I Got Dreams But I Can't Make Myself Believe Them by SuddenlyLaury
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2025-12-28
He knows that they voted him into the alternate captain position, but the feelings of inadequacy and being an outsider do more than just linger. He can’t stop thinking about it. Can’t stop thinking about the fact that he wouldn’t feel this way had the country that brought him up not turned its back on him. “I mean,” starts the interviewer curtly, “there are a lot of Canadians who feel uneasy about a foreigner even being on the team, let alone being a captain. I guess what I’m really trying to ask is: why make the switch at all? Just to get around the ban?” OR: Ilya and Shane go to the Olympics together and feelings are complicated

Shane Hollander Is Not Here to Explain Himself by theaa
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-27
Now thirty-one, Hollander is sitting across from me on a soft leather couch, part of a home study in the Muskoka lake house he owns. (His parents’ cottage, the one from his childhood, is a ten-minute drive away.) It’s a tastefully decorated room, with big ceiling-high windows that let in plenty of summer light, and walnut shelves full of books — mostly sports-related. Hollander looks at home here, dressed in a loose pair of light-wash jeans and a plain navy t- shirt, which shows off his impressive arm muscle. Everything is just the right side of comfortably casual. When I initially booked this interview, I expected to be asked to meet in Ottawa, perhaps even New York, as Hollander has plenty of sponsorship deals that keep him busy, even in the summer months when hockey is on a break. I expected to be fitted in, that is. The current Alternate Captain for the Ottawa Centaurs has never given access like this before, and, frankly, I was unsure how much he’d be willing to share.

But then, when Ilya had finally set him down and tugged him in close for a kiss, he’d trailed his lips right to the sensitive skin beneath Shane’s ear. Then he’d whispered, low and growly, “My room number is 1710.” Shane remembers laughing even harder, “Yeah, you idiot, it’s mine too.” Ilya raised a single, perfect eyebrow, “And how does bellhop afford such a room?” -- Fresh from a slump-ending victory, the Ottawa Centaurs' star players have a special celebration.

Shane can’t think of a better way to wake up than this: The sun is casting rays from the big window, spilling all over their white bedsheets, blanketing them in luminosity and warmth. The big comforter is haphazardly thrown around them, half of it on the floor, and there is a glow, a light that he can’t even begin to explain, everywhere. If he raises his head just slightly from the warmth of Ilya’s—his husband’s—back he can see the river, and make out the blue sky. He chooses not to raise his head and instead bury the growing smile on his face to Ilya’s back. His husband. Or: their first morning as husbands spent dancing to an old Japanese song and saying vows in Russian.

Ilya didn’t listen, leaning in a little closer so their arms touched for a moment. They’d been warned by his mother about the intensity of Japanese summers, and the both of them had grown up cold weather boys, but Shane always found Ilya’s warmth otherworldly, a sensation that defied any measure of temperature. Shane and Ilya take a trip.

“What Hollander? Never seen a pocket pussy before?” Shane snorts, he’s seen a pocket pussy before- but this one is a little different. It’s shaped like an egg. He frowns. Ilya takes the egg-shaped object out of the bag, grinning as he unravels the packaging, “Is Japanese sex toy. I bought it online.” Or Ilya makes a sex itinerary for his schedule-loving husband.

Inside the layers upon layers of white tissue paper is a set of navy blue, lacy, lingerie. He can feel heat climbing up the back of his neck and up into his face and his ears. He scrambles for the phone and holds it back up to his ear. "Rose, what the fuck?!" he yelps. She cackles down the line. "Happy anniversary, baby!" "It's not my—it's January, Rose!" She continues to laugh, but it's not as infectious as it usually is. He pinches the bridge of his nose. "Rose." OR: Rose Landry is a bad influence. Ilya could kiss her.

Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)

[Takes place post-TLG. Spoilers ahead.] “I have bad feeling about this.” The two men looked up at the two-story suburban Ottawa house. Strings of multicoloured lights twirled around the squat, snow-covered cedar trees in the front yard, and a little cobblestone walkway curved up from the driveway toward the porch. Shane looked over his shoulder and grinned. “You’re scared of my parents now?” Ilya raised one dubious eyebrow. “Is not just your parents inside. Also there are aunts. Uncles.” He shuddered dramatically. “You should not have told me about Great Aunt Alice.” Shane laughed. “It’s fine. Just ignore everything she says, and the rest are all gonna love you.” He leaned up on his tiptoes and kissed Ilya’s rough-stubbled cheek. “Just like I do.” “Like you do?” Ilya wiggled his eyebrows up and down, and Shane saw the start of a mischievous grin twinkling in his eyes. “This will make this party much more interesting.”

"I know I'm not tehnically your mother and I don't want to overstep here but I need you to know that I'm so insanelly proud of you and that both me and David are here for you forever. I can't even imagine how it must've felt like living your life carrying that burden on your back for all those years but we're here to take the load off, in whatever manner you want us to (...) "So, if that means motherly cuddling sessions, watching some cheesy cartoons or Hallmark movies let be it. If that means you calling us in the middle of the night because you had a panic attack and didn't want to bother Shane we'll be fine with that either. I just don't want you to be all alone when something like this happens." *** Or: Ilya has a nightmare about his mom while Shane is playing a game in New York. Shane smiles shakily and Ilya lets go, watching him walk up and slot in between Haas and Wyatt. Bood leans forward, "Hollander okay?" Ilya smiles a little at the concern in his friend's voice, "He will be fine. We will all be fine, because," Ilya raises his voice, carrying over the line of hockey players, "we are winning tonight!" The ground shakes with the force of the team hitting their sticks against the rubber floors. Outside, the announcer begins announcing the Centaurs, and within the span of a minute, all of their skates are hitting the ice. OR Shane and Ilya play the Stanley Cup finals. And then they celebrate. A lot.

Shane sucked in a deep breath as his head started to throb. His hand flew to the back of the head, heart racing wondering if he had an injury he didn't know about. Shane's hand glided over his hair and he felt for any bumps or dried blood but he felt nothing. The head pain was not due to any injury, so that was a relief. But it was still impeding his concentration on him trying to read his boring hockey book as his husband would say, but with it being the end of the season, Shane wanted to relax. He wanted to read his boring hockey book without a pesky headache. Or Shane tried to get rid of his headache and gives Ilya a heart attack instead.

under a borrowed sky by colorfulreverie
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2025-12-24
On christmas morning, Ilya finds himself awake before everyone else, restless under the weight of the holiday. As the day unfolds with Shane, their daughter, and a family built from choice rather than blood, christmas stops feeling like something borrowed, and starts to feel like his. Ilya had been awake since five in the morning, that wasn't anything unusual for him but in the past it had been for training or because of Shane's insane workout routine— and most recently, their daughter screaming at all hours of the morning. This morning he wasn't awake because their daughter had woken him up— miraculously, she was still asleep in her room, curled around the stuffed bear Yuna had given her last week, but because Ilya couldn’t stop thinking. Like his brain wouldn't shut off, and of course it was about something specific. Christmas. The word still felt strange on his tongue, like a borrowed thing he hadn’t quite earned yet despite all the holidays he'd spent with the Hollander family over the many years he and Shane had been together. He lay on his back staring at the ceiling, one arm thrown over his husbands side of the bed, listening to the steady sound of his breathing. Outside, the sky was still dark, snow falling heavily. Everything felt quiet in a way that made his chest ache. Ilya slipped out of bed carefully, like he was sneaking away from something that couldn't be, or shouldn't be disturbed. He pulled on a hoodie and padded down the hall, pausing outside their daughter’s room. He cracked the door open just enough to look inside. She was sprawled across her bed, dark curls sticking up in every direction, one sock kicked off in her sleep. Her nose crinkled as she breathed in and out. There were already too many toys in there with her. Ilya knew that. Shane had told him that many times. He had said, “she’s one, Ilya. She doesn’t need seventeen stuffed animals.” Ilya had nodded, agreeing with him, and then ordered five more. He closed the door softly, leaving her to sleep and went to the living room, where the christmas tree glowed faintly in the early morning light. The presents underneath it were.. excessive. Even by his standards. He crouched down and adjusted one of the bows, frowning at himself as he remembered dinner the previous night, he'd been fretting over the wrapping and Shane had told him it didn't matter. She wouldn't remember her very first christmas anyway. But it did matter. All of it mattered. Back in Russia, he of course did not celebrate christmas in the same way. No lights. No tree. No stupid matching pajamas that David made them wear. New Year’s Eve had been the big thing, and even that had been.. quiet. Heavy. Something to get through because the person who made it special in the first place was no longer with them, and Ilya was not allowed to talk about that. This was different, though. This was theirs. A day that he got to spend with the family he created, and loved more than anything. Shane shuffled in a few moments later, hair sticking up much like their daughters, eyes fighting to stay open, wrapped in one of Ilya’s hoodies. “You’re up early.” Shane whispered through a yawn, voice thick with sleep. Ilya startled, then relaxed. “Could not sleep.” Shane leaned against him, arms slipping around his waist, forehead pressed between Ilya’s shoulder blades. “You’re vibrating.” “Vibrating?" He repeated, his brows furrowing. “Mhm.” Shane whispered against his skin. “You’ve been restless since, like, December first.” Ilya turned, pulling Shane against his chest. “I just want it to be good.” Shane looked up at him then, really looked, his expression softening. “It will be.” “I want it to be perfect.” Shane didn’t hesitate to comfort his husband this time. Nodding against his chest. “Yeah. Me too.” Their daughter woke up an hour later, announcing it by babbling at the top of her little lungs. Shane laughed as Ilya bolted upright, nearly tripping over the dog toys scattered around the floor in his rush to get to her room first. She was wide awake, big brown eyes staring up at him, a big smile on her face as Ilya scooped her up into his arms. “Good morning, solnyshko.” he grinned, pressing a kiss to her messy head of dark curls. She crinkled her nose, reminding him of someone else he loved more than anything in the world. Shane leaned in the doorway, watching them with a smile that made Ilya feel almost naked. Like his husband could really see him, something that no one else had ever been able to do and even after all these years, it still made him a little nervous. Uncomfortable, maybe? "You ready?” He asked. Ilya swallowed, nodding. “Da.” They sat on the floor together in front of the christmas tree, their daughter between them, having more fun with the paper than the gifts that were inside, shrieking with delight every time they helped her rip it. Ilya watched her intently, like he was afraid she might disappear if he blinked for too long. “You went overboard.” Shane murmured under his breath, fond, as she opened her fourth present in a row. Ilya could tell he didn't mean it. He was just as happy sat watching her as he

He glances at the window. Nobody is looking. Their cards are down. All of their cards are down. He’s still looking over his shoulder. “You are out, you are on a team with potential -” “We,” Ilya corrects. “We are all of those things.” The start of the season marks Shane’s first year with the Centaurs and playing with his husband.
