  2. Wyatt lightly punches him in the shoulder, and Ilya opens one eye to see Wyatt holding out his phone towards Ilya’s face.

Ilya’s eyes grow wide, a sick feeling settling in his stomach.

The match barely ended two hours ago, and already, there’s an article questioning if Shane had tripped on purpose. If Shane had tripped to let Ilya win.

Ilya’s initial reaction is that of extreme insult. As if he needed Shane Hollander to let him win.

    But then…fuck. Shane.

Ilya stands up suddenly and crawls over Wyatt (and steps on his feet none too gently in the process). He strides as fast as he can to the front of the bus towards Coach Wiebe.

He leans down and murmurs to his coach, and gets a look of complete understanding.

“As soon as we get to the airport, go,” Wiebe says. “We’ll see you in the morning.”

    --

Or after Shane trips during that fateful game, Ilya refuses to let him face the aftermath alone.

  4. “So beautiful, sweetheart,” Ilya whispered as he ran his fingers over the skin on Shane’s thigh. Making sure every single individual mark got enough attention. “You work so hard for this body, you should be proud of it.” Ilya left dozens of kisses on just one thigh, his thumb rubbing over the sensitive spots just after. “Should want to show off to the world,” Ilya breathed out, “But you won’t right? Because just for me. Just for me to see?” “Just yours, Ilya,” Shane gasped out, his breathing was heavy. Ilya knew how much he was enjoying this even with such little words. or the fic where Ilya praises every inch of Shane's body

  8. Just a little Holiday Hollanov to take the edge off. Shane and Ilya turn a wholesome Christmas activity into a very serious competition because they are adorable. --- “What are you getting?” Ilya asked. “I bought everything we need to do this!” Shane came back with a ruler in hand before sitting down to start studying the instructions on the back of one of the gingerbread kit boxes. “Oh my god, Hollander, you are so boring.” Ilya said, the grin on his face betraying his attempt at an exasperated tone. “Is cookies and candy. For fun. We do not need to measure.” Ottawa - December “We are building gingerbread houses tonight.” Shane Hollander looked up from the couch where he was lying with their dog Anya sprawled against his chest. “What? Why?” “Because I saw children making them on TikTok,” his husband, Ilya Rozanov responded, haphazardly dumping grocery bags full of gingerbread kits, icing, and candy out onto the dining table while humming Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ under his breath. Shane sat up gently, trying not to disturb Anya, who was still snuggling into his warmth, one ear pointed in the direction of the noise coming from the dining room. “We aren’t children.” “No,” Ilya agreed gravely. “We are better.” Shane squinted. “Are you trying to compete with kids?” “I am competing with you,” Ilya corrected. Shane smirked and finally got up from the couch to head toward the mountain of supplies that now took up their entire table, Anya trotting happily behind him. This was the first year in their entire relationship that they would get the full holiday season together. The NHL always gave them a few days off around Christmas, but it was just enough to rest and recover from months of travel, muscle aches, and getting slammed into boards and ice for a living. They still had games to play but now that they were on the same team, they got to spend all of December together. Really, they got every day and every night of the year together, which still felt like a dream after so many years of only seeing each other a handful of times during the regular season. Ilya didn’t used to care much about Christmas, happy to spend a night cooking and eating a festive meal with Shane’s parents, but this year he had decided to truly get in the spirit. Apparently starting with making a giant, sticky mess on their beautiful dining table. “You know, those kids probably had adult supervision,” Shane said. “Who’s going to supervise you while I’m busy building my masterpiece?” “That is why we have Anya, world’s best dog!” Ilya said, getting on his knees to scratch her behind her ears and kissing her on the soft fur between her eyes. Shane sighed and bent down to join their cuddle fest. “I love you, but this is going to be a disaster.” “For you, maybe,” Ilya grinned. Shane stood back up and headed toward the kitchen. “What are you getting?” Ilya asked. For fun. We do not need to measure.” “I want mine to stay up!” Shane explained. “Then I can have fun adding cool details once I have a perfect foundation.” Choosing to ignore the overly amused look Ilya was burning into the top of his head, Shane got to work precisely laying out cookies and carefully securing them with thin lines of icing. Just enough to ensure stability, but not so much that the icing wouldn’t dry in time. He thought it actually looked pretty good! He wanted to start adding some candy, maybe some peppermints or blue M&M’s, or it looked like Ilya had gotten some pretty cool candy that looked like snowflakes. Gummies seemed gross to add, so he planned to avoid those. Did it matter? Do people even eat their gingerbread houses or are they just for deco- His thoughts were interrupted by Ilya loudly munching on gingerbread. “Ilya! Why are you eating the roof tiles, you need those!” Shane cried out, horrified. “I am testing structural integrity,” Ilya said, still chewing. “I think it failed the test,” Shane deadpanned, gesturing to what was left of the integral roof piece. Ilya waved him off. “I will improvise. I never had these exact cookies before; they taste a bit like ones we had growing up called pryaniki.” Shane smiled at him, momentarily setting aside his very genuine concern for Ilya’s gingerbread house. Ilya didn’t talk about Russia a lot but Shane loved any glimpse into where Ilya came from. The good and the bad. “Maybe we could try making those together this week.” Ilya grinned back. “Yes, a new cookie activity for every day of the month.” “So… just ignoring the directions, then?” Shane asked, raising one eyebrow as Ilya took another bite of roof cookie. “I do not follow directions,” Ilya said, grabbing a handful of gumdrops and popping one into his mouth seductively. “I follow instincts.” “Your instincts are made of sugar.” “Yes.” They decided they would give themselves one more hour to finish up before judgment time. Shane took a look at his final product.

  9. They had so many years of love and joy, so many tender, vulnerable moments that they were never allowed to capture - never allowed to keep. “We don’t have any pictures together, Ilya,” Shane repeats, his voice frantic and desperate and almost pleading. “We’ve loved each other for a decade and all we have to show for it is-“ “-us, Shane. We have us to show for it. Our life, our love, our home that we have built together.”

  10. “Ilya,” he whispers. “I want this. I want to know when you’re hurting and when things are hard, because I want you. I want you when you’re sad, and lonely, and messy-“

“-you hate mess,” Ilya teases, drawing a hard-earned smile out of Shane.

    “But I love you.”

Ilya’s answering laugh ghosts against Shane’s cheek. “I’m right here.” “Not close enough.” Shane’s fingers curl at the nape of his neck, tugging him down until their foreheads meet. 12. “My - it’s my,” Shane pants, his hand flapping like Ilya’s sometimes does when he’s searching for an English translation that he can’t quite remember. Shane’s heart squeezes painfully. “He’s-“ He wants to say my boyfriend is on that plane. He wants to cry, and throw things, and scream the love of my life might be dying while we stand here. But he doesn’t. He can’t. His voice can’t find the words, can’t find the strength to speak, and even if he could - would he? Would Shane tell the whole world that for him, it has always been Ilya? Will only ever be Ilya? (Or, the plane scene in The Long Game goes a little differently.)

  14. If you would have told Shane ten years ago that Ilya Rozanov would be cooking him his birthday breakfast that they ate outside on the porch of their shared house with their dog running around the backyard, Shane would have laughed out loud. 15. Ilya let himself soften into it. He’d missed this, the simple camaraderie between teammates. He did feel lonely, but in some ways he felt safer with this team, and Shane had given him that, it was because of Shane that he moved to Ottawa. All the good things in his life curved back to Shane. Looking around, he tried to imagine him here, not Shane Hollander the hockey player, but his Shane, the man who made the darkest rooms feel like home. He felt suddenly certain that they would welcome him with love and respect. And, God help him, he was still hoping like an idiot that Shane would walk through the door. Ilya tightened his grip on his roasting stick, jaw set, trying to divert his thoughts back to the present, when a ripple went through the group. Conversation dipped, then stopped completely. “Um… what the fuck,” Dillon muttered, eyes flicking toward the house. “Is that Shane Hollander?” Or Shane decides to go get his man after seeing Ilya’s instagram post in Chap.23 of TLG.

  17. “That’s wild, man. That is just weird.” Yannic paused. “You really think someone speaks Russian but is hiding it from you and just using it to do nice things for you?”

“Well, that is the question. Why would anyone do that? Why not just say they speak Russian?” Rodion had been wondering this all morning.

    … … … …

A side story wherein Shane accidentally reveals that he speaks Russian while still playing for Montreal, which results in a cat and mouse game with a minor leaguer.

  19. “We both know you love to be rewarded for being good and working hard,” Ilya tenderly stroked the side of Shane’s neck with his thumb. “But when you make a mistake, I think you would maybe like a little bit of punishment.” He squeezed again on the word “punishment,” tighter, tight enough to make Shane’s breath hitch.

Shane has a penalty box installed in his home practice rink at the cottage, and it inspires some new feelings in Ilya.
