My Other Brother, Arthur

Summary

Jackie Pike has several brothers and brothers-in-law. Shane Hollander has unknowingly known one of them all along.

Notes

This is a shamefully self-indulgent thing that has become something of a ficlet series on Tumblr, and might be expanded into something bigger later. Inception is my forever fandom, Heated Rivalry is my new fandom, and somehow I've clashed the two together first via Shane's empty flat in the sex building, and now via Jackie Pike. Unbetad like a boss.

So it's canon that Jackie Pike has brothers or brothers in law, right? One of those is the guy Hayden is complaining about during The Cottage Scene.

The other?

Is Shane Hollander's renter, a mild-mannered guy named Arthur. Probably an accountant, is what Shane thinks when he meets him to sign the paperwork. But this isn't Shane's story.

Anyway, Arthur originally rented the flat next door from this Hollander guy when the young man started spending so much time with Jackie and the kids and Jackie's annoyingly bland hockey player husband. There are other reasons he chose this flat, but they're not relevant to this story. They might become relevant later. But for right now, the only relevant detail is that Arthur [Last Name Redacted] is very protective of his younger sister.

(The fact that his new landlord is SHANE HOLLANDER, hockey super star and captain of Arthur's favorite team, is beside the point. If this guy is going to be around his little sister--"We're literally 6 minutes apart, you giant doofus"--well, Arthur needs to vet the guy, and he also needs a Montreal flat.)

("Not very accountant like of you, kitten," is what Eames says, when he breaks in and snoops through the admittedly very bland research Arthur's dug up on his brother in law's new best friend. The most sensational detail is, "Oh, your hockey idol is having an illicit affair with the Russian from Boston? Pet, you are having a very bad day, and I say that knowing you were shot at this morning in Prague.

"Shut up, Eames," Arthur said, from his position facedown on the couch. He'd been there for the past five minutes, ever since he'd thrown the dossier with the damning evidence across the room. "And you were the one shooting at me."

Eames laughed and tossed the folder over his shoulder. "Just a little foreplay Arthur Darling. Don't be too cross with me." He moved to the other side of the room and settled himself on top of Arthur, who made a soft noise of complaint but didn't move to flip him off so Eames decided his presence was welcome.

"All my anger is for Hollander. If Jackie knew--"

"Your sister would find it romantic and you know it." Eames pressed a kiss against the back of Arthur's neck. "She's the biggest fan of rivals to lovers, after all." Eames paused. "Well, she's the biggest fan of your biggest rival."

"That was terrible, and one day I'm going to tell her you said that." Arthur belied the words with a laugh and by twisting beneath Eames enough to be able to kiss him properly. After a moment he broke off to add, "If his father--"

"Arthur. I really don't want to talk about anyone's father's right now. Your landlord is a grown man--old enough to be a landlord and if he wants to fuck a hot Russian, the only thing you should tell him is 'Congratulations'." Eames kissed Arthur again to stave off any further arguments, or talks about a certain someone's father. "The only hot guy you should worry about fucking, is me."

Arthur had no argument for that, and went about his business without further thought about what his research had turned up. On the floor behind the couch, the dossier lay forgotten, the information kept safe by Jackie Pike's Definitely Not An Accountant Brother, and his forger boyfriend)

Almost a decade later Shane finally meets Jackie's Other Brother Arthur, and Arthur's husband Eames, at his and Ilya's wedding. Shane recognizes him, and is very confused.

He only gets more confused (and a little creeped out if he has to be honest) when he opens the wedding present.

Arthur gifts him the dossier. In it is a picture from the stairwell, of that first time in Montreal. And a note, "Congratulations. Always check for hidden cameras in stairwells. Best, Arthur and Eames."
