Hockey Players Read Hockey Romance

by The_Lady_Disdain

Summary

What happens when a rookie's girlfriend sends him with a copy of The Deal by Elle Kennedy?

“What are you guys doing?” Troy asks. Then he looks to Shane. “Do I even want to know?”

Shane shakes his head, Luca doing the same, but Ilya is already answering, “Reading smut Pointy’s girl gave him.”

“I wanna see!”

Notes

I am a little bit obsessed with the videos of hockey players reading hockey romance books, so here is my take on it. I wrote this to theoretically take place not long after my fic Sweetheart, but really there's no tie-in except for the mention of LaPointe's as-of-yet unnamed girlfriend, so there is no need to read that first.

The only smut in here comes from a quote pulled from The Deal by Elle Kennedy. The quotes are italicized, and obviously they are not mine and credit goes to her.

As always, I use absolutely no AI either and just to be safe, I do not allow anyone to enter my work into AI, thank you.

Chapter 1: The Incident

Shane doesn’t realize the plane is suspiciously quiet until the rookies explode.

He’s sitting next to Ilya, his head resting on his husband’s shoulder, his book mostly closed with a finger stuck between the pages for safekeeping. Ilya has his headphones on, bobbing his head lightly with the beat as he absently runs his fingers through Shane’s hair.

Then the eruption.

“Yoooooo!” one shouts. Young, maybe?

“What the fuck?” Definitely Holmberg.

Shane debates whether he wants to investigate. He’s comfy here, half in danger of falling asleep without a proper bookmark, and he’s not the captain. But Ilya’s already sliding off his headphones and peering back curiously.

“People read this shit?” Holmberg again. “You read this shit?!”

“Dude!” Young cackles.

Sighing, Shane grabs the bookmark and replaces his finger. Ilya’s already clambering over him to find out the source of the commotion. Shane follows him to the back of the plane, where the rookies sit like trouble-making kids on a school bus.

“What is going on?” Ilya questions.

They scramble. Something disappears into LaPointe’s bag. Now they’re the kids who got caught by teacher. Their faces all show varying degrees of guilt, embarrassment, and obviously fake innocence. All except for Luca, who, despite his furious blush, is looking at his fellows rookies skeptically.

“What is it?” Ilya presses. “You are not in trouble.” Then he tilts his head. “Unless you should be. Should you be?”

There’s no answer.

He turns to Luca. “Should they be?”

They turn their heads to look at Luca so quick Shane’s half surprised they don’t give themselves whiplash. That’d be great, he thinks. Three of their rookies out for the next who-knows-how-long because they -- grown adults -- were worried about being snitched on… about what sounds to him like a book.

Holmberg’s eyes are wide. LaPointe shakes his head. Young slashes his hand in front of his neck.

Luca shrugs one shoulder. “It’s just a book.”

“Hmm.” Ilya narrows his eyes. “Then what is big deal?” He holds out his hand and flicks his fingers. “Give.”

All eyes snap to LaPointe. He looks desperately to Shane for help. Shane in turn looks pointedly at his bag. Far be it from him to get between Ilya and his drama. If the rookies haven’t learned this by now, it’s past time. His husband sniffs out drama better than Anya sniffs out food.

“Just for the record,” LaPointe starts, “this is my girlfriend’s book. I had no idea what it was.”

“Just get it over with,” Shane advises.

“Rip off the bandaid, man,” Holmberg adds sagely.

Slowly, he pulls the book out of his bag and hands it over to Ilya with a grimace. Ilya inspects the cover: a cartoon illustration of a white couple kissing in front of a hockey net.

He shrugs. “Does not look so bad.”

If possible, their eyes go even wider. Their blushes spread. Maybe it’s a little mean, but Shane is glad that for once it’s not his own cheeks burning.

“Hm, bookmark,” Ilya comments happily.

“No!” four voices echo.

“Please don’t,” LaPointe sighs, like he already knows it’s useless to ask.

Ilya flips through the pages toward the bookmark, too fast to read but slow enough Shane’s all but positive he’s drawing it out to torture the poor rookies. He stops on the bookmarked page, then casually flips backward a few.

“Context.”

Shane doesn’t think any of the rookies are breathing as Ilya skims.

Then his mouth stretches into a grin, and Shane knows -- he just knows -- that Ilya’s about to make them regret every choice that led them here and make them wish they could melt into puddles on the airplane floor.

“With a low growl of approval,” Ilya reads dramatically, and the rookies stare like they see their end coming and know they can’t escape it, “he leans down and wraps his lips around my clit. He sucks hard, simultaneously pushing one finger inside me, and I go off like a rocket launcher.”

A long, silent pause, where -- damn it, Ilya -- Shane feels his own neck turning red. Then Ilya bursts out laughing, so hard he doubles over, gasping in wheezing breaths. More heads turn their way to see the commotion. It goes on long enough that Shane crosses his arms and raises a brow, waiting for Ilya to finish. Finally he straightens.

“You done?” Shane asks.

“Yes, I think so. Maybe.” It’s even less convincing with the way his voice quivers.

Eventually, with what looks like a great deal of effort, Ilya forces his expression into something serious and turns back to LaPointe.

“I am not mad at you, Pointy, just disappointed.”

The rookie actually pales.

“I mean, really,” Ilya continues, “you are so bad at sex that your girlfriend has to give you instruction manual?”

He shakes the book in emphasis.

Nope. Shane absolutely will not laugh. He is nicer than that. Mature.

He can’t say the same for Young and Holmberg, though, whose faces split into wide grins the second it registers they’re not in trouble.

“Dude! He’s right, she totally did!”

“Pointy, are you even sure she hasn’t been faking it this whole time?”

“Fuck off! Of course she hasn’t,” LaPointe snaps. He doesn’t look like he’s as sure as he’d like to be, though. “She just wanted to share a book she likes. So we can talk about it later. Romance is a normal thing for girls to read.”

Ilya raises a brow and opens the book again. LaPointe covers his face with his hands in preparation.

“This is four paragraphs before that,” Ilya announces, then clears his throat. “I suddenly remember how Allie confessed that she had to ‘train’ Sean to do this because he used to go all motorboat on her clit from the word go.”

Holmberg snickers. To his credit, it does sound like he tried to keep it in.

“Motorboat,” Young laughs. “That’s gonna be your new nickname, Pointy.”

“What is?” calls Dykstra from a handful of rows ahead, where he was apparently shamelessly eavesdropping.

“Why?” adds Hayes, even more shameless and a better listener.

“Motorboat!” Young replies. Then he giggles. “Because--”

LaPointe slaps his hand across Young’s mouth. Young must lick it, because suddenly LaPoint yanks it away, shouting, “Ew, that’s fucking gross, man, what the fuck!” and starts wiping his palm on any part of Young he can reach.

“What are you guys doing?” Troy asks. Then he looks to Shane. “Do I even want to know?”

Shane shakes his head, Luca doing the same, but Ilya is already answering, “Reading smut Pointy’s girl gave him.”

“I wanna see!”

Dykstra starts to get out of his seat, Boyle following. Hayes shrugs, admitting curiosity, and also gets up.

“No,” Ilya decides. He hands the book back to LaPointe, who can’t put it away in his bag fast enough. “No smutty books for the rest of you, just for Pointy who has homework from his girlfriend.”

They actually look disappointed. Dykstra even boos.

“Where,” Shane asks, regretting the question even as it leaves his mouth, “did you learn the word smutty?”

Ilya looks at him like it should be obvious. “I have phone, Shane. Access to internet. Social media.”

LaPointe groans. Next to him, Young is whispering, “Mo-tor boat, mo-tor boat, mo-tor boat” with glee.

Holmbergs pats him on the shoulder. “You’ll get there, Pointy.”

“Yes, do not worry, Pointy,” Ilya agrees. “Shane is no good at eating pussy, either.”

The rookies cut off immediately, eyes wide -- again -- in shock.

Shane shoves Ilya. “Fuck you, asshole, I’m gay.”

“Yes,” Ilya says with mock grimness. “Rose Landry knows.”

Holmberg covers his mouth. Luca glances between them like he just walked in on his parents arguing and is sure they’re about to get a divorce.

“I’m not the one who begged for two years, but okay.” Shane shrugs. “I’ll just leave you outside for the loons next time we’re at the cottage. Rose can stay inside with me.”

Ilya’s lip juts out in the perfect little pout. “You would leave me, your darling, perfect, innocent husband, at the mercy of the wolf-birds?”

“No,” Shane says, and he waits for Ilya to perk up before continuing, “I would leave my annoying, second-best-hockey-player, infamous-for-sleeping-his-way-across-North-America husband outside for the loons.”

Then he kisses Ilya’s pouting lower lip and walks back to their seats.

“Damn,” he hears behind him. “Two years? Maybe Hollzy’s the player.”

- - - - -

“What?” Ilya asks Shane as the plane descends. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Why didn’t you let the rest of the team read the book?”

“I don’t know what you mean. Pointy was embarrassed, I am good captain. Is simple.”

“Liar,” Shane accuses affectionately.

“You are right, is not simple because Pointy should not be ashamed of his smutty books. Is not right he has to hide it, romance is nothing to be shy about, and I thought our teammates would be cured of that by now with how we--”

“You know that’s not what I mean,” Shane interrupts. “You had your scheming face on.”

“Okay, okay, maybe I have idea.” He grabs Shane’s hand and kisses the back of it. “Don’t worry, moy lyubimyy. It will be a lot of fun.”

Chapter 2: The Idea

Chapter Summary

After the rookies get caught reading The Deal by Elle Kennedy, Ilya has a brilliant idea for Harris and the social media team: a video of the Centaurs reading hockey romance books.

Chapter Notes

A couple disclaimers: One, I have not read all of the books mentioned in this chapter, and I don't remember everything about the ones I have. This isn't necessarily me recommending any of them, just using whatever ones I found. Two, ignore the fact that I didn't check the publication dates of the books. I am sure the timeline wouldn't match up if I did. I'm here for fun, not historical accuracy. It's all timey-wimey.

See the end of the chapter for more notes

Harris and Gen share a look.

Gen gives an encouraging nod.

With a deep breath, Harris steels himself and clicks the button: post. The video takes a few seconds to load, and then the views start pouring in.

Hockey Players vs. Books: The Ottawa Centaurs Read Hockey Romance

[In frame: Rozanov grins excitedly, and Dykstra tries not to. Sitting on a stool in front of them, LaPointe blushes faintly as he holds a book on his lap.]

Rozanov: Hello, we are the Ottawa Centaurs, the gayest hockey team--

Dykstra: --and today we’re going to read some scenes from popular hockey romance books.

Rozanov: A special thank you to Pointy’s girlfriend.

[LaPointe, who has been avoiding looking directly into the camera, snaps to attention. His eyes are wide. The last part was clearly not scripted.]

- - - CUT - - -

[Boodram holds a book with a bookmark sticking out partway through. The book is not yet open. Hayes stands next to him.]

Boodram: [holds up book] Our first book is Collide by Bal Khabra.

[Boodram opens the book to the bookmarked page. Hayes looks over his shoulder. As he reads, Boodram’s eyebrows rise, and he nods slowly, impressed.]

Boodram: Not bad.

Hayes: That’s… a lot more detail than I was expecting. Huh.

Boodram: Well, yeah, you read comics, like, exclusively. They don’t exactly go into detail on how the characters get off when they’re not fighting crime.

Hayes: Not that you would notice. If you read into it, though, and get to know the characters well enough--

Rozanov [off camera]: Ugh, you guys are boring. Next group! Harris, choose a better book this time.

- - - CUT - - -

[Rozanov reads the back of a book while Barrett glares at someone behind the camera.]

Barrett: I can’t believe you’re making me do this. I’m gay.

Hollander [off camera]: None of us are getting out of this, you know Ilya better than that.

Rozanov: Yes, Shane tried his best, but I won the bet. Hey Harris, why is this book about you and Barrett?

Hollander [off camera]: Only because you cheated.

Barrett: What? Let me see.

[Barrett grabs the book before Rozanov can hand it over and quickly reads the back.]

Barrett: Harris does social media, not PR.

Rozanov: Is close enough.

Barrett: [raises his eyebrows] When he has to deal with you, maybe.

Rozanov: All I post about is Anya and my sexy husband Shane Hollander.

Harris: And Scott Hunter.

Rozanov: Yes, he is dinosaur from creation of Earth. I don’t know why they let him play as dinosaur but didn’t want him playing as gay man. Maybe Shane would still be in Montreal if he was dinosaur, too, not just three-time winner of Stanley Cup. You would think that would be good enough for them, but no, is apparently crime to be clumsy and sexy. And then they pushed him away and he tripped right into my arms and also onto my--

- - - CUT - - -

Harris [off camera]: --behave this time?

[Rozanov looks past the camera to Hollander, who is giving him a stern look.]

Rozanov: [sighs] Fine.

Barrett: Our next book is Cocky Score by Kenna King.

[Rozanov waggles his eyebrows. Off camera, someone clears their throat. Rozanov pouts.]

Rozanov: What is the point of this if I can’t have any fun?

Hollander: It was literally your idea, Ilya. Just read the book.

[Rozanov huffs but does as he’s told. Barrett reaches the sex scene first. His nose scrunches, then he looks away.]

Barrett: Ah, fuck.

Rozanov: [glances up] You can’t even read it?

Barrett: I’ve had sex with girls before, I don’t need to fucking relive it, man.

Rozanov: Oh, so you could read it if it was two men? Just not with a girl? I did not know you are misogynistic, Barrett.

Barrett: How do you even know that word?

Rozanov: Because I read. Unlike you, apparently.

[Barrett rolls his eyes, and Rozanov looks back down at the book. His eyes light up when he reaches the sex scene, and he leans in closer, smiling.]

Rozanov: Is pretty good. Yes, I like. I am better, though. You see, you have to--

[Barrett grabs the book out of Rozanov’s hands and gives it to Harris out of frame.]

Rozanov: No, give it back, I like it, I want to keep reading!

- - - CUT - - -

[Dykstra and Chouinard laugh, shoving each other. Someone off camera clears their throat. They stop and face the camera, then hold up a book together.]

Chouinard: Our third book is Behind the Net by Stephanie Archer.

Dykstra: You don’t think they actually… behind the net… do you? I feel like that would be uncomfortable. And cold.

Chouinard: [grins] Let’s find out.

[Dykstra, who is dyslexic, puts in an earbud as Chouinard opens the book. He follows along over Chouinard’s shoulder. After a little while, Chouinard’s mouth drops open.]

Chouinard: [laughs] Damn! This is kinda hot, actually! What the fuck, man? No wonder we’re so fucking popular.

[Dykstra’s eyes bulge.]

Dykstra: Wait, this is what my wife is always reading?! I thought it was, like… cute stuff. Romantic. Not fucking porn!

Chouinard: It’s called porn with a plot, dude, have some fucking class.

Dykstra: She reads this shit in public, man! Like on the bus and stuff!

Chouinard: I once saw the lady in a store who lets you into the dressing rooms read one of these books at the desk, bro, I think that’s worse.

Dykstra: How did you know what it was?

Chouinard: My wife reads them.

Dykstra: Yours too?

Chouinard: I think all the WAGs do. We’re on roadies half the fucking year, what do you think they do, sit around and wait for us to come home?

[Dykstra looks away and mumbles something unintelligible.]

- - - CUT - - -

[Rozanov leans into Hollander with a mischievous grin, one arm over Hollander’s shoulders and the other pulling him close at the waist. Hollander sighs, looking resigned.]

Hollander: This is Offside by Avery Keelan.

Rozanov: Cheer up, Hollander. Is a hockey book, you like hockey books.

Hollander: Not… these kinds of hockey books.

Rozanov: No, is better. Is sexy hockey book. You like hockey books, you like sex, you will like sexy hockey books, yes?

Hollander: [blushing faintly] Let’s just get this over with.

[Hollander and Rozanov begin reading, Hollander mouthing the words. He turns steadily more red.]

Hollander: How far do I have to go?

Rozanov: What, you do not like?

Harris [off camera]: You can stop wherever you want, Shane.

Hollander: Thank god.

Rozanov: You didn’t answer. You like too much? Is that the problem? The sexy hockey book is turning you straight? Somebody kidnap Rose Landry before he needs to confirm his sexuality again!

Hollander: For the last time, Rozanov, I’m gay.

Rozanov: Hmm. You are sure?

Hollander: Asks the man who laughed at me when I came out.

Rozanov: I think we will test to be safe.

[Rozanov says something in Russian. Hollander blushes furiously. Off camera, several of their teammates groan.]

- - - CUT - - -

[Dillon and Boyle huddle over a book. Boyle appears confused.]

Boyle: Why do these all have like, cutesy cartoon covers? They look like they’re for children.

Dillon: You’re a child.

- - - CUT - - -

[A book is thrown from off camera. Boyle catches, then promptly drops it. Dillon picks it up.]

Boyle: Ahh! What is this?

Harris [off camera]: You’re the one who complained about cartoon covers.

[Dillon holds the book for the camera to see. The black-and-white cover shows a shirtless man with his hand behind his head, showing off his tattoo sleeve. Next to him is his hockey stick.]

Dillon: This book is… The Pucking Wrong Number by C. R. Jane.

[Dillon flips the book open to the marked page, and they begin reading. Boyle’s jaw goes slack, and Dillon’s eyes widen.]

Boyle: What… the actual fuck… is this? Harris…?

Dillon: [shaking his head] This is just wrong, man.

Harris [off camera]: You’re the one who complained about the cartoon covers.

Boyle: Where did you even find this?

Dillon: And why would anyone read it? Or write it?

Gen [off camera]: I delved into depths of TikTok I never want to think about again.

Dillon: Should’ve kept the lady in the tutu…

[To the side, the cover of Icebreaker by Hannah Grace appears.]

- - - CUT - - -

[Holmberg, LaPointe, and Young joke and chirp, shoving each other. Haas stands close but out of the action, the only one looking into the camera.]

Haas: Guys.

[None of the three appear to hear him.]

Haas: Guys.

[Again, none of them react. They continue to rough house.]

Rozanov [off camera]: Rookies!

[They freeze and fall silent.]

Rozanov [off camera]: Listen to my son. And be nice to Harris.

[All four nod and sit on the ground. Two copies of the same book are tossed from either side of the camera. Haas, on the far left, catches one, and Holmberg, on the far right, catches the other.]

Haas: Face Off by Chelsea Curto.

Holmberg: Hey, that was my line, Haasy!

[Haas rolls his eyes, then opens the book and holds it to the side so LaPointe can read it as well. Holmberg scowls, then opens his. Young cranes his neck to see the pages.]

Haas: This isn’t as bad as I thought it’d be.

Holmberg: She’s an NHL player too! That’s cool.

LaPointe: [tilts his head] I can’t figure out the position they’re supposed to be in.

[Holmberg starts using his hands to attempt to show him.]

Holmberg: So she’s like this, and he’s here, and then they move like that. And then I think her leg goes here? I’m not sure.

LaPointe: Okay, I get it… maybe.

Young: [grinning] I don’t know, I think I like your girlfriend’s book better, Motorboat. It was clearer. Had steps to follow.

[LaPointe shoves Young, who ends up in Holmberg’s lap. Holmberg’s eyes fly open wide, and Young quickly elbows his way back up.]

Young: I think Bergy liked that book…

- - - CUT - - -

[Rozanov, Hollander, and Hayes stand together, each holding two books.]

Rozanov: We hope you had as much fun as we did.

Hayes: The titles and authors of all the books are in the video’s description below.

Hollander: To read these books yourselves, please visit your local library or their website to rent the physical copies, ebooks, or audiobooks.

- - - CUT - - -

[Rozanov reclines in a chair facing the rest of the team, who sit in rows on the ground in front of him. He reads aloud from a copy of Him by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy. His voice is muted, lively music playing instead. Hollander, closest to the camera in the front row, hides his face in his hands, but a blush can be seen on his neck. The other players wear expressions of fear, embarrassment, exasperation, or -- in Dykstra’s case -- curiosity. Holmberg hesitantly raises his hand.]

Holmberg: Is this what you and Hollzy do?

[The rest of the players look at Holmberg in terror, with the exception of Hollander, who slumps even further.]

Rozanov: No. We are not so vanilla.

Chapter End Notes

Thanks for reading! I just started a new job, and I'm not sure how much time I'll have to write, but I'm having a lot of fun and I'm really excited for the next chapter, so hopefully it'll be out soon.

Also, the part about the dressing room lady was inspired by real life.

Chapter 3: The Response

Chapter Summary

The internet reacts to the Centaurs' video of the team reading hockey romance.

Chapter Notes

SIKE I thought this part would take longer but I was so obsessed and had so many great ideas that I wrote it in the same day as the last chapter. Honestly the hardest part by far was coming up with all the names. And the formatting, that took forever. Disclaimer, I do not use Twitter, which is kind of where I imagined this taking place. I just went for it anyway.

Have fun guys, I certainly did!

See the end of the chapter for more notes
