Four Possibilities For Shane's Renter, And One That's True

by sparkysparky

Summary

There are a lot of fun possibilities on who could rent the other flat in Shane's Montreal Sex Building. Here are a few possibilities. One is true.

Notes

This was just a silly little tumblr drabble that has since expanded into something of a tumblr drabble universe, so I thought I'd collect them all here, starting with this one. I might expand on each of these more at a later date, but for now, it's just a little thought experiment. #5 is the one that lead to what is becoming a series of connected drabbles & ficlets. You can find them all in the Series here on AO3.

Chapter 1

There's a renter next door to Shane's sex loft.

That dude (gender neutral) had to know something was going on -- Ilya and Shane are not quiet. Or subtle. Even if they think they are. They're 19/20/21 years old when Shane buys the Montreal Sex Chateau (TM), and even if Shane uses a rental agency to manage the next door loft, there's still the stairwell and contracts and all that.

Anyway, that lady (gender neutral) absolutely knows something is going on next door, but the rent is great, the property is quiet, and most of the time the loft next door is empty. So what if the only time it's occupied is when Boston's hockey team is in town? That's sus but Canadians are great at minding their business.

However, for fun, here's a few options for an outsider point of view:

  1. Middle aged divorced dad. He's just trying to get through the day, and not cry himself to sleep because he was a dumbshit and forgot to show his wife how much he loved her. Now she's shacked up with the ski instructor, and he sees his kids every other weekend, and he knows it's his fault. He's getting better, though. His neighbor is the Metros' new rookie, but he signed a non-disclosure agreement when he signed the rental contract so he can't even tell anyone. That's all right now. He has no one to tell. He was able to get his kids' Hollander's autograph though. That was nice. He didn't manage to nab the visiting Raider's autograph. That was fine. The non-disclosure agreement probably would have stopped him from giving it to anyone. Plus, the Raiders sucked.
  2. A grandma who is worried at first about renting from a hockey star. They throw very loud parties filled with drugs and women! She could possibly catch a veneral disease from the stairwell! But, as it turns out, this Shane Hollander is very respectful and helps carry her groceries up the stairs. He's quiet, and not at home very often--travels a lot for that game of his. She watches him on the television sometimes, but it's such a violent game. She worries about him, and tells him that whenever she sees him. He doesn't have parties, and really the only time she ever hears anything is when that other very nice man comes to visit. Then there is a lot of banging and yelling, but she assumes it's just boys being boys. It's good that the nice young man has such a good friend. And, when it gets very loud, well, she can take out her hearing aids for a night.
  3. A couple of grad students who are perpetually sleep deprived and distracted with their upcoming thesis defense to notice the professional hockey players fucking next door. They've got deadlines, the library closes in an hour, and Debra fucking Fortaine just blew holes in every single one of their hypotheses.
  4. Similarly to above, a couple of first year residents who are home less than Shane. Between their hospital rotations, drama of who is fucking whom, and dealing with emergency room trauma, they don't have time to worry about the hockey stars playing out their own soap opera next door. They'll worry about it when one or the other of them is bleeding out in the stairwell. Until then, it's not their problem.
  5. Arthur, who has his own situationship going on with a very annoying forger, and is the reason Shane's basic building security is actually a lot more efficient than he realizes. Shane doesn't know it, but Arthur has quite a few connections to Shane. He's related to Shane's best friend's wife, for one. He worked for Shane's father for a time in the early 2000s, for another. He's done an extensive background check on Shane, and everyone in Shane's orbit. For security purposes. But that, friends, is another story entirely.

Chapter 2: Arthur Headcanons

Chapter Summary

Just a few headcanons for this drabbleverse (Some others will become clear in future additions)

To expand on this, I'll just share a few Arthur (Inception) headcanons that have been living in my head for 16 years:

  1. He's Canadian
  2. He has apartments all over, but definitely Montreal and Ottawa
  3. He and Eames have been dancing around each other for a couple of decades by the time the movie happens
  4. (New) He's a Metros fan, and strongly considered sabotage when he found out Shane was fucking the most beloathed Raiders player, Ilya Rozanov. Eames talked him out of it. The exchange went like this:

Eames: I can sense you're contemplating murder, pet

Arthur: Not murder. Just a little light maiming.

Eames: That's nice, but how about you come rob this museum with me, kitten? Leave the hockey kids to their fucking, and let's have some fun of our own.

Arthur hates that this works.
