  1. MLH Star Shane Hollander Seen Entering Rose Landry’s Upper West Side Mansion: Are They On Again? Immediately, his stomach sank. He stared at the photo attached to the article; Rose embracing him, kissing his cheek, a wide smile on her face. It sure looked like they were back together. “They’re talking about us again,” Shane said, looking at his phone anxiously, “I didn’t mean to cause a big stir-” “Shane, they freak out when I walk down the street to the bodega,” Rose said, idly turning a page in her magazine, “It’s not that serious.”

Ilya was being too kind. Not that Ilya was ever, like, a bad boyfriend or something. He was very in love with Shane. It was noticeable. But usually their relationship revolved around shit-talking, making jokes, ribbing the other any chance they got. But Ilya had been weirdly nice the past few days. --- In which Ilya thinks he is being too mean to Shane, and Shane tries to figure out why his menace of a boyfriend is suddenly a saint.

"You're supposed to smoke over there." Someone said from behind Ilya. Ilya almost dropped his cigarette. His English was shitty, but he had studied that sentence enough times over the years to understand it immediately. He didn't even think about his words much anymore, but it was impossible to avoid them. He turned instinctively, and was face to face with Shane fucking Hollander. Out of almost seven billion people, of course Ilya's soulmate had to be his fated rival. It was almost poetic. Still, Ilya had enough sense to realize just how bad this was. or, Shane says Ilya's soulmate words. Ilya vows to never speak a word to him to keep him from finding out. They fall in love anyway.

  5. The breath that Shane expels feels like the last straw. Ilya is so fucking tired of guessing. Wondering what he did wrong and how he can make it right. A pit forms in his stomach every time Shane looks at him like that. Like he’s done. Like he’s tired. Like he’s one stupid comment away from kicking Ilya out entirely. It’s not what Ilya should feel when in proximity to his husband. This shaken, tense situation is beyond fucked. Maybe it makes him a child that he hasn’t asked Shane point blank what is going on yet. Maybe it makes him a coward. Shane and Ilya spend a tense evening together.

  6. He knew it stung Ilya, people not understanding. It stung him too. Because to Shane, loving Ilya was like breathing and also like standing on solid ground after years of drifting. It flooded him and steadied him at the same time. It hurt, knowing the world reduced them to a rivalry, a strange story, a piece of scandalous gossip when what they had was so much more. He wanted to be by Ilya’s side for everything, the mundane, the bright and the hard. And maybe not everyone who was in love felt like this, so overwhelmed and so steadied all at once. But Shane did. And if love was a contest, well… he is the winner. Best couple. Number one. Most epic love story ever. Or 4 times Shane told people him and Ilya were practically soulmates and the 1 time the universe told him.

  7. "Yes. Not a big party. It will be chill. Mostly just the team and partners. Bood has fun parties." Ilya wasn't meeting his eyes. Shane still didn't know what to say, and he still had no clue why Ilya had brought it up. "Oh." Ilya looked up at him then. His eyebrows were slightly furrowed, his jaw tight. Something was going unsaid. Is he asking me for permission? Honestly, Shane wanted to tell him no. Ilya going to that party felt like a waste of their time together, and they got so little of it. Still, if he really wanted to go, Shane wouldn't stop him. "Did you want to go or something?" Shane asked. He pulled the pillow out of his lap. His feet had been tucked under his legs, so he moved them to be flat on the ground. "I could stay here, I guess. Or head back to—" "I want you to go too. I want you to come with me to the party." The Boxing Day fight from chapter 22 of The Long Game, from Shane's perspective. (AKA "I already chose you, Hollander.")
