J.J., on the other hand, is trying to bleach the image of his sweet captain making out with Ilya fucking Rozanov from his brain.

"What are we going to do?" Shane whispered. "I will tell them it was me." Rozanov said, interrupting them both. "You would do that for Shane?" David asked. "Is only way." "Ilya, don't be stupid." "Tell me other way then, Hollander." Shane's eyes went glassy again. "But - you won't be able to go home. Russia. It won't be safe for you-" Hayden exchanged a look with J.J. "God, you're such a fucking asshole," Shane said, but his breathing was beginning to even out. "You love it." Rozanov's voice filtered through the phone. A pause. "You feel better now?" "Yeah... thanks," "Good. Listen to me properly, Hollander. Scott Hunter doesn't know shit about us. And if he does, why has he noticed it, hmm? Think about that." Shane let out another laugh, almost hysterical sounding. "You can't seriously be suggesting that Scott Hunter is gay? You're fucking crazy, Roz." Oh my God. The pieces clicked together. Suddenly, she shot up as a thought occured to her. He’d gone to Shane’s to get washer tablets. The blushing. “Did Shane have someone at the cottage?” “Um. I don’t know how to say this really, but it was- um. It was that Ilya Rozanov. Um-“ She shot up off the sofa. “What?” “Look, I don’t know any more than you now. I just went in to get the washer tablets but I couldn’t find him so I went out back, you know, I thought he might be doing yoga or something-“ “And?” “And, well. He wasn’t alone. He was with that hockey player, Rozanov. Kissing.” “ ‘That hockey player?’ ” She repeated the words back to him. “You mean the boy our son has been competing with for almost a decade? That he’s supposedly hated for a decade? Hell, I’ve hated that boy for a decade! I mean, what the-“ (yuna’s pov of finding out about shane & ilya’s relationship) Yuna Hollander could admit that maybe she wasn’t the calmest or most relaxed person. She got too way to into games of Yahztee, was obsessive about hockey in a way that most people didn’t understand, and was generally an intense person about most things in her life. She never did anything by halves. That was why David was so good for her. He was the calmest, quiet balance to her obsessive, intense nature. So, when she heard the car pull up into the drive, the door slam, and running footsteps storming into the house, she was more than a little alarmed. “David, what-“ He burst into the room, panting for breath. His eyes were wide and shocked. Immediately, terrible thoughts flooded her brain of Shane injured; seeing her usually calm husband in such a state had her worst fears coming to the surface. And it hadn't been all that long ago since Shane had been in hospital; she was still a little on edge. When he didn't respond, she pressed him. “David, what is it?” He opened his mouth, flushed bright red and then closed it again. “David, please, you’re kind of worrying me,” David saw her panic and pulled her towards him. “No, no, it’s nothing bad. Shane is fine-“ Relief flooded through her and she shoved him lightly. “God, don’t scare me like that!” “Sorry, Yuna,” She pushed away from him, returning to the sofa where she’d been watching the pundits break down a Voyagers game from last season. “Well, what is it, then?” She couldn’t imagine what on earth had the usually unshakeable man so flustered. Suddenly, she shot up as a thought occurred to her. He’d gone to Shane’s to get washer tablets. The blushing. “Did Shane have someone at the cottage?” David went tomato red. “You could say that.” Yuna gasped. It had been so long since Shane had dated anyone. Rose had been almost a year ago. She’d not heard of anyone since, and both her and David had discussed the chances of Shane being gay because of his lack of said love life. “Okay, tell me more!” “Um. I don’t know how to say this really, but it was- um. It was that Ilya Rozanov. Um-“ She shot up off the sofa. “What?” “I know, Jesus-“ David collapsed into the nearest chair and put his hands in his face. “What has Shane gotten himself into?” “What?” All she could do was repeat herself. “Look, I don’t know any more than you now. I just went in to get the washer tablets but I couldn’t find him so I went out back, you know, I thought he might be doing yoga or something-“ “And?” “And, well - he wasn’t alone. I mean, what the-“ Her tirade was interrupted by the sound of another car pulling into the drive. “Shit! Do you think that’s Shane?” She ran to the window frantically. She spotted Shane’s car immediately, and could see Shane sat in the drivers seat next to fucking Rozanov. “Oh my God, Rozanov’s with him.” “Yuna, calm down. Come, sit down. We have to be supportive,” “Do not tell me to calm down when Shane’s been doing God knows what with Rozanov-“ The name was like dirt in her mouth. A moment later, the door opened and a voice rang out. “Hello? It’s me…Shane.” A second later and their son walked into the room like he was about to face the firing squad. Yuna’s heart wrenched at the plain fear on her son’s face. Then, a second later and Ilya Rozanov followed behind her son and came into the room. “Shane?” Ilya Rozanov was in her living room. It was surreal. Shane cleared his throat, his eyes flickering nervously between the two of them. “Mom. Dad. I- I think we should talk.” A snarky comment about how that was possibly the understatement of the year rose in her throat but she bit it back. “We forgot to buy dishwasher tablets. I just wanted to know if I could borrow some. I didn’t know you had… company.” At the last word, David’s eyes shifted to Rozanov, as if he too could also not believe this man was in their house. With Shane. “Dad, it’s okay. I’m sorry. You… shouldn’t have found out that way.”

  8. Shane is at a sports bar in Tampa when people at his table start talking shit about Ilya. It becomes impossible to keep his mouth shut. Or, an alternative retelling of how Hayden finds out. Shane never really got the point of going out after a game, and he certainly didn’t understand going out with players from the opposing team. Still, he somehow found himself at some sports bar in Tampa, seated around a table with Hayden, J.J., and what felt like half of Tampa Thunder. It was actually just three of them, one of whom J.J. knew from junior hockey. Or something. “—and I swear we just got her to sleep through the night.” Brandon Wheeler, one of the Tampa players, rubbed a hand over his face. “And then suddenly she just started waking up again at 5 A.M.” Hayden winced. “That time’s really rough. Have you tried a white noise machine?” “Darla’s sister keeps suggesting it, so I guess we should.” Shane tried hard to keep a polite expression on his face. Sitting in a sports bar in Tampa talking about babies wasn’t really his idea of a good time. His idea of a good time was to go to the hotel and nap. Or FaceTime Ilya, but Ilya was occupied at the moment. Shane’s eyes flicked unbidden to the game on the TV. The Centaurs were playing at home against the Admirals and, by some miracle, they had yet to concede a goal. They hadn’t scored one either, but they weren’t losing. Ilya popped up in frame, mouthing off to Scott Hunter who rolled his eyes at him, and by now Shane was familiar enough with this dynamic to bite back a laugh. He watched his boyfriend on the screen, surrounded by people who had no idea. He wasn’t the only one watching the game, though, and one of the other Tampa players scoffed loudly. Andy Something-or-other. “Rozanov is such a fucking scumbag,” he spat, turning away from the game again. “I hate playing against that guy, he pisses me off.” J.J. snorted into his beer. “Is there anyone Rozanov doesn’t piss off?” Feeling his shoulders tense, Shane forced himself to reach out for his ginger ale and take a slow sip. It wasn’t the first time he’d found himself roped into similar conversations, but it was his absolute least favorite situation to be in. He hated hearing people who knew nothing about Ilya tear him to pieces. It was one thing when people said bad things about Shane, but there was something so fucked up about listening to people dig into the person he loved most in the world. “Oh, yeah, I guess you’d know better than anyone,” Brandon said, gesturing at Shane with a laugh. “That guy’s been in your face being annoying for years. Don’t know how you haven’t punched the daylights out of him.” Shane just shrugged, not finding it in him to agree with it. A few years ago, he’d have played along a little, just half-hearted insults and laughs, but he was fed up with all of it. “Shane’s a saint,” Hayden said, clapping him on the shoulder. “He wouldn’t punch the worst person you could think of, probably.” Shane rather wanted to punch Andy, actually. There was something about his face. Of course, Ilya Rozanov had impeccable timing and chose that moment to score. Shane sucked in a breath because it was a fucking cool one too, and he watched as Ilya pumped his arms over his head, skated over and crowed in Scott’s face before being engulfed by his team. They zoomed in his beaming face and Shane had to press his lips together to not smile along with him. Everyone else around the table groaned and the goal with the ensuing celebration added fuel to the fire. “I hear he’s honestly fucking disgusting,” Andy said. “Has like three women going and none of them know they’re the sidepiece.” Shane should honestly just laugh. Because it was so obviously stupid and made up shit. But he didn’t want to laugh. He actually kind of wanted to cry because it was so unfair. If they were out, they wouldn’t be saying this. If they were out, he could defend Ilya freely. In the back of his head, he knew they would just say something else. Would say he was cheating on Shane, probably. And still, the anger was building inside him. Brandon nodded at his teammate. “It’s people like him that give the rest of us a bad reputation. Everyone assuming we all cheat on our wives, like we’re all complete animals.” “Yeah, fuck, it’s so annoying,” Hayden said. “I get that shit all the time.” The third Tampa player finally chimed in as Shane was quietly planning his escape. “Probably has a bunch of kids everywhere. They’ll be their own hockey team in like 20 years.” Everyone else laughed at that. Obnoxiously loudly, like it was the funniest thing any of them had ever heard. Something snapped in him, something he’d been holding together with the force of his will and the clench of his teeth. Maybe it was the implication that Ilya would be a shitty dad that finally broke every single resolve. “He’s actually a good guy,” Shane said quietly, but the whole table fell silent for a moment. J.J. looked at him with his eyebrows raised, and the Tampa players still had signs of laughter in their expressions. “You’ve been enemies for like a decade,” Brandon said. “What do you mean, good guy?” “Rivals,” Shane corrected, his hands twisting in his lap. “And yeah, almost a decade. So I know him better than you, then, don’t I? And Rozanov isn’t just whatever you see on the ice or hear from the rumour mill.” “Alright, relax?” Brandon laughed, dismissive.

  9. The crowd was intense tonight. There was a push and pull that added to the thrumming feeling under his skin, only heightened by the small, stolen moments with Ilya. Every time Ilya would glance over, he’d find Shane’s eyes on him and his lips would tick up into a smile. Sometimes, when Ilya was at the other side of the stage, Shane would flick his eyes up to the screen next to them and look at the close up of Ilya’s curls sticking to his skin and the bead of sweat sliding down his neck. Ilya Rozanov is the charismatic lead singer of Overtime Lights. Shane Hollander plays hockey and doesn't know anything about music. A night in New York leads to the reveal of their secret relationship.
