PS: Prompt is related to the events of The Long Game, so there will be spoilers for the plot of that book! _______ After Shane and Ilya are outed in the events of The Long Game, Montréal and Ottawa play seven games against each other in the Eastern Conference. The Centaurs still love their captain, of course. The Voyageurs, however, are not so united. _______ A.K.A - Five times Shane’s team was an asshole to him, the one time Ilya got to do something about it, and the obvious humiliation ritual that is the Centaurs playing a game against a post-Hollander era Voyageurs.

Just like every season, the Ottawa Centaurs organise a family day. And just like every season, Ilya intends to skip it. He's convinced otherwise and surprised once he gets there. Set between Heated Rivalry and The Long Game, but not spoiler-free for TLG. “Fine,” Shane said, leaning in to kiss Ilya. “But you’ll have to go to the Centaurs’ family day, or this is all off the table.” If this was how all blackmail worked, then Ilya was suddenly very much a fan of the concept. “I will go to the Centaurs’ family day,” Ilya promised solemnly. “And then you will be naked in a hotel room for me. Are you happy now? Can we continue making dinner?”

When their son comes home with split knuckles and a suspension for throwing the first punch, Shane and Ilya just want to know one thing: what did the other kid do to deserve it? Or in which the Hollander-Rozanovs learn that raising good kids sometimes means teaching them when the rules are worth breaking. Shane’s phone rings at 12:39 PM on a Wednesday, which is already strange because people don’t usually call during the day unless something’s wrong. He’s in the kitchen making Sachiko’s favorite snacks for when she gets home from school — apple slices with that specific brand of almond butter she likes, the one with honey — when he sees the number. Ottawa West Secondary School. His stomach drops. “Hello?” “Mr. Hollander? This is Principal Matheson from Ottawa West Secondary.” Shane sets down the knife he’s been using, his hand suddenly unsteady. “Yes?” “I’m calling about Viktor. There’s been an incident at school today, and we need you and your husband to come in immediately.” “An incident?” Shane’s voice comes out higher than he intends. “Is he hurt? Is he okay?” “He’s not injured, but there was a physical altercation, and-” “A physical altercation? Viktor?” Shane almost laughs because the idea is so absurd. Viktor, who cried for an hour when he accidentally stepped on a snail when he was nine. Viktor, who mediates arguments between his friends instead of participating in them. Viktor, who’s never even raised his voice at his little sister despite her sometimes stealing his things and hiding them around the house. “Yes, Mr. Hollander. Viktor punched another student. We have a zero-tolerance policy for violence, and-” “We’ll be right there,” Shane interrupts, his heart hammering. “Twenty minutes.” He hangs up and immediately calls Ilya, who answers on the second ring. “Solnyshko, I am at store. They are out of the good pasta, the one Vitya likes. Should I-” “Ilya.” Shane’s voice cracks slightly. “We need to go to Viktor’s school. Now.” The line goes quiet for a beat. Then: “What is wrong? Is he hurt?” “No, he’s—they said he punched someone. They said he was in a fight.” “Vitya?” Ilya sounds as disbelieving as Shane feels. “Our Vitya?” “That’s what they said.” “I am coming home now. Two minutes.” Shane leans against the counter, his mind racing through possibilities. Viktor’s been quiet lately, maybe a little withdrawn, but Shane had chalked that up to typical teenage stuff. Hormones. Growing pains. The universal adolescent need to assert independence from one’s parents. Had Shane missed something? Had they both missed something? The front door bangs open, and Ilya strides in, still wearing his jacket, car keys jangling in his hand. “Okay,” Ilya says, slightly breathless. “Okay. We go now. Is probably mistake, yes? Maybe is different Viktor.” “There’s only one Viktor Hollander-Rozanov at that school, Ilya.” Ilya runs a hand through his hair, which is still thick despite being in his mid-forties, though there are silver threads now mixed in with the light brown curls. “Then is mistake in other way. Vitya does not fight. Is not who he is.” But Shane’s remembering the way Viktor went quiet at dinner two nights ago when Sachiko asked him how school was. The way he’d pushed food around his plate and said “Fine” in a tone that clearly meant it wasn’t fine at all. Shane had meant to follow up, had meant to talk to him, but then Sachiko had spilled her juice and the moment had been lost in the chaos of cleanup and bedtime routines. “We should go,” Shane says quietly. The drive to the school is tense. Ilya’s knuckles are white on the steering wheel, and he keeps muttering things in Russian under his breath. Shane catches “ne mozhet byt” more than once, which he knows means “It can’t be.” “Whatever happened,” Shane says, trying to convince himself as much as Ilya, “There has to be an explanation. Viktor wouldn’t just hit someone for no reason.” “Of course not,” Ilya snaps, but Shane knows the anger isn’t directed at him. “Our boy is good. Is sweet. Is-” He struggles for the word. “Is gentle.” Shane’s throat tightens. Viktor is gentle. He’s the kid who brings home injured birds and nurses them back to health in shoeboxes. Who reads to Sachiko every night before bed even though she’s perfectly capable of reading to herself. Who still, at fourteen, will curl up next to Shane on the couch during movies and rest his head on Shane’s shoulder. The school parking lot is half-empty, most students still in afternoon classes. Shane and Ilya walk quickly toward the main entrance, and Shane notices the way Ilya’s jaw is set, the way he’s holding himself like he’s about to step onto the ice for a crucial playoff game. “Let me do the talking,” Shane says as they approach the main office. Ilya shoots him a look. “When have I ever let you do all talking?” “Ilya, I mean it. We need to stay calm and-”

He was used to being without her. The pain never went away but the sting became manageable; something he could tuck away and avoid ever thinking about. Except when he couldn’t. Like during Hockey Moms Weekend. Ilya’s mother had died when he was twelve. By the time he was truly an orphan, Ilya had spent most of his life without her than he had with her in it. He was used to being without her. The pain never went away but the sting became manageable; something he could tuck away and avoid ever thinking about. Except when he couldn’t. Like during Hockey Moms Weekend. It was a tradition across the league where the players’ mothers came for the weekend, spending time with the team for a brunch, a skate and some fun activites, and then traveling with the team to cheer them on at a game. It was fun! Everyone loved it! It was a way to appreciate the women in their lives who sat in the cold to watch them play and drove them to practice early in the morning and nursed their many bumps and bruises along the way. Not that Ilya would know. It wasn’t his first time, of course. His whole childhood he had gotten used to not looking up. Not as his classmates cheered at the sight of their mothers picking them up from school. Not as a child when he had gotten hurt and wanted someone to comfort him like other children got when they skinned their knees. Not as his teammates turned into babies the moment they scored their first professional goals and saw their mothers in the crowds or heard their proud voices over the phones. No. Ilya had trained himself. He had gotten used to keeping his eyes fixed on what was in his hands and Ilya had always made sure there was something in his hands. A phone, a puck, tape. Something in his hands to keep him occupied so he didn’t have to listen to what he never had. In Boston it had been his gear and then his phone, texting Jane and wondering if Shane turned into the same gushy child the rest of the players in the league got the moment their mothers stepped into the locker room with skates in their hands. His rookie year, the social media girl had admitted that she had made sure her team of interns knew not to pester Ilya that weekend for content. Her name had been Eliza and she had been kind. She hadn’t made a big thing of it. Just quiet gave Ilya some peace when he’d been dreading it for weeks. Ilya had made a fool of himself eating disgusting American snacks for a video for her to make up for the thoughtful gesture. But Ilya couldn’t hide away anymore. Not now that he was in Ottawa. For one, he was the captain and that came with a certain level of expectations. He was meant to set an example. Some people didn’t know how lucky they were to have mothers who embarrassed them. For another, his new team was annoyingly perceptive of his mood. In Boston, his teammates knew when to avoid him and not push for more. Ilya never told them and no one ever asked and he’d liked it this way. But the Centaurs were a different team. They cared about him and he loved them more than he thought himself capable of loving a group of people. The Centaurs were practically vibrating with excitement as the weekend steadily approached and Ilya didn’t want to ruin it. So, he put on a smile and tried not to wince at the sharp pain bursting behind his ribs as he forced himself to watch the first wave of mothers that came through the door for the team brunch. Wyatt and Evan waved down their mothers as if they couldn’t see them from ten feet away. Nick Chouinard took his mother’s luggage while playfully teasing her about over packing. Bood picked his mother off her feet in a hug that made even Ilya’s bones ache just watching. Each of them, elite athletes in their primes who had knocked out a few teeth and had mouths that could make even him blush sometimes. But they were all just big softies at heart. Ilya tried to stay out of his own head. He played his part. He stood up and greeted every one of their guests, charming and assuring them that yes, their darling boys absolutely did not get up into any trouble at all in the hotel rooms. They were perfectly good, well behaved angels who were always in bed on time and never in threat of being arrested ever. Each and every one of them cooed and awed over him until their sons got jealous and then Ilya made his excuses to find a quiet corner to nurse his headache and the ache he couldn’t shake from his lungs that made it hard to breathe. The room was a labor of love. The conference room had a wall of windows that looked out over the skyline of Ottawa where snow was trickling from some soft grey clouds in the sky. Several round tables were draped in table clothes with the team colors. Strings of fairy lights had been wrapped around center pieces of beautiful flower arrangements of white roses and sprigs of lavender. Several of the mothers had made a stop at the mimosa bar where freshly squeezed orange juice was waiting next to bottles of champagne and garnishes of raspberries and cranberries and strawberries and pretty much any berry catering could get their hands on. Brunch was a relaxed affair with a buffet of eggs, waffles, bacon, sausage, steamed asparagus with hollandaise sauce, and more fruit arranged in the shape of a peacock. There was an entire table dedicated to chocolate sweets and cheese. Music was playing softly in the background and Harris had set up a photo booth where Ilya was sure many of the mothers would be dragging their sons after a few more mimosas.

“Okay, but I have to ask… who said it first?” Ilya tried to play it cool, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “Who said what first?” “You know,” Haas chimed in, voice teasing. “I love you.” ——> the Ottawa Centaurs debate who said 'I love you' first.

Pieces of You by ThePromptWasntThisLong (shredded_potato)
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-18
Ilya had grown up in a world where affection was currency, measured and withdrawn at will. Where love was earned through achievement, and failure was repaid with absence. Every triumph was a plea. Every mistake, a debt. Ilya had learned early that tenderness could not be trusted. And Shane, for all his easy warmth, had no idea what to do with that kind of wound. His first instinct was to fix it. To tell Ilya that he was loved, that he was safe, that he didn’t have to be afraid. He learned soon enough that words meant nothing to someone who’d been punished by them all his life.

The resemblance hit Yuna like a punch to the gut. The same honey-colored curls, though hers were styled in a gorgeous twist at the back of her head. If Yuna could see past all of the times Ilya’s nose had been broken and re-healed, she imagined it would look something like the woman’s in front of her. And those eyes - a mix of hazel and gold with tiny flecks of green if you looked close enough. Ilya must have gotten his strong jaw from his father, because this woman’s features were narrow and sharp. Stunning.
When she smiled, it looked so like Ilya’s that Yuna could have cried.
“Irina,” she said.
“Yuna,” Irina said, bowing her head politely.
