  2. They lie in silence for a few moments, the only sound being the steady and slow beating of Shane’s heart on the monitor. He’s perfectly content to just bask in Ilya’s presence and form until the doctor comes back, but eventually, he can feel Ilya staring at him. So he opens his eyes and sees an expectant look on his husband’s face.

    “What?” Shane questions.

“Are we going to talk about it?”

Shane’s brows draw down in confusion. “Talk about what?”

A mischievous grin splits Ilya’s face. “That I am your emergency contact.”

“Oh, my god,” Shane groans. “You are not going to make this a thing. It’s not a big deal.”

    __

Or, hockey injuries are temporary. But having Ilya Rozanov as your emergency contact is forever.

  3. “Do story time, pease” Irina says with a sleepy pout, and Shane could hear Jackie’s soft “aww”. He smiles as he watches Ilya’s gaze soften, staring at his daughter for a moment before nodding once. ‘Story time’ referred to Irina’s nightly bedtime story; she usually needed at least 2 books read with the occasional scene getting acted out before she could fall asleep. Hayden is usually the only other person Irina allows to do story time, enjoying how he changes his voice for each character, so Shane knows this is a big deal. “Once again I am betrayed” Hayden grumbles and Shane pats his shoulder in sympathy before walking down the corridor. He hears Ilya following him and can’t help the fluttering in his chest. Shane and Irina’s lives were never going to be the same again. He can’t remember the last time he was this happy. - How the rest of the night went when Ilya and Shane reunited after 5 years.

When his parents asked him what was wrong, he simply replied that he was tired, because how could he tell the men who gave him life that he didn't want it anymore? In other words, Ilya's worst nightmare is coming true. Sometimes he wished that depression wasn't hereditary.

  6. It was a start, Shane knew that. And no matter what happened, he’d help Ilya. Always, as promised forever. They were going to win a hundred more Stanleys, retire, have children, and grow old together. The soil was damp, cold, and suffocating as the other digs into the earth with bare hands, with a single-minded intensity to free each ragged and stifled breath from the clutches of the loam. And with a new dawning of the sun, Ilya would find himself feeling its rays. Tonight wasn’t a good night, but tomorrow was a new day. ; 5 tells and signs Ilya is going through a depressive episode, and the ways Shane tries to help him through it.

  7. “Shane takes a deep breath and flexes his fingers in the fabric of the hoodie as he tries to find the words, tries to be brave to ask for what he wants. He’s pretty sure Ilya would try to give him the world, would give him the last breath out of his lungs if he asked. And honestly? He’s not sure whether that makes this any easier. He’s used to struggling in silence—they both are—and he’s had to learn how to ask, how to make his wants and needs known. And, today, what Shane wants is to be taken out of his head for a little bit.” Shane’s been having a stressful season. Ilya knows just how to get Shane feeling better.

  9. Shane had researched many flowers and plants that were native to Russia, and he had settled on two different ones, the fern leaf peony, and chamomile, which is Russia's national flower. He had placed the peony root, and chamomile seeds carefully into a shoebox on the passenger seat next to him, as he drove in silence. He thought that maybe he was doing too much, that he was overstepping. But he would have to wait until the summer to find out.

  12. Shane remembers Ilya telling him once that hell is the suffering of being unable to love anymore, and Shane hadn’t understood that then. He couldn’t imagine being unable to love, because they were freshly married and blindingly happy and there was no force in the world that could take it away. But Shane thinks he gets it now, as he thinks about that grey December afternoon and beautiful blond boy in a toque with no one to love and no one to love him. That’s hell, he thinks. That’s hell, and he can barely speak around the swell of emotion in his throat, around the grief he feels at having held Ilya’s young hand for only a moment, for how he can never go back and hold him like he deserves to be held. They’re out - they’ve been out - and Shane can hardly stand it sometimes, how fucking good it feels to see Ilya enter a crowded room and meet his eyes and not feel that cold shock of terror zip down his spine. How plainly he can show love on his face after a decade of closed doors and frantic, not-enough stolen moments and being too terrified to let even his phone know he loves Ilya Rozanov. How he can reach out and tangle fingers with the love of his life and this new world they live in doesn’t try to cave in, or make them leave it, or make them leave each other. It drives him out of his mind daily, thinking about the life they lived together - apart, too fucking apart - for nearly ten years. Sometimes he looks at the slope of Ilya’s shoulders peeking out of a dark cotton tank top on their couch or the point of his toes tapping Shane’s across the space between their chairs or the soft swirl of golden curls darkened in the shower they designed together. Sometimes he looks at those things and his chest wells so full of love he feels like he might burst. Sometimes he looks at those things and feels like he might burst, yeah, but it’s not what drives him crazy. What drives him crazy is the memory of baby-rounded cheeks outside a rink in the prairies in 2008, in the dead of a bitterly cold winter, his first look at the face that would wallpaper his twenties, his whole life. Pinked by the wind, softened by youth, eyes sharp with interest but not familiarity, not yet. Eyes so icy grey they could have been carved from the pavement beneath their feet. A cigarette dangling from lips Shane hasn’t felt yet, but thinks about for months after. It’s the cheeks, though, when he really considers it. Ilya’s eyes are the same, still that same ice-cold grey, but softened around the edges by love and warmth and being loved. His lips are the same too, still full and pink, and they still stick in Shane’s mind like a very lovely thorn, all these years later. The cheeks, though. Soft and round, like a child on the brink of manhood, pink from the wind and maybe a blush - although Shane knows, he’s heard it a thousand times, Russians do not blush, even though Shane’s seen it happen a hundred different ways. They’re different now, sharper and angled in a way that makes air stick in Shane’s chest every time the light catches Ilya’s perfect cheekbones just so. Shane knows the world looks at Ilya Rozanov, a study in curls and cheekbones and mouthwatering iliac furrows, and sees someone dangerous and hot. Shane looks and sees a mouth softened with warmth, a divot between pecs that holds the dangling gold remnants of the only other soul who ever loved Ilya more than Shane does now. He sees a scar low on a golden stomach where doctors took Ilya’s appendix three years ago while Shane waited alone and terrified in Ilya’s Boston penthouse, feeling like a bird in a cage he built for himself. He sees calloused feet, scarred and blistered and worth millions of dollars. And he sees those cheeks. Shane’s life is a montage, or a flipbook of all his greatest hits, all still life images of Ilya Rozanov’s beautiful face growing thinner and stronger and sharper with age right before Shane’s eyes. It drives him crazy. Sometimes he thinks he’s at peace with it all, the years that passed them by and the youth and time and fear they wasted. He doesn’t feel old, really. They’re both thirty-one, they both have many years of hockey and their life together ahead of them. But he thinks about those soft cheeks on Ilya’s seventeen year old face and he knows he will never forgive himself for the years he spent looking at Ilya as anything but the other half of his soul. What he wouldn’t give to go back, to stretch his hand out to the beautiful, pink-faced boy lighting a cigarette against the chill of a Saskatchewan wind in December and tell him he loves him. Too many years passed between that moment and their tearful, overdue profession of love at the cottage. Too many years where it was true and unsaid and only thought about with panic, or denial, or the desire for it to stop. Years ago, a gentle soul stood in the cold with no one to love him, and Shane didn’t fix it for far too long. It drives him crazy. It keeps him up at night, often, just like it does tonight. The house is dark, and Ilya is asleep beside him in their bed, one they’ve shared every single night for a year now - thank god, thank anyone, thank everyone - and Shane watches him like he still can’t believe it. He can’t, not in moments like this when Ilya is still and peaceful and relaxed in a way that makes Shane’s chest ache with love. It feels like a cosmic joke that Shane has ended up here, loved and in love, with someone who eases every ache that’s ever settled itself in his mind, heart, and body. He doesn’t feel special enough for a gift like this - he’s already been given

  13. Those small moments. Moments in daily life that seem mundane remind Ilya of his past, I stare at the house you were brought up in All the photographs and door frames are wooden I wish I'd known you when you were younger Before lovers 'Cause I've changed my accent And I gave a false name I hope I throw a party In a house of my own someday When you were a kid You'd come in through the back gate Your folks left a light on In case you get home late would like to formally apologise for the emotional distress I have caused with this fic,

Basically: Ilya gets concussed and the hospital calls Shane (who didn’t know that Ilya had put him down as his emergency contact) and who immediately races to Boston. (This is set during the hockey season after the last episode. They have come out to Shane’s parents and are ‘officially’ boyfriends, but Shane still plays for the Metros and Ilya still plays for Boston.)

  15. Shane has many routines. He has never hidden the fact that he treats his body like a temple; he's often seen sipping a green vitamin drink or practicing yoga. But his skin care routine is Ilya's favorite. Ilya finds it fascinating when his husband puts on a headband and applies countless creams. One day, inspired, Ilya decides to buy more headbands as a gift for Shane, and a new ritual is born: their couple's skin care routine. "You've turned me into a bore, Shane Hollander-Rozanov," he joked. "You love being boring, Ilya Hollander-Rozanov," Shane countered. "Wrong, I love you. Ya nye magú jêty bes tyebyá.” Ilya said quietly in Russian. As if it were something only Shane could hear. Ilya had few certainties in life, but this was one of them. He wouldn't live without Shane. After all, Shane is your heart, and you can't live without one. “Ya nye magú jêty bes tyebyá.”, with a heavy accent, Shane repeated what Ilya had said. Word for word engraved in his heart.

  16. Yesterday while scrolling Twitter, I found a post from @R0ZAN0V saying: “one time when ilya pisses shane off, he gives an interview while wearing the glasses, knowing that ilya is watching him on the tv from home.” I saw that tweet, got to work, and started writing this fic. OR ilya thousands of miles away from home, pisses Shane off over something silly. Shane retaliates by wearing those special glasses for his interview that night, knowing Ilya's watching him where he is, going absolutely feral. So liya did what any rational, sleep-deprived, jealousy-fueled man would do, seeing his fiancé thirsted over across social media. He made fake accounts.

  17. “You can’t die first.” “What?!” “You can’t,” Ilya rasps, “I can’t.” “Ilya..” “I buried my mom,” he coughs a little, body rattles—it hurts, “..then, my dad. 18. Shane grabs the mugs off the counter, his steps careful and measured to not spill as he makes his way outside. The outdoor air hits him hard, filling his lungs with the fresh breath of the trees, the lake, and the absence of his anxiety. He doesn't need it out here. Sitting on the dock, down the hill, exactly where Shane left him, is Ilya. He almost cannot see him in the glittering evening light– his silhouette outlined by the tendrils of the lingering sun. Shane steps forward, and lets the light guide him home. or– Shane finds his peace.

Three years of marriage, a Stanley Cup, a dog, and endless playful banter prove that love isn’t just on the ice—it’s everywhere they are.
