The idea was simple: make Ilya wear a mic during practice, film it, let him be his entertaining self and get a viral post out of it. Harris should have gotten an easy win there. Instead he gets invested in his captain's latest lovers' quarrel and learns that athletes can be emotionally mature... kind of.

Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.

In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.

But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.

Shane has a migraine before the game. He thinks he is good enough to play up until the second when he throws up all over Ilya Rozanov’s jersey. Yes, on the ice.

The Voyageurs ask Shane to join FanMail in order to foster a better connection with fans. Internet sleuths start to notice some interesting details in the background of Shane’s videos, and then the internet does...what the internet does.

Or Shane and Ilya are granted an opportunity to come out on their own terms. Sort of. And in they do it in a very Ilya way. (Surprisingly, it is Shane’s idea)

After not speaking for over four months, Ilya is perturbed by headlines that Shane has suddenly married an American pop star. Excerpt: Shane Hollander opened the door to find a 6’3 seething Russian in the hallway. “What…” he angled his head to peer around Ilya’s rigid, imposing figure. “What are you doing here?” Ilya shoved a magazine at him. “Annul it.” “No seriously. Where’d you even come from?” “Hollander.” Icy warning wrapped around each syllable. “Aren’t you presenting at the ESPYs tonight?” “Am home sick,” Ilya barked, pushing his way into Shane’s apartment. “Is true?” he gestured toward the magazine Shane had yet to acknowledge. “End it. Now.” “End what…” Shane looked down, frowning when he realized it was the fucking 'National Enquirer'. What the actual fuck? “Oh…” he breathed, the top box on the front page catching his eye. A picture of him and Mia Voegele taken in a dark club with the tag, ‘Secret Marriage?'
