Shane was thinking about what awaited him tonight as he washed his hair in the showers with the rest of his team after the game, and a small smirk graced the corner of his lips. The thought of Ilya pinning him to the bed like he’d pinned him to the boards, seeing him clean and freshly-showered post-game and then wrecking him all over again into a sweaty, breathless mess. Ilya deserved that tonight. Shane would fight back a little, just for the fun of it— but Ilya always got him in the end. Shane was weak for him every time. *** Shane and Ilya meet up after the game at Ilya's penthouse in Boston, and Ilya plays with Shane like putty in his hands. No matter how vicious he was on the ice, Shane Hollander was always so, so good for Ilya Rozanov.

“I need to sleep,” Ilya murmurs next to him on the bed, his voice distant. “Yeah, me too,” Shane rushes to agree. His fingers drum against his glass of vodka and he chugs the rest in one go. “I should, uh…” He moves to stand up off the bed, the soiled towel dropping from his stomach, and his knees buckle. Shane stumbles but remains upright, his vision blurry. But the glass in his hands slips from his trembling fingers, and, to his absolute horror, shatters all across the floor of Ilya’s penthouse suite. ---- After the hookup where Shane and Ilya didn’t kiss, Shane nearly passes out in his rival’s hotel room.

"No," Shane said again, a minute or so later. "No?" Ilya mumbled against Shane's skin. "Not good," Shane said petulantly. Ilya pulled his face away from Shane's shoulders and opened his eyes, though he couldn't make out much. Some horrible realization was building in his chest, and he wasn't sure he wanted to see it clearly. Still, he asked, "You're not good?" Shane sighed like he was in pain. "Not good enough." Or Ilya reminds Shane how good he is. Playing with Shane was electric. Ilya had gotten a taste for it during their All-Stars game in Florida, when they'd finally been put on the same team for the first time in their competitive careers, but that was nothing compared to playing for the Ottawa Centaurs together. Ilya was the captain, but sometimes it felt like they shared the position. Their other teammates certainly treated Shane with enough reverence that he may as well have been their co-captain. "Assistant captain at best," said Ilya when he and Shane talked about it. Shane threw his head back in laughter in that way that showed off the long expanse of his neck. Ilya wanted to bite him. "Fuck you," said Shane through another laugh. Ilya grinned, all teeth like a shark, and gave into his base desires to sing his teeth into Shane's skin, just hard enough to make him yelp. "I don't really think of myself like that, you know that, right?" Shane asked him sometime later, when they were naked and sweaty, and Ilya was already thinking about how much they needed to change their sheets. "Like what?" Ilya asked distantly, his thoughts were still sluggish from sex. "Like a co-captain or an assistant captain or whatever. We all think of you as the captain." Shane pulled him close. "Me included." Ilya's thoughts cleared just enough for him to tease. "Is lie. Otherwise, you would call me captain in bed." Shane's cheeks turned red, his whole face turned red, all the way down his neck. He scrunched up his face like a kitten. "Gross," laughed Shane. "I don't want to think about you like that when I'm on the ice." "Gross?" gasped Ilya, offended. Shane laughed again, this time louder than before. See? Electric. Ilya had never felt anything like it. They played together and practiced together—except when Coach Wiebe separated them because they were being annoying—and went home together every night. They didn't win all their games, which Shane said he expected, but Ilya found annoying, but they won most of them, and every time Ilya was off the ice, he would have to fight the urge to pin Shane down in the showers and fuck him. For the first time, Ilya's life was full. He played for Ottawa with his husband and went home to his husband's family. He spent time with Yuna and David and let himself pretend that they were his parents too. They certainly liked to refer to themselves as such, which Ilya loved and also found unnerving. He'd never realized how scary it was to have something to lose. Things went from the empty to the grey of winter to the bright, stinging heat of summer after Shane joined his team, after they got married, after they moved in together and didn't have to sleep in separate beds. Every day, even in the frigid Canadian cold that came late in the year, felt like that first summer at the cottage to Ilya. But it wasn't all sunshine, as much as Ilya had hoped it would be. It was pretty close, almost perfect, but there was something that Ilya couldn't ignore. "Fuck Montreal," Tanner said, a sneer in his words. They trashed Montreal more than they did any other team, which was to be expected from Ottawa, but had only gotten worse following Shane's leaving the team. "They're not all bad," Shane said with a sigh, needlessly diplomatic. "Oh?" Tanner asked with a raised eyebrow and a smirk. "Should we let them win then?" Shane shook his head. He looked like he was smiling indulgently, but Ilya didn't miss the way the muscles in his neck strained slightly. He hadn't slept much leading up to this game, and Ilya could see the dark circles under Shane's dark freckles. He didn't like them. "Fuck no," Shane said with a soft laugh. They won their game against Montreal, unsurprisingly. They were a better team. Shane had carried Montreal for years, and they were finally learning what it meant to be without their star player. Especially considering that Hayden was across the ice looking at Shane like a kicked puppy. Ilya left the rink with vindication clinging to his teeth like blood. He slapped Bood on the back roughly, and the two of them grinned at each other. The other players were congratulating Shane, who was smiling politely at each of them. Not one of the smiles touched his eyes, and something unnerved grew in Ilya's stomach. “Going out tonight?" Luca asked with that chipper grin that made every like him. "Sure," Shane agreed first, which was more worrying than the lack of sleep. Ilya's eyebrows furrowed, but when Luca turned to look at him, he nodded enthusiastically. "You heard him," Ilya said with the brightest grin he could manage. The bar they went to felt more like a club for how packed it was, and despite Ilya's latent desires to be out among people, loud music blasting in his ears as he swallowed down a few shots of Vodka, he'd never wanted to head home more. He nearly told Shane as much, nearly pulled him aside, and pressed his lips to Shane's collarbone to get what he wanted.

Florida felt illicit. Their hotel had been on the beach, steps from the sand. Hallways had smelled of sunscreen and salt water. The view from their balcony had been sky and ocean, shades of the same blue. Everything had glistened. Everything had pulsed. Ilya had worn the skimpiest pair of swim trunks Shane had ever seen in his life. Neon blue, nearly nonexistent, low on Ilya’s hips, so Shane had spent at least five minutes every hour blinking back the shock. He had tried to read by the pool—he really had. He’d stretched out on a lounge chair, book on his chest, sunglasses on, telling himself he was being relaxed. He’d even gotten in two whole pages before the sun had vanished. “You are ignoring me,” Ilya had announced. Then he’d climbed right into Shane’s lap. Not beside him. Not over him. Straddling him. Shane’s book had sailed off his stomach and onto the pool deck. He’d reached toward it reflexively but halted when Ilya cupped his face, and his thumbs rubbed the edges of Shane’s sunglasses. or hollanov take a lil pre-holiday break in the sun

still the best (still an asshole) by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-20
Four times Ilya Rozanov reminded everyone exactly who the fuck they were dealing with (spoiler: still an asshole, still elite, still not going anywhere), and one time he didn’t have to be anything except soft.
Or being out didn’t make him nicer. Being married didn’t make him softer. Being older didn’t make him weaker. And being a father? Well. That’t when things get complicated.
(He’s really good at that last part. Don’t tell anyone.)

“This is just the version I use. Everyone has their preference, but I can send you the Amazon link for this book if you like,” Shane said, while Ilya flipped through the field guide. He stopped on the section on loons, where two different species were illustrated in wading water and mid-flight. Ilya pointed at one of the illustrations. A sleek dark bird, with white and black checker-board wings and a stark red eye. “We saw this one today, yes?” “Yep. The common loon. It’s aquatic, so you’ll always find them near water, usually a lake like we just saw. It’s the national bird of Canada, actually.” “Common. You can find this bird all over?” Ilya asked. “Around here, at least. It’s my favorite bird,” Shane admitted. “Pretty boring, I know.” Shane’s shoulders were hunched up, like he was embarrassed to admit that he was the bird guy, who did in fact, like birds. Well, that would not do. “Boring is good. I like boring,” Ilya insisted. (Or, Ilya Rozanov, a newly arrived hockey agent in Ottawa, falls for a local birder).

January, 2016 Ilya orders two burgers and fries for them to share. There is a can of ginger ale, which Shane takes gladly, and, there is also coleslaw salad, which Ilya insisted he got for himself, but Shane caves in and takes a forkful of it too, and, there is an ice cream sandwich, and, Shane doesn’t even like sweet things, but he bites into it as well under Ilya’s amused gaze. “What?” Shane mumbles, his mouth full. Ilya shakes his head. He looks so peaceful and truly calm, which is why Shane doesn’t expect him to open his mouth and say: “You truly are going in heat” so casually. Or, how Shane and Ilya make a baby (prequel to ‘Ice Baby’). January, 2016 Shane is boiling. And not because of the weather, but that one is pretty close. The heat is unbelievable. The weather in Los Angeles is normally pretty mild in January, but this year it turned out to be unnaturally hot, and because they were so far out in the desert, the temperatures felt almost ten times worse. It does not help that Shane feels feverish. He woke up sweaty and flushed this morning, despite the cool nighttime air he let through the open balcony doors (he doesn’t turn on the AC because he thinks it is not good for him), but now, his skin feels rigid and dry, and, no matter how much water he keeps drinking, he cannot quench down the thirst rising in his body. He spent the first half of the day wandering around in a strange haze, but, he feels calmer now, away from the nauseating scents and the constant presence of the other people surrounding him. He cannot however hide away from the sun. Even, in the shade of the umbrella and palm trees, it feels over a hundred degrees. It is past lunchtime, and most of the players of this year’s All-Star Game are back at their rooms or spending time with their families in the hotel, while Shane is one of the few, who stayed out, an unread book lying open on his chest, cover up, as he considers his options. He technically still has time to go back to his room and take a nap before this evening’s charity dinner. He is not particularly tired, but it would be wise to gather his strength after a restless night. He can also stay out and read, taking advantage of the pool, while it’s empty. Shane has a small hot tub back at his villa, but the pool is deeper and wider and Shane would love to use it to his advantage. It is so rare to carve out small moments for himself, that Shane wants to enjoy them to the fullest while he can. The mid-afternoon sun is cruel. January heat is unforgiving, and Shane sort of hopes that the promised rain, which is supposed to break out later in the day, will ease the heaviness in the air. He sinks into the sun-bed, his sunglasses perched low on his nose, then picks up the paperback and tries to focus on the words in front of him. The pool, with its smooth, crystal-like waters is calling to him. Shane sighs, giving up on reading after ten minutes, and steps towards the swimming pool. Tension lifts off his chest when he lets his feet soak in the cool water. Shane is alone, so he takes his time, entering the pool, his body relaxing under the clear surface. Swimming never failed to calm his racing mind and now it also manages to soothe the unsettling anxiety underneath his skin. Shane dives in, headfirst, and he is not thinking about anything other than the water smothering his body like a blanket. His head is completely blank which is perhaps why the arms tightening around his waist make him gasp out in surprise, and rise in panic above the surface, gulping for air. “What the fuck-!” “Found you,” a gleeful voice chirps beside his ear. Shane wants to trash out, but his movements are slow and all he manages is the fiery scowl over his shoulder, and turn round to stare at the familiar face. “We are in public!” “No one is here,” the man shrugs, but he does let go of Shane’s waist and swims to the opposite side of the pool, not even trying to look guilty after noticing the frown twisting Shane’s face. “Had to make sure you were not planning on drowning yourself.” “I know how to swim, Rozanov,” Shane huffs, “and it is now that deep in here.” The Russian gives him a playful look across the pool. Shane’s skin tingles where Ilya’s hands touched him just a moment ago, and he pushes away a longing thought, that he wants to feel the alpha’s arms wrap around him again. Rozanov takes long leisurely strokes across the pool, and Shane tries not to stare at the bulge of his muscles or at the tanned skin, glistening under the Californian sun. Los Angeles has been good to Ilya. It makes his hair curlier, and his face flushed and warm from all the tanning, and he smiles more, his teeth sharp and white against his darkened skin. Shane likes the look of eternal summer on him, and it is not good for either his heart, nor his poorly concealed desire. “I thought you wanted to swim,” Rozanov’s annoyed voice shakes Shane out of his lingering. “Come on, Hollander. Entertain me.” Shane looks around. He is worried. A part of him knows that Ilya is right, they are alone, but the idea that someone could come in, and see the two of them together, nudges him uncomfortably.

Shane and Ilya’s rivalry has never led to real violence, until now, when Shane is distracted and can’t keep his hands or anger to himself. What begins as a heated confrontation on the ice ends in a night of pleading and passion. “I can fix it, let me show you how I can fix it.” Shane’s eyes flicked down to Ilya’s pants and back up again. “You love sucking my dick, da?” He asked Shane as if he didn’t already know the answer. “And yet you punch me on ice,” he said. “And you believe I still let you?” Shane was silent. Was this it? Had he finally crossed a line he couldn’t step back from? Was he about to lose the one thing he’d been craving since the puck dropped, the thing that had tangled him up so badly it spilled onto the ice in front of everyone? “You are denying a blowjob from me because I punched you?” Shane spoke trying to understand what Rozanov had planned.
