  1. Shane gets drunk, way too drunk, and as they say, drunk words are sober thoughts. Shane has always been more open and unfiltered when drunk, which is why he doesn't drink often, but he needed it… until he's alone with Ilya in his bed in the morning and everything comes back in flashes of pure vulnerability.

  2. Shane’s breath stutters, then steadies. His hands curl into the fabric of Ilya’s sweater, holding him close. When Ilya’s mouth lingers a little longer in one spot, Shane hums, soft and content. “You’re going to leave marks,” Shane says quietly, not stopping him. “Yes,” Ilya replies just as softly. There’s no teasing in his voice now, only certainty. “Is about time.” — Ilya admires Shane in the safety of Shane’s cottage.

  3. Two certainties defined Shane Hollander's life: he was falling in love with Ilya Rozanov, and he was keeping a career-ending secret. When Ilya discovers Shane's suppressants on the heels of seeing Shane injured during a game, fear makes them say things they both regret. Nine months later at the All-Star Game, accidentally running into Ilya in the hotel elevator triggers a breakthrough heat—forcing the two idiots to finally talk (and fuck). -- Contains spoilers for those who have only watched the show, and for The Long Game. A/B/O AU that diverges from canon right after Shane is injured in Chapter 21 (and episode 5) of Heated Rivalry. Happy ending!

  4. “Arti-SEE-anal butt cream cake,” Ilya says, louder, stubbornly proud. “What? Why you laugh? They say it is arti-SEE-anal butt cream frosting. I say same thing.” Shane pinches the bridge of his nose. “Buttercream, Ilya. Butter-cream.” A sprinkle-shot challenge, a toddler-esque fight with JJ, and a fake fireplace later, Shane realizes this might be the best birthday ever. Shane spends the afternoon leaning against the kitchen counter with loops of icing ideas running through his brain, because he knows Ilya has been pacing for ten minutes straight. Pacing is not new in their apartment—post-game pacing, pre-game pacing, pacing whenever Shane leaves a stray sock on the floor—but this pacing is special. Ilya mutters words in Russian, then French, then some mashed-up bastardization that probably counts as a new dialect. His phone screen glows in his palm, speaker volume turned up so loud the hold music hisses thinly through the kitchen. “‘Froosteenk,’” he snarls at the air, rolling his eyes to the ceiling like the light fixture personally offended him. Shane leans on the island and smirks. “It’s ‘frosting.’” “That is what I say.” Ilya swipes his hand through the air. “Froosteenk.” “Listen, it’s froooosting. Lengthen the vowel.” Ilya scowls harder and jabs the phone screen. “Do not correct me. I know words. I am four languages.” “You are four languages,” Shane says. “You are also saying ‘frosting’ like it murdered your mother.” Ilya spins, the cord on their kitchen window blinds tangling around his forearm as he walks. The operator finally picks up—some cheerful woman whose voice sits at the pitch only golden retriever puppies can hear. “Hello, this is Kara at Sweet Slice Bakery. How can I help—” “I want big cake with…with…” Ilya loses it, hand waving, brows furrowing. “You know. Happy birthday Shane. Chocolate inside. White…” He hesitates. “White…froosteenk.” There is a tiny pause from Kara. “I’m sorry?” Ilya huffs out a breath, glances at Shane, then stomps toward him with the phone held out like it might catch fire. “They make me talk nonsense. I have NHL contract but cannot say cake.” He thrusts the phone at Shane’s chest. Shane takes it, biting his lip to stifle laughter, and switches to the smooth, effortless tone of a man conquering cake orders. “Hi, sorry, uhm, he wants a chocolate cake with vanilla frosting, twelve-inch round, simple ‘Happy birthday, Shane’ in blue piping.” He listens, nodding, wraps an arm around Ilya’s waist when Ilya leans against him like a scowling oak tree. “Pickup Friday morning works.” Kara sweetly confirms and the call ends. Shane hangs up, sets the phone on the counter, and turns toward Ilya with blatant glee. “There. Cake secured. And no one accidentally ordered ‘frosted sin’.” Ilya’s eyes narrow. “That is what she thinks I say?” “You mangled it so hard it sounded like ‘frosted sin.’ Which...honestly sounds delicious. Maybe you invented a new dessert.” “I am terrifying athlete. I fight bears in Siberia.” Ilya grabs Shane by the waist and lifts him until his butt hits the counter. “Little stubborn Hollywood boy should fear me.” The smug retort Shane stored up dissolves when Ilya leans in and kisses him, a smooth mouth pressing against Shane’s and humming softly. Shane curls his fingers in Ilya’s hair and nips his lower lip. “My big, scary Russian,” he murmurs against the kiss, tone thick with affection, “defeated by buttercream.” Friday morning rolls in with the bakery’s doorway chime squealing like a bird with a sinus infection, and Ilya ducks his six-foot-three frame beneath the string of paper cupcakes hanging across the ceiling. He announces himself to the bewildered teenager behind the counter by slapping both palms on the glass and declaring, “We are here for froosteenk doom.” Shane, who is still rubbing sleep out of his eyes, takes a leisurely half-step forward. “We’re picking up the Hollander order.” He flashes the employee a smile so easy the kid practically levitates to the back room. Ilya folds his arms, eyes on the cake boxes lining the counter, chest puffed like the bakery is his arena. “Ask them for extra…sprankle glitter,” he says under his breath. “Sprankle glitter?” “You know. The crunchy little sugar people.” “Sugar…people.” “Yes. You put on top. Sprankle glitter.” Ilya nods with solemn conviction. Shane has no idea what sprankle glitter might be, but he would arm-wrestle every pastry chef in the city if that is what it took to keep this glower directed at desserts. “We’ll see what they have,” he says, palms up, when the box is presented like a sacred relic. The design is simple, blue script gliding over white icing, perfect for the team dinner they’ll hold later. Ilya stares at the words, the corners of his mouth twitching upward, his thumb rubbing over the cardboard lid like he just landed a hat trick. The kid looks at Ilya the way people look at grizzlies in national parks. “Do you, um, need anything else?” Ilya clears his throat. “Do you sell sprankle glitter?” Shane can’t help himself. “He means sprinkles.”

Once Shane’s on the road, Ilya undoes his seatbelt causing Shane to react immediately. “What are you doing?” he asks as Ilya moves over the middle console and gets his hands on Shane. “Just relax,” Ilya tells him. He works quickly to undo Shane’s pants and get his half hard cock out of his pants. “Fuck,” Shane moans as Ilya wraps his hand around it. “Ilya, I’m driving.” OR Shane and Ilya go to the cottage for the weekend for Yuna & David's wedding anniversary party and Ilya gets a little impatient on the way there.

  7. “I said I’m fine.” “You don’t sound fine.” “Why does it matter how I sound?” Ilya spins back around, frustration spilling over. “Why is there always something? Tone, face, body language. Maybe I’m just fucking tired, Shane. Maybe I don’t have the energy to be ‘okay’ correctly.” Shane swallows. “I’m not asking you to be okay.” “It feels like it,” Ilya scoffs. “It feels like if I don’t say the right words, if I don’t say them the right way, you’ll keep pushing until you get something out of me.” — Ilya’s mother’s birthday sends Ilya down a rough episode, in which Shane tries understanding him.

Ilya picks up on the third ring, breathing heavily into the phone. Shane hears a door slam shut through the device. “Do not yell at me.”

Shane stares at the half-empty bottle of vodka on the coffee table. “You suck.”

“I suck? I scored hat-trick! In your stupid body! I have not eaten in six hours, Hollander. I have not pissed. I have not laid down. I want to go home.”

  10. Leah and Max invited Shane and Ilya on their podcast to get the juicy details now that they're out. Contains spoilers for The Long Game! I saw this prompt from Tnw99404 and lined up with something that I thought would happen when I was reading The Long Game (I thought they might come out on ESPN, talking about their relationship and the homophobia they faced) - Shane wants the focus to be on hockey, not their relationship, and he’s tired of fielding questions about it every game. Ilya gets it; it was a bit of a shock to the league. So they agree to do one low-key, honest interview, no glossy magazine spreads, no dramatic photoshoots, just a casual, tell-all conversation to get everything out there so people will finally stop asking. They choose their friends from camp, Leah and Max, who run a small but beloved hockey podcast. Transcript of episode 236 of Babes in Hockey Land: Ilya: -so then I- Shane: Ilya! They're recording! Leah: Good morning, afternoon, or evening to all of you in Hockey Land! By popular demand, we have professional hockey's it couple, Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander! Max: Thanks for being here, guys! Shane: No problem, it's always a pleasure to see you both. Max: We're pretty lucky to have you here, it seems like everyone is talking about you two coming out as a couple. Ilya: Yes, because we're the most beautiful couple. Shane: Ilya! Ilya: What? Is true. Leah: You guys are adorable and also so gross. Max: But I think everyone wants to know how did it happen? You've been famously rivals ever since you were signed, maybe even since your junior hockey days. Shane (hushed): Ilya, how much are we revealing? Ilya: Everything. Shane: We met at World Juniors but - Ilya: I wanted to jump on him right away, but I waited until after we were both signed. Shane: You waited? Leah: Wait, wait, wait - when exactly? Shane: The summer before our first seasons. Max: Holy shit! Seriously? Shane: It wasn't what you think! Actually, maybe it is. Leah: I want details but - Shane: Well, um, we saw each other at a commercial shoot, do you remember the one where we’re facing off, for CCM? Max: Oh yes, very well. I remember my friends and I would yell “Kiss!” At the TV when it was on. Leah: What happened? Ilya: Shane couldn’t contain himself in the shower afterwards- Shane: Motherfucker, I’m not the one who - Ilya: Oh you loved it, sweetheart. After that, we met sometimes to have sex. Max: Like fuck buddies? Shane: Yeah, I guess that’s the best way to say it. Max: Anything memorable about that time you’d like to share? Shane: Um… Ilya: Should I tell everyone about the night I won MVP and we went to my penthouse…? Shane: Don’t you dare! Leah: And this went on for - ? Shane: Years. Until - Ilya: You fell in love with me. Shane: Shut up, you fell in love with me too, asshole. Ilya: Hey, I'm handsome and very good at sex, and you are - Shane: So it was right around when I dated Rose Landry that things seem to change between us. Leah: Do I sense that there was some jealousy? Ilya: What?! No! Ok, a little. Shane: Well, that was when I knew I was gay and also in love with Ilya. Ilya: Aw, you love me! Shane: Shut up! You know we're married, right? Ilya: Yes, but I also know that we haven't really talked publicly about it yet. Max: Hear that! That's an exclusive! Leah: Ok, ok, let's get back to you realizing you're in love with your arch rival. Ilya: That was a strange time for both of us. Rose Landry, my father died, but it was when you get hurt, I knew I needed to have you as mine. Shane: I think it was when Scott Hunter came out, that changed things. We spent the summer together and made plans to really be together and plan a future. Max: And you're married now. Ilya: Yes, for citizenship of course. Shane: Oh shut up, you love me, and we have a dumb little dog and run the Irina Foundation together. It's hard to believe that the guy I found smoking outside an arena in Saskatchewan would be the love of my life and - Ilya: Oh Hollander, so sentimental. Shane: Shut up Rozanov (laughter) Leah: Speaking of sentimental, what's your favourite moment you can share? Shane: Well, hmmm... Ilya: That day at the cottage, when your father walked in while we were making out. Shane: Yeah, that was a good one. I wasn't out to my parents' yet, and um... my father walked in while we were kissing. So I came out to my parents and introduced them to my boyfriend, and my parents were so wonderful about it. It felt like the first day of the rest of our lives. Ilya: Yes, all that then we had very hot sex. Shane: Yes, we did. Max: So to get a bit serious, have you met any backlash? Shane: (sigh) Yes. That was why I decided to leave Montreal. That hurt a lot. Leah: I can only imagine. Shane: I got a lot of heat from management. After the video that Hayden posted went out, I was told not to issue a statement, my teammates were cold. It was all the things I was scared of about coming out. Ilya: My teammates were good. Very happy for me, but Crowell... Shane: (sigh) Yeah, Crowell. When he heard the rumour that I was gay, he called me into his office to warn me not to come out publicly. Max: I want to say I'm surprised but I'm not. Ilya: Yes, there’s a day we babysat for Hayden, and afterward, I thought maybe we could tell everyone and it wouldn’t be a problem, but then Crowell talked to Shane and scared him all

But you need a trim, your hair is turning into a mullet.” Shane runs his fingers through the silky strands again, inhaling the citrus scent of Ilya’s shampoo. For a moment, he’s tempted to bury his face in Ilya’s curls rather than cut them. 'What is mullet?' 'It’s uh - you know, business in the front, party in the back. Short in the front, long in the back.' 'This sounds terrible. Why would anybody want this?' 'They don’t. That’s why I’m saving you from it. So, stop squirming.' 17. Everything was almost perfect. The Centaurs were already having their best season in two decades, Shane had fit right in and was killing it on the ice, Ilya was married to the love of his life, and they finally didn't need to hide anymore. And yet…there was one thing standing in the way of perfection, and Ilya was trying very hard not to think about it too much in case it gave him a heart attack. Shane had been playing for the Centaurs, in Ottawa, with Ilya, for six weeks now and he still hadn't moved in. The summer had gone the way it always had. They spent all of it at the cottage, commuting to the camp together. Ilya had waited, wondering if Shane was going to take a weekend while their time was their own and bring his stuff up from Montreal, but he hadn't. He hadn't talked about it at all. Ilya had asked, when the first day of pretraining arrived, if they needed to go to Montreal first and Shane had just said, "Nah," eyes fixed on a text to Rose. They'd driven to Ottawa and Shane had slipped in Ilya's space like he always did, any time he visited. A routine came about naturally: practices, workouts, taking Anya for a walk, cuddling in front of the TV, fucking Shane's brains out. But time slipped away and Ilya abruptly realized a month and a half had gone by and Shane still hadn't moved in. He couldn't think of a way to ask about it that didn't sound accusatory. They'd lived apart for their entire relationship. The summers at the cottage were wonderful but they were frantic and stolen and fraught as well. And last summer, their first one out, had been almost entirely absorbed by wedding planning and running the camp. They'd never done this before - coming home to each other every night after practice and waking up together every morning before a game. Ilya couldn't help thinking…maybe it was too much for Shane. Maybe it was too much of Ilya's chaos for Shane's perfection. Maybe he was keeping one foot planted firmly in Montreal because he wasn't sure yet if he wanted to be here full time. So Ilya tried to make Shane feel welcome in quiet ways. "I moved the chest over so you could put a desk there," he said, as soon as Shane came home from his run. God, he looked delicious, all sweaty and pink-cheeked. "Hmm?" "I have my office upstairs but you do not, so I thought you could put a desk here." "Oh. Yeah? I don't think so. I only really need a desk in the summer and I have my office at camp for that. I'm fine with my laptop." Shane pressed a kiss to Ilya's cheek. "Did you have breakfast yet?" Ilya frowned at Shane's retreating back. "No, not yet." "Okay, I'll make eggs." ** A few days later, Ilya tried again. "We need more towels. I make you come so much you take many showers." Shane rolled his eyes. "Yeah, it has nothing to do with us both being professional athletes who work out for a living." "We need more sheets, too. Is that also an athlete thing?" "Shut up." "Which ones should we get? We could go shopping." Ilya felt like an idiot, sitting there like a lost puppy, hoping his husband would suggest a trip to Home Sense, as if that would mean something. But Shane just shrugged. "You can just order more of what you already have. I like the green ones." "Right, okay." What you already have. Cause they were Ilya's towels, and Ilya's sheets. And Shane was just a guest. Still. ** "We could get a new place?" Shane chewed on the end of his pen, eyes rolling up from his notebook to meet Ilya's. He frowned, confused. "Like another cottage?" "No, a different house. Leave this one." "You want to move?" Ilya shrugged. "Not really. But we could pick out somewhere new. We are married now." "I like it here. It's an easy drive to the arena. Plus I wouldn't want to uproot Anya." Shane scratched her behind her ears and she stretched out long. "Alright. You know I am happy to move for you, right?" He'd already moved all the way to fucking Canada for Shane, so that felt like a stupid thing to say. "I know." Shane yawned and tucked his toes under Ilya's thigh. "Think Coach will have us working on the PK tomorrow?" Ilya rubbed his thumb over the jut of Shane's ankle. "Yes, I think so." **

He was so dizzy and cold and unsteady after leaving Ilya's room, he didn't even remember if he HAD sent the text. His fingers were too numb to undo his shirt buttons, he felt like the floor was dropping out from beneath him, he was nauseous and exhausted and didn't know why he couldn't stop shaking, why couldn't he stop shaking...? From Jane: ww dnt v ks The text came through as gibberish, and “Fuck.” Ilya threw his clothes back on and ran to get to Shane's hotel room. He'd been too far in his head to pay attention to Shane being quiet and shivering after they were done. Shane had stumbled getting out of bed, bumped into furniture, struggled with the door and Ilya had heard it but he'd been too much of a coward to get out of bed and check and now his submissive was sending gibberish texts and that wasn't good. “Sorry sorry sorry.” Ilya muttered as he ran. “I’m coming.
