Shane held out his phone to Ilya, “Ha, you’ll love this, you love this meme.”

Ilya’s eyes lit up, “Hollanov! And they know about my heart eyes.”

“The whole world knows about your heart eyes,” said Shane, kissing Ilya softly. 

Ilya leaned into the kiss, “Lyublyu tebya.”

Shane lets his phone drop from his fingers like water, tumbling forgotten onto the couch. It doesn’t matter how loud the voices of the outside world are – and they are loud – both in support of and against them, because they’re in it together.

Later, when Ilya’s sleeping naked beside him, Shane’s awake and – he can admit – a little obsessively scrolling.

Lots of the posts and discussions are more positive than he’d hoped. He’d been pleasantly surprised by that when they’d been outed, and when they’d confirmed their relationship. But he was still Shane Hollander. He’d always focused on the critics, on the disappointed, he’d always heard those voices the loudest, been compelled to prove them wrong. Those voices were loud in the small hours of the night.

I wanted to talk about some of Ilya’s instagram posts because I was looking back at them the other day and they’re literally all about Shane. 

Note: I did ask Shane if it was okay to post this, he seemed confused about why anyone would care now that they’re out, but said this was okay. I’m only including the posts I definitely KNOW about, and skipping any I don’t have any background/context for

May 12: Ilya gets this loon tattoo for Shane, which is a reference to Shane’s cottage they spend their summers at and where they became an official couple

June 19: half crumpled Yahtzee scoresheet, players are identified by initials, I = Ilya, S = Shane, D = [Shane’s] Dad/David,Y = Yuna, family game night, pretty sure he only posted this because he won and Shane was in last

July 3: this post was crazy to me, it’s just like two plates on a kitchen counter but that’s CLEARLY Shane Hollander’s cottage, which there’s a fucking Architectural Digest Home Tour of on the internet

August 14: two pairs of running shoes by the door. Even I’m not weird enough to say I know EVERY pair of shoes Shane and Ilya own, but like.. Those are CLEARLY Shane’s favorite Reeboks, he’s been photographed in them multiple times including in Ottawa at the Game Changers hockey camp that happened in July

September 4: two plates again, wouldn’t have even mentioned except that Ilya posted and that’s definitely Shane’s coffee table in his condo in Brossard

October 15: two plastic heart rings, which are from them getting “married” by Hayden Pike’s kids while babysitting

November 3: yoga ball in his home gym. Ilya does not do yoga. Shane Hollander famously does

November 29: a completed puzzle, Ilya does these puzzles with David, Shane’s dad, when Shane’s on the road and Ottawa’s at home

December 10: this one’s not about Shane specifically but Ilya posts a photo of some drinks at the MLH’s first (and so far only) resident gay bar The Kingfisher

December 25: foosball table, pretty self-explanatory but Shane got it for him

Shane waited for Ilya to finish reading. His face was very blank as he worked through the very long English post. Ilya finally looked up, “Is not Rose?”

Shane shook his head, “No.”

Ilya nodded slowly, “Why did you let this be posted?”

Shane winced, “Are you mad? I just thought – people are acting like we’re not in love. Like I wasn’t there right alongside you this whole time. Like you’ll rip the rug out from under me and go back to fucking women every night.”

Ilya’s eyebrows shot up, “I would not!”

“I know,” said Shane soothingly, “And you can tease me for being jealous if you want, but I don’t think that’s what this is. I just thought… maybe if someone else pointed at one little thing you did to express your love for me, that it might change things a bit.”

Ilya kissed him, “I love you so fucking much, Hollander.”

“I love you more,” said Shane, smiling.

Never one to be outdone, Ilya pulled Shane down against his chest, “I love you most. Now who wrote this because I know you did not. You would not have a throwaway account.”

Shane grinned against the bare skin at the collar of Ilya’s t-shirt. “Can’t reveal my source. They’re already working on their next post.”

Ilya laughed and kissed him. But Shane wasn’t joking.

Shane Hollander WAS driven out of Montreal

Throwaway for reasons that will be obvious, but the mods can verify I am who I claim to be. I’m a close personal friend of Shane Hollander and through Shane I’ve become close with Ilya Rozanov. 

There’s been a lot of speculation about why Shane left Montreal. 

I had a front row seat to this as I know all of the Montreal players and their partners/spouses/families. 

It started when Shane came out. Reactions were… lukewarm at best? Pike was supportive, and Boiziau, but most of the room wished he hadn’t said anything. Real ask don’t tell kinda shit. They weren’t hostile or anything, they just didn’t want to get used to the idea. And it was an idea, because Shane Hollander was with Ilya Rozanov before he ever told Monteal he was gay. He was actively hiding that he was in a relationship at all. He wasn’t shoving his relationship in their faces, and anyone who knows hockey knows that the opposite was NOT true, and there were constant probably pretty graphic discussions around some of their hookups with women.

Shane Hollander is the hardest working hockey player in the league. He probably doesn’t need to be, he’s always been a top tier talent. But he’s the best player because he has the work ethic to back it up. He threw himself into working harder, he has always LOVED and NEEDED to win, but this was like a preemptive measure, making up for the perceived deficiency of being gay, being gay and being in love with Ilya Rozanov.

Someone definitely ran their mouth after Shane came out, because though it remained a vague rumor, that rumor definitely spread enough around the league that most people deemed it credible. 

I found out about Shane and Ilya around this time, and I was honored to help safeguard their relationship for the last few years. Anyone who thinks they ever CONSIDERED any kind of collusion or anything like that is absolutely talking out of their ass. These two men HATE losing, and they hate losing to EACH OTHER more than anything. I actually do not know how Ilya stayed in Ottawa when the Centaurs were in their like eighteenth rebuild. They at their grown age of thirty wouldn’t let a five year old win at Go Fish. 

The WORST thing that these two have ever done for hockey was Ilya trading to Ottawa. But players trade to other teams for all KINDS of reasons, and he’s hardly the first or last hockey player to trade for love. And Boston’s loss has been Ottawa’s game. Ottawa may have had a reputation for being the worst hockey, but they’ve also turned out to be a mecca for queer players, with three out players on their roster. You can buy talented players, you can buy better coaches, but you can’t buy good energy in the room. And that’s what Ottawa has had consistently in the new world of openly queer MLH players. And more teams should try it, whether they have out players on their team or not.

I don’t know which of them proposed the charity but that was a genius move. There was a bit of locker room talk about it and my understanding from knowing other WAGs and other players in other franchises is that there was some of that outside of Montreal. The hockey camps are a beautiful effort, you can tell Shane and Ilya both care deeply about the camps themselves and the campaigns the camps support. I thought they’d be seen together a lot more. And they were, since before that they hadn’t been seen together at all. But they stayed careful. More careful than I thought they needed to be.

Earlier this year, the Shane Hollander is gay rumor made it out of the locker rooms and into the office of the Commissioner. Crowell called Shane in, told him they didn’t want to hear him speak about it on any kind of public platform. That the league respected Scott Hunter but they did not want a repeat. IF Shane wanted to come out the league wanted a finger in that pie so they could control it. 

Shane and Ilya’s plan was to live in secret until they both retired. These are the two best players in a generation. They could easily play into their 40s. Ten, fifteen, maybe close to twenty more years of hiding. After so many years already. 

And then the Centaurs plane caught on fire. Shane proposed. That they get married and come out in the summer. The end was finally in sight. They were going into a shitstorm, but they were going together on their own terms. 

And then the video.

Listen, you should NEVER send a video without doing a thorough check of what’s in every frame of it. Hayden Pike fucked up BIG. But I curse Brad. Whoever you are, Brad, Hayden Pike made you a nice video for your birthday. He didn’t notice his best friend and his best friend’s secret boyfriend making out in a reflection of the window, but you did not have to take that video and post it on the fucking internet. You are a clout chaser and you did not think about the implications that would have on ANYONE’s life but your own. 

Crowell ordered both of them benched. My understanding is Wiebe wasn’t into it but not given a choice. Theriault was on board with sitting Hollander out. Pike was the only one who would talk to Shane, though I think Boiziau was more hurt that Shane had a secret from him than the Rzanov factor, at least initially. 

Crowell called them both for a meeting this time and informed them the league would be stating that this was some sort of bizarre prank on Pike. He told them not to get married, not to post, and that doing so would be bad for their careers. I won’t share the exact phrasing of the meeting, but it was not supportive. They walked out. They posted the confirmation instagram statement.

The league bent, they were un-benched.

Ottawa’s hot streak continued right through to game 7 of the playoffs. I assume the hockey reddit doesn’t need me to explain the stakes. And that’s without the whole world recently finding out that the opposing team captains are together.

Shane Hollander tripped. He caught an edge near centre ice. Ilya Rozanov scored. Montreal’s hopes of a repeat cup win were dashed. The accusation Shane tripped on purpose was nearly universal before the teams got off the ice. Boiziau was the first one to say it to Shane, Pike and Hollander both dismissed it as out of pocket, and allegedly Boiziau walked it back within minutes. No one else on the team did. No one else on the team ever did, nor did they apologize for it. The coaches levied the same accusations. The franchise did nothing to dispel the media. 

There was no way Shane Hollander could captain a team that believed he was a traitor. A cheater. There was no way a man that good at hockey, that proud to play in the MLH, could ever put on a Voyageurs jersey again and represent the franchise that failed him. 

He didn’t ask the team to like him, he didn’t ask the team to like his relationship. He just asked them to let him play hockey with some dignity and respect. Like he had for over ten years. Montreal should be ashamed of themselves. Not just the players, but the coaches and the management who let that room have that energy. Ottawa’s team adapted just fine. Ilya Rozanov’s playing great hockey. Troy Barrett’s playing great hockey. Shane Hollander is playing great fucking hockey. Just not in Montreal.

Rozanov used to be photographed with Segei Vetrov’s daughter Svetlana Vetrova pretty regularly, even when his “manwhore” phase started to slow down. She works for the Bears since the end of last season and she was at Rozanov and Hollander’s wedding (maybe as Ilya’s best man??)

Can’t believe Shane Hollander got married before revealing he was actually fucking hilarious

 

Ilya set his phone down and waited. His husband came bounding in the back door with Anya hot on his heels, “Ilya!”

Shane stopped short at the look on Ilya’s face. Predictably, Shane went from a great mood to catastrophizing in a single breath, “Is something wrong? There’s no more secrets to leak? Did my parents call or something –?”

“Moya lyubov,” Ilya heard his voice break a little, “You did not say how bad things were. For so long.”

“It wasn’t so bad,” Shane said, and Ilya knew that he already knew about the reddit post, even though his phone was sitting on the kitchen counter charging from the pervious night. “Not really, over time. It's just… when it’s all laid out back to back like that on paper it looks worse than it really was.”

“Shane.”

Shane rubbed his face, “I know, but, I just hoped, if I was good enough it would be forgotten. If I was winning us cups, that would make up for –” Shane shook his head, “Even after the video, when the whole world found out, and things were awful, I still thought – right up until J.J. asked me if I tripped on purpose. Guys I played my entire MLH career with. I knew they hated you, I knew they hated that I was gay, hated us, but it wasn’t until then that I realized they would always hate me.”

Ilya reaches for his husband, “You did not deserve that, moya kartoshka.”

Shane let out a shaky laugh, “Potato?”

“Potato,” Ilya confirms, scraping his teeth against Shane’s cheek playfully. 

Shane twists a little, tucking them tighter against one another, “I love you so fucking much.”

Ilya asks, “Are you going to confirm what the post says? When the media asks about it?” Not if, when, because they will ask. 

Shane shrugs, “Nothing in there that isn’t true.”

Ilya sits them both down at the kitchen island, “I read the post. There is a lot of information about us in there. More than we have ever said.”

“I know,” said Shane, “I read it.”

Ilya narrows his eyes at Shane, “When did you read it?”

“The other night,” said Shane, “In an email. Are you upset?”

“Not upset,” said Ilya slowly, “I wish you had told me that Montreal was this bad. But everything else is okay, I think. But I did not think you wanted so many details to be public. It is not anyone’s business, yes?”

Shane’s beautiful face flushed, “I started thinking a while ago that while I don’t really care what people think anymore, and I don’t think that anyone is entitled to the details of our relationship… It's kind of impossible to ignore that people have thoughts. Opinions. Assumptions.”

“Yes,” agreed Ilya, “We are very famous hockey players, very hot and sexy, it is natural that people are curious.”

“Well a lot of people are wrong,” said Shane, “About us. And I was thinking about writing my own posts. But I’m not a great writer, not a big social media guy, anything I wrote would just add fuel to the fire. So I just… asked if a few things could be added to the post. The Crowell meeting, and the engagement and the rest was pretty much in there already.”

Ilya grinned, “You want everyone to know that you asked me to marry you.”

Shane’s face flushes again, but he doesn’t look embarrassed, “I want the world to know that I would give up anything for you. But that I shouldn’t have fucking had to.”

Ilya kisses Shane again, hard this time. 

Shane pulls away slightly, “How long do you think before anyone figures out who it is?”

Ilya shrugs, “Maybe a few hours. Maybe never. Internet is very smart, and also sometimes very stupid.”

Shane rubs a hand on the back of his neck, “How long before anyone we know?”

Ilya considers, “Everyone knows it’s not them. And not Rose. It is probably obvious it’s not your parents, too many Shane Hollanders, not how mothers or fathers write about their children.” Ilya shrugs, “I think you do not have many other friends who would know these things. They will probably think it is Hayden Pike. Or Scott Hunter.”

Shane considers that, “I don’t want them to get in trouble. Especially Hayden. He’s kinda locked in in Montreal for now. And the kids and Jackie…”

Ilya brushes his thumb across Shane’s cheek, gently tilts his jaw so Shane is looking at him, “Jackie Pike is a very good friend. And she knew what she was doing when she wrote that post. No matter what happens.”
