After their wedding but before the start of their first hockey season on the same team, Shane and Ilya sit down for a sports network interview, finally explaining their relationship to the world. They sat in the green room, huddled together on the couch, hands clasped, Shane breathing suspiciously fast and loud. Ilya wondered how close he was to full-on panicking. He squeezed Shane’s hand, and leaned over to kiss his cheek. “Hey,” he intoned softly next to Shane’s ear. “It will be fine. All is OK here. Just you and me talking to a nice guy like we are in our living room.” Shane made a distressed noise. “If our living room had five thousand cameras in it.” Ilya smiled. “Is only three cameras, I think. You can ignore them. Come on. We have cameras in our faces every day. This is no different.” “Except we’re talking about our relationship to millions of people, not just having our picture taken or talking about hockey. Why did we agree to this?” Shane whined with an upward, slightly hysterical lilt to the last few words. Ilya decided being sympathetic and soothing was not working. Time to change tactics. “Enough of this. You are Shane Hollander, hockey superstar. Your picture is hanging on the wall of every teenager in Canada. You told off Roger Crowell to his face. You have given a million interviews to reporters before. You can sit down for one more. This is nothing for you.” Shane huffed out a breath, put his hands on his thighs, and stood up. “You’re right. I’m being stupid. It’s fine. We don’t have to hide anymore. We don’t WANT to hide anymore. So let’s get this over with and then maybe people will stop asking us annoying questions everywhere we go.” Ilya smirked as he also stood up and moved next to Shane. “That is maybe a little too optimistic, but yes. We need to, what is the phrase? Set the record straight.” Shane leaned over and kissed him softly. “OK. I’m good. Thank you.” Just then, the young intern who had been put in charge of them returned to the room. “Mr. Ryland is ready for you. Let me bring you to the stage. As a reminder, this is pre-recorded, so if you don’t want to answer a question, or you flub a sentence, we’ll edit around it. No worries. Just be relaxed.” She escorted them to a soundstage with a couch facing one direction, and a leather armchair angled catty-corner toward it. She pointed to the couch and asked them to sit. The PAs fitted them with microphones as Thomas Ryland, anchor of a popular TSN show, came over to shake their hands. He settled into his own chair and fiddled with his notes. The director announced they were rolling and Ilya took Shane’s hand in his and squeezed. “Good evening everyone. I’m here with NHL superstars Ilya Rozanov of the Ottawa Centaurs, formerly with the Boston Bears; and Shane Hollander, also an Ottowa Centaur as of a month ago, formerly of the Montreal Voyageurs, for their first official interview since coming out as a couple last season. Gentlemen, we’re honored you took the time to be here with us.” “Thank you for having us,” Shane replied on cue. “You can understand that the news that two world-famous rivals were actually in a secret relationship for years is both shocking and of great interest to many people. Can you tell us what it’s been like the last several months, being out as active LGBT players, being out as a couple, and now being on the same team?” Shane huffed out a big breath. “Wow, those are complicated questions. On the one hand, it’s such a relief not to hide anymore. It was so stressful every day, worrying who could find out and how, and what would happen then. But also, just like we feared, it has led to a lot of gossip and recrimination, and invasions of our privacy. And then again, so many people, especially young people, have reached out to us, telling their stories, and saying we gave them courage to come out to their teams, their schools, their parents. So it’s a mixed bag.” Ilya added, “I can say that playing on the same team is wonderful. The Centaurs are made of the best people in the league. Everyone loves us and accepts us and knows that for us, there is nothing more serious than playing hockey and winning. We have never brought personal feelings to the ice and we still don’t now.” Shane smiled. “It’s also a big plus to see each other every day. To live together. The hockey season was always hard on us. We were really limited in the time we could spend together. On the whole I’d say there are way more positives than negatives to being out.” Ryland nodded seriously, as if they were discussing world peace instead of hockey. “Probably the biggest question on everyone’s mind is, exactly how long has this been going on? At what point did an epic rivalry turn into an epic love story?” Ilya turned to Shane, and they smiled softly at each other. They had debated how honest to be in this interview and ultimately had decided there was no benefit to avoiding the truth. “Well,” Shane said slowly, “that’s not a simple question. But in the end, the answer is that we’ve been together for about eleven years.” Ryland had trouble masking his surprise. As if to verify he had heard correctly, he asked, “Eleven years?” “Yes,” Ilya said with a hint of humor in his voice, “since before our rookie season. We met for the first time at the World Junior Championship in Saskatchewan. We started a casual relationship afterward that lasted for many years.” Ryland was clearly gobsmacked but put on his professional reporter face and cleared his throat. “I imagine people are wondering how that worked. Ilya, you were in Boston, and Shane was in Montreal. The hockey season lasts nine months a year including training and playoffs. When did you see each other, and how did you keep it a secret?” Shane answered, “We saw each other rarely, which is one of the reasons it was casual for so long. We were afraid for anyone to know precisely because of the famous rivalry. And also,

“‘When will we get a chance again?’ Shane asked. And, so help him, in that moment Ilya wanted to tell him he would stay with him. “Nervous? But you’ve done hockey camps like this before haven’t you?” “It’s not the hockey camp, I’m excited for that. I’m nervous about the whole staying at Shane and Rozanov’s house thing.” “Why?” his husband asks turning his head briefly to look at Scott with a furrowed brow. “Because I don’t know either of them that well even though we went to their wedding. Them being together at all is still a little weird to me. It’s like they’re letting me into their super-secret love nest or something.” Or the one where Scott stays at Shane & Ilya's while coaching the Ottawa hockey camp.

After another devastating loss for the Ottawa Centaurs, Shane chooses Ilya as the forfeit for the winner's room. Which would be fine if it weren’t for Ottawa's policy that everyone, even the captain, has to be supervised to make sure nothing gets out of hand.

Shane is on nurse duty after Ilya's macho stunts Shane was holding Ilya's face still with his left hand while he used a gauze soaked in iodine to attend the cut on his husband's cheek with his other hand. His husband was lucky the cheekbone wasn't broken or splintered. However, Ilya seemed more mad about the fact that a Montreal player had hit him first than about the ijury itself. "Fucking Comeau" his husband mumbled. Shane flinched. Gilbert Comeau was one of the few Montreal players he had considered a friend during his time with the Voyageurs, but then he had turned his back on Shane the moment they'd been outed. Shane had even sent him an invitation to the wedding, but Gilbert hadn't bothered attending. It still stung, being let down so spectacularly but so many people that had been in close proximity to him for over ten years, but it was what it was and Shane was at peace with how things had went down. After all, he had Ilya forever. It's been almost three years since Shane had married the love of his life and had been drafted by Ottawa. During that time, the only other Montreal player -besides Hayden and J. J., his actual friends- who had reached out to him to apologize and sort of try to reconnect had been Patrice Drapeau. Not that they had been particularly close during their time on the same team, but it was nice to stand in a good place with one another. "You should drop it" he commented. Ilya grumbled before saying "I do not know what you are accusing me of" and crossing his arms. Shane took a step back to stare at his husband sitting on the border of the bathtub on their en- suite bathroom with his legs spread to make place for him. Ilya had taken a stick to the face and because of it he had gotten a nasty cut and a rainbow of reds, purples, and blacks on the left side of his face. Despite having been treated right away by their medical staff, Shane like taking care of his man at home. He was kinda worried about how red the sclera of the eye on that side had gotten, though. "Oh, really? So you don't have a personal vendetta against Montreal? I must be imagining things, then" Shane discarded the used gauze and picked a new, clean one. "Vendetta is-" "-putting it lightly?" he iterrupted "You got the whole team on board, Ilya" "Moy-" "I hate how things happened too, baby" he was back into his former position between Ilya's legs holding his face up "But it's in the past. And we're together now, all the time" he kissed his husband on the forehead "And we're the current Stanley Cup Champions. You need to let it go" "They do not deserve my let go" Ilya put his hands on Shane's hips, staring right up at him "I know you can fight your battles, Shane, but I want to fight those assholes for you" Shane walked away from Ilya once more, this time to grab the ointment their doctor had suggested from the cabinet. "Besides, is not like you can say you do not find it hot" Shane groaned and hit his head against the cabinet, repeatedly. He couldn't even argue with that: against his better judgment, he did find Ilya's macho stunts hot. "Hot or not" he stood looking at his husband with his hands on his hips, trying to go for a stern looking pose from across the bathroom "You've got to stop. It's not worth it" Ilya sighed. "Okay, I will not pick up more fights with them" "Make sure to pass that same massage to the others" Shane got in front of his husband again and statred carefully apllying the ointment "And text Hayden to apologize, he didn't deserve that right hook" "It was not for him! I already told him!" Ilya protested. ~~ The following day Ilya did facetime Hayden to apologize. After all, he was his husband's bestfriend and their nieces & nephew's father; and, no matter how much he and Ilya didn't exactly get along most of the time, he had been a good friend to both Shane and himself all this time. He only wished that not every one of his actions would be dissected and analyzed as part of his sexuality by the media. Ilya missed a pass from Shane? Marital problems. Shane skipped a game for a minor injury? Headed to divorce. Ilya got into a fight? Shane was going to leave him for that. And now that he had (accidentally!) hit his husband's besfriend square on the jaw... "Rumor has it that Rozanov not only has never forgiven Pike's incident with that infamous fanvideo from a couple of years ago," stated the sports commentator on the TV "but he also is extremely jealous of his husband's close relationship with his former teammate and long- time friend from the Voyageurs. This comment has been going around for quite a while so it's hard to not think about the possibility of Hollander having been involved with Pi-"
