They may not have any idea how to do it, but there’s no way in hell the Montreal Metros are going to risk losing their Captain to a more accepting team. Full of determination, grit, open hearts, and absolutely no savvy, this team is going to learn how to be allies, come hell or high water.

The Queerest Team in the NHL by Anonymous
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2026-02-01
“Man, are we the gayest team in the NHL or what?” Tanner Dillon joked.
“Ilya is bisexual,” Wyatt Hayes reminded him. Ilya raised his beer at Wyatt in thanks.
“The queerest team in the NHL,” Dillon corrected with barely a beat.
“We must be,” Shane said slowly, expression scrunched up as he seemed to seriously ponder the question. “There might be some teams with a closeted player, or maybe two, but five? Statistically speaking, that’s highly improbable.”
or
Luca Haas comes out to the team. Thank goodness queer sherpas Ilya, Shane, and Troy are there to guide him. And the Centaurs are supportive, obviously. Maybe too supportive.

A locked folder from Shane's phone ends up on the internet for everyone to see, including his teammates. It certainly undercuts their victory against the Bears, but it'll all turn out right. Eventually.

“Is it your wedding day?”
Shane sputters. “Sorry?”
“The tuxedo,” she points out. “You look like you just got married.”
“Oh,” Shane says dumbly, glancing down at his rumpled suit. “No,” he adds.

Live Through This (And You Won't Look Back) by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Shane rolls onto his side and stares at the faint outline of the window. The darkness presses in, but it doesn’t feel as suffocating as usual.
Before he can talk himself out of it, he reaches for his phone. The screen lights up the room, too bright. His thumb hovers for a second, then he opens the thread.
Shane: I think we should tell Scott.
OR:
Scott kissing a man on live television gives Shane and Ilya the courage to do more than just spend the summer together. What starts as coming out to one person suddenly snowballs into something much bigger. It changes everything, except how much they love each other.

The Voyageurs ask Shane to join FanMail in order to foster a better connection with fans. Internet sleuths start to notice some interesting details in the background of Shane’s videos, and then the internet does...what the internet does.
Or Shane and Ilya are granted an opportunity to come out on their own terms. Sort of. And in they do it in a very Ilya way. (Surprisingly, it is Shane’s idea)
