Ilya Rozanov's Cab Service

by mightyd0lphin

Summary

“Dude, I’d really like to know less about your sex life.”

“Is good for you,” Rozanov said. “You need excitement in your life. What do you give Mrs Pike, fifteen minutes of missionary?”

“Fuck off.” Hayden scowled at him. “I have four fucking kids, I think that’s evidence enough that my bedroom life is happy.”

“Fifteen minutes of missionary can make four kids.”

“It’s not fifteen min- Oh my God just stop it!”

~~

Hayden needs to get from Montreal to Ottawa in time for their game that afternoon. Shane has a great idea about who can give him a ride.

more of the hayden's suffering universe bcos ive been writing too much angst recently

Ilya Rozanov's Cab Service

Hayden was woken at four in the morning by screaming and crying. He jumped out of bed at once, because this was not the normal sort of screaming and crying. Having four kids, you learn to tell when screaming was unimportant, and this- these were screams that something was wrong.

He and Jackie raced down the stairs to find Jade on the floor crying, her arm twisted at an impossible angle.

“Honey, honey, what happened?” Jackie questioned, picking her up.

“I- I FELL,” Jade wailed, not calming down at all in her mother’s arms.

Hayden was still eyeing the arm. “Jacks,” he warned, “I think that’s broken. We need to get her to the emergency room.”

Jackie stared at him, wide-eyed, and nodded. “You take her,” she said. “I’ll call my mom, get her to watch the other kids and come and meet you.”

~~

Hayden spent the next five hours in the emergency room, Jackie coming to join him after one hour. They managed to get the story out of Jade once she was able to form proper sentences - she had woken up and gone to get a drink of water, and had tripped down the stairs in the dark. The kids had fallen down the stairs before, it wasn’t unheard of. She’d just got unlucky, Hayden knew, and landed poorly.

Still, he felt terrified, and stressed, as they waited for the X-ray results, and talked to the doctors, and drank shitty hospital coffee. It was only when they took Jace to go and get her cast put on that Hayden looked at his phone.

Shit. He had a million texts, and a few hundred missed calls. Most recently, eighteen of them from Shane. He glanced at his watch, and, yup. He’d missed the team bus to Ottawa. They were supposed to be playing there this afternoon.

He called his Captain back. Shane picked up after one ring.

“Hey-” Hayden started.

“Hayden, what the fuck?” Shane’s voice demanded. “Nine am leave! You know this, what the fuck happened?! The rest of the team managed to make it! No one’s even been able to contact you for hours! This is your job!”

“I- sorry man,” Hayden said tiredly. “I really am. It’s, uh- family emergency.”

“It- oh,” Shane sounded contrite at once. “Oh, shit, I’m sorry. I wasn’t, um… sorry, I was thinking about hockey, forget hockey. Is everything okay?”

“Yeah,” Hayden sighed. “Jade managed to break her arm at like four am, I’ve been in the emergency room ever since.”

“Shit, is she alright?”

“Yeah, yeah, they’re putting the cast on her now. Listen, I can cab it to Ottawa, make it in time.”

“What, no, it’s okay. You should stay.”

Hayden shook his head. “Nah, don’t worry, the chaos is all over now. Jackie’s just gonna take her home and put her to bed, there’s not much else to do. Besides, I kinda wanna play right now, burn off some of this adrenaline.”

Shane hummed, somewhat disapproving. “...Well, only if you’re sure,” he said slowly.

“I am,” Hayden said. “Let me see what Uber will take a two hour booking, I’ll let you know.”

“Don’t Uber, that’ll cost so much!”

“I don’t care,” Hayden said. “Besides, Jackie needs the car.”

Shane was quiet for a while. “...Well, actually,” he said, in a tone Hayden had come to fear. “Ilya’s still in Montreal, and he’s driving to Ottawa today. I can get him to give you a lift?”

Hayden cursed his life. As if having Rozanov beat him on home ice last night wasn’t bad enough, now Shane wanted him to spend two hours alone in a car with the man.

“Yeah, no, don’t worry,” Hayden said decisively. “I’ll pay for the Uber, it’s cheaper than therapy.”

“Hayd,” Shane said. “Come on, please. Just take the offer. Ilya won’t mind.”

Hayden huffed, loud enough that Shane would be able to hear it on the other end. “Fine,” he snapped. “Whatever. If i murder him though, I’m blaming you at my trial.”

Shane chuckled. “Yeah, sure. Give Jade my love, alright?”

“Will do.”

Shane hung up, and Hayden turned to stare at Jackie helplessly. She was laughing for the first time that day.

“Stop it,” he told her.

~~

Unknown Number: at pick up place. leaving in ten minutes with or without you 😘

Hayden glared at his phone. The fucking prick.

Hayden: omw.

He gathered his shit and looked at Jackie. “Wish me luck.”

“Luck,” she grinned.

“Tell Jade I love her, yeah? Let me know when you’re back home, I’ll facetime you guys.”

“Sure thing. Go get your ride, try not to punch him again.”

“No promises,” Hayden muttered, but he left the waiting room, following the signs to the exit.

He spotted Rozanov at once, how could he not? The man was in an obnoxiously ostentatious sports car, with the windows down and music playing well above a socially acceptable volume. Hayden grimaced, walking over with his head down and slipping into the car, switching the radio off instantly.

“What’s wrong with you?” he hissed. “This is a hospital!”

The corner of Rozanov’s lip curled upwards. “Hello to you too, Pike.”

“Whatever.”

Rozanov turned the radio back on, but twisted the volume knob down until it was at an almost normal level, before revving the engine and pulling out of the hospital.

Hayden kept his eyes firmly on the road. For a few minutes, neither of them spoke, and he began to hope that they would get through the two hour drive without exchanging another word. But as soon as Rozanov had turned onto the highway, he opened his mouth again.

“She is okay?” he asked. “Your kid?”

Hayden shot him a glance. “Yeah,” he said. “Needs a cast, but she’ll be fine.”

“Is good,” Rozanov nodded.

“Yeah.”

“...Shane feels guilty for yelling at you.”

“He, uh, doesn’t have to,” Hayden said. “He didn’t know.”

“Yes.”

Rozanov didn’t say anything else, and Hayden shifted awkwardly.

“You played very shit last night,” Rozanov said casually. “Even for fifteenth best player.”

“Shut up, I did not.”

Rozanov did not shut up - when had he ever shut up? “Does your nose still hurt?”

“No,” Hayden said stubbornly. “And that was a dick move, by the way. Shane got mad at me, even though you started it.”

“You punched me first.”

“No, you punched me first. I wasn’t even chirping you!”

“You punched me at dinner,” Rozanov said. “I couldn’t punch you back at the time. I had to wait.” He grinned sharply. “I needed Shane happy with me that night.”

Hayden grimaced. “Oh God, the edging. Don’t remind me.”

Rozanov shot him a shocked look. “Shane told you about that?”

“No! God no, I just…” He flushed in embarrassment. “I was going to the toilet, I overheard you.”

“Ah.” Rozanov was grinning again. “You understand why I had to wait to punch you back, then. I had big reward waiting for me if I was well-behaved.”

Rozanov chuckled. “You have forehead veins. Calm down.”

Hayden did not dignify him with a response.

Half an hour into the drive, Hayden realised his phone was about to die. “You got a charger?” he asked tersely.

“I think there is one in glovebox,” Rozanov said.

Hayden nodded, opening it, and immediately snatched his hands back. “Fuck! Why the fuck are there condoms and lube in here?!”

Rozanov snorted. “You and Lady Pike do not have hot sex in expensive sports cars, Mr Fifteen Minutes?”

Hayden gagged.

“Relax, Pike, they won’t hurt you. Are not used.” Then his brows furrowed. “Um, I think. Maybe don’t look too hard.”

“Gross,” Hayden told him, delicately retrieving the charger and slamming the glovebox back shut.

Rozanov laughed. “I am kidding. You think Shane would let me leave used condoms lying around?”

“...Whatever. Stop torturing me, man.”

“But is so fun!” Rozanov’s grin was large, as he drummed his fingers on the steering wheel.

“You’re the worst.”

But they managed to settle back into a stiff silence, as whatever music Rozanov had playing gave them a sufficient excuse to ignore each other. Hayden replied to Jackie’s text letting him know she and Jade were home safely, and scrolled through social media until he started to feel car sick.

Rozanov seemed to think the speed limit was more of a suggestion than a rule, Hayden noticed. He had his window down as well, smoking as he sped down the highway with the radio on. He looked exactly the picture of trouble he would warn his daughters about if a car like this ever overtook them on the road.

“I have children, you know,” Hayden said eventually. “I’d rather not die before any of them even reach double digits.”

Rozanov blew a dismissive raspberry, but did slow his speed down until it was exactly the limit. “You are like Hollander,” he said. “I am good driver, not going to crash.”

“That’s what everyone who crashes says.”

“I would not crash when there is precious cargo in vehicle.”

Hayden eyed him suspiciously. “...What, me?” he frowned.

“No, me.”

Hayden groaned, rolling his eyes. It was then that Rozanov’s phone was buzzing insistently, from where it had been placed in the cupholder.

“Check that for me, will you?”

Hayden sighed, but grabbed the man’s phone. “Some girl Jane is texting you.”

“Open it, tell me what they say.”

“What’s the code?”

“Fourteen ten.”

Hayden unlocked the phone, opening the text thread.

Jane: hows it going

Jane: dont be an asshole please

Jane: be good and i’ll blow you later ❤️

Hayden switched the phone off immediately, gripping it so hard his knuckles went tight. “You fucking bastard,” he swore.

“What?”

“You know, I never fucking liked you, but I thought you actually fucking cared about Shane at least. Pull over, I’m getting out of this fucking car.”

“Pike, what is problem?”

“My problem is some random girl in your phone saying she’s going to blow you later!”

Rozanov began to smile. “Is Jane sending dirty texts? Really?”

“Jesus man, you’re so fucked up! I mean it, pull over!”

“Pike,” Rozanov said, deadpan. “Use your head, please. Who do you think Jane is?”

“I don’t give a shit, I know it’s not-” Oh. Jane. Shane. Hayden felt his cheeks burn. “Oh.”

“Yes. Secret relationship, code names. Keep up.”

“...Sorry,” Hayden mumbled.

“More importantly, did he really say he was going to blow me?”

“Yeah, if you aren’t an asshole.”

“Ah.” Rozanov nodded slowly. “We will see if it’s worth it. You can tell him that.”

“Fuck off.” Hayden reopened the phone anyway.

Ilya: its hayden. rozanov is driving and i really didnt need to read that.

Jane: shit! sorry hayd, i should have thought!

Ilya: rozanov is being an asshole btw. do NOT blow him later

Jane: …we’ll see

Hayden sighed heavily. Jane/Shane, Jesus Christ. Those two thought they were so funny.

Suddenly, a terrible thought occurred to him.

“Wait a second,” he said. “If Shane is Jane, does that mean you’re Lily?”

Rozanov’s eyes climbed impossibly high. “You knew about Lily, and me and Shane, and never put that together? Pike, I am starting to worry about you. How many concussions have you had?”

“Fuck off!”

“Fifteenth best player, fifteen minutes, is your IQ fifteen as well?”

“I said fuck off!”

Rozanov snorted. “Yes, I am Lily.”

“Oh God, that makes so much sense,” Hayden groaned. “I thought she was, like, some married chick or something. Didn’t make sense after knowing about you, though.”

“Yes, we are very smart. Used our wits to hide from brain-damaged hockey players for many years. We should consult for KGB.”

Hayden shook his head, laughing despite himself. “Jane and Lily, God. I can’t believe I never clocked it.”

An hour into the drive, they had to stop for gas. Hayden went into the shop while Rozanov was picking up the car, selecting a Redbull and energy bar that would hopefully keep him going until he reached the arena.

He noticed Rozanov entering the shop as well, and selecting one of the bouquets of flowers they had displayed by the windows. Hayden kept his eyes on him as he purchased them and a pack of gum, and all the way back to the car. Rozanov said nothing as he placed the flowers carefully on the backseat.

“You get Shane flowers?” Hayden asked skeptically.

“No.”

Rozanov didn’t offer up any more information, and even though Hayden was curious now, he also didn’t want to go through another Jane/Shane debacle. Rozanov pulled out of the gas station and started to smirk.

“Only gift Hollander wants is my dick.”

“Dude, shut up.”

Rozanov cackled as he rejoined the highway.

“...So,” Hayden said. “Ottawa, huh? It’s really happening.”

“Oh yes,” Rozanov said happily. “You will get to see much more of me, Mr Fifteen.”

Hayden rolled his eyes. “Can’t wait.”

Rozanov winked at him.

“Will you miss Boston, do you think?”

Rozanov was quiet for a while. “...I will miss the team,” he said slowly. “And winning, probably. I would have liked another Stanley Cup.”

“Ottawa is terrible.”

“I am aware.”

“You really think it’s going to be worth it?”

“Yes,” Rozanov said simply. “I still win best prize.”

Hayden nodded, managing a half-smile. He didn’t much like Rozanov, but he’d accepted that he and Shane were happy together, at this point. “So what are you actually doing in Ottawa?” Hayden asked. “Are you really just following Shane around?”

“No,” Rozanov said. “I have house viewing. I scheduled it for when Hollander could be in Ottawa too, he has lots of opinions on these sorts of things. I go see it today, take him for another viewing tomorrow after his game.”

“Yeah, I remember him and Jackie talking non-stop when we got our kitchen redone.”

Rozanov smiled fondly. “Yes. He says this house must have indoor pool, gym… lots of thoughts on kitchen things I don’t care about.”

“I was never into all that stuff either. If it has a fridge and an oven then that’s all I need, y’know?”

“Yes, well, I have my own opinions.”

“Like what?”

“Spare room must be big enough for sex swing.”

“Ew.”

“We cannot have it in our actual bedroom, I think that would be too much. I am classy man. But I think one of the spare rooms should have sex swing and stripper pole.”

“You’re the worst.”

Rozanov glanced at him. “You are not even going red,” he said, sounding disappointed.

“You’ve desensitized me.”

“Ah. I will have to try harder.”

“Please, don’t.”

~~

They finally reached Ottawa, and Hayden was about ready to be done with this car ride and get to the rink. He noticed Rozanov making a wrong turn.

“Uh, this isn’t the way to the arena,” Hayden pointed out.

“I know. We are making pit stop, will not take long.” Rozanov dug the pack of gum out of his pocket, squeezing a stick out and starting to chew it rather aggressively.

Hayden frowned. “Shane’s gonna be mad, I’m already late.”

“Shane can blame me for extra ten minutes.” Rozanov continued going the wrong way, steering the car into a suburban neighbourhood. Hayden watched, his interest piqued, as Rozanov parked on a random driveway and turned the engine off. He fussed with his hair for a few seconds, and spat the gum out into a receipt, breathing on his hand like he was checking his breath. Then he grabbed the flowers and got out of the car.

“Stay here,” he told Hayden.

“...Okay?”

Rozanov shut the door and walked up to the large detached house, ringing the doorbell. Then Yuna and David were opening the door, and Hayden’s mouth fell open in shock as he saw Rozanov kiss Yuna’s cheek, handing her the flowers, and shake David’s hand.

Hayden watched, mouth open, as Yuna deposited the flowers inside the house and the three of them walked back to the car. Rozanov opened the door for them, pulling his chair forward and helping both of them into the back.

“Oh, hello Hayden,” Yuna said, sounding surprised.

“Hi,” Hayden said blankly.

“Pike missed team bus,” Rozanov said, putting his chair back and getting back into the car. “I am told to give him lift.”

“That’s nice of you,” Yuna said.

Rozanov smiled at her through the rearview mirror. “Is no problem,” he said - not even sounding sarcastic! Hayden scoffed quietly.

“Yuna and David are coming with me to see house,” Rozanov told him, pulling out of the driveway. He had not turned back on his blaring music, Hayden noticed, and he was driving much more carefully.

“Oh really?” Hayden grinned, feeling a little bit evil. “Are you gonna tell them about your plans?”

“What plans?” David asked.

Rozanov actually looked alarmed for a second. “For indoor pool,” he said, shooting daggers at Hayden with his eyes. “Shane wants.”

Hayden snorted, deciding to leave it alone.

“How was the drive?” Yuna asked.

“Was good,” Rozanov replied. “We make good time. I am excited to show you the place, I think you will like.”

“We’re just happy you’ll be so nearby, darling.”

Rozanov fucking beamed at her. “Yes, me too.”

Hayden was so fucking lost. He had never seen Rozanov act like a gentleman - even around Shane, he acted like a fucking menace. But around Shane’s parents he had transformed into what was practically a nice young man; it was mindboggling. And even more so, Yuna and David seemed to genuinely like Rozanov in return.

“Are you two going to come to the game this evening?” Hayden asked.

“Not this time,” David said.

“Ilya can’t go, obviously,” Yuna added. “So we’re going to be watching it at home with him. We’ll be cheering you on from the couch, though.”

Rozanov was glancing at them through the mirror again. “Is not necessary,” he murmured, almost bashful. “I can watch alone, is no problem.”

“Nonsense,” Yuna said firmly. “Besides, I’m going to make you my lasagne, remember? No Shane to complain about the carbs.”

“That sounds wonderful,” Rozanov said, “thank you.”

Hayden was seriously wondering where this man had come from, and if he could stick around.

It was then that Rozanov pulled to a stop, and Hayden realised they’d made it to the rink.

“There you go, Pike,” Rozanov said. “Got you there in plenty of time.”

“Yeah,” Hayden said, looking at him. “Thanks, man. Seriously.”

Rozanov nodded once. “Is fine, do not worry. Tell your kid to get better soon.”

“Will do.” Hayden jumped out of the car, and watched as it peeled away before heading into the arena. Maybe Rozanov wasn’t actually the worst guy in the world, he decided. Still an annoying dickhead though.
