love, pull your sore ribs in (i will pull your tangles out) by nevereverever
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)

Being a professional athlete in a contact sport is an exercise in enduring pain. Sometimes you get benched for three weeks because you have a broken cheekbone after you get hit in the face with a slap shot. Sometimes you play through a strained quad, a bruised shoulder, a mild fever. Most times, it’s just the constant, unending soreness that comes with pushing your body to its limit every single day. Every athlete had an injury they hated most, though, one that’s particularly painful or recurrent or just annoying. Ilya fucking hated injuring his ribs. There is almost nothing you can do with your body that doesn't involve moving your torso, and the pain is deep, throbbing, and gets just a tiny bit worse every time you breathe. Sitting up hurts, lying down hurts, walking hurts, and worst of all, coughing fucking hurts. or Ilya is sick and injured in the off-season. Luckily, Shane loves him so very much and is there to take care of him.

Shane visibly relaxed. “Oh, thank fuck. Because I was starting to feel really guilty for getting a little turned on the moment I saw you.” Ilya snorted. “Wow, Shane. Good to know that even high, you’re still easy for me.”

Shane dialed. It rang… and rang… and rang again. With each passing ring the pit gnawing its way through Shane's stomach was growing. Just as he felt like it was about to stop ringing and go to voicemail, it picked up. Shane breathed out a sigh of relief. “Thank God, I was getting worried. Where are you?” There was an unsettling beat of silence before someone answered, “Hollander?” It was not Ilya’s voice. Shane’s stomach dropped. He did his best to keep his voice steady as he answered. “Yeah? Uh, who is this? Can you give Ilya back his phone please?” Another beat of silence. “Hollander… God, um, something’s happened-” After the events of The Long Game, Shane and Ilya play their first All-Star Weekend. Things are going great, until they go truly and horribly sideways. Ilya is left hospitalized following an attack off the ice, and Shane is left to pick up the pieces and wonder why.

With shaking hands, Shane unlocked his phone and dared to click on the article SportsCenter already posted. There wasn't more information than what Shane had just seen, but the article already featured a photo. Ilya lying motionless on a stretcher, some of his teammates trying to cover him while being taken away. But what was really getting to him, was the blood on the ice. He hastily locked his phone again, not being able to stare at this picture any longer. Fuck. He really needed to see Ilya. or: Shane has to watch Ilya get injured during a game and faces the difficutlies of a secret relationship in the meantime

“Hey, Hollander, did you see the news about Rozanov?” Shane’s head snaps up and he almost gives himself whiplash. It’s deja vu, and it throws him back to that moment last season when Ilya’s father passed and he went MIA. His teammates had speculated, but Shane had known the truth – Ilya’s father had passed and he’d flown back to Russia to take care of family matters. “No?” He states simply, because he doesn’t trust his tongue to not betray him. What could Ilya possibly have done that would get him on the news? A phone is passed over, and Shane squints against the light and the tiny font of the news article. In big, bold letters the title reads ‘HOCKEY STAR ILYA ROZANOV SEVERELY INJURED IN CAR CRASH.’ It’s accompanied by a generic picture from the Boston news channel, but Shane doesn’t scroll down any further. He can’t. He doesn’t think his brain is capable of any thoughts currently. The phone drops out of his shaking hand and he realizes belatedly that tears are blurring his vision. “I gotta go.” --- OR, Ilya is in a car accident. Shane hurries to be by his side, and outs them in the process. Set during the year Ilya is playing for Boston.
