After Shane and Ilya move in together, Hollander suddenly starts noticing strange Russian habits, rituals, and little bits of madness that his Canadian brain needs some time to process. And somehow, all of it makes him feel equally confused and… completely in love with the chaos that so effortlessly comes with his boyfriend. // Ilya is already playing for Ottawa

  3. “What the fuck are you doing, Hollander?” he demands harshly. “Why are you even here?” He watches as Hollander flinches and his face falls, a mixture of hurt and confusion so potent that Ilya desperately wishes he could shove the words back in his mouth. “Where else would I be, Ilya?” Hollander asks quietly, Ilya’s name like a gut punch every time he hears it drop from Hollander’s lips. “You’re my—” But Ilya cuts him off. He can’t stand Hollander seeing him like this, so vulnerable again, when he already walked away from Ilya once. “I’m not your anything, Hollander. Go back to Rose Landry.” OR Ilya wakes up in 2027, living his happily ever after. But his mind thinks it's 2017 and the last time he remembers seeing Shane Hollander was when he walked out of Ilya's house after eating his tuna melt.

  7. Yuna Hollander rounded the corner and finally came in view of the door to Shane’s hospital room. Her hand was almost on the handle when she noticed someone was already in the room, and she stopped in her tracks. At first she thought it might be one of Shane's teammates checking in on him, but the blonde curls at the back of the man’s head told her he wasn’t anyone she would have recognised from the Metros. Thinking about it, it made no sense, but he almost looked like— A clipped voice, slightly muffled by the door but with an unmistakable Russian accent confirmed her bewildered assumption. “Could have been worse,” she heard Ilya Rozanov say. When Ilya goes to visit Shane in the hospital in episode 5, Shane's mother sees him. They talk.

  10. Shane yells at the team after he's outed via one of Hayden's fanvids. It's actually rather cathartic for him. And for the first time, the team gets to see what Shane is like when he's not keeping himself held under so much pressure, and maybe they see why he gets along with Ilya Rozanov so well. ... When Shane walked into the locker room the day after he was outed, the room was already pretty quiet, but somehow his entrance signalled the team to become even quieter; to freeze in place, perhaps even attempt to hold their breath. The door behind him thumped into the frame as an icy silence crept across the room. He doesn't know what to say, how to start. He and Ilya had made plans, of course. He had statements prepared that they had thrown together last minute based on multiple scenarios, his mom and Ilya’s agent had worked through them with them last night. But now that he was faced with a room full of men he had worked with for years, he knew that he couldn't use them here. They were impersonal, dry things meant for corporate PR and social media posts, not the sort of thing you said to your team face to face, and something about the empty silence stretching ahead told him that this wasn't going to be a Scott Hunter coming out story unless he dragged them there kicking and screaming. The scent of old socks and sweat-soaked pads turned even more sour in his lungs. Shane quickly made eye contact with Hayden, who he had talked with on the phone last night- apologizing for his fanvid being the leak. Shane forgave him, it wasn't his fault. He and Ilya should have been more careful. His friend gave him a nod, and a pained smile. He knew how badly Shane had been spiralling about all of this. Shane looked over at JJ, who he hadn't talked to. He wasn't making eye contact now, either. He sucked in a breath, and spoke. “I know you're all thinking it. And I'm releasing a proper statement on social media… right about now. Yes, I'm gay.” You could've heard a pin drop in that locker room. You could, actually, hear one of the showers dripping, and someone's phone vibrate with an incoming message. And Shane definitely heard Drapeau scoff before crossing his arms and glaring at Shane with a mixture of disgust and disdain. “You people are always being all flashy and rubbing our faces in your depravity, why can't you just shut up and let hockey be hockey, eh?” No one else said anything, though from the ashamed glances to the side from some and conspiratorial looks between some others, Drapeau was not the only one thinking it. Hayden looked ready to step in- if unsure what to say when doing so- but Shane shook his head. He didn't need him to speak for him just yet. Because Shane felt shockingly clear-headed in that moment. He'd been spiralling all night since the news had broken, held together only by first Ilya and then his mom's practicality. Even with that terror settled, he'd been low-key panicking over this reveal for the past decade, constantly worrying about when it would happen and what would do it and how people would react. And now it had. And people weren't reacting well. But that was… that was the worst case scenario. There was nothing bad left to happen. He had already talked to management, already knew he was fine with them (though maybe not good) and was definitely finishing out the season. It was done. All that was left to do was ride this out, and fuck if it wasn't a relief that there was nothing terrible left in the roster of panic in his brain. So Shane was all out of fear, and free to just feel completely, incandescently angry. He barked out a laugh, and it seemed to startle some of his teammates. “I was literally fucking doing that, asshole. I had zero plans to have some big flashy coming out moment like Scott Hunter. I just wanted to live my life and play hockey, and if no one had cared about some background detail in a video about something completely unrelated and had just moved the fuck on then we wouldn't have to be having this conversation at all. But everyone else seems to care that the person I'm in love with has a dick, so this is the conversation we're having. Yes, I'm gay. Yes, I have a boyfriend who loves me, and yes, I love him. No, we're not planning on fucking out on the ice in the middle of a game. So, is that enough for you to chill out and trust that I'm still the same fucking person who won this team the cup back to back?” He scanned over the room, and while a few people did seem to be settling, the majority weren't. And one of those was JJ. That was one regret Shane had in this. JJ was his friend, he should have told him a while ago; especially after Hayden had figured it out and the world didn't end, but Shane had always thought there would be more time. JJ’s eyes held that pain of betrayal when he spoke to Shane. “Your boyfriend is Ilya fucking Rozanov. You don't think that'll cause problems when we play the Centaurs?” But that was a question Shane had an easy answer for. “It never has before,” he replied evenly. Then Comeau jumped in. “How are we supposed to believe that? They won our last game-” “That's because they're a good team,” Hayden interjected, trying to relieve some of the pressure on Shane. It didn't really work, though from the side eye he received, the other players had a pretty good idea where he stood in the overall argument now.

  11. When Ilya is asked a simple question for a team Q&A he finds himself spiraling. "What’s your favorite word or sentence in English?" English was never something he loved. It was something he learned to survive, to leave, to play hockey at the highest level. It brought embarrassment, ridicule, and the constant feeling of being reduced. But it also brought Shane.

  13. Shane knows it’s technically against the law to throttle a client. Even if they’re really handsome and especially when they might be buying a four-million-dollar house from him. But twenty houses later, this was actually starting to become ridiculous. - Shane is a realtor. Ilya, funnily enough, finds something wrong with every house Shane shows him. It was all Shane’s fault really. He had thought this would be a quick, easy deal. When he first spoke to Mr. Rozanov over the phone, the guy seemed like he needed a house pretty urgently. He’s just relocated to Ottawa and his budget is extortionate. Nice, Shane thinks. Show him a few stylishly-staged properties, he’ll surely throw a ridiculous amount of money at the first decent one and Shane will make an easy five-figure commission and cruise through the rest of the quarter without stressing about hitting his target. Their first meeting is at a stunning four-bedroom, three-bathroom mansion in an affluent south-western suburb of Ottawa. Shane waits in the driveway and almost jumps out of his skin when there’s a sudden deafening roar and a sleek, silver Lamborghini comes swerving around the corner and pulls up in front of the house. The man who climbs out of the low-slung car looks like a fucking model. He’s wearing an expensive looking wool coat, dark sunglasses and has golden brown curls that the breeze is currently ruffling gently like it was paid to do so. Shane is standing next to his sensible Toyota wearing his sensible dark blue suit and feels like a dork. “Mr. Rozanov,” Shane starts, holding out a hand. “Shane Hollander. Thanks for coming by today.” Mr. Rozanov slowly removes his sunglasses and looks Shane up and down in a way that feels like he’s being undressed with his eyes as they shake hands. Shane tries not to flush under the attention and promptly fails. “Nice to meet you, Shane Hollander. Call me Ilya.” - “The property was built in 1985, but the last owners did a full refurbishment so all the fittings are mostly new. Miele kitchen appliances. All the cabinetry is Canadian maple.” Shane watches as Ilya walks around the central island, trailing his fingers over the countertop. He stops at the sink and peers through the kitchen windows at the yard, which is fringed with tall trees. “Hmm. It is a bit dark inside. I need more natural light.” Shane blinks. “Oh. Well, you could landscape the garden, get rid of some trees. It’ll let in more light.” Ilya doesn’t seem convinced. “Seems like a lot of work. Maybe this one is not the right fit.” “Would you like to see the upstairs, at least?” Ilya shrugs a shoulder casually, which Shane takes to mean yes. He leads him up the stairs and feels Ilya’s eyes on his back the whole time. In the primary bathroom, Ilya gestures to the singular sink. “No, I need two sinks.” “You want his-and-her sinks?” Shane asks. He smartly does not mention the fact that Ilya had clearly told him he would be living alone, and absolutely has no need for two sinks. “Yes. Two sinks.” “Okay,” Shane says. He pulls out his phone. “Why don’t you tell me your wishlist now, so I can get it right for the next properties I show you?” Natural light, Shane types into his Notes app as Ilya starts listing them off, rapid fire. His- and-her sinks. Ensuite bathroom. Floor to ceiling windows. Enough garage space for two cars. “Why is called his-and-her sinks?” Ilya asks later when they are back downstairs. “It is sexist, no? Maybe it is hers-and-hers. Or his-and-his.” He shoots Shane a wink before heading out the front door. Well, then. - The next property Shane shows Ilya is a modern three-bedroom, high rise condo which comes with two parking spaces. He didn’t specifically say he wanted a house, after all, just that he needs somewhere to live. The condo has floor to ceiling windows and a large balcony, there are his-and-her – sorry, two sinks - in the primary ensuite (Shane double checked), and is flooded with so much natural light you practically need sunglasses. Ilya meets him in the fancy lobby, and doesn’t really say anything as they ride up to the 18th floor. He looks like an off-duty model, in his dark leather jacket with his curls combed back. Shane tries not to stare and instead scrolls through his email notifications on the ride up. Just before the doors open, Shane glances up and sees that Ilya had been looking at him, on the mirrored doors of the elevator. They catch each other’s eye in the reflection and Shane’s stomach does something funny. Once they get into the unit, he points out the chef ’s kitchen, the steel appliances gleaming under all that natural light. He tells Ilya about the state of the art gym and heated indoor lap pool that comes as part of the amenities. Pointedly shows him the ensuite with its two sinks and rain shower. Ilya has a small smile on his face through the whole pitch, and looks endeared when Shane starts waxing lyrical about the Bardiglio marble as though he laid the fucking tile work himself.
