[“YouTube,” Shane says suspiciously as he opens the text and eyes the link. “They have porn on YouTube now?” “’Now’,” Ilya echoes fondly, shaking his head. “Just open it.” Shane gives him one last dubious look before clicking the link to see… “'Shane Hollander Spitting Compilation',” he reads out incredulously. “'2010 to 2014’, what the fuck?” ] OR, Ilya sends Shane a link to something Shane totally isn't into. Definitely not. Probably. ...maybe he should research just to be sure.

Our Captain, Their Problem by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-11
Ilya Rozanov has a "tiny car accident" (his words). Shane Hollander has a full-scale, system-shutdown panic attack about it. Meanwhile, a horrified Hayden is praying for someone to throw him in a lake and tell him that this is all just a big joke, or maybe for a meteor strike; he is really not picky. J.J., on the other hand, is trying to bleach the image of his sweet captain making out with Ilya fucking Rozanov from his brain.
It's a very normal day for the Montreal Voyageurs.

He had been thinking about it. Coming out, sharing his relationship with Ilya with the world. It scared him to no end, especially after Crowell had so blatantly voiced his disapproval. After all, with his position in the NHL, he could make Shane's life miserable. He was starting to wonder, though, if it was worth it for Ilya. Shane is at a sports bar in Tampa when people at his table start talking shit about Ilya. It becomes impossible to keep his mouth shut. Or, an alternative retelling of how Hayden finds out. Shane never really got the point of going out after a game, and he certainly didn’t understand going out with players from the opposing team. Still, he somehow found himself at some sports bar in Tampa, seated around a table with Hayden, J.J., and what felt like half of Tampa Thunder. It was actually just three of them, one of whom J.J. knew from junior hockey. Or something. “—and I swear we just got her to sleep through the night.” Brandon Wheeler, one of the Tampa players, rubbed a hand over his face. “And then suddenly she just started waking up again at 5 A.M.” Hayden winced. “That time’s really rough. Have you tried a white noise machine?” “Darla’s sister keeps suggesting it, so I guess we should.” Shane tried hard to keep a polite expression on his face. Sitting in a sports bar in Tampa talking about babies wasn’t really his idea of a good time. His idea of a good time was to go to the hotel and nap. Or FaceTime Ilya, but Ilya was occupied at the moment. Shane’s eyes flicked unbidden to the game on the TV. The Centaurs were playing at home against the Admirals and, by some miracle, they had yet to concede a goal. They hadn’t scored one either, but they weren’t losing. Ilya popped up in frame, mouthing off to Scott Hunter who rolled his eyes at him, and by now Shane was familiar enough with this dynamic to bite back a laugh. He watched his boyfriend on the screen, surrounded by people who had no idea. He wasn’t the only one watching the game, though, and one of the other Tampa players scoffed loudly. Andy Something-or-other. “Rozanov is such a fucking scumbag,” he spat, turning away from the game again. “I hate playing against that guy, he pisses me off.” J.J. snorted into his beer. “Is there anyone Rozanov doesn’t piss off?” Feeling his shoulders tense, Shane forced himself to reach out for his ginger ale and take a slow sip. It wasn’t the first time he’d found himself roped into similar conversations, but it was his absolute least favorite situation to be in. He hated hearing people who knew nothing about Ilya tear him to pieces. It was one thing when people said bad things about Shane, but there was something so fucked up about listening to people dig into the person he loved most in the world. “Oh, yeah, I guess you’d know better than anyone,” Brandon said, gesturing at Shane with a laugh. “That guy’s been in your face being annoying for years. Don’t know how you haven’t punched the daylights out of him.” Shane just shrugged, not finding it in him to agree with it. A few years ago, he’d have played along a little, just half-hearted insults and laughs, but he was fed up with all of it. “Shane’s a saint,” Hayden said, clapping him on the shoulder. “He wouldn’t punch the worst person you could think of, probably.” Shane rather wanted to punch Andy, actually. There was something about his face. Of course, Ilya Rozanov had impeccable timing and chose that moment to score. Shane sucked in a breath because it was a fucking cool one too, and he watched as Ilya pumped his arms over his head, skated over and crowed in Scott’s face before being engulfed by his team. They zoomed in his beaming face and Shane had to press his lips together to not smile along with him. Everyone else around the table groaned and the goal with the ensuing celebration added fuel to the fire. “I hear he’s honestly fucking disgusting,” Andy said. “Has like three women going and none of them know they’re the sidepiece.” Shane should honestly just laugh. Because it was so obviously stupid and made up shit. But he didn’t want to laugh. He actually kind of wanted to cry because it was so unfair. If they were out, they wouldn’t be saying this. If they were out, he could defend Ilya freely. In the back of his head, he knew they would just say something else. Would say he was cheating on Shane, probably. And still, the anger was building inside him. Brandon nodded at his teammate. “It’s people like him that give the rest of us a bad reputation. Everyone assuming we all cheat on our wives, like we’re all complete animals.” “Yeah, fuck, it’s so annoying,” Hayden said. “I get that shit all the time.” The third Tampa player finally chimed in as Shane was quietly planning his escape. “Probably has a bunch of kids everywhere. They’ll be their own hockey team in like 20 years.” Everyone else laughed at that. Obnoxiously loudly, like it was the funniest thing any of them had ever heard. Something snapped in him, something he’d been holding together with the force of his will and the clench of his teeth. Maybe it was the implication that Ilya would be a shitty dad that finally broke every single resolve. “He’s actually a good guy,” Shane said quietly, but the whole table fell silent for a moment. J.J. looked at him with his eyebrows raised, and the Tampa players still had signs of laughter in their expressions. “You’ve been enemies for like a decade,” Brandon said. “What do you mean, good guy?” “Rivals,” Shane corrected, his hands twisting in his lap. “And yeah, almost a decade. So I know him better than you, then, don’t I? And Rozanov isn’t just whatever you see on the ice or hear from the rumour mill.” “Alright, relax?” Brandon laughed, dismissive.

“He looks so happy,” Jackie said, joining him at the railing. She rested her head against his shoulder, wrapped an arm around his waist. “It’s really nice to see.” “Yeah, it really is,” Hayden said. He sighed heavily. “Fuck. I’m gonna have to start liking Ilya Rozanov, aren’t I?” Jackie giggled, rubbing his back in a placating manner. “I’m afraid so, babe.” OR 5 times Hayden started understanding Shane and Ilya's relationship, and the 1 time he finally told Shane he did.

Shane is on nurse duty after Ilya's macho stunts Shane was holding Ilya's face still with his left hand while he used a gauze soaked in iodine to attend the cut on his husband's cheek with his other hand. His husband was lucky the cheekbone wasn't broken or splintered. However, Ilya seemed more mad about the fact that a Montreal player had hit him first than about the ijury itself. "Fucking Comeau" his husband mumbled. Shane flinched. Gilbert Comeau was one of the few Montreal players he had considered a friend during his time with the Voyageurs, but then he had turned his back on Shane the moment they'd been outed. Shane had even sent him an invitation to the wedding, but Gilbert hadn't bothered attending. It still stung, being let down so spectacularly but so many people that had been in close proximity to him for over ten years, but it was what it was and Shane was at peace with how things had went down. After all, he had Ilya forever. It's been almost three years since Shane had married the love of his life and had been drafted by Ottawa. During that time, the only other Montreal player -besides Hayden and J. J., his actual friends- who had reached out to him to apologize and sort of try to reconnect had been Patrice Drapeau. Not that they had been particularly close during their time on the same team, but it was nice to stand in a good place with one another. "You should drop it" he commented. Ilya grumbled before saying "I do not know what you are accusing me of" and crossing his arms. Shane took a step back to stare at his husband sitting on the border of the bathtub on their en- suite bathroom with his legs spread to make place for him. Ilya had taken a stick to the face and because of it he had gotten a nasty cut and a rainbow of reds, purples, and blacks on the left side of his face. Despite having been treated right away by their medical staff, Shane like taking care of his man at home. He was kinda worried about how red the sclera of the eye on that side had gotten, though. "Oh, really? So you don't have a personal vendetta against Montreal? I must be imagining things, then" Shane discarded the used gauze and picked a new, clean one. "Vendetta is-" "-putting it lightly?" he iterrupted "You got the whole team on board, Ilya" "Moy-" "I hate how things happened too, baby" he was back into his former position between Ilya's legs holding his face up "But it's in the past. And we're together now, all the time" he kissed his husband on the forehead "And we're the current Stanley Cup Champions. You need to let it go" "They do not deserve my let go" Ilya put his hands on Shane's hips, staring right up at him "I know you can fight your battles, Shane, but I want to fight those assholes for you" Shane walked away from Ilya once more, this time to grab the ointment their doctor had suggested from the cabinet. "Besides, is not like you can say you do not find it hot" Shane groaned and hit his head against the cabinet, repeatedly. He couldn't even argue with that: against his better judgment, he did find Ilya's macho stunts hot. "Hot or not" he stood looking at his husband with his hands on his hips, trying to go for a stern looking pose from across the bathroom "You've got to stop. It's not worth it" Ilya sighed. "Okay, I will not pick up more fights with them" "Make sure to pass that same massage to the others" Shane got in front of his husband again and statred carefully apllying the ointment "And text Hayden to apologize, he didn't deserve that right hook" "It was not for him! I already told him!" Ilya protested. ~~ The following day Ilya did facetime Hayden to apologize. After all, he was his husband's bestfriend and their nieces & nephew's father; and, no matter how much he and Ilya didn't exactly get along most of the time, he had been a good friend to both Shane and himself all this time. He only wished that not every one of his actions would be dissected and analyzed as part of his sexuality by the media. Ilya missed a pass from Shane? Marital problems. Shane skipped a game for a minor injury? Headed to divorce. Ilya got into a fight? Shane was going to leave him for that. And now that he had (accidentally!) hit his husband's besfriend square on the jaw... "Rumor has it that Rozanov not only has never forgiven Pike's incident with that infamous fanvideo from a couple of years ago," stated the sports commentator on the TV "but he also is extremely jealous of his husband's close relationship with his former teammate and long- time friend from the Voyageurs. This comment has been going around for quite a while so it's hard to not think about the possibility of Hollander having been involved with Pi-"
