  2. “My - it’s my,” Shane pants, his hand flapping like Ilya’s sometimes does when he’s searching for an English translation that he can’t quite remember. Shane’s heart squeezes painfully. “He’s-“ He wants to say my boyfriend is on that plane. He wants to cry, and throw things, and scream the love of my life might be dying while we stand here. But he doesn’t. He can’t. His voice can’t find the words, can’t find the strength to speak, and even if he could - would he? Would Shane tell the whole world that for him, it has always been Ilya? Will only ever be Ilya? (Or, the plane scene in The Long Game goes a little differently.)

As he walked past he caught a brief exchange between the two. “Thanks for cleaning up out here, I know there are things you’d rather do than clean up after us,” Rozanov laughed and kissed Shane. “Yes, I do not like playing maid for Boiziau and Pike. But I know you will stress if it is not done, so I do it. Go, relax.” In response, Shane melted into Rozanov. Shit, JJ could understand why. That was actually romantic as fuck. Damn, Rozanov. 5. Hayden smiles and bobs his head to his earbuds as he crosses the lobby floor, Dunkin’ bag swinging in his hand and an icy red Coolatta practically glowing in his other one. His shoes squeak cheerfully on the tiles. A member of the hotel staff in a sharp suit and a gleaming bronze name tag presses the elevator button for him, doors swooshing open just as he reaches it. He has a box of Munchkins in the Dunkin’ bag and everything, figuring he might as well treat himself with the whole, blissful evening ahead, the victory still singing in his veins. Tonight is gonna be perfect. * With Shane disappearing to go and spend time with Ilya, Hayden's pretty hyped up to have some alone time. Except seemingly everything goes wrong, and it turns out Shane isn't as far from their shared room as they thought. Working title: hayden x ear plugs

  6. Shane and Rozanov don’t usually work together. In fact, they never do. They work on different client teams, since there’s no need for more than one person at their level in the squad. They’re simply too good. Quite frankly, they cost too much. So when Scott says that he wants them both to drop whatever they’re working on, because he has this client proposal that’s due on Friday — literally five days from now, Shane’s counted — it’s unprecedented. Shane has a million reasons why this is a bad idea, waiting on the tip of his tongue. First of all, he’s not sure he actually can work with Rozanov. He feels panicked at the thought, can feel his tie getting tighter around his neck, threatening to close off his supply of oxygen at any moment. Scott glances between the two of them, at Rozanov sitting calmly and Shane feeling like he’s about to have a heart attack, and asks, “I assume you two get along okay?” Rozanov looks across at Shane, licks his lips slowly before he speaks. “We are very close.” OR, a Hollanov co-workers AU

"You're supposed to smoke over there." Someone said from behind Ilya. Ilya almost dropped his cigarette. His English was shitty, but he had studied that sentence enough times over the years to understand it immediately. He didn't even think about his words much anymore, but it was impossible to avoid them. He turned instinctively, and was face to face with Shane fucking Hollander. Out of almost seven billion people, of course Ilya's soulmate had to be his fated rival. It was almost poetic. Still, Ilya had enough sense to realize just how bad this was. or, Shane says Ilya's soulmate words. Ilya vows to never speak a word to him to keep him from finding out. They fall in love anyway.

  8. The square in front of the rink was plastered with posters of the players, ticket prices, and the location of games. Nowhere was there a poster of the Montreal Mighties because the team Shane played for was, according to everyone in that building, not the main attraction. After all, it didn't matter that in their last game Shane scored more goals in the first period than most do all game, or that he won every face off, or that he can out-skate anyone on any of the teams in his league. No, what mattered was that three months before his rookie year his traitorous body pushed itself into a heat and any chance he had of playing pro had vanished with it. No pro team wanted to sign him, even when he’d been in the running for first draft pick, and he’d taken up the only offer he did get from the Montreal Mighties because it was close to home and it allowed him to be close, if not a part of, the sport he’d dedicated his whole life to. Then he gets the call from All-Stars. The catch? His captain is the obnoxiously perfect alpha Ilya Rozanov.

  13. Shane is at a sports bar in Tampa when people at his table start talking shit about Ilya. It becomes impossible to keep his mouth shut. Or, an alternative retelling of how Hayden finds out. Shane never really got the point of going out after a game, and he certainly didn’t understand going out with players from the opposing team. Still, he somehow found himself at some sports bar in Tampa, seated around a table with Hayden, J.J., and what felt like half of Tampa Thunder. It was actually just three of them, one of whom J.J. knew from junior hockey. Or something. “—and I swear we just got her to sleep through the night.” Brandon Wheeler, one of the Tampa players, rubbed a hand over his face. “And then suddenly she just started waking up again at 5 A.M.” Hayden winced. “That time’s really rough. Have you tried a white noise machine?” “Darla’s sister keeps suggesting it, so I guess we should.” Shane tried hard to keep a polite expression on his face. Sitting in a sports bar in Tampa talking about babies wasn’t really his idea of a good time. His idea of a good time was to go to the hotel and nap. Or FaceTime Ilya, but Ilya was occupied at the moment. Shane’s eyes flicked unbidden to the game on the TV. The Centaurs were playing at home against the Admirals and, by some miracle, they had yet to concede a goal. They hadn’t scored one either, but they weren’t losing. Ilya popped up in frame, mouthing off to Scott Hunter who rolled his eyes at him, and by now Shane was familiar enough with this dynamic to bite back a laugh. He watched his boyfriend on the screen, surrounded by people who had no idea. He wasn’t the only one watching the game, though, and one of the other Tampa players scoffed loudly. Andy Something-or-other. “Rozanov is such a fucking scumbag,” he spat, turning away from the game again. “I hate playing against that guy, he pisses me off.” J.J. snorted into his beer. “Is there anyone Rozanov doesn’t piss off?” Feeling his shoulders tense, Shane forced himself to reach out for his ginger ale and take a slow sip. It wasn’t the first time he’d found himself roped into similar conversations, but it was his absolute least favorite situation to be in. He hated hearing people who knew nothing about Ilya tear him to pieces. It was one thing when people said bad things about Shane, but there was something so fucked up about listening to people dig into the person he loved most in the world. “Oh, yeah, I guess you’d know better than anyone,” Brandon said, gesturing at Shane with a laugh. “That guy’s been in your face being annoying for years. Don’t know how you haven’t punched the daylights out of him.” Shane just shrugged, not finding it in him to agree with it. A few years ago, he’d have played along a little, just half-hearted insults and laughs, but he was fed up with all of it. “Shane’s a saint,” Hayden said, clapping him on the shoulder. “He wouldn’t punch the worst person you could think of, probably.” Shane rather wanted to punch Andy, actually. There was something about his face. Of course, Ilya Rozanov had impeccable timing and chose that moment to score. Shane sucked in a breath because it was a fucking cool one too, and he watched as Ilya pumped his arms over his head, skated over and crowed in Scott’s face before being engulfed by his team. They zoomed in his beaming face and Shane had to press his lips together to not smile along with him. Everyone else around the table groaned and the goal with the ensuing celebration added fuel to the fire. “I hear he’s honestly fucking disgusting,” Andy said. “Has like three women going and none of them know they’re the sidepiece.” Shane should honestly just laugh. Because it was so obviously stupid and made up shit. But he didn’t want to laugh. He actually kind of wanted to cry because it was so unfair. If they were out, they wouldn’t be saying this. If they were out, he could defend Ilya freely. In the back of his head, he knew they would just say something else. Would say he was cheating on Shane, probably. And still, the anger was building inside him. Brandon nodded at his teammate. “It’s people like him that give the rest of us a bad reputation. Everyone assuming we all cheat on our wives, like we’re all complete animals.” “Yeah, fuck, it’s so annoying,” Hayden said. “I get that shit all the time.” The third Tampa player finally chimed in as Shane was quietly planning his escape. “Probably has a bunch of kids everywhere. They’ll be their own hockey team in like 20 years.” Everyone else laughed at that. Obnoxiously loudly, like it was the funniest thing any of them had ever heard. Something snapped in him, something he’d been holding together with the force of his will and the clench of his teeth. Maybe it was the implication that Ilya would be a shitty dad that finally broke every single resolve. “He’s actually a good guy,” Shane said quietly, but the whole table fell silent for a moment. J.J. looked at him with his eyebrows raised, and the Tampa players still had signs of laughter in their expressions. “You’ve been enemies for like a decade,” Brandon said. “What do you mean, good guy?” “Rivals,” Shane corrected, his hands twisting in his lap. “And yeah, almost a decade. So I know him better than you, then, don’t I? And Rozanov isn’t just whatever you see on the ice or hear from the rumour mill.” “Alright, relax?” Brandon laughed, dismissive.

  15. “Hey, Hollander, did you see the news about Rozanov?” Shane’s head snaps up and he almost gives himself whiplash. It’s deja vu, and it throws him back to that moment last season when Ilya’s father passed and he went MIA. His teammates had speculated, but Shane had known the truth – Ilya’s father had passed and he’d flown back to Russia to take care of family matters. “No?” He states simply, because he doesn’t trust his tongue to not betray him. What could Ilya possibly have done that would get him on the news? A phone is passed over, and Shane squints against the light and the tiny font of the news article. In big, bold letters the title reads ‘HOCKEY STAR ILYA ROZANOV SEVERELY INJURED IN CAR CRASH.’ It’s accompanied by a generic picture from the Boston news channel, but Shane doesn’t scroll down any further. He can’t. He doesn’t think his brain is capable of any thoughts currently. The phone drops out of his shaking hand and he realizes belatedly that tears are blurring his vision. “I gotta go.” --- OR, Ilya is in a car accident. Shane hurries to be by his side, and outs them in the process. Set during the year Ilya is playing for Boston.

  16. just a fic about them being cute shane and Ilya had now been married for six months and playing together for five. They loved every second of it, the games, the chirping, the shared hotel rooms that somehow always ended with one of them stealing the other’s pillow. It felt like making up for all the years they’d wasted pretending they weren’t in love. Ilya adored it. He could finally hold Shane’s hand in public, talk about him in interviews, and say things like “my husband” without flinching. But there was still that tiny voice at the back of his head whispering hide. For Shane, that voice was more like a full marching band. He was getting better, though. Slowly. He didn’t flinch when Ilya grabbed his hand anymore. He only scowled a littlewhen Ilya kissed his cheek in front of teammates. But still, the world hadn’t quite caught up with them. The media preferred to call them rivals instead of married. And the ones who did acknowledge it seemed to dissect their every move like scientists studying penguin mating rituals. Shane hated it. He’d blocked every gossip account within a ten-mile radius. He didn’t see why two hockey players being in love needed to be news. Meanwhile, Ilya lived on the side of social media where people posted fan art, heart emojis, and wrote essays about how they’d “saved hockey.” He saw the good. He wanted to give them more. Shane wanted to crawl into the nearest rink freezer and hide. Still, there were always haters, the “keep hockey straight” crowd. Shane ignored them. Ilya pretended to, but sometimes the comments still stung. They were walking hand in hand with Anya before a game, their ritual, talking about their six-month anniversary plans. Ilya was thrilled. Shane was nervous. “I have it all planned out,” Ilya announced, beaming. Shane side-eyed him. “That’s… not reassuring.” “Ah, moya lyubov, is surprise,” Ilya smirked. “That’s even less reassuring.” Before Ilya could retort, a group of young hockey bros spotted them. “Rozanov! Hollander!” Shane’s shoulders tensed immediately. The guys came over, grinning, phones ready. “Can we get a photo?” Ilya glanced at his husband, who smiled a little too tightly and nodded. Ilya squeezed his hand. “Of course.” They posed, smiled, said polite goodbyes. The fans walked away, but Shane caught the sideways look at their intertwined hands. His stomach twisted. “Come, let’s go home,” Ilya said softly, tugging his hand. He didn’t add before I commit a murder with a hockey stick. At home, Shane started packing their gear while Ilya made lunch and fed Anya. His phone buzzed. It was Harris. Harris: hey, ilya. hate to do this, but you said you wanted to know when stuff popped up. might wanna see this. Attached was a photo of them from earlier — smiling, holding hands. Cute. Except the caption read: “Guess they’re still trying to make their ‘relationship’ look normal.” Ilya stared at it for a full ten seconds before muttering something in Russian that probably shouldn’t be translated. Ilya: thank you, Harris. will hide from Shane. Ilya: why can’t they just accept us? Harris: they’re idiots. don’t let it get to you. Ilya: I don’t. it’s Shane I worry about. He sighed, shoved his phone away, and went back to making lunch. Halfway through, Shane wandered in and they got… distracted. In the way that leads to being late for warm-ups. By the time Shane’s phone alarm went off, they were both breathless and tangled on the couch. “...worth it,” Ilya panted. “Completely unprofessional,” Shane muttered, buttoning his shirt. “But yes.” As they drove to the rink, Shane scrolled through the Centaurs group chat, laughing at the chaos. He didn’t mention the photo. But something in him had snapped when he saw it. He was tired. Tired of pretending, tired of being polite, tired of hiding behind “no comment.” So when they arrived, Shane turned to Ilya, grabbed his jersey, and kissed him. Hard. Long enough that when they pulled away, another car had pulled up beside them. Bood leaned out his window, smirking. “Damn, your relationship gets questioned and suddenly you two go full rom-com in the parking lot.” Shane’s face went red. “They have to see what they’re missing out on,” he shot back, to the utter shock of both Bood and Ilya. Ilya blinked. “Who are you and what have you done with my husband?” Inside, Bood elbowed Evan. “Hollander’s snapped. Love finally broke him.” During warm-ups, Shane skated next to Ilya, watching him laugh. Why had he kept the two halves of his life separate for so long? Maybe the point wasn’t to prove love and hockey could coexist, maybe it was to just live it. Then Ilya’s hair came loose from under his helmet. Shane, without thinking, pulled off his glove and fixed it. The look Ilya gave him was somewhere between shock and heart eyes. They won 2–1. Both scored. Of course.

  19. They’d both given each other spectacular blow jobs, but Shane didn’t have time to linger or bask in the afterglow. They needed to rehydrate and get some electrolytes in them given that their next game was only two short days away, his mind already churning over strategy. He padded over to the kitchen, leaving Ilya sprawled on the couch. “Lasted almost a minute, that’s got to be a record, Hollander,” he chirped. ...or, a post-BJ disagreement over a Centaurs hoodie turns heated, but in a fun way.

  20. At a camp lunch, Ilya finds out that people ship Shane and Hayden. He is not happy. “You've really never heard of Shayden?” Harris’ jaw dropped in delight, and Shane grimaced. “No. What is Shayden?” Ilya looked around at the faces of the rest of his camp counselors, agitated in confusion at Max Riley's laughter. Abruptly, Hayden got up from the table, red face betraying him as he muttered, "I can't be here for this," and left the room. “Here we go,” J.J. scrubbed a hand over his face, trying to hide a grin. “It's their couple name!” Harris exclaimed. “What.” Ilya’s voice dropped. “Jesus Christ,” Shane sighed, mostly to himself. “Their couple name?” Ilya scoffed. “Yeah, like on Tumblr and stuff.” Max piped up, still laughing. “There's, like, people who make videos and collages and write fan fiction about them.” Ilya's jaw tightened, and Shane looked like he wanted to perish into the ground, intensely focused on his salad. “And you are aware of this?” His Russian accent was clipped and bitter. “I’ve heard of it.” Shane muttered, refusing to look up from his lunch. “What about us?” Ilya huffed, sending misdirected ire at Harris. “Do we have a couple name?” “Of course.” Harris only grinned, nodding. “You guys are Hollanov. It’s been around for ages. Let me tell you, those guys were thrilled to be right.” “Hollanov? Why not Rozander?” “Is that really what you're focusing on right now?” Shane sent him a flat look. “Rozander sounds better.” Ilya grumbled. “They’re both awful.” Troy winced. “Yeah, but you can’t deny that Shayden really rolls off the tongue.” Leah chimed in, earning herself a glare. “What? I’m not the one doing it! More of a K-pop shipper myself.” “What is a shipper?” Ilya scowled, unsure which part of this conversation was irritating him most — feeling so out of the loop on so many English words (what the fuck was Tumblr?), or the concept of Shayden. “Here, let me show you.” Max pulled up his phone, immediately finding thousands of posts dedicated to the beautiful love between Shane and his best friend. The two of them laughing together. Joking around in team promo videos. Holding each other’s shoulders on the ice, speaking directly into each other’s ears. Cheering with the Stanley Cup. Out pushing a stroller. “Okay, that one’s fucked.” Shane pointed at the phone. “They literally cropped Jackie out. She was there.” “They are all fucked!” Ilya practically yelled. “You do make a cute couple.” Harris said, popping a chip into his mouth, only to get a murderous look from Ilya. “What?! They do!” “This is so fucking weird.” Shane sounded dazed as Max played a slowed down, black and white video of them hugging after a goal, set to a Lana del Rey song. Dear God, when I get to heaven, please let me bring my man… “We are a cuter couple.” Ilya grumbled, grabbing the phone out of Max’s hand. “What do I search?” “Here. I’ll do it.” Harris took the reins, instantly finding what he was looking for. “See? You guys get stuff like this.” The photo he found was a screengrab of the two of them facing off at an All Stars game early in their careers. The eye contact between them was admittedly charged, and the caption said, “If a rivalry lasts more than 10 years, then you are no longer just rivals. You are GAY.” Ilya chuckled, despite himself. He’d fucked Shane’s mouth until his eyes watered that night. “Shayden is more loving. Hollanov is more homoerotic.” “That, I cannot argue.” Ilya tilted his head towards his husband, and Shane scowled. “Hold up, I’m searching you guys on AO3.” Leah stared down at her own phone before bursting into laughter. “Oh my God.” “What’s AO3?” Shane looked nervous now. “There are so many more Shayden stories, holy fuck.” Leah laughed, still scrolling. “You guys have a lot of catching up to do.”
