During a high-stakes game between their teams, everything changes when Shane takes a brutal hit and goes down hard, blood staining the ice. The arena falls into stunned silence as trainers rush forward and fans hold their breath. All eyes turn to Ilya. The question hangs heavy in the air, unspoken but undeniable: How does a rival react when the man he loves is lying broken on the ice? The arena shook with thunderous energy. Thousands of fans dressed in rival colors waved signs, shouted chants, and slammed their palms against the boards. It was a spectacle every time the two teams met, but tonight felt charged—dangerous, electric. Shane Hollander skated warmup laps, feeling the weight of all those eyes. Cameras followed him as usual; he was the league’s golden boy, the face of his franchise. A clean-cut hero. The perfect foil to Ilya Rozanov. Shane allowed himself one quick glance toward the other end of the rink. Ilya was stretching near the blue line, long legs and broad shoulders outlined in his dark away jersey. He looked like a storm contained within a man—intense, focused, carved from granite. Everyone saw rivals. Polar opposites. Enemies destined to clash. No one saw the truth. The hands tangled beneath blankets. The whispered confessions in Russian and English. The quiet mornings in Ilya’s apartment, sunlight spilling across intertwined legs. The soft kisses before they split for practice, pretending they weren’t choosing love over the expectations of an entire league. Shane dragged his gaze away as the whistle blew. He couldn’t afford to get lost in thoughts of Ilya—not when they were minutes from going head-to-head. Not when every camera zoomed in for the slightest hint of tension. But his chest tightened with something warm and painful. Tonight, they’d have to pretend they didn’t matter to each other. Midway through the second period, Shane felt good—sharp. His skates cut through the ice like they were part of him. He took a pass, dodged a defender, then stole the puck right off a stick. The crowd roared, vibrating through his bones. Ilya was on the ice too, shadowing him from a distance that would look normal to anyone else. But Shane recognized it—the protective tether Ilya couldn’t fight, even in a rivalry game. Shane accelerated along the boards, eyes locked on the net. He had a lane. One beautiful, narrow lane. Then he never saw the defender coming. A massive body slammed into his blindside. Shane was lifted off his feet, crashing into the boards so hard the impact rattled his teeth. His helmet snapped back. Pain exploded behind his eye. His breath vanished. The world tilted. The puck slid away as Shane crumpled, his cheek hitting the ice, coldness searing his skin. A metallic taste filled his mouth. He lifted his hand, blinking at the smear of red on his glove. Blood. He heard the crowd gasp. Distant shouting. The shrill whistle of the refs. But it all sounded muffled, underwater. Then he heard something else. A roar—angry, feral, unmistakable. Ilya. Ilya Rozanov was already moving before any whistle blew. His eyes widened the instant Shane hit the ice—an expression so raw, so terrified, that his teammate beside him startled. But Ilya wasn’t afraid of losing momentum. He was afraid of losing Shane. He threw his gloves down so violently they slid across the rink. The defenseman who delivered the hit barely had time to straighten before Ilya collided with him like a freight train. “What the—Rozanov!” the player barked, raising his hands. Too late. Ilya’s fist slammed into his jaw with a crack that echoed. He grabbed the man’s jersey, hauling him down, yelling in a mix of Russian curses and English threats. His fist rose again — Two teammates tried to drag him away. He elbowed one in the ribs and threw the other off with a growl, all restraint gone. More players poured in. Sticks flew. Helmets toppled. Punches landed in a frenzy. A full-team brawl erupted—one massive, chaotic explosion across the ice. The crowd rose to their feet, torn between horror and exhilaration. But Ilya saw none of that. His gaze kept darting toward Shane’s motionless body. His chest heaved. Panic twisted his face in a way no broadcast replay could quite capture. He wasn’t fighting to win. He was fighting because someone had hurt the man he loved. And if someone was going to pay for it, it wouldn’t be Shane.

“You don’t like cars or clubs or women but you saw my documentary where there is only that?” “I mean… yes,” Shane shrugged, feigning nonchalance. He was the very opposite of nonchalant about possibly everything in life. “I don’t like cars or clubs, but I like you.” There, he said it. He liked Ilya Rozanov. OR: Shane decides to stay after Ilya makes his famous tuna melts. Life ensues.

Babes in Hockey Land by anarchybeauty
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Leah and Max invited Shane and Ilya on their podcast to get the juicy details now that they're out. Contains spoilers for The Long Game! I saw this prompt from Tnw99404 and lined up with something that I thought would happen when I was reading The Long Game (I thought they might come out on ESPN, talking about their relationship and the homophobia they faced) - Shane wants the focus to be on hockey, not their relationship, and he’s tired of fielding questions about it every game. Ilya gets it; it was a bit of a shock to the league. So they agree to do one low-key, honest interview, no glossy magazine spreads, no dramatic photoshoots, just a casual, tell-all conversation to get everything out there so people will finally stop asking. They choose their friends from camp, Leah and Max, who run a small but beloved hockey podcast. Transcript of episode 236 of Babes in Hockey Land: Ilya: -so then I- Shane: Ilya! They're recording! Leah: Good morning, afternoon, or evening to all of you in Hockey Land! By popular demand, we have professional hockey's it couple, Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander! Max: Thanks for being here, guys! Shane: No problem, it's always a pleasure to see you both. Max: We're pretty lucky to have you here, it seems like everyone is talking about you two coming out as a couple. Ilya: Yes, because we're the most beautiful couple. Shane: Ilya! Ilya: What? Is true. Leah: You guys are adorable and also so gross. Max: But I think everyone wants to know how did it happen? You've been famously rivals ever since you were signed, maybe even since your junior hockey days. Shane (hushed): Ilya, how much are we revealing? Ilya: Everything. Shane: We met at World Juniors but - Ilya: I wanted to jump on him right away, but I waited until after we were both signed. Shane: You waited? Leah: Wait, wait, wait - when exactly? Shane: The summer before our first seasons. Max: Holy shit! Seriously? Shane: It wasn't what you think! Actually, maybe it is. Leah: I want details but - Shane: Well, um, we saw each other at a commercial shoot, do you remember the one where we’re facing off, for CCM? Max: Oh yes, very well. I remember my friends and I would yell “Kiss!” At the TV when it was on. Leah: What happened? Ilya: Shane couldn’t contain himself in the shower afterwards- Shane: Motherfucker, I’m not the one who - Ilya: Oh you loved it, sweetheart. After that, we met sometimes to have sex. Max: Like fuck buddies? Shane: Yeah, I guess that’s the best way to say it. Max: Anything memorable about that time you’d like to share? Shane: Um… Ilya: Should I tell everyone about the night I won MVP and we went to my penthouse…? Shane: Don’t you dare! Leah: And this went on for - ? Shane: Years. Until - Ilya: You fell in love with me. Shane: Shut up, you fell in love with me too, asshole. Ilya: Hey, I'm handsome and very good at sex, and you are - Shane: So it was right around when I dated Rose Landry that things seem to change between us. Leah: Do I sense that there was some jealousy? Ilya: What?! No! Ok, a little. Shane: Well, that was when I knew I was gay and also in love with Ilya. Ilya: Aw, you love me! Shane: Shut up! You know we're married, right? Ilya: Yes, but I also know that we haven't really talked publicly about it yet. Max: Hear that! That's an exclusive! Leah: Ok, ok, let's get back to you realizing you're in love with your arch rival. Ilya: That was a strange time for both of us. Rose Landry, my father died, but it was when you get hurt, I knew I needed to have you as mine. Shane: I think it was when Scott Hunter came out, that changed things. We spent the summer together and made plans to really be together and plan a future. Max: And you're married now. Ilya: Yes, for citizenship of course. Shane: Oh shut up, you love me, and we have a dumb little dog and run the Irina Foundation together. It's hard to believe that the guy I found smoking outside an arena in Saskatchewan would be the love of my life and - Ilya: Oh Hollander, so sentimental. Shane: Shut up Rozanov (laughter) Leah: Speaking of sentimental, what's your favourite moment you can share? Shane: Well, hmmm... Ilya: That day at the cottage, when your father walked in while we were making out. Shane: Yeah, that was a good one. I wasn't out to my parents' yet, and um... my father walked in while we were kissing. So I came out to my parents and introduced them to my boyfriend, and my parents were so wonderful about it. It felt like the first day of the rest of our lives. Ilya: Yes, all that then we had very hot sex. Shane: Yes, we did. Max: So to get a bit serious, have you met any backlash? Shane: (sigh) Yes. That was why I decided to leave Montreal. That hurt a lot. Leah: I can only imagine. Shane: I got a lot of heat from management. After the video that Hayden posted went out, I was told not to issue a statement, my teammates were cold. It was all the things I was scared of about coming out. Ilya: My teammates were good. Very happy for me, but Crowell... Shane: (sigh) Yeah, Crowell. When he heard the rumour that I was gay, he called me into his office to warn me not to come out publicly. Max: I want to say I'm surprised but I'm not. Ilya: Yes, there’s a day we babysat for Hayden, and afterward, I thought maybe we could tell everyone and it wouldn’t be a problem, but then Crowell talked to Shane and scared him all

“Ilya,” He spoke the second he knew his words would be heard, eager to get the burning question out, “Are you alright?” There was a pause, a concerning one, before Ilya simply hummed, “Fine.” But that wasn’t enough. Shane knew, could tell by the glaze over his eyes, his delayed, unfocused mannerisms. Play should be stopped. Ilya was clearly concussed.

The sickening crack in his shoulder should have been concerning, but the way his stomach lurched and his head spun was all he could focus on. Ilya Rozanov is the thorn in Shane's side. He's rude, cocky, stressfully perceptive, and his stats are the only ones better than Shane's in the whole OUA. Even worse, they play on the same team, and the only person who might beat Shane out for the C next year is Rozanov. Ilya and Shane are so at odds they can't even manage to complete a stupid challenge at Playoff Camp without making fools of themselves and, according to Hazy, getting cursed. It's frustrating and embarrassing, until it becomes clear that the curse is very very real and it becomes horrifying instead. For the next six weeks (at least) Shane is stuck by Ilya's side, unable to go more than a few feet away without unbearable pain. Now, they somehow have to pull off going to class, winning the playoffs, and not killing each other, not to mention keeping their secret from their friends and teammates. Shane is so fucked.
