The team has just come back into the locker room and Ilya is sitting in front of his stall, unlacing his skates, when his world changes. “Oh, fuck,” Bood says. He’s got his phone in his hand and a stricken expression on his face. “The Metros plane had to make an emergency landing.” -- Or: Shane's plane is the one that almost crashes.

Wanting to get an escape from the ‘power couple’ taking the media by storm over the last couple of months Ilya decides to escape to a place where no one cares about Shane Hollander. Russia. Sure it wasn’t a place Ilya loved to be these days but he needed the break for a few days. Shane Hollander finally took the first step towards his own betterment— okay, Rose slowly walked him into that step but it counted— and now he felt more ready to try and go for what he really wanted. Only life had other plans for them both.

"- Fuck, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. There was a wreck... pushed my car into the water. I can see the lights from the first responders, but... I don't think they're going to make it. And I can't get out. I tried, Ilya, I swear I tried. I just... I love you. That's all I'm thinking right now. I love you, and I'm so sorry I'm not going to-" There was a choked-off sound. Shane fighting off a sob, Ilya thought, and a matching noise came out of his own throat. "I wanted to marry you. I wanted to marry you more than anything in the whole fucking world."

Hi, this is Ilya. I will never listen to your voicemail.
Shane jolts like he’s been shot, a sharp breath bursting from the depths of his diaphragm. The comfort of hearing Ilya’s voice fizzles out with the knowledge that Ilya didn’t pick up. Logic says he’s still on the flight. But why would he—
Ilya knows how Shane is, how he gets. He wouldn’t send a bunch of ominous fucking messages and then drop off the face of the earth without letting Shane know he’s okay.
Except, he did. Which means—
The plane scene, reimagined. ft. Ilya's voicemail.

“My - it’s my,” Shane pants, his hand flapping like Ilya’s sometimes does when he’s searching for an English translation that he can’t quite remember. Shane’s heart squeezes painfully. “He’s-“ He wants to say my boyfriend is on that plane. He wants to cry, and throw things, and scream the love of my life might be dying while we stand here. But he doesn’t. He can’t. His voice can’t find the words, can’t find the strength to speak, and even if he could - would he? Would Shane tell the whole world that for him, it has always been Ilya? Will only ever be Ilya? (Or, the plane scene in The Long Game goes a little differently.)
