David Hollander, Pointman

by sparkysparky

Summary

David Hollander has a past, and it shows up in an unexpected place.

Notes

More entirely self-indulgent crossover shenanigans, this time featuring David Hollander and his unexpected past as a dreamshare pointman. This is one of those ideas that popped randomly in my head and I ran with it, and now I'm obsessed, so expect this to grow on it's on. But for now, this is what it is. Unbetad like a boss.

David Hollander, Pointman

Former dreamshare pointman David Hollander. He kind of just fell into the legal side of things during his work for the Canadian government, did a few not quite illegal but definitely not fully sanctioned jobs when Shane was young--Yuna was fully all-in on the hockey stuff early on, and David needed some form of enrichment, okay? And that young American Dom Cobb was a fast talker and needed an experienced pointman for a job on a pharmaceutical rep taking advantage of Canadian seniors.

And maybe a few of the jobs after that were a little shadier than David liked, but he was a good pointman and no one ever died on his watch. Anyway, there weren't many before he introduced Dom to his intern, Arthur, who took to dreamsharing like he'd been born for it, and David was happy to take a step back and keep the dreamshare fully on the up and up, and take fewer and fewer jobs as Shane's future in hockey really seemed to be coming to something. By the time Shane and Ilya get married in 2018, he's fully retired from the business. (He only misses it a little bit.)

So color him surprised when he sees an old, familiar face at the reception.

He hadn't seen Arthur in over a decade, since the young man had disappeared after the mysterious death of Cobb's wife--suicide had been the official story, but David still had enough dreamshare contacts to know that wasn't the *whole* story--so to see him chatting casually with Shane and Ilya, arm around Hayden Pike's wife, all of them laughing as scruffy man in a garish suit told some, from the look of it, outlandish story.

Later, when he managed to get Arthur alone, he clapped the younger man on the back. "Not that I'm not happy to see you're still alive, but what are you doing here, Arthur?"

"Jackie's my sister," he said, with a small smile. "And I was also Shane's renter, for a time, in Montreal. It's a small world, David." He didn't expand. "It's good to see you again."

David didn't have time to answer, as Yuna came by with a schedule update, comments about various social media posts that needed to be managed, and a thousand different other things related to both the foundation and to Shane and Ilya themselves. Before David could encourage her to take a breath and enjoy the day, she was off to see to something else. He turned back to Arthur, who was grinning. His dimples were on display this time.

"You know, I've thought a few times about seducing your wife into dreamshare, David. You too, of course, but your wife would be formidable." David was alarmed to note that Arthur's choice of words might have been deliberate. He was more alarmed to find he wasn't as alarmed as maybe he should be.

He shook that off, and followed Arthur's gaze as his wife seemed to put out three invisible fires at once. "I think she'd have better odds of seducing you into hockey." Yuna Hollander would leave hockey when she was dead, David was sure of that.

Arthur laughed. "You might be right about that." He sighed. "If you two ever want to dip your toes, you know where to find me."

David was about to point out that he didn't have Arthur's number, when his phone beeped. He glanced at it. He had a text from an unknown number. He hadn't seen Arthur send anything.

My darling Arthur says you're the mastermind behind the Polar Vortex job of 2002. I was on the other side of that, and got a shot in the ass. Cheers, mate. I owe you one. You ever want to even the score, call me. - E.

"That'll be Eames. Now you know how to find us. If you ever want to. Go dance with your wife, David. I'm going to find my worse half, and do the same."

As Arthur fades into the crowd, David decides to take that advice.

And maybe, someday, call that unknown number.

Maybe.
