  1. He was used to being without her. The pain never went away but the sting became manageable; something he could tuck away and avoid ever thinking about. Except when he couldn’t. Like during Hockey Moms Weekend. Ilya’s mother had died when he was twelve. By the time he was truly an orphan, Ilya had spent most of his life without her than he had with her in it. He was used to being without her. The pain never went away but the sting became manageable; something he could tuck away and avoid ever thinking about. Except when he couldn’t. Like during Hockey Moms Weekend. It was a tradition across the league where the players’ mothers came for the weekend, spending time with the team for a brunch, a skate and some fun activites, and then traveling with the team to cheer them on at a game. It was fun! Everyone loved it! It was a way to appreciate the women in their lives who sat in the cold to watch them play and drove them to practice early in the morning and nursed their many bumps and bruises along the way. Not that Ilya would know. It wasn’t his first time, of course. His whole childhood he had gotten used to not looking up. Not as his classmates cheered at the sight of their mothers picking them up from school. Not as a child when he had gotten hurt and wanted someone to comfort him like other children got when they skinned their knees. Not as his teammates turned into babies the moment they scored their first professional goals and saw their mothers in the crowds or heard their proud voices over the phones. No. Ilya had trained himself. He had gotten used to keeping his eyes fixed on what was in his hands and Ilya had always made sure there was something in his hands. A phone, a puck, tape. Something in his hands to keep him occupied so he didn’t have to listen to what he never had. In Boston it had been his gear and then his phone, texting Jane and wondering if Shane turned into the same gushy child the rest of the players in the league got the moment their mothers stepped into the locker room with skates in their hands. His rookie year, the social media girl had admitted that she had made sure her team of interns knew not to pester Ilya that weekend for content. Her name had been Eliza and she had been kind. She hadn’t made a big thing of it. Just quiet gave Ilya some peace when he’d been dreading it for weeks. Ilya had made a fool of himself eating disgusting American snacks for a video for her to make up for the thoughtful gesture. But Ilya couldn’t hide away anymore. Not now that he was in Ottawa. For one, he was the captain and that came with a certain level of expectations. He was meant to set an example. Some people didn’t know how lucky they were to have mothers who embarrassed them. For another, his new team was annoyingly perceptive of his mood. In Boston, his teammates knew when to avoid him and not push for more. Ilya never told them and no one ever asked and he’d liked it this way. But the Centaurs were a different team. They cared about him and he loved them more than he thought himself capable of loving a group of people. The Centaurs were practically vibrating with excitement as the weekend steadily approached and Ilya didn’t want to ruin it. So, he put on a smile and tried not to wince at the sharp pain bursting behind his ribs as he forced himself to watch the first wave of mothers that came through the door for the team brunch. Wyatt and Evan waved down their mothers as if they couldn’t see them from ten feet away. Nick Chouinard took his mother’s luggage while playfully teasing her about over packing. Bood picked his mother off her feet in a hug that made even Ilya’s bones ache just watching. Each of them, elite athletes in their primes who had knocked out a few teeth and had mouths that could make even him blush sometimes. But they were all just big softies at heart. Ilya tried to stay out of his own head. He played his part. He stood up and greeted every one of their guests, charming and assuring them that yes, their darling boys absolutely did not get up into any trouble at all in the hotel rooms. They were perfectly good, well behaved angels who were always in bed on time and never in threat of being arrested ever. Each and every one of them cooed and awed over him until their sons got jealous and then Ilya made his excuses to find a quiet corner to nurse his headache and the ache he couldn’t shake from his lungs that made it hard to breathe. The room was a labor of love. The conference room had a wall of windows that looked out over the skyline of Ottawa where snow was trickling from some soft grey clouds in the sky. Several round tables were draped in table clothes with the team colors. Strings of fairy lights had been wrapped around center pieces of beautiful flower arrangements of white roses and sprigs of lavender. Several of the mothers had made a stop at the mimosa bar where freshly squeezed orange juice was waiting next to bottles of champagne and garnishes of raspberries and cranberries and strawberries and pretty much any berry catering could get their hands on. Brunch was a relaxed affair with a buffet of eggs, waffles, bacon, sausage, steamed asparagus with hollandaise sauce, and more fruit arranged in the shape of a peacock. There was an entire table dedicated to chocolate sweets and cheese. Music was playing softly in the background and Harris had set up a photo booth where Ilya was sure many of the mothers would be dragging their sons after a few more mimosas.

  2. A long weekend at Shane’s cottage is meant to be quiet, private, and uncomplicated. Then Ilya discovers canoes, wildlife, and the exact limits of Shane’s patience—and somewhere between turtles, bets, and stolen kisses, Shane realizes he’s already given Ilya more than a key. The cottage is supposed to be peaceful. That’s the whole point of it—Shane’s place, tucked into the trees where no one bothers them, where the lake is quiet and the neighbours are far enough away that privacy is a given rather than a carefully maintained illusion. Shane knows every creak in the floorboards because he chose the wood. Knows every window because he approved the placement. The dock he built with his dad one summer, the stone path Ilya helped lay last fall without being asked. It’s the one place Shane doesn’t have to perform, doesn’t have to be anything other than himself. Which is why, when Ilya suggested they spend a long weekend here, Shane didn’t just agree. He gave Ilya a key. Not permanently. Not with any ceremony or speech. Just—“Here. In case you get here before me.” Ilya had looked at it for a long moment, turning it over in his palm like it was something more than stamped metal. “Is for cottage?” he’d asked, even though it was obvious. “Yeah.” “Just for weekend?” Shane had hesitated, then shrugged, trying for casual. “Or, you know. Whenever.” Ilya’s expression had done something complicated—pleased and careful and maybe a little overwhelmed. He’d closed his fingers around the key and said, very quietly, “Okay.” He’d added it to his keyring that same day. Shane noticed. Now, standing on the dock watching Ilya gesture dramatically at the canoes, Shane thinks he should have known better than to expect a peaceful weekend. “Is too far,” Ilya calls from the shore, hands cupped around his mouth like Shane is somehow going to miss him from thirty feet away. Shane looks up from where he’s securing the second canoe to the post. “It’s not too far. It’s right there.” “Is *too far*,” Ilya repeats, more emphatically this time, gesturing at the water like it’s personally offended him. “Why do we need two boats?” “They’re canoes.” “This is what I say. Two boats.” Shane straightens, pushing his sunglasses up into his hair so Ilya can see he’s not kidding. “We need two because last time you nearly capsized us trying to—” “Was not capsizing.” “You stood up.” “Was looking at bird!” “In a *canoe*, Ilya.” Ilya waves this off like it’s a minor detail, already turning back toward the cottage. *Their* cottage, Shane thinks, and the thought sits warmer than it should. “We take one boat. I promise I do not stand.” “You’re not getting in a canoe with me.” Ilya stops. Turns around. The key—*Shane’s* key—glints on the ring hanging from his pocket. The look on his face is somewhere between offended and delighted. “You do not trust me?” “Not even a little bit.” “Shane.” Ilya presses a hand to his chest like he’s been mortally wounded. “After everything. After all this time. You think I would put you in danger?” “I think you’d get distracted by a loon and forget physics exists.” “Physics,” Ilya scoffs, already walking back down the dock with purpose. “I know physics very well.” “Then you know why standing up in a canoe is a bad idea.” Ilya reaches him, close enough now that Shane can see the exact moment his expression shifts from mock-injured to something more dangerous—playful, determined, the look he gets right before he does something inadvisable on the ice. “I make you deal,” Ilya says. Shane crosses his arms. “I’m listening.” “We take one boat—” “Canoe.” “—*one canoe*,” Ilya corrects, mouth twitching, “and if I stand, you can make me do anything you want for rest of weekend.” Shane raises an eyebrow. “Anything?”

  6. Ilya feels breathless as he walks into the cottage. The living room is a magic, Christmas wonderland. The lights covering the cottage cast a warm, golden hue all around, beams are covered in tinsel and garland. The tree is so big and beautiful, standing tall in the corner of the living room. The fireplace has been lit and is burning hot, the soft sound crackling of wood filling the air. He can’t help but think about the first time he walked into this cottage and how much has changed since then. Back then, when it was just Shane’s cottage. When it was a place where they came to hide, to finally love each other the way they both so desperately been craving for years. Now, it is their home. aka a cottage fic, just a few years down the road The drive to the cottage is long. So boring and long. It doesn’t help that there is a thick blanket of snow covering the roads and Shane is driving ten miles under the limit. Ilya can practically feel the anxiety radiating from his body, by the way his shoulders are tense and how hard he is gripping the wheel. “You drive like grandma. We would be there by now if you put foot down.” Ilya jokes from the back seat. Shane’s eyes briefly shift to the mirror so he can shoot daggers at his husband before turning his attention back to the road. “I’m being careful. We have precious cargo in the car.” Ilya rolls his eyes and smiles fondly. Because he is right, there is precious cargo in the car. And said precious cargo is too busy watching the snow flakes fall from the sky through the window — giggling and babbling away to herself as her father tries his best to not freak out in the driver seat. “Your papa, he worry for no reason. Isn’t that right, Iris.” Ilya says gently as he taps his daughter on her nose. Her soft button nose with speckles of freckles covering the bridge. So beautiful just like her father. Iris Hollander-Rozanov, 9 months old and the light of Ilya’s life. She is practically Shane’s twin, soft dark hair and twinkly wide eyes — not that Ilya is complaining. She rolls her head so she is looking up at Ilya now rather than out of the window. A smile spreads across her face, gummy and bright as she reaches up to press her chubby fingers into his cheeks. He lets out a soft gasp and Shane momentarily whips his head around. “What? Is she okay? Do I need to pull over?” “She’s fine. Eyes on road.” Shane huffs as he turns back round, his shoulders hitching up closer to his ears. “Sorry, I just-“ “I know,” Ilya cuts him off, because he does know. Shane has been freaking about this trip for nearly a month now. Getting himself worked up over the what if ’s and worse case scenario’s. He is an over-thinker, has always been. So naturally, when they became parents, his anxiety increased by 1000%. “Is okay. Only ten minutes until we are at the cottage.” Ilya says softly as he leans forward, reaching to rest his hand on Shane’s shoulder. He brushes his thumb over the soft skin of his neck and the tension begins to melt away. “I bet is looking very Christmassy.” He changes the subject as he leans back to sit more comfortably. Iris is still quietly babbling away beside him as she grabs for his finger. “Yeah, mom said she has gone all out. She wanted to make Iris’s first Christmas extra special.” Shane replies with a smile. It would be extra special, Ilya thinks. They don’t really come by the cottage during the winter, there really isn’t much point when the lake is frozen over. But Yuna thought it would be nice for them all to get away for a few days, to be able to celebrate together as a family in private — which both Shane and Ilya agreed easily.

  8. Being a professional athlete in a contact sport is an exercise in enduring pain. Sometimes you get benched for three weeks because you have a broken cheekbone after you get hit in the face with a slap shot. Sometimes you play through a strained quad, a bruised shoulder, a mild fever. Most times, it’s just the constant, unending soreness that comes with pushing your body to its limit every single day. Every athlete had an injury they hated most, though, one that’s particularly painful or recurrent or just annoying. Ilya fucking hated injuring his ribs. There is almost nothing you can do with your body that doesn't involve moving your torso, and the pain is deep, throbbing, and gets just a tiny bit worse every time you breathe. Sitting up hurts, lying down hurts, walking hurts, and worst of all, coughing fucking hurts. or Ilya is sick and injured in the off-season. Luckily, Shane loves him so very much and is there to take care of him.

  9. “I don’t want to smell that place again,” he says. “I don’t want to hear that language around me like that. I don’t want to be small again.” His chest tightens. His breathing gets shallow. He hates this part. The moment when the past stops being something he remembers and starts being something he feels. “I can’t,” he repeats. “I really can’t.” There’s a long pause. Then Ilya exhales shakily and adds, quieter now, almost breaking, “But I can’t leave her alone.” or; when ilya's niece loses her mother and reaches out to him in secret, he returns to russia with shane to get her out of an unsafe home.
