Ilya’s spent his whole life hiding. Now he wants to go to Pride — their first as a married couple, in their new city, with their new team. Shane’s spent his whole career being careful, being quiet, being private about everything that matters. But maybe it’s time to stop being so fucking careful. (or the one where Ilya buys too many flags, the team shows up in matching shirts, and Shane learns what it feels like to be proud.) The humidity hits Shane the moment he steps out onto the back deck, coffee mug warm in his hand despite the August heat. Inside, Ilya is singing along to something in Russian — badly, enthusiastically, the way he does everything these days. The way he’s been doing everything since they got married, since Shane signed with Ottawa, since their whole fucking lives became this impossible thing Shane still can’t quite believe is real. “You are going to burn,” Ilya calls from inside, not even looking. Somehow he always knows when Shane’s outside without sunscreen. “It’s eight in the morning.” “Sun does not care about time.” The screen door slides open and Ilya emerges, shirtless, holding his own coffee and what Shane now recognizes as the industrial-sized bottle of sunscreen they bought at Costco last week. “Also, we have practice in two hours and I am not listening to you complain about sunburn through bag skate.” Shane takes the sunscreen because arguing is pointless. Ilya’s already rubbing it into his shoulders before Shane can even open the cap himself. “You’re very nurturing this morning,” Shane says. “I am keeping my husband alive. Is different.” But Ilya’s hands are gentle, thorough, spreading sunscreen across Shane’s neck, behind his ears, down his arms. “Also, I need to ask you something.” “That sounds ominous.” “Is not ominous.” Ilya moves around to face him, blocking out the sun. His eyes are very blue this morning, the way they get when he’s scheming. “Is fun thing. You like fun.” “I’m immediately suspicious.” “Shane.” Ilya’s hands land on his hips, thumbs hooking into the waistband of Shane’s shorts. “Capital Pride is next weekend.” Shane’s stomach does something complicated. “Okay.” “I want us to go.” The deck is suddenly very quiet except for the sound of someone’s lawn mower three houses down. Shane takes a sip of coffee, buying time. “To Pride.” “Yes, to Pride. In Ottawa. Our city now.” Ilya’s face is open, hopeful, and fuck, Shane knows where this is going. “I have never been to Pride. Not as myself. Not as-” He gestures between them. “As this.” Shane’s chest tightens. “I know.” “In Russia, I could not even-” Ilya stops, swallows. “I could not even think about it, you know? Not just illegal, but dangerous. And then in Boston, I was not ready. Was not out. Was hiding everything.” His hands squeeze Shane’s hips. “But now I am here. With you. And I am married to you. And I can—I want to be there. I want to see it.” “Ilya-” “You do not want to go.” It’s not a question. Ilya’s face does something complicated, shuttering slightly. “That’s not what I said.” “But is what you think.” Shane sets his coffee down on the deck railing, carefully. “I just—it’s going to be a lot. Media will be there. Everyone will-” “Everyone already knows we are married,” Ilya interrupts. “We did not hide this. You signed with Ottawa, everyone knows why. Is not secret.” “I know it’s not a secret.” Shane runs a hand through his hair, frustrated with himself, with how he can’t seem to just be as brave as Ilya makes it look. “I’m just—I’m not good at this stuff. The public thing. The-” “The being proud of us thing?” “That’s not fair.” Ilya’s expression softens. He steps closer, cups Shane’s face in both hands. “Moya lyubov. I am not trying to be unfair. I am trying to-” He pauses, searching for words. “I spent my whole life being afraid. Hiding. Pretending. And now I do not want to do this anymore. I want to go to Pride with my husband. I want to hold your hand in public and not be scared. I want to-” His voice cracks slightly. “I want to exist, okay? As myself. As bisexual man. As married man. As Ilya Rozanov who loves Shane Hollander more than anything.” Shane’s throat is tight. “Fuck.” “Is good fuck or bad fuck?” “Good fuck.” Shane pulls Ilya closer, wraps his arms around him. “Always good fuck when you do the romantic speech thing.” Ilya laughs against his shoulder. “So you will come?” “Of course I’ll come, you manipulative asshole.” “I am not manipulative. I am persuasive. Is different.” “You’re both.”

Five and a Half Beers and Just as Many Chalupas by Erisenyo
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-11-30
Hollander as an opponent has always been focused and precise and an absolute nightmare for a defenseman, the kind of player you dread facing. Hollander as a teammate is…well, he’s still focused and precise, and intense about every drill and lift and film session to the point of being more than a little intimidating. Hollander on five-and-a-half beers and just as many chalupas is something else entirely. OR, The Centaurs get to know Shane Hollander.

Smacking a kiss onto Shane's cheek like he did after the All-Stars, Ilya grins in challenge. Shane's not taken off his helmet yet, so the angle was awkward, but when he glances nervously at the team around them no one seems judging, so he smiles shyly. Ilya's open affection is a lot to get used to. Even after a while with this team, he still fears they'll react badly, but they never do. In fact, their team members seem elated. "You tell him, Captain!" Bood laughs. "We should hang a banner. Danger: Beware of Ilya Rozanov's husband." "Why do you get a victory kiss and we don't, Roz?" Troy calls teasingly. --- Or, the one in which Hollzy gets kisses.

just a fic about them being cute shane and Ilya had now been married for six months and playing together for five. They loved every second of it, the games, the chirping, the shared hotel rooms that somehow always ended with one of them stealing the other’s pillow. It felt like making up for all the years they’d wasted pretending they weren’t in love. Ilya adored it. He could finally hold Shane’s hand in public, talk about him in interviews, and say things like “my husband” without flinching. But there was still that tiny voice at the back of his head whispering hide. For Shane, that voice was more like a full marching band. He was getting better, though. Slowly. He didn’t flinch when Ilya grabbed his hand anymore. He only scowled a littlewhen Ilya kissed his cheek in front of teammates. But still, the world hadn’t quite caught up with them. The media preferred to call them rivals instead of married. And the ones who did acknowledge it seemed to dissect their every move like scientists studying penguin mating rituals. Shane hated it. He’d blocked every gossip account within a ten-mile radius. He didn’t see why two hockey players being in love needed to be news. Meanwhile, Ilya lived on the side of social media where people posted fan art, heart emojis, and wrote essays about how they’d “saved hockey.” He saw the good. He wanted to give them more. Shane wanted to crawl into the nearest rink freezer and hide. Still, there were always haters, the “keep hockey straight” crowd. Shane ignored them. Ilya pretended to, but sometimes the comments still stung. They were walking hand in hand with Anya before a game, their ritual, talking about their six-month anniversary plans. Ilya was thrilled. Shane was nervous. “I have it all planned out,” Ilya announced, beaming. Shane side-eyed him. “That’s… not reassuring.” “Ah, moya lyubov, is surprise,” Ilya smirked. “That’s even less reassuring.” Before Ilya could retort, a group of young hockey bros spotted them. “Rozanov! Hollander!” Shane’s shoulders tensed immediately. The guys came over, grinning, phones ready. “Can we get a photo?” Ilya glanced at his husband, who smiled a little too tightly and nodded. Ilya squeezed his hand. “Of course.” They posed, smiled, said polite goodbyes. The fans walked away, but Shane caught the sideways look at their intertwined hands. His stomach twisted. “Come, let’s go home,” Ilya said softly, tugging his hand. He didn’t add before I commit a murder with a hockey stick. At home, Shane started packing their gear while Ilya made lunch and fed Anya. His phone buzzed. It was Harris. Harris: hey, ilya. hate to do this, but you said you wanted to know when stuff popped up. might wanna see this. Attached was a photo of them from earlier — smiling, holding hands. Cute. Except the caption read: “Guess they’re still trying to make their ‘relationship’ look normal.” Ilya stared at it for a full ten seconds before muttering something in Russian that probably shouldn’t be translated. Ilya: thank you, Harris. will hide from Shane. Ilya: why can’t they just accept us? Harris: they’re idiots. don’t let it get to you. Ilya: I don’t. it’s Shane I worry about. He sighed, shoved his phone away, and went back to making lunch. Halfway through, Shane wandered in and they got… distracted. In the way that leads to being late for warm-ups. By the time Shane’s phone alarm went off, they were both breathless and tangled on the couch. “...worth it,” Ilya panted. “Completely unprofessional,” Shane muttered, buttoning his shirt. “But yes.” As they drove to the rink, Shane scrolled through the Centaurs group chat, laughing at the chaos. He didn’t mention the photo. But something in him had snapped when he saw it. He was tired. Tired of pretending, tired of being polite, tired of hiding behind “no comment.” So when they arrived, Shane turned to Ilya, grabbed his jersey, and kissed him. Hard. Long enough that when they pulled away, another car had pulled up beside them. Bood leaned out his window, smirking. “Damn, your relationship gets questioned and suddenly you two go full rom-com in the parking lot.” Shane’s face went red. “They have to see what they’re missing out on,” he shot back, to the utter shock of both Bood and Ilya. Ilya blinked. “Who are you and what have you done with my husband?” Inside, Bood elbowed Evan. “Hollander’s snapped. Love finally broke him.” During warm-ups, Shane skated next to Ilya, watching him laugh. Why had he kept the two halves of his life separate for so long? Maybe the point wasn’t to prove love and hockey could coexist, maybe it was to just live it. Then Ilya’s hair came loose from under his helmet. Shane, without thinking, pulled off his glove and fixed it. The look Ilya gave him was somewhere between shock and heart eyes. They won 2–1. Both scored. Of course.

“Go away,” Ilya said, his voice muffled by something. Shane would bend space and time to give Ilya anything, but he would not grant him this. Instead, he pushed the door open, his heart breaking at the sight of Ilya in his massive bed, somehow looking tiny beneath the covers. “Ilya,” he said, the name escaping like an exhale. He had so much to say. So many things that needed fixing. So many apologies he owed him. “Shane, please-“ “I’ll go.” “Yes. Thank you.” “No - not… not to Montreal. To the party. If you’ll still have me.“ OR Shane attends Boodram’s Boxing Day Party. This is how it goes.

Ilya let himself soften into it. He’d missed this, the simple camaraderie between teammates. He did feel lonely, but in some ways he felt safer with this team, and Shane had given him that, it was because of Shane that he moved to Ottawa. All the good things in his life curved back to Shane. Looking around, he tried to imagine him here, not Shane Hollander the hockey player, but his Shane, the man who made the darkest rooms feel like home. He felt suddenly certain that they would welcome him with love and respect. And, God help him, he was still hoping like an idiot that Shane would walk through the door. Ilya tightened his grip on his roasting stick, jaw set, trying to divert his thoughts back to the present, when a ripple went through the group. Conversation dipped, then stopped completely. “Um… what the fuck,” Dillon muttered, eyes flicking toward the house. “Is that Shane Hollander?” Or Shane decides to go get his man after seeing Ilya’s instagram post in Chap.23 of TLG.

“So.” Shane started, he huffed a shy little laugh and found it odd, why was he being this way? “Sooo?” Ilya drawled and began to saunter over to his husband. Shane took a step back when Ilya neared him. Ilya didn’t stop, and Shane ended up pressed against the door. “How exhausted are you?” Ilya asked, and Shane noticed the tell-tale smirk. “Not at all. You?” Ilya shook his head in response, “Nope.” His hands slid up the door, caging Shane in, which made him swallow thickly. “I want to make love to you tonight, Hollander.” Shane’s entire body buzzed with anticipation and joy. “But first…do you want more cake?” Shane swooped in to kiss him, because he just needed to, or else he’d burst, “Yes. Cake. Then come ravage me.”

A post-workout quickie makes them late for team dinner. Ilya’s fine. Shane is glowing. So is their server—who apparently didn’t get the memo that Shane is very, very taken. They were fifteen minutes late to team dinner. Technically, it wasn’t Ilya’s fault. Not really. Sure, Shane had been the one doing his usual post-skate stretch in their home gym—but those tiny, low-slung shorts, the ones that cupped his ass like they were tailored by the gods? That had been entirely premeditated. Shane had definitely been showing off. Ilya, being a good husband, had responded in kind. One thing led to another—specifically, Shane on his back next to a rack of dumbbells—and then a not-at-all quick shower followed. So yes. They were late. Shane was stressed. But he also had that flushed, post-orgasm glow that made Ilya want to drag him right back home again. They arrived at the restaurant slightly breathless, hand-in-hand. The rest of the Centaurs were already seated, drinks in hand, and Bood was the first to comment. “Well, well. We thought you two weren’t gonna make it. You’ve got… a glow.” Shane turned a deep shade of red. Ilya just smirked. But the smirk faded fast. Because as they scanned the long table, they realized something was off. There weren’t any seats left beside each other. The team always saved them two spots together. Always. Shane hesitated, subtle panic flashing across his face. He didn’t like being late. He didn’t like being separated. He definitely didn’t like the uncertainty of having to choose a new seat mid- social interaction. Wyatt, across from them, was already halfway to his feet. “I can move.” Ilya started to wave him off. “No, no. It’s fine. We’re capable of sitting apart,” he said with mock dramatics, shooting Shane a teasing look. “Even if my husband is boring without me.” Shane gave him a annoyed look. He ended up sliding into the open seat between Wyatt and Troy. Ilya took a spot a few chairs down between Dykstra and Bood, not thrilled, but willing to play it cool. Until the server arrived. He was young. Polished. Friendly. And apparently unaware that Shane Hollander was both married and extremely taken. Ilya watched with narrowed eyes as the guy lingered a little too long when taking Shane’s drink order, smiling a little too widely, his hand resting just a little too casually on the back of Shane’s chair. Shane, being Shane, was utterly oblivious. “Could I get a root beer?” Shane asked, polite as ever. “Absolutely,” the server replied, voice warm. “And if you think of anything else you want… just let me know. Anything at all.” He winked at Shane. Ilya blinked. Dykstra choked on his water. Shane didn’t even flinch, already turning to ask Wyatt something about the appetizer menu. By the time the server returned for entrée orders, the energy was unmistakable. He leaned toward Shane again. “Still deciding?” the server asked, voice dropping into something close to a purr. He leaned in, eyes fixed on Shane. “No pressure. Take all the time you need. I’m not going anywhere.” He muttered—slow, deliberate. “Unless you want me to.” Shane smiled politely, completely unaware. “I’ll have the salmon, please.” The server jotted it down, but didn’t move right away—his gaze lingered just a second too long before he finally turned and walked off. Wyatt shot Ilya a look across the table. Bood looked like he was trying not to laugh. Even Troy glanced at Ilya and mouthed, Yikes. Ilya stood up. “Wyatt,” he said calmly, “trade seats with me.” Wyatt didn’t even hesitate. As Ilya made his way around the table, the conversations quieted just a bit. Not a lot. Just enough. Ilya slid into the seat next to Shane, reached under the table to pull Shane’s chair closer, and laced their fingers together on the tabletop for everyone—including their overly friendly server—to see. Shane blinked down at their joined hands, then looked at Ilya. “What’s going on?” Troy snorted. “Apparently you’ve been getting flirted with all night. Looks like Ilya is staking his claims.” Shane’s eyes widened. “What? No, he was just being nice.” “He was offering you his entire night,” Ilya muttered, glaring in the direction the server had gone.

Alone in his room, Ilya smiled. Not the public-facing smirk he used as a mask in daily conversation, not the silly slant he offered teammates and staff. No, this was a real, big goofy smile. A smile he’d unconsciously tucked away for months, maybe even years. It almost felt foreign to smile this big. He needed to call Shane. With a sigh, Shane set his book on the nightstand. He couldn’t focus on it at all, so he might at least try to sleep. After checking his phone—no texts from his fiancé—and turning off the light, he laid down to sleep. About five minutes later, his phone rang.

Shane and Ilya host a Halloween party the first year that Shane is a Centaur. Just them being in love and hanging out with the team. “Hollander. You can't go as a hockey player, you are a hockey player.” Ilya said with an eye roll when he walked in on his husband getting dressed in their bathroom. “First of all, I can go as whatever I want. There are no rules to Halloween. Second of all, I am not a hockey player. I am going as Ilya Rozanov.” Shane smirked before their eyes met in the mirror and Shane's smirk morphed into a genuine smile. He grabbed the Boston jersey that Ilya was just now noticing draped over the chair for the vanity. It had Ilya's old number on it, but instead of Rozanov on the back it said “Second Best Center.” “Shane Hollanov! Are you making a joke?! I thought you were boring. And you are making a joke.” Ilya was giddy with excitement. He loved playful Shane. “No.” Shane gave Ilya's cheek a kiss. “No joke. Just me, going as my husband, the second best center in the league.” Ilya moved away from Shane. If he continued to make physical contact he would not be able to get dressed and the team was going to start arriving at their house for the party soon. He grabbed his own costume, this year he was going as a detective. He liked being known as perceptive. “We will see who is second best. I am on the first line, captain and leading the league in overall points.” “Yes, well I have been on this team for four months and I am already the leading goal scorer. So, we’ll see who is second best at the end of the season.” They grinned at each other. When Shane joined Ottawa, Ilya had worried that being on the same team would mean they would have less opportunities to compete. They fell in love through competing, and he loved when they got to play against each other. He didn't want to lose that. But, he had worried for nothing. Turns out, being on the same team meant even more chances to compete. They scrimmaged against each other several times a week and battled it out in cardio and weight training. In fact, it's a good thing they had been practicing keeping hockey and their relationship separate for more than ten years, because there might be even more tension between them now that they were competing for the same ice time. Being married had not changed either of their drives to be the best. After they both finished dressing, and made their way downstairs, Shane turned towards Ilya with a glimmer of mischief in his eyes. “What, you're not going to post our picture to Instagram? You're always trying to get me to take photos with you. But now that I am in this awesome costume suddenly you don't want to? Worried your fans will agree that you're second best?” Oh. Now it was on. Ilya took two pictures, one of them together, facing the camera and smiling sweetly. And one of the back of Shane's jersey. He almost didn't want to post it because Shane's skater’s ass looked too good and he wanted to keep it for himself. But, there was a contest to win. He posted both pictures to Instagram with the caption “Who is second best?” He put the phone away and kissed his husband. They would let the fans fight it out while they enjoyed the party. After everyone had arrived, Ilya found himself dancing in the middle of the makeshift dance floor - surrounded by beautiful women, and his teammates who were also beautiful. He was maybe a bit high. It felt a lot like last year, but this time when he saw his teammates dancing with their partners, he didn't feel alone. He glanced up at his husband who was chatting with Harris and waved him over. Shane smiled shyly, said something to Harris and walked towards Ilya. “Hi.” Shane said when he folded himself into Ilya's arms. “Hi,” Ilya replied as he wrapped Shane in tightly. “We have danced together more in the four months since our wedding than in the ten years before. I like it.” Shane grinned at Ilya. “You just like touching me.” “Is nice” Ilya said as his hands moved down to Shane's ass. Shane slapped his hand away. “Not here!” He hissed. “Shane. No one is watching. It's fine.” Ilya's eyes glimmered with playful heat. “Nope. No way. We are out but not that out.” “Fine. Fine.” “Do you want to get some air? Someone started the fire pit.” Shane said. Ilya nodded and Shane grabbed his hand to guid them outside. _ When they got to the outdoor seating area surrounding the fire pit Shane noticed that there weren't any seats left. Lisa stood up and moved into Wyatt's lap and Ilya took her spot. Ilya gestured for Shane to sit on his lap but Shane was not sure about this. They were out, and they held hands in public. But sitting on each other's laps? That was a lot of PDA. Like a lot. But, this was their team. The Centaurs had been nothing but supportive. And if Lisa and Wyatt could do it, why couldn't they? Indecision must have been evident on his face because Bood spoke. “Roz, your husband won't sit on your lap? He thinks he will crush you?” Ilya scoffed and looked at Shane with love in his warm eyes but that crooked smile that always meant trouble had made an appearance. “Hollander is so small. Claims to be 5’10, He's almost as short as Barrett.” “I am 5’10! And I am not small. You guys are the worst. Ilya, why don't you sit on my lap.”
