Boston Lily: The 19th Jane: What? I can’t! That’s this Saturday Lily: Will be worth your while 😉 Jane: No way 1:24pm Jane: Flight lands at 3 Lily: 😘 *** “Are you fucking kidding me?” Hollander dropped his duffel bag, jaw slack with disbelief. Ilya stretched his arms out in welcome, a wide smile on his face. “Glad you could make it.” Sitting in the middle of his luxury penthouse was three feet of gleaming silver, practically winking between them. Ilya leaned over, resting his arms over the top of the Stanley Cup. “This is why you texted me?” Anger twisted in Hollander’s eyes, and Ilya immediately knew he’d made the right choice on how to spend his day with the Cup. “Thought I’d let you see it for yourself.” Ilya grinned. “You will probably not get another chance to be so close to it, so.” “God, fuuuck you.” Hollander rolled his entire head as he said it, looking to the ceiling as though it might have some answers. “Yes.” Ilya smirked, nodding. Hollander turned back sharply. “So that’s it? You wanna fuck me with the Stanley Cup in the room?” And there was that heat, the exact reason Ilya had known Hollander was the perfect person to celebrate with. Internally, he felt like cheering. Instead, he sauntered over, grabbing Hollander by the waist and pulling him close. The look in his eyes was so murderous it was making Ilya giddy. Hollander hadn’t even been there for five minutes, and it was already giving him a head rush. He hadn’t known if he would show up. After the NHL Awards, Ilya told himself he’d let it rest this summer. He’d enjoyed the Cup parade. He’d seen Svetlana. He’d delayed his flight to Moscow once, then twice. But now a month had passed, and on late nights and in morning showers, he could not shake the mental image of Shane Hollander jerking off for him in a Las Vegas hotel suite. The thought of that obedience alone had already made him come into his fist more times than he could count. “I’ll let you touch it.” Ilya purred, pushing his hips into Hollander’s, lining their cocks up through their sweatpants. “If you want.” Hollander tried to pin him against the wall, but Ilya had already moved on to stripping clothes off of him, piece by piece, as he tugged him further into the room. He felt cold metal hit his back and wobble, and Hollander immediately let him go, jumping back three feet. “I swear to God, Rozanov, if you let me anywhere near that thing—” “Shh, shh.” Ilya cooed, returning the Cup to its standing position before pulling Hollander back into his arms. Hollander spooked easily, and he was well aware that he was already walking a fine line. In an effort to calm him down, he kissed him, enjoying how quickly he softened in response. “Is okay. You will probably never get one of these either way.” Hollander’s nostrils flared in an intoxicating mixture of fury and arousal. “Get. Fucked.” “Am hoping to,” Ilya leaned down, dragging his lips along Hollander’s jaw and tracing teasing fingers along the soft skin beneath his shirt. Hollander exhaled, closing his eyes as he fought the inevitable, but Ilya could already feel him growing hard against him.

Ilya let himself soften into it. He’d missed this, the simple camaraderie between teammates. He did feel lonely, but in some ways he felt safer with this team, and Shane had given him that, it was because of Shane that he moved to Ottawa. All the good things in his life curved back to Shane. Looking around, he tried to imagine him here, not Shane Hollander the hockey player, but his Shane, the man who made the darkest rooms feel like home. He felt suddenly certain that they would welcome him with love and respect. And, God help him, he was still hoping like an idiot that Shane would walk through the door. Ilya tightened his grip on his roasting stick, jaw set, trying to divert his thoughts back to the present, when a ripple went through the group. Conversation dipped, then stopped completely. “Um… what the fuck,” Dillon muttered, eyes flicking toward the house. “Is that Shane Hollander?” Or Shane decides to go get his man after seeing Ilya’s instagram post in Chap.23 of TLG.

It was a Tuesday morning in late December, and Shane was mid-protein smoothie when his phone buzzed with a surprising notification. A direct message from Troy Barrett, who he had never met or talked to. But he followed back when Troy followed him, mostly out of curiosity. And it was definitely weird to be getting a message from him.
Remember when Troy thought about asking for Shane's phone number? What would have happened if he actually acted on it?
