  2. “Do what?” Shane replies, acting oblivious. He is on the floor of their bedroom, sort of contorting his body in a vague yoga pose that Ilya thinks means he's trying to stretch the pain away. “Do what?” Ilya repeats, completely monotone. “Where you act like you are superhuman! That your body is just a tool, and not a human body that may have issue!” or, shane bursts his appendix after a fight w/ ilya

  3. Troy Barrett comes to Ottawa wanting stability. He tells himself he wants the team, the routine, the structure, the safety of fitting in without needing too much from anyone. This is his clean start, and he needs to do whatever it takes to keep it.

What he finds instead is Shane Hollander, amazing perfect Shane Hollander, and the uncomfortable realisation that the thing he’s been trying hardest not to want might be the only thing that actually feels like what he needs.

As lines blur and tempers rise, Troy learns the hard way that wanting to belong can turn into wanting to keep, and that some things aren’t up for negotiation, especially when there’s a Russian captain who’s already decided what’s not on offer.

    or

“Hey, Ilya?” Troy asks, already regretting it. “I was actually going to ask you about someone.”

The moment he says Shane Hollander’s name, the locker room goes quiet, and Troy knows he’s crossed a line he didn’t fully understand.

Troy’s POV of the events best called ‘Ilya’s worst nightmare’

  4. After Russia crashes and burns at the Olympics, six months pass where Ilya cuts Shane out completely, refusing to answer his texts. So when they both get booked for yet another ad campaign, Shane arrives on set with a strict plan to ignore Ilya entirely. But then he learns the premise of the entire campaign: making fun of Ilya’s English. It will take a lot for Shane to forgive him, sure. It won’t take nearly as much for Shane to stand up for him.

  5. “Ilya,” he whispers. “I want this. I want to know when you’re hurting and when things are hard, because I want you. I want you when you’re sad, and lonely, and messy-“

“-you hate mess,” Ilya teases, drawing a hard-earned smile out of Shane.

    “But I love you.”
