Shane regretted keeping his observations to himself because Ilya, pale and sweating after putting on his gear, basically collapsed on the ice. He was filled with dread, disappointment, and self-loathing the entire ambulance ride to the hospital. He allowed the love of his life— his other half—to wave off his pain to avoid an argument. Or Ilya Rozanov has an appendectomy.

He just did not realise it would involve grocery store emergencies, Russian melodrama, world's worst meals, and a fever so high it nearly stops his heart.

Winter 2019: Shane’s bye week lasts about twelve seconds before it turns into fever-fuelled melodrama and 1,187 unread messages ranging from “I’m dying” to “your backhand was trash.” Ilya loses a game, hides in an airport alcove, and goes full worried boyfriend, praying to get to Shane as quickly as humanly possible, and counting the kilometres from Ottawa to Montreal while keeping it quiet from the team. Then it’s Nurse Ilya time: cool cloths, small sips, soft Russian endearments, and the clingiest naps known to man until the fever finally breaks and they know it's going to be okay.

"You're supposed to smoke over there." Someone said from behind Ilya. Ilya almost dropped his cigarette. His English was shitty, but he had studied that sentence enough times over the years to understand it immediately. He didn't even think about his words much anymore, but it was impossible to avoid them. He turned instinctively, and was face to face with Shane fucking Hollander. Out of almost seven billion people, of course Ilya's soulmate had to be his fated rival. It was almost poetic. Still, Ilya had enough sense to realize just how bad this was. or, Shane says Ilya's soulmate words. Ilya vows to never speak a word to him to keep him from finding out. They fall in love anyway.

The breath that Shane expels feels like the last straw. Ilya is so fucking tired of guessing. Wondering what he did wrong and how he can make it right. A pit forms in his stomach every time Shane looks at him like that. Like he’s done. Like he’s tired. Like he’s one stupid comment away from kicking Ilya out entirely. It’s not what Ilya should feel when in proximity to his husband. This shaken, tense situation is beyond fucked. Maybe it makes him a child that he hasn’t asked Shane point blank what is going on yet. Maybe it makes him a coward. Shane and Ilya spend a tense evening together.

With shaking hands, Shane unlocked his phone and dared to click on the article SportsCenter already posted. There wasn't more information than what Shane had just seen, but the article already featured a photo. Ilya lying motionless on a stretcher, some of his teammates trying to cover him while being taken away. But what was really getting to him, was the blood on the ice. He hastily locked his phone again, not being able to stare at this picture any longer. Fuck. He really needed to see Ilya. or: Shane has to watch Ilya get injured during a game and faces the difficutlies of a secret relationship in the meantime

“Hey, Hollander, did you see the news about Rozanov?” Shane’s head snaps up and he almost gives himself whiplash. It’s deja vu, and it throws him back to that moment last season when Ilya’s father passed and he went MIA. His teammates had speculated, but Shane had known the truth – Ilya’s father had passed and he’d flown back to Russia to take care of family matters. “No?” He states simply, because he doesn’t trust his tongue to not betray him. What could Ilya possibly have done that would get him on the news? A phone is passed over, and Shane squints against the light and the tiny font of the news article. In big, bold letters the title reads ‘HOCKEY STAR ILYA ROZANOV SEVERELY INJURED IN CAR CRASH.’ It’s accompanied by a generic picture from the Boston news channel, but Shane doesn’t scroll down any further. He can’t. He doesn’t think his brain is capable of any thoughts currently. The phone drops out of his shaking hand and he realizes belatedly that tears are blurring his vision. “I gotta go.” --- OR, Ilya is in a car accident. Shane hurries to be by his side, and outs them in the process. Set during the year Ilya is playing for Boston.

Shane distantly registers that he is having a panic attack. But that doesn’t make sense, isn’t his chest moving? His heart beating? Then why can’t he breathe? It is probably because his breath is somewhere out there in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Soulmates (or Shane and Ilya winning the Love Game) by Justaromanticfool
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2025-10-05
He knew it stung Ilya, people not understanding. It stung him too. Because to Shane, loving Ilya was like breathing and also like standing on solid ground after years of drifting. It flooded him and steadied him at the same time. It hurt, knowing the world reduced them to a rivalry, a strange story, a piece of scandalous gossip when what they had was so much more. He wanted to be by Ilya’s side for everything, the mundane, the bright and the hard. And maybe not everyone who was in love felt like this, so overwhelmed and so steadied all at once. But Shane did. And if love was a contest, well… he is the winner. Best couple. Number one. Most epic love story ever. Or 4 times Shane told people him and Ilya were practically soulmates and the 1 time the universe told him.

Shane thought about it, a lot more than he should've. And it showed. It showed in the way he'd begged Ilya to sell his Ducati the summer they got married. It showed in the number of times he'd had to calm his racing mind when Ilya took twenty minutes longer than expected at the grocery store. It showed in his heaving breaths, now. He was sitting up in his bed, his husband sleeping peacefully next to him, and he felt like he was on the edge of a panic attack. The plane didn't crash, and Ilya didn't die. Shane still feels the aftershocks.
