Endometriosis Awareness Month
Summary
When the Ottawa Centaurs' social media representative Frieda Kampell accidentally reposts information on endometriosis from the official team account, she could never guess that they would end up here: The Centaurs are facing a period cramp simulator for a video!
Notes
Hello!
This is something so, so silly but after I saw a post about the Centaurs and a period cramp simulator, I just had to write this. Also, I’m taking any chance I get to talk about endometriosis.
Enjoy!
Endometriosis Awareness Month
Endometriosis Foundation @EndoFound
Happy March and an angry Endometriosis Awareness Month!
Approximately 1 in 9 women are affected by endometriosis, yet it still takes 10 years on average before getting an official diagnosis. We call this: Medical Misogyny.

katie @censelessss
my cat threw up on the carpet AGAIN >:(
olive :) @olivolivoliv
lmao the ottawa centaurs coming through with the endometriosis awareness retweet
olive :) @olivolivoliv
@olivolivoliv wait they undid it, lmao social media intern getting a stern talking to
damian @censhockey
and thus begins the Big Googling of what endometriosis is in the ice hockey world…
friedchen ■ @privfrieda
ah shit
Centaurs Players (all)
Zane Boodram (A)
man did you see what Frieda accidentally retweeted on twitter today?
and did anyone else’s wife roll their eyes when you asked what endometriosis was and then leave the room muttering “men”?
this is why i married a man
Zane Boodram (A)
so you know what endometriosis is, cap?
no.
Troy Barrett
is Frieda in trouble?
is it like some secret sect she’s part of?
harris didn’t say anything about her getting fired
it can’t be that bad, right?
Wyatt Hayes
endometriosis is a PHYSICAL ILLNESS troy
our social media person is not in a sect, wtf
Troy Barrett
oh
Zane Boodram (A)
man it’s brutal
i googled it
they say it hurts more than giving birth??
how can it hurt more than giving birth??
Luca Haasy
oh so it’s like headaches? they usually have the worst pain, right?
so Frieda is in trouble for posting about a medical condition?
seems unfair
Wyatt Hayes
no luca it’s like period cramps, not headaches
only more painful than normal period cramps
Evan Dykstra
what are normal period cramps like?
Wyatt Hayes
less painful
and endometriosis cramps can also occur outside of periods
i think
Shane <3
can we do something for Frieda?
she shouldn’t be fired for something like this
Luca Haasy
wdym outside of periods?
how can you get period cramps outside of periods?
Zane Boodram (A)
how do you know all of this wyatt?
doctor wife, hello!
Troy Barrett
guys no one’s in trouble
Frieda is not getting fired
confirmed by harris
who is appalled at how little we know about “menstrual health”
i think i still don’t know what endometriosis is
Wyatt Hayes
i am also appalled that none of you seem to know about period cramps
this team needs an intervention
friedchen ■ @privfrieda
going into work today and finding out we’re gonna host a menstrual health education workshop for the boys, lmao you couldn’t make this up
friedchen ■ @privfrieda
just found out that the boys themselves requested the workshop, it keeps getting weirder and weirder
friedchen ■ @privfrieda
LMAO so apparently the boys got to talking because i accidentally retweeted that endo post from the team’s account and then it turned out that no one knew anything about periods and then someone decided they needed an intervention
friedchen ■ @privfrieda
i can’t believe my medical suffering led to an entire ice hockey team sitting in a room and listening to a presentation on the menstrual cycle, this is the best day of my life
friedchen ■ @privfrieda
also the worst day of my life, because how come none of these jocks have heard the term luteal phase before today
The Ottawa Centaurs VS the Period Cramp Simulator! | Endometriosis Awareness
[In frame: Ilya Rozanov and Zane Boodram, standing in the media room at the Canadian Tire Centre]
Ilya: Hi! We are the Ottawa Centaurs, also known as the best team in ice hockey, and we are here to talk about endometriosis.
Zane: And also receive period cramps!
Ilya: [flashes a big grin at the camera]
— Cut —
[In frame: Wyatt and Lisa Hayes, Frieda Kampell]
Wyatt: This is our lovely social media representative, Frieda. Frieda was diagnosed with endometriosis two years ago, and to make sure we all had a reference on how bad this specific cramp simulator can get, she volunteered to test it out first.
[Frieda waves to the camera, Lisa helps attach the electrodes to her abdomen]
Wyatt: Also, this is my wife Lisa. She has no reason to be here other than to watch these men, and I quote, “whimper and cry”.
[Lisa shoots a big grin to the camera]
Lisa: Okay, I am going to turn on the simulator now. If you want to stop at any point, please say so. Are you ready?
Frieda: I’m a little nervous, but let’s go. It can’t be worse than my three hospitalisations, right?
Evan Dykstra [off camera]: Wait, you were in hospital because of this shit?
Luca Haas [off camera]: Three times?
Harris Drover [off camera]: I thought you knew that it was worse than giving birth. Why would worse than giving birth not require medical attention?
Frieda: I’m ready. Thank you, Lisa.
[Lisa notches the levels on the simulator up, starting by 1. There’s an indicator on screen telling the viewer which level is currently used]
Lisa: Okay, we’ve reached level 5. Feelings so far?
Frieda: This would be a light day, maybe. It’s not nothing, but I could go to work like this just fine.
[Levels increase step by step until 10, the maximum level]
Frieda: Level 10 I’d say is how the start of something really bad feels like. The simulator can’t go more than this, but if I had this level of pain, I knew I would have to lie down immediately, take pain medication, have something warm on my stomach, everything. But then it would definitely get way worse than this before the meds could do their job.
Lisa: Alright, thank you Frieda. I was gentle with you because you deserve it, but now I’m looking forward to torturing these boys. Let’s start!
— Cut —
[In frame: Zane, getting the simulator attached to his abdomen. He is holding a yellow card in his hands]
Frieda [off camera]: Okay, Lisa is going to put the simulator on and you just have to read what it says on the card.
Zane: Alright. Endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 9 women globallyyy- Motherfucking shit!
[Zane bends over, biting down on his closed fist. He temporarily disappears out of frame when he bends too low. The level indicator reads 3]
Zane: This shit hurts, man.
Lisa: It’s on level 3.
Zane: Only 3? You’re not going to turn it up higher, are you?
Lisa: Read your card, Boodram.
Zane: Endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 9 women globally. Despite the high affection rate, it takes on average ten years to get a diagnosisss … Stop, stop, stop. Shit, fuck.
[Zane disappears out of frame as he kneels on the ground, the camera swings down to film him on the floor. Level indicator: 6]
— Cut —
[In frame: Troy Barrett, holding another yellow card in his hands, and helping Lisa attach the simulator electrodes to his abdomen. His t-shirt is bunched up under his chin.]
Holmberg [off camera]: Flex those muscles, flex, flex, flex!
Lisa: Alright, start whenever.
Troy: Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which cells that are similar to the uterus lining are found outside the womb- Holy shit! What the fuck?
[Troy moves away from his spot, turning sideways and bracing himself against the wall behind him. Level indicator: 4]
Troy [wheezing]: These endometriosis herds — fuck — are most often found in the pelvic area, such as on the peritoneum, ovaries, bowel, or bladder. Motherfucking shit.
[Slowly, Troy starts to slide down the wall. Level indicator: 7]
Troy: There have been some cases in which endometriosis herds have also been- fucking shit, I can’t do this. This is horrible. Someone take this off me and kick me in the nuts instead.
LaPointe [off camera]: I volunteer as a tribute!
Ilya [off camera]: Read your yellow card, Troy.
Troy [wheezing]: In some cases, endometriosis herds have also been found in other areas of the body, for example the chest. Turn it off, Lisa. Turn it off, turn it off, ah fucking shit.
— Cut —
[In frame: Holmberg, already attached to the simulator, lying in a foetal position on the floor and reading his card. Level indicator: 8]
Holmberg: Symptoms can vary from person to person. Symptoms and level of pain are not related to location or severity of endometriosis herds. Some people may also have endometriosis herds, but little to no symptoms. For others, symptoms can be debilitating.
— Cut —
[In frame: LaPointe, bend over to read his card. Level indicator: 6]
LaPointe: Symptoms often include very painful periods- Shit. [breathing deep] Painful periods that interfere with every day life. Endometriosis can also cause heavy and more-than-average menstrual bleeding. Fuck.
— Cut —
[In frame: Young, on all fours on the floor. Level indicator: 7]
Lisa: You can do it!
Young: Patients with endometriosis may also suffer from general fatigue, pain during or after sex, painful bowel movements, or pain when urinating. People with endometriosis may also be facing difficulties with fertility, although it is estimated that up to seventy percent are able to conceive naturally.
Lisa: Great job!
Young: I wish that I had never been conceived.
— Cut —
[In frame: Ilya, getting attached and grinning broadly]
Ilya: I’m ready.
Zane [off camera]: Don’t be so cocky! You’ll see.
Ilya: Women go through this every month, Boodram. I can take it for the duration of reading one yellow card, no?
Lisa [with a big grin]: I’m ready.
Ilya: A related condition with similar symptoms is called adenomyosis- blyat!
[Cut to a black screen with the following text: We have been advised to leave out the string of Russian profanities for the sake of everyone involved. Level indicator: 9]
[In frame: Ilya, still standing up but clearly struggling. A few tears are rolling down his cheeks, his eyes are red. Level indicator: 4]
Ilya: With adenomyosis, tissue that is similar to the uterus lining grows within the muscle of the womb wall. The condition affects approximately ten percent of those with a uterus.
Frieda [off-camera]: Well done!
Ilya: Do not speak to me right now. I am very sorry you are going through this, but please do not speak.
— Cut —
[In frame: Luca, getting attached to the simulator and looking slightly nervous]
Frieda [off-camera]: Ready when you are!
Luca: Getting an endometriosis diagnosis in most countries is not possible without needing to undergo surgery- Ah, fuck my life!
[Luca starts walking up and down, bending over occasionally, his upper body starts to shake. Level indicator: 4]
Luca: It is done by a minimally invasive laparoscopy- Fuck, wie soll man denn jetzt auch noch Englisch reden, junge.
[Luca falls to the floor. Level indicator: 8]
Ilya [off-camera]: Go easy on the child!
Luca: In that surgery, a camera is used to detect endometriosis herds and remove them. Other, non-invasive diagnostic tools are under-researched and often not funded by insurance policies. Please make it stop now.
Ilya [off-camera]: I’ll take it off now, Luca. Don’t worry.
— Cut —
[In frame: Dykstra, bend over and leaning against the wall. Level indicator: 6]
Dykstra: The road to a diagnosis is also made hard on women because menstruation and pain is stigmatised and taboo. Many women are told that their pain is normal, by peers and by doctors, and are very often not taken seriously enough to start further testing.
Lisa: That wasn’t so bad, was it?
Dykstra: I’m going to vomit.
— Cut —
[In frame: Shane is getting attached to the simulator, holding his yellow card and he has a serious expression on his face]
Ilya [off-camera]: Moya lyubov, you don’t have to do this. You can still say no.
Bood [off-camera]: Shut your fucking mouth, Roz. We’re all doing it, including Holly.
Ilya [off-camera]: Ignore them, Shane. I am captain, I can say you do not have to do this.
Shane: I’ll be fine.
Troy [off-camera]: Listen to your hubby, Roz. He’ll be fine.
Lisa: Ready when you are.
Shane: Endometriosis herds can often not be seen via ultrasound imaging, which is why other diagnostic tools are necessary. The reason why there are no alternatives yet is because endometriosis research and testing has been significantly underfunded for decades. To this day, serious research is often not funded enough to bring about real change.
[A moment of silence as Shane finishes reading his card without showing any symptoms of pain. Level indicator: 5]
Lisa: Uh…
[Level indicator changes from 5 to 6, to 7, to 8, to 9, and finally to 10. Shane scrunches his face.]
Shane: Oh yeah, I guess that hurts. Does it always come in these waves, Frieda?
[Another moment of silence]
Zane [off-camera, loudly]: Fraudulence!
— Cut —
[In frame: Wyatt, attached to the simulator and ready to read his card]
Wyatt: As of right now, endometriosis is not curable and can only be treated for symptoms, including pain management and pain therapy.
[Level indicator: 2]
Dykstra [off-camera]: More fraudulence! Just because he’s your husband doesn’t mean you can’t give him something above a five!
Lisa: Stop being impatient!
Wyatt: Most endometriosis patients are prescribed a variety of contraceptive pills which can slow down the growth of new endometriosis herds. These pills, however, often come with a range of side effects- Shit, fucking hell.
[Wyatt bends over, breathing loudly. Level indicator: 9]
Wyatt: Make it stop.
Lisa: Finish your card first.
Wyatt: Better funding, fucking hell, is needed for more effective medication with less side effects. See, done, I’m done. Turn it off!
— Cut —
[In frame: Ilya, Shane, and Bood]
Ilya: This has been the Ottawa Centaurs versus Period Cramp Simulator. If you liked this video, please hit the subscribe button and-
[Shane hits him in the chest]
Shane: Stop that.
[Ilya grins broadly]
Shane: For more information, please follow the links in the description box. Do not hesitate to contact your doctor if you think you are experiencing endometriosis or adenomyosis symptoms, and do not let yourself be discouraged in your fight for a diagnosis. We will also link resources for support groups and mental health.
Bood: I would also like to formally apologise to my wife for not knowing what endometriosis was a week ago. I have been educated.
