  2. Shane grinned at the shocked gasp, turning his head over his shoulder. Rozanov’s jaw had dropped open, more flustered than Shane had ever seen him, beautiful in the low lights of the hotel room. It gave Shane the confidence to stretch his arms up, the #81 Boston jersey hiking up to expose his ass, back turned to Rozanov. He smiled, tilting his head, “You like it?” After Boston wins the Stanley Cup, Shane wears something belonging to Ilya. Years later, when they're married, Ilya wears something belonging to Shane.

He scrambles for the phone and holds it back up to his ear. "Rose, what the fuck?!" he yelps. She cackles down the line. "Happy anniversary, baby!" "It's not my—it's January, Rose!" She continues to laugh, but it's not as infectious as it usually is. He pinches the bridge of his nose. "Rose." OR: Rose Landry is a bad influence. Ilya could kiss her.

  4. One shot for S1 E6 when Yuna & Shane are having a heart-to-heart outside and Ilya & Mr. Hollander are left alone at the kitchen table. Ilya’s got this. Ilya grasps the cool tumbler of, what do they call it—liquid courage—as Mr. Hollander smiles back at him awkwardly. Though he is seated at the table, Ilya’s legs feel wobbly, and his heart feels both light and heavy. Did he and Shane just confess their love out loud? To other people? Everything is happening all at once. Does Shane need him? This is a lot. No, Shane and his mother need their space to process things together. Ilya is right where he needs to be, and he’s approaching this entire situation with calm. This is Shane’s world. Ilya knows and respects how close he is with his parents, and under the circumstances, things could be a lot worse. Mr. Hollander is the first to break the silence. “Again, I’m sorry about, uh, before,” he mumbles. Ilya takes a sip of his vodka. “Before? You mean, at the cottage.” Mr. Hollander nods. “Yeah, I had no idea. Obviously.” “It happened,” Ilya shrugs. “You didn’t know. Maybe we owe you the apology.” Mr. Hollander chuckles. “I don’t see why. You’re grown men. That’s Shane’s place. I intruded.” “Still, you were surprised. Fortunately, I saw you before, er, uh…” Ilya stops himself before he says something he knows Shane would find utterly embarrassing. “Yeah, close call,” Mr. Hollander clears his throat. “But we’re here now. And Yuna’ll be okay. She’s in shock. She and I process things differently. I’m not worried. When Shane says something, he means it. When Shane wants something, he doesn’t give up.” Ilya smiles at this. It’s something he’s known since Shane told him not to smoke outside of the arena when they first met. The guy has guts. “We have that in common. And I do love your son. Very much.” “I believe you, Ilya. And I’ve watched you grow as a player over the past few years. Now it makes sense why Shane always watched all of your games so intently. I thought it was all about the rivalry you two have. Now I know differently.” “Probably both things,” muses Ilya. “Can I get you something else to drink?” asks Mr. Hollander, likely noticing that Ilya has now drained his glass. “Let me show you my collection.” Ilya picks up his empty tumbler and follows Mr. Hollander out of the kitchen. He glances over his shoulder and through the front window where he can see Shane and his mother speaking intently with one another. It’s a promising sign. Shane has taught him to no longer fear the power of communicating. Ilya is now standing across from Mr. Hollander in a wood-paneled room with numerous shelves filled with books, pictures of Shane as a young boy, and what appears to be an extensive record collection. Ilya’s father had a room like this. There’s also a dark mahogany cabinet with an assortment of liquor bottles that Mr. Hollander is sifting through and a table with a crystal tray of additional glasses. Ilya is immediately drawn to a framed picture of Shane in a school uniform of sorts. He’s probably around seven or eight years old, and he’s missing one of his front teeth. It might be the most adorable thing Ilya has ever seen. He has half a notion to pocket the picture. “That was Shane in second grade. He’d just lost his tooth that morning and was angry the photographer made him smile. But he was over it by the next day. The tooth fairy paid him handsomely.” Ilya laughs, brushing his finger over Shane’s awkward smile and prominent smattering of freckles. “In Russia, we have the tooth mouse. Similar thing. My mother made sure to always leave a treat for us. Of course, I didn’t know it was her at the time,” Ilya says warmly. “But what do you do with the teeth? This has always made me wonder.” Mr. Hollander looks unsure himself. “We’ll have to ask Yuna. I have no idea. What about your mom. Is she still in Russia?” ”No,” Ilya shakes his head. “She died when I was twelve.” ”Hey, I’m sorry, Ilya. And I’m sorry about your father, too. Heard about his passing on the news.” ”Thank you. Shane was a big help to me afterwards.” Mr. Hollander nods and reaches for Ilya’s glass. “How would you feel about trying some whiskey?” “Sure,” Ilya agrees. “Let me get you a fresh glass.” Mr. Hollander fills a clean tumbler about a third of the way with a light brown liquid and hands it to Ilya. “It’s one of the things we’re known for here in Canada.” Ilya takes a slow sip and gently sloshes the liquid around in his mouth. “It’s good. Smooth.” “I’ll send you back with a bottle.” “Thank you.” ”I’ve been telling Shane for years that it’s better than ginger ale.” Mr. Hollander pours himself some as well. “It was brave of you to come here.” ”I was happy Shane agreed to let me. I’ve never done this before. You know, meeting the parents.”

  7. A loon calls from across the lake, a long, mournful, warbling sound, and Shane is consumed with laughter. “It sounds so… dramatic. Like it just read tragic Russian literature.” Rozanov snorts, which only makes Shane laugh harder. “He is not dramatic. He is expressing the existential plight of the waterbird! It is deep!” Shane wipes his eyes, gasping. “The plight… of the loon… oh my god.” He laughs until he’s breathless, sagging against Rozanov’s shoulder. Rozanov’s arm comes around him, warm and solid, his own chest shaking with silent laughter.

  9. “Don’t finish that sentence,” Shane says, so Ilya bites at the inside of his thigh instead. When Ilya sucks at the spot, Shane makes a high-pitched noise. “You can—oh fuck—you can leave a mark—” It takes a second for Ilya’s brain to process that as please leave a mark instead of be careful, what you’re doing could leave a mark, and then he grips Shane’s thighs and does just that, one on the soft skin of each, while Shane shakes a little beneath him.

  10. When Ilya gets injured while swimming in the lake, Shane scrambles to save him from drowning. ("We all get our bell rung, eventually." -Shane Hollander) It was a less than perfect day at the lake. A gray day—little sun. But Shane Hollander was overflowing with light. He felt it on his cheeks, all over his skin, in his bones. He couldn’t stop smiling with it. The cottage itself seemed to glow with a living aura. The night before he was looking into his longtime lover’s eyes when he said—twice in Russian, and then once in English—“I love you.” Shane said it back. And his world shifted like tectonic plates. No day would ever truly be gray again. Ilya Rozanov stood on top of the large, slanted rock on which Shane sat. “Don’t dive into the water, you idiot. It’s shallow here—up to your waist.” Ilya ruffled Shane’s slate-black hair. “I do little jump,” Rozanov said. “Barely dive. Closer to —what do you say—eh, belly flop.” Shane rolled his eyes as he carefully rearranged his hair. “You’re going to belly flop into cold water with bruised ribs?” Ilya winced and wrinkled his nose at the thought. “You dive in there and you’re going to sprain your wrists on the bottom before your feet hit the water,” Hollander warned. “Fine!” Ilya made a show of putting his hands behind his back by stretching his long arms up and around. He clasped his own fingers together and stared down at Hollander. “No arms. Half belly flap, half dive. Yes? Approved?” The fondness for Ilya that glowed in Shane’s heart warmed. “Fine!” he said, pronouncing the word with a Russian accent, speaking it the same way Ilya had a moment ago. “But there’s a downed tree down there so aim to the—” Ilya rotated to the right and dove nose-first over Shane’s knees. “—left.” Shane gulped. Ilya disappeared into the water—all six feet of him—and Shane sighed. He looked around, taking a moment to ingest the view. The hockey captain took in the trees, the horizon on the water, the sky. All beautiful, he concluded. But not as beautiful as Ilya Rozanov’s body in those swimming trunks. That was his favorite view of all. Shane looked down at the spot in the water where Ilya had disappeared, and curled his hands into fists when he realized that a whole half minute had passed. How long could his lover hold his breath? Shane didn’t know. “Rozanov?” he called to the silent lake. “Ilya!” The clouds shifted then. Shane concluded that an entire minute had passed. Sunlight through the trees illuminated the colors of the water—blue, black, teal, green... And red. “FUCK,” Shane gasped at the sight of the blood. He eased himself into the water and started swimming as fast as he could. His leg bumped something solid. Shane took a deep breath and dropped underwater, eyes open. Arms paddling, fingers reaching, mostly blind, Shane felt around for the solid object. Fingers found the underwater tree, first, but then he found something hard that felt like skin, and he pulled. Shane summoned all of his strength and swam for the surface. He emerged gasping, holding the limp, unmoving body in a bridal carry. Rozanov’s head lolled against Shane’s bicep— eyes shut, mouth open. “Ilya!” Hollander shouted at him. “ILYA!” When not even an eyelid flinched, he swore again and stomped toward the shore. Shane had never heard his own heart beating. But it was thundering in his ears when he gently laid Ilya’s waterlogged body down on the grass. Rozanov’s skin was corpse-colored except for the massive gash at his hairline that was leaking blood. “Dammit!” Shane shouted, voice cracking, when water leaked from Rozanov’s blue-tinted lips. He rolled him onto his side and watched several cups of water stream from his mouth. Then Shane knelt, pressed his ear to Ilya’s lips, and both listened and felt for his breathing. Nothing. No inhale. No exhale. Tears erupted from Shane’s dark eyes. He pressed two fingers against the pulse point on Ilya’s throat. He found it. Ilya had a pulse. But Shane was certain his heart was beating too slow—the sensation shallow under the white skin. Shane’s eyes were so soaked with tears that everything went funhouse mirror blurry. He rolled Ilya onto his back, squeezed his nostrils shut, and blew air into his lungs. Again. Again and again and again. Over and over he breathed breath into his lover. In the distance, a loon called—mocking, almost. “Please,” Shane said against Ilya’s lips. “Wake up, you asshole! Please!” Shane pulled back and looked down at Ilya’s slack face. “Ilya,” he begged. “ILYA!” Then, with all his strength, Shane pushed down on Ilya’s stomach. Water, vomit, and who knew what else erupted from Ilya’s stomach and chest. A cough followed it—then another. After three more, Ilya’s eyes burst open and he went into a coughing fit that Shane had no doubt killed his already bruised ribs. Shane lifted Ilya’s body, then. Lifted him up into his arms so that he was almost sitting. Shane held him while he coughed—didn’t care about the blood slowly soaking his swimming trunks or the vomit under his knees. Ilya’s wide eyes found Shane’s and refused to look away. Shane whispered into Ilya’s ear, “I’m here, I’ve got you, just breathe, you’re ok—you’re ok—you’re ok.” The blood flow didn’t stop, but the coughing eventually did. “Shane,” Ilya wheezed. “S- Sorry…” “Shhh,” Hollander soothed. “You hit your head. You’re bleeding bad. I have to get you to the hospital—can you stand?”

  11. "So, silent retreat buddy?" He genuinely asks. Shane was being a really bad friend. Hayden spent weeks around babies and he probably needed a bit of a normal adult conversation but the only adult thought coming to Shane's mind right now was 'my dick is in Ilya's mouth'. "Yeah. You know. Doing yoga. Bonfires and stuff," he let out an involuntary moan and clapps his hand across his mouth while Ilya doubles his efforts. Hayden chuckles on the other line. "You sure about that? You don't have any company?" "May... Maybe." "Oh. Oooohhhh bud, sorry. I'm hanging up. Say hi to Lilly for me." But, before Hayden could drop the line Shane says back: "He says hi back." "Wait. He?" *** Or: Hayden finds out about Ilya and Shane in an unsuspected way. Inspired by 'that' phone call scene in ep6 😏

  15. Ilya is jealous and lashing out. Shane goes after him. A tentative kind of fix-it fic for Episode 4. He didn't want to admit that he was seething with jealousy. Seeing Hollander had only made it worse. He hadn't looked at Ilya, not once the whole game. He’d barely even been present. They’d both had probably the worst game of their entire careers, and Ilya tried not to read too much into that. It didn't matter. Hollander was just distracted by his fucking movie star girlfriend. It was Ilya who was fucking miserable and heartbroken and furious with himself. Of course, it only got worse when he realized that of all fucking bars they could have picked to commiserate in, it's the one where Shane Hollander and Rose Landry are, her smiling up at him with her pretty smile while she dances. And it hurt. But it also made him want to lash out, to be mean. He grabbed his drink from the bar, stalking closer. Like a second sense, Shane looked up at his approach, stilling like a deer in headlights. Ilya smirked, dropping his eyes to where Rose Landry had her hands tangled in the white shirt Hollander was wearing. “Well, well, well,” Ilya said, eyes glittering maliciously. “I guess the rumors are true after all.” Shane looked startled. The “fuck off, Rozanov” was automatic, though his eyes were intense as he looked up at him. Searching. Just a little bit scared. Of what he might do. Or say. And Ilya was an asshole. But not that much of an asshole. He looked down further. “Hello, Rose Landry,” he said. Her smile was friendly but confused, and when she offered her hand, removing it, Ilya noted, from Shane's abs, he took it, kissing the back of it and winking at her. This, he can do. The flirting. Just Rozanov being a dog, as usual. His teammates were probably watching and pissing themselves laughing. “Hi.” She looked, he thought absently, very beautiful in her dress. “This looks very cozy, mmm?” he said, wiggling his eyebrows at them both. “Didn't know you had it in you, Hollander.” He sounded as bitter as he felt, probably. Rose's brow furrowed at that, and she looked back at Shane. He could see her putting two and two together. Ilya smiled. “You two have fun, now.” He winked at Shane. Shane glared back. Cold laughter dripped from his lips as he turned away. “Shane?” he heard Landry say. “Ignore him, Rozanov is just an asshole,” Shane muttered back. Ilya paused. He shouldn't look back. He could feel his eyes stinging. Orpheus at the entrance back to the overworld, Eurydice behind him. He closed his eyes. Around him, bodies moved to the loud thrum of the music, happy, laughing, dancing, a buzz of energy that couldn't penetrate the cold, empty, gaping cavern that was his chest. It was inevitable. He couldn't have stopped himself from looking even if he wanted to. He was weak, undisciplined. He glanced back. Rose Landry was dancing again, pressed to Shane's front, eyes closed as she moved to the music. But Shane was still. And he was looking back. And his eyes. Ilya shuddered at the look in his eyes. Desperate. Lost. Sad. Ilya drank his fill, and gave the opposing captain a single nod. Acknowledging the distress, filing it away as hope choked him. Shane’s lips thinned. He needed to get out of here. He needed to go and get so fucking obliterated that he didn't remember his own name, let alone Shane's. Tearing his eyes away, he sought out Cliff, telling him he was leaving. The team made an assumption, a wrong one, but Ilya didn't correct it. The vodka was cheap, burning the whole way down because America could do nothing right, certainly not making a vodka that was drinkable. But he was too fucking heartbroken to care, inconsolable in his grief and anger and self-loathing. It was, of course, when he was two-thirds of the way through the bottle when his phone lit up with a text. Ilya set the bottle aside on the damp tile of the shower floor, standing up on shaky knees and scrabbling for it. The case was slippery in his hands, and he almost dropped it. And then he was staring. Jane: I hate this. Me fucking too, Hollander, he thought bitterly. He brought the phone to his forehead, squeezing his eyes closed. It was fucking three in the morning. Why the fuck was Hollander

  18. “I’m putting in a transfer request to Carleton this afternoon.” Ilya gets off his bike and wraps his sweaty arms around Shane’s sweaty shoulders, presses their sweaty heads together and holds him tight. “Nooo, Hollander, you cannot leave me. Who will put Barrett and Marly in time out when they fuck up too many shots in a row?” “I’m sure Bood will do it. He loves bossing people around.” Bood stands up straight and salutes his captains. “I take the title with great honor. Enjoy the Ravens, Hollander—your legacy of being a chaste Victorian debutante will be remembered fondly but not carried on.” This snaps that last thread of Shane’s refined patience. “I can pick up girls! I have no problem getting numbers and calling them and talking!” Hazy smirks. “Innocent until proven guilty.” “I can pick people up,” Shane says again, moving off his bike and out of Ilya’s sweaty embrace. “And I don’t have to do it by concocting schemes or stripping on top of the LAX bros’ coffee table.” Or, after some team chirping at Shane's expense, Ilya accidentally interrupts a few of his potential dating prospects and then keeps on doing it less than accidentally
