Shane shakes his head before he even enters the room, seeing, unsurprisingly, Ilya leaned against the doorframe holding the garland in both hands directly under the mistletoe. “Is that so?” “Hmm, yes. Yuna said she wanted it on the mantle, and I don’t actually know where that goes.” he adds, sobering a touch with his actual question, but it doesn’t last long. “But I need you to come over here and help me. It is very important. For Christmas.” he adds and starts twirling the end of the garland with one hand. (ie. ilya is spending christmas with the hollanders for the first time and shane surprises him with misteltoe and ilya becomes a bit of a menace about it)

    When Yuna accidentally interrupts Shane and Ilya sharing an intimate moment, Ilya is completely willing to play the bad guy to control the situation. Even though he wants for the approval of Shane's parents, he will sacrifice it to establish clearly-needed boundaries. As if Shane would let him take this on alone. Meanwhile, Yuna does not entirely realize what she had stepped into, and she is left upset and defensive. David is horrified that his wife has apparently not been heeding his many (many) warnings to text ahead of time. One day Ilya may be the favorite son, and Shane can watch fondly as he solves puzzles and eats ice cream at his parents' house. It just takes some time and work and adjustment to get there.

    But once he realizes that, he immediately knows that he can't come out. It would ruin his legacy.

    He's pretty sure that's why he doesn't want to come out. No other reason. Right?

    He is sure that's all it is until Ilya asks him if he would be safe if he came out. And he can't answer.

That is, of course, until the FanMail leak takes a wrecking ball to her boys’ lives (fuck you very much, Brad). After that, she decides she’s not going to let the rest of the world dictate the love that Ilya and Shane share. She’s not going to let them get beaten down by the assholes out there who see anything but two people in love. AKA: Five times Yuna shows the world Ilya's her son, too, and one time he calls her mom.
