  2. After Ilya retires he becomes a wag, taking his and Shane’s daughter to games to cheer for him. Based on a tweet I saw abt Ilya being a wag It’s only been a few months since Ilya Rozanov retired from the Ottawa Centaurs, he still had good hockey left in him, don’t get him wrong, but his love for hockey was never stronger than the love for his daughter—their daughter. Little Irina Hollander-Rozanov, the only person Shane and Ilya loved more than each other, had come into the world a year and a half ago. Shane had discussed her future in great lengths with Ilya when they found out she’d arrive in nine short months and what that meant for their careers. Ilya was grateful he had the opportunity to play alongside some of the best hockey players in the world over his long career, he wanted to keep doing that, but the second that little hand wrapped around his finger he made up his mind. He was going to be the best father he could be, no matter how absolutely terrified he’d been. Irina had been born during the season, after her birth Ilya got his affairs in order and attended a press conference where he announced he’d be retiring at the end of the season. He prefaced that he was getting older, it was getting harder to recover. That was no lie, being in his thirties was making it harder to bounce back after games. But his ultimate reason for retiring: he had a daughter and he absolutely needed to be present for her life. Shane watched his retirement announcement from the sidelines, holding their daughter in the media room of the Centaurs arena watching his husband answer too many questions. His many words carefully arranged with his warm voice cradling every syllable, he noticed a few tears had fallen from his eyes. They achieved their dreams. Together. And now they get to do the best thing they’ve ever done. Raise a child together. Shane was named captain of the Centaurs after Ilya retired. He hadn’t been a captain in years but this season he’d lead this team and he’d make damn sure to make Ilya proud. It was their home opener of the season, the arena was packed to the brim with fans—most wearing Hollander or Rozanov jerseys. They’d all come to watch the team Ilya spent so long leading take on their new leader and hopefully remain the same beloved team. Ilya was still getting ready at home, of course he’d attend this game. He wouldn’t miss it for the world. Even if Shane had told him over and over, “You don’t have to come.” It would take every supernatural force in the world to keep Ilya away from that arena today. He pulled on a jersey, a Hollander one, something he never thought he’d be doing. “Papa!” Ilya turned around to see little Irina being held by Yuna Hollander, they wouldn’t miss this game either. “Lisichka, look at you.” He smiled at her little jersey. It was of course a Hollander one except the name on the back had been replaced with ‘Dada’. “Dada is going to love this.” He took her in his arms kissing her cheeks making her giggle. They made it to the arena just before warm up’s. Ilya had been walking around with Irina on his hip showing her around the arena, he ran into Harris who’d been running back and forth. “Ilya! And baby!” Harris smiled. “The guys are still in the locker room if you want to pop in and say hi.” “I think yes,” Ilya looked at Irina. “What you think, solnyshko?” She just grabbed at his face and giggled. “Let’s go see dada.” “Dada!” She yelled. “Yes, dada!” Ilya smiled. Ilya followed Harris into the locker room. The team had been sitting around suiting up for the game, some stretching, and others taking their time getting their mind right. “We have visitors!” Harris announced. Ilya saw the guys look up and immediately start pushing each other out of the way to get to Irina. They all fought for her attention, prompting her to see who’s name she’d say first. Her attention quickly went from the group to Shane pushing his teammates aside. “Dada!” She smiled wide. “Baby!” Shane took her in his arms, placing huge kisses on her cheeks. “Wow! Look at this. Wearing my jersey! Much better than papa’s, huh.” Shane felt like he would explode from the cuteness. “What about your husband?” Ilya crossed his arms. Shane smiled at Ilya, he wrapped one arm around Ilya’s waist planting a quick kiss on him that earned lots of chirping from his teammates. “You look great too.” Shane didn’t know that this is where his life would lead after all those years of being so scared of the world knowing he loved Ilya Rozanov, but it was so worth it now. “That’s better,” Ilya ran a hand down Shane’s chest resting on the new ‘C’ that graced his chest. “Captain.” He smiled at Shane, he saw a blush creep up his neck. “Don’t ruin my team.” “My team now and how can I lose when I have the best good luck charms?” Shane was filled with pure happiness, nothing could be better than his little family here to cheer him on. He couldn’t remember why he told Ilya not to come in the first place, he would’ve missed out on this.

  4. Everyone can see it. In the way Ilya Rozanov’s voice gentles, in the way his focus narrows, in the way every argument ends the same way. Set post–The Long Game, this is a study of marriage, conflict, and the slow, irrevocable shift of a man who loves too openly to hide it. Or, five times they argue and Ilya gives in, and one time it becomes clear he always will.

  5. “Why are you calling me, Hollander?” Ilya asks more harshly than he means to. But he’s tired, and impatient, and strung out on a mixture of emotions and longing for the voice on the other end of the phone. “If nothing is wrong, why are you calling?”

“Will you come?” Shane asks, and Ilya’s heart sinks before he can even say the rest of it. He shouldn’t have asked. He should have just let Shane ramble. “To…to the wedding?”

The lump in his throat feels insurmountable. But he manages to say, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

Shane doesn’t acknowledge it. “I invited alllll these people, but the only one I actually care if they come or not is you.” He stops and giggles. “Isn’t that weird?”

“Yes,” Ilya replies, because it is. You shouldn’t want your years-long situationship at your wedding. He doesn’t want the drunken musings of Shane Hollander to give him hope.

    _________

Or Shane gets engaged. Ilya gets a phone call. Everything breaks. But sometimes breaking is what finally makes room for the truth.

  6. “Ah,” Ilya said, grinning, going for the joke. Shane looked up, curious. “So being boring is genetic?” He expected laughter. Or the way Shane would roll his eyes even as he melted, the way that made the teasing feel welcome. Instead, Shane’s smile disappeared completely. It wasn’t dramatic. It just… went. Like a light switched off. “Yeah,” Shane said, clearing his throat, forcing the word out before it could crack. “I guess so.” He took a step back, creating space that felt suddenly necessary, like he might suffocate if he drifted any closer. Every instinct in him screamed to leave. To put distance between himself and this feeling and the source of it before it swallowed him whole

  8. They sat in silence for a few seconds and watched the surf rolling in and out, in and out. Shane eased one knee up, resting his arm across it, watching Ilya out of the corner of his eye with infinite patience. “You wanna talk about it?” he asked, voice soft enough that the wind almost stole it. He did want to talk. His chest was full of words. Too full. But the idea of opening all that up? Of watching Shane recoil, or worse, watching him care? It was unbearable. The thought of being comforted by Shane, of feeling that warmth and knowing he couldn’t keep it, nearly crushed him. Ilya kept his eyes on the water, jaw tight. Shane reached out slowly and carefully and let the tip of one finger trace the outside of Ilya’s forearm. Just a whisper of contact. A question, not a demand. Ilya looked at him. Shane gave a small tilt of his hand, beckoning him closer. “Come here.” **** A deviation from the All-Star weekend in Tampa: Instead of finding Shane on the bench, it’s Ilya alone with his ghosts and falling apart in ways he never lets anyone see. Until Shane sits beside him. The tide is ceaseless and the night is heavy. Canon diverges; feelings don't.

  9. Shane loves Christmas. He always has. A quiet time surrounded by family, with good food and presents, and time to let his brain just sit. He can’t wait to bask in his parents' love and attention, being with people who he (mostly) doesn’t have to hide or perform around. Though he’d be lying if he said that his thoughts have been solely on them. Because every time he’s not busy, he finds his thoughts wandering to Ilya Rozanov. What is Rozanov doing? Does he even celebrate Christmas? Does he wish he could spend it back home in Russia? Does he have anyone to spend Christmas with? Would he want to spend it with Shane if he could? Fucking, of course. They would be fucking, because that’s what they do. Always. There is absolutely nothing else there. But still, in the quietest moments, he wonders… _____ Or, Christmas keeps finding Shane and Ilya at every stage of their lives— from rivals, to lovers, to husbands

  10. Ilya stands in the hallway of Shane’s parents’ house with his boots still on, shoulders slightly hunched, fingers worrying the sleeve of his sweater. He’s been here before, plenty of times, but tonight feels different. Tonight means something. Christmas lights glow along the banister, warm gold reflected in the windowpanes, and somewhere deeper in the house there’s the low murmur of voices and the clink of dishes. He leans toward Shane and whispers, for the third time since they parked the car. “Are you sure it’s okay? Like, really okay?” Shane smiles at him, soft and fond, the way he does when he understands exactly what’s going on in Ilya’s head. He cups Ilya’s elbow, thumb brushing reassurance into skin. “Yes,” he says gently. “They want you here. I want you here.” Ilya nods, even though his chest still feels too full, like something might spill over if he breathes wrong. Christmas with a family. A real one. Not a hotel, not a team dinner, not a quiet night pretending it doesn’t matter. This matters so much it scares him. - Ilya's first Christmas with the Hollanders.

  11. “I wanted to apologize for what I said last week.” Oh. This was certainly uncharted territory. “You really don’t have to–” “I really do.” Hunter interrupted him firmly. Shane didn’t know how to respond to the conviction in Hunter’s voice or to the entire subject matter of this call, so he kept his mouth shut. “It wasn’t appropriate of me to insinuate anything about your life outside of the rink.” He continues after a short beat. “If there’s anything going on I promise I’m not against it. Especially since–” — — — or: after the fight between Scott Hunter and Shane Hollander, Scott gives Shane a call and things are revealed.

Cliff ignores it, staring past Pike’s shoulder. “Fucking Christ, fucking—are they—” “Shut the fuck up, shut up, shut your fucking mouth, Marlow.” “They’re—fuck, fuck, I didn’t mean to, I didn’t—” Cliff finds himself looking at Pike almost pleadingly, a weird helplessness buzzing in his fingertips and toes. “I didn’t kno—” “You don’t know shit,” Pike says savagely, physically putting himself between Cliff and the space Hollander used to be. “Shut your fucking mouth, you don’t know anything.”] OR, Cliff Marlow's POV of The Hit and the aftermath, as he starts to put a few things together.
