  7. Shane and Ilya host a Halloween party the first year that Shane is a Centaur. Just them being in love and hanging out with the team. “Hollander. You can't go as a hockey player, you are a hockey player.” Ilya said with an eye roll when he walked in on his husband getting dressed in their bathroom. “First of all, I can go as whatever I want. There are no rules to Halloween. Second of all, I am not a hockey player. I am going as Ilya Rozanov.” Shane smirked before their eyes met in the mirror and Shane's smirk morphed into a genuine smile. He grabbed the Boston jersey that Ilya was just now noticing draped over the chair for the vanity. It had Ilya's old number on it, but instead of Rozanov on the back it said “Second Best Center.” “Shane Hollanov! Are you making a joke?! I thought you were boring. And you are making a joke.” Ilya was giddy with excitement. He loved playful Shane. “No.” Shane gave Ilya's cheek a kiss. “No joke. Just me, going as my husband, the second best center in the league.” Ilya moved away from Shane. If he continued to make physical contact he would not be able to get dressed and the team was going to start arriving at their house for the party soon. He grabbed his own costume, this year he was going as a detective. He liked being known as perceptive. “We will see who is second best. I am on the first line, captain and leading the league in overall points.” “Yes, well I have been on this team for four months and I am already the leading goal scorer. So, we’ll see who is second best at the end of the season.” They grinned at each other. When Shane joined Ottawa, Ilya had worried that being on the same team would mean they would have less opportunities to compete. They fell in love through competing, and he loved when they got to play against each other. He didn't want to lose that. But, he had worried for nothing. Turns out, being on the same team meant even more chances to compete. They scrimmaged against each other several times a week and battled it out in cardio and weight training. In fact, it's a good thing they had been practicing keeping hockey and their relationship separate for more than ten years, because there might be even more tension between them now that they were competing for the same ice time. Being married had not changed either of their drives to be the best. After they both finished dressing, and made their way downstairs, Shane turned towards Ilya with a glimmer of mischief in his eyes. “What, you're not going to post our picture to Instagram? You're always trying to get me to take photos with you. But now that I am in this awesome costume suddenly you don't want to? Worried your fans will agree that you're second best?” Oh. Now it was on. Ilya took two pictures, one of them together, facing the camera and smiling sweetly. And one of the back of Shane's jersey. He almost didn't want to post it because Shane's skater’s ass looked too good and he wanted to keep it for himself. But, there was a contest to win. He posted both pictures to Instagram with the caption “Who is second best?” He put the phone away and kissed his husband. They would let the fans fight it out while they enjoyed the party. After everyone had arrived, Ilya found himself dancing in the middle of the makeshift dance floor - surrounded by beautiful women, and his teammates who were also beautiful. He was maybe a bit high. It felt a lot like last year, but this time when he saw his teammates dancing with their partners, he didn't feel alone. He glanced up at his husband who was chatting with Harris and waved him over. Shane smiled shyly, said something to Harris and walked towards Ilya. “Hi.” Shane said when he folded himself into Ilya's arms. “Hi,” Ilya replied as he wrapped Shane in tightly. “We have danced together more in the four months since our wedding than in the ten years before. I like it.” Shane grinned at Ilya. “You just like touching me.” “Is nice” Ilya said as his hands moved down to Shane's ass. Shane slapped his hand away. “Not here!” He hissed. “Shane. No one is watching. It's fine.” Ilya's eyes glimmered with playful heat. “Nope. No way. We are out but not that out.” “Fine. Fine.” “Do you want to get some air? Someone started the fire pit.” Shane said. Ilya nodded and Shane grabbed his hand to guid them outside. _ When they got to the outdoor seating area surrounding the fire pit Shane noticed that there weren't any seats left. Lisa stood up and moved into Wyatt's lap and Ilya took her spot. Ilya gestured for Shane to sit on his lap but Shane was not sure about this. They were out, and they held hands in public. But sitting on each other's laps? That was a lot of PDA. Like a lot. But, this was their team. The Centaurs had been nothing but supportive. And if Lisa and Wyatt could do it, why couldn't they? Indecision must have been evident on his face because Bood spoke. “Roz, your husband won't sit on your lap? He thinks he will crush you?” Ilya scoffed and looked at Shane with love in his warm eyes but that crooked smile that always meant trouble had made an appearance. “Hollander is so small. Claims to be 5’10, He's almost as short as Barrett.” “I am 5’10! And I am not small. You guys are the worst. Ilya, why don't you sit on my lap.”

  9. After their wedding but before the start of their first hockey season on the same team, Shane and Ilya sit down for a sports network interview, finally explaining their relationship to the world. They sat in the green room, huddled together on the couch, hands clasped, Shane breathing suspiciously fast and loud. Ilya wondered how close he was to full-on panicking. He squeezed Shane’s hand, and leaned over to kiss his cheek. “Hey,” he intoned softly next to Shane’s ear. “It will be fine. All is OK here. Just you and me talking to a nice guy like we are in our living room.” Shane made a distressed noise. “If our living room had five thousand cameras in it.” Ilya smiled. “Is only three cameras, I think. You can ignore them. Come on. We have cameras in our faces every day. This is no different.” “Except we’re talking about our relationship to millions of people, not just having our picture taken or talking about hockey. Why did we agree to this?” Shane whined with an upward, slightly hysterical lilt to the last few words. Ilya decided being sympathetic and soothing was not working. Time to change tactics. “Enough of this. You are Shane Hollander, hockey superstar. Your picture is hanging on the wall of every teenager in Canada. You told off Roger Crowell to his face. You have given a million interviews to reporters before. You can sit down for one more. This is nothing for you.” Shane huffed out a breath, put his hands on his thighs, and stood up. “You’re right. I’m being stupid. It’s fine. We don’t have to hide anymore. We don’t WANT to hide anymore. So let’s get this over with and then maybe people will stop asking us annoying questions everywhere we go.” Ilya smirked as he also stood up and moved next to Shane. “That is maybe a little too optimistic, but yes. We need to, what is the phrase? Set the record straight.” Shane leaned over and kissed him softly. “OK. I’m good. Thank you.” Just then, the young intern who had been put in charge of them returned to the room. “Mr. Ryland is ready for you. Let me bring you to the stage. As a reminder, this is pre-recorded, so if you don’t want to answer a question, or you flub a sentence, we’ll edit around it. No worries. Just be relaxed.” She escorted them to a soundstage with a couch facing one direction, and a leather armchair angled catty-corner toward it. She pointed to the couch and asked them to sit. The PAs fitted them with microphones as Thomas Ryland, anchor of a popular TSN show, came over to shake their hands. He settled into his own chair and fiddled with his notes. The director announced they were rolling and Ilya took Shane’s hand in his and squeezed. “Good evening everyone. I’m here with NHL superstars Ilya Rozanov of the Ottawa Centaurs, formerly with the Boston Bears; and Shane Hollander, also an Ottowa Centaur as of a month ago, formerly of the Montreal Voyageurs, for their first official interview since coming out as a couple last season. Gentlemen, we’re honored you took the time to be here with us.” “Thank you for having us,” Shane replied on cue. “You can understand that the news that two world-famous rivals were actually in a secret relationship for years is both shocking and of great interest to many people. Can you tell us what it’s been like the last several months, being out as active LGBT players, being out as a couple, and now being on the same team?” Shane huffed out a big breath. “Wow, those are complicated questions. On the one hand, it’s such a relief not to hide anymore. It was so stressful every day, worrying who could find out and how, and what would happen then. But also, just like we feared, it has led to a lot of gossip and recrimination, and invasions of our privacy. And then again, so many people, especially young people, have reached out to us, telling their stories, and saying we gave them courage to come out to their teams, their schools, their parents. So it’s a mixed bag.” Ilya added, “I can say that playing on the same team is wonderful. The Centaurs are made of the best people in the league. Everyone loves us and accepts us and knows that for us, there is nothing more serious than playing hockey and winning. We have never brought personal feelings to the ice and we still don’t now.” Shane smiled. “It’s also a big plus to see each other every day. To live together. The hockey season was always hard on us. We were really limited in the time we could spend together. On the whole I’d say there are way more positives than negatives to being out.” Ryland nodded seriously, as if they were discussing world peace instead of hockey. “Probably the biggest question on everyone’s mind is, exactly how long has this been going on? At what point did an epic rivalry turn into an epic love story?” Ilya turned to Shane, and they smiled softly at each other. They had debated how honest to be in this interview and ultimately had decided there was no benefit to avoiding the truth. “Well,” Shane said slowly, “that’s not a simple question. But in the end, the answer is that we’ve been together for about eleven years.” Ryland had trouble masking his surprise. As if to verify he had heard correctly, he asked, “Eleven years?” “Yes,” Ilya said with a hint of humor in his voice, “since before our rookie season. We met for the first time at the World Junior Championship in Saskatchewan. We started a casual relationship afterward that lasted for many years.” Ryland was clearly gobsmacked but put on his professional reporter face and cleared his throat. “I imagine people are wondering how that worked. Ilya, you were in Boston, and Shane was in Montreal. The hockey season lasts nine months a year including training and playoffs. When did you see each other, and how did you keep it a secret?” Shane answered, “We saw each other rarely, which is one of the reasons it was casual for so long. We were afraid for anyone to know precisely because of the famous rivalry. And also,

  18. David let's Ilya in on a secret about the family chicken parmesan recipe. Absolutely no plot to be found. Submitted for the prompt: Secret Family Recipe Ilya grabbed a bag of breadcrumbs off the supermarket shelf and tossed it into the shopping cart. "Nope." Shane said, bringing the cart he was pushing to a standstill. "These aren’t the right kind." Ilya looked down at his phone to double check the shopping list David had texted him that morning. "It just says breadcrumbs. These are breadcrumbs, yes?" "Trust me," Shane said as he returned the bag to the shelf. "When Dad says breadcrumbs, he specifically means panko." "Then why didn't he say that?" "I have no idea, but if you want to make Hollander Chicken Parmesan right, you gotta have panko breadcrumbs." Ilya did want to get the recipe right, so he searched the shelves until he found a cardboard canister labeled 'organic panko' and picked it up to show Shane. "Good?" "Yup," Shane nodded, looking down at their mostly full cart. "Anything else we need?" "Just puree tomato." "Ok, follow me. Dad has some very specific opinions about tomatoes too." "Of course he does," Ilya laughed as he shook his head and followed Shane to the next aisle. *** A few hours later, Shane and Ilya stood on the Hollanders’ front porch, grocery bags in hand. David had offered to teach Ilya the family chicken parmesan recipe as a belated anniversary gift. Obviously, the Hollanders didn’t need to get him an anniversary present, but Ilya liked the idea of being a part of a Hollander family tradition so he’d happily accepted. Ilya rebalanced the bags in his hands and knocked on the front door. “Come in!” Yuna yelled from inside. Ilya opened the door and shouted, “Privet, mama Hollander.” “Privet moi synov'ya. My na kukhne,” Yuna responded, beckoning them to the kitchen. “Your Russian is getting much better.” Ilya smiled as they set the bags down on the kitchen counter. “Thank you, I’ve been practicing. I have a 120 day streak in Duolingo.” “What?!” Shane said. “How is it possible that your Duolingo streak is longer than mine? I’ve been working on my Russian for years now.” “Well, dear, some of us didn’t spend the entire month of July partying and falling off floats at Stanley Cup celebrations.” Ilya snickered.
