Kissing Centaurs

by UglyGreenJacket

Summary

[Two basic-looking men in suits sit at a desk inside the Canadian Tire Centre. Hockey players swirl around the ice behind them for warm-ups.]

Johnny: Hello, everyone, and welcome to the 2021 season opener for the Ottawa Centaurs! I’m Jonny Bernard here with Martin Thomas, and we’re so glad it’s hockey season again.

Mark: Indeed, we are Johnny. Especially when it comes to this team.

Johnny: Absolutely. So many have been waiting for the so-called Gayest Team in Hockey to take to the ice for the first time.

Mark: A mantle they proudly wear, and for good reason. When you have Shane Hollander, Ilya Rozanov, and Troy Barrett on your team, being queer might just be a superpower.

Johnny: Do you think we’ll see a Hollander/Rozanov appearance on the Kiss Cam tonight?

Mark: I think it might be one of the greatest disappointments in all of hockey if we don’t.

Notes

This is based on a Threads post by moore_tutus and karina.s.larsen that I was tagged in to write, so thank you to those lovely people for allowing me to borrow their idea ❤️

If you're a hockey purist, this may annoy you. I had to take some liberties with some small things to make this work. But it's fun. I swear.

Kissing Centaurs

Johnny: Couldn’t agree with you more on that one. And let’s not forget the rest of the team that’s stood behind them as clearly proud allies. Plus, their director of communications, Harris Drover. That guy is an adorable genius. Did you see the Instagram post about tonight’s game starring Shane Hollander and Shane Hollander’s husband?

Mark: I did, Johnny. And I think it perfectly shows the playful dynamic of this team.

Johnny: They definitely bring a lot to the table for this season. This is truly a historic moment not only for the Centaurs but for the NHL as a whole. Hollander and Rozanov, longtime rivals turned extremely enthusiastic husbands, are playing on the same team together. I’m excited to witness it.

Mark: Some critics say it’s nothing more than a publicity stunt, but you can’t discount the incredible careers both of these men have had so far. Saying that cheapens everything they’ve brought to the sport and accomplished, and I find it hard to believe either one of them would risk that for a stunt.

Johnny: Couldn’t agree more, Mark. Let’s see what Shane Hollander and his husband can manage to do tonight against Buffalo.

______

1st Period: 12 minutes 38 seconds remaining

Mark: That’s a tough break for Byram, but an incredible save by Hayes.

Johnny: I’ve said it for years, but Hayes is truly one of the best goalies in the league. I’m glad to see him finally get his due.

[Love Shack by the B-52s begins to play throughout the arena. And couples begin to appear on the jumbotron.]

Mark: Oh, it’s your favorite time of the night, Johnny.

Johnny: It really is, Mark. I love love, what can I say?

[The kiss cam switches from the crowd to the Ottawa bench, where Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are sitting next to each other, having what looks to be a tense conversation. When the crowd sees them, loud cheers can be heard, and the two men finally notice their faces on the big screen. Ilya smiles widely and turns toward Shane, beginning to lean in, only to be met with Shane’s hand pushing his face away with a flustered expression. The camera stays on them, while Shane continues to shake his head as the crowd grows louder with encouragement.]

Mark: (laughing) Well, I can’t say I’m all that surprised about this turn of events. If there’s one thing Shane Hollander doesn’t mess around with, it’s his focus during a hockey game.

Johnny: You’ve got to feel for Rozanov, though. Did you see their wedding photos? That man is down bad for his husband.

Mark: Yes, I did. And did I also find myself on a Reddit post dissecting their suit choices and whether or not it’s impolite to not provide your guests with seating options? Also, yes.

Johnny: Well, that was certainly a choice, Mark.

Mark: Yes, it was. Oh, what is this?

[Zane Boodram, sitting on the other side of Shane on the bench, leans over Shane and taps Ilya on the shoulder with a wide grin, wiggling his eyebrows. Ilya nods, and Zane plants a kiss directly onto Ilya’s lips as the crowd erupts. When they break apart, Shane stares wide-eyed at Zane for a moment before his expression turns murderous.]

Mark: I don’t think Hollander appreciated that one!

Johnny: You gotta wonder what that conversation is going to be like at home later.

Mark: Based on the look on his face, someone might pay the price for it way before he gets home.

______

1st period: 10 minutes and 15 seconds remaining

Johnny: Oh! That was a rough hit on Hollander. He can’t be happy about that one.

Mark: If it were any other player, I’d say we’re about to witness a fight, but. Oh. Wait. No. I spoke too soon.

[Shane turns toward the Buffalo player who pushed him into the boards. He quickly drops his gloves and wastes no time in throwing a punch to the other player’s jaw. The winger from Buffalo removes his own gloves, throws off Shane’s helmet, and punches him in the eye.]

Johnny: Well, Mark, I’m not sure which is rarer: the number of queer players who wound up on this team or Shane Hollander willingly picking a fight.

Mark: I really think it could go either way, Johnny. I’m surprised Rozanov hasn’t stepped in, but he’s still on the bench looking like a cat that got the cream.

Johnny: Do you think we’re seeing a brand new Shane Hollander here tonight?

Mark: Well, there’s something different about him, but I’m not sure what’s causing it.

______

2nd Period: 4 minutes and 18 seconds remaining

[Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer plays in the arena as another round of couples is shown on the Kiss Cam. Shane and Ilya are once again seated next to each other on the Centaurs’ bench as the camera lands on them. Ilya grins, and Shane’s mouth immediately sets in a frustrated line as he gets up and gestures for Luca Haas to change places with him. The grin on Ilya’s face only grows as Shane moves away from him, and Troy Barrett, on Ilya’s other side, leans in to place a kiss on his cheek. Ilya then looks expectantly at Luca, who’s pale skin flushes even more pink before he also leans in and places a kiss of his own on Ilya’s other cheek.]

Mark: Johnny, do you think this could be the first gay hockey marriage ruined by a Kiss Cam?

Johnny: I’m not even going to pretend to understand the dynamics that are at play here, and as a straight man, I feel it’s best I don’t speculate.

Mark: I certainly hope they’re in it for the long game. I just put in an order on Etsy for a Hollanov t-shirt.

Johnny: I am not surprised at all by that. But Rozanov seems happy. Gleeful even, so hopefully Hollander can shake himself out of this.

Mark: Despite whatever’s going on for him personally, he’s playing okay. It’s always a struggle to adjust to a new team, even when you’re legally bound to the captain.

Johnny: I wasn’t even talking about his hockey, Mark. He could have the worst game of his life and still outplay most other players. I just really want those two to be okay.

Mark: You do love love.

Johnny: I really do.

______

2nd period: 3 minutes and 48 seconds remaining

[Buffalo celebrates as they score their second goal of the night while a frustrated Shane angrily slams his stick. Buffalo’s center knocks into Shane’s shoulder as he skates by causing Shane to immediately shove back, hard, nearly knocking the Buffalo player to the ice. They come to blows, resulting in Shane getting punched in the mouth and being held back by four of his teammates.]

Mark: And Shane Hollander is involved in another fight, his second of the night, Johnny, both of which he’s instigated.

Johnny: I can’t say I blame him for this one. Krebs baited him into that.

Mark: Can you remember the last time Hollander fought? Let alone more than once?

Johnny: When I said tonight would be historic, this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.

Mark: That’s another trip to the Terrarium of Iniquity for Hollander. His third of the night. That has to be some kind of record for him.

Johnny: You have to wonder what the locker room conversation will look like during intermission.

Mark: Wiebe is still a young coach but he knows what he’s doing.

Johnny: I’m more wondering what his captain might say to him.

Mark: Rozanov looks rather proud over there, so I’m not sure much accountability will come from that direction.

Johnny: The rest of the team looks pretty amused, too. If nothing else, I think we’ll have a rather entertaining season with these guys.

Mark: Wouldn’t expect anything less from the Gayest Team in Hockey. And I say that with the utmost respect.

______

Intermission 2 minutes and 19 seconds remaining

Mark: Welcome back everyone. We’re just about to get started with the third period, and Ottawa is down two to one. Johnny, do you think Ottawa has a chance of coming back to win?

Johnny: I would never count them out. They’ve had some brilliant moments in the game so far, and Buffalo has gotten lucky, really, with their two goals. If they can band together to clear paths for Hollander and Rozanov to get to the net, they can definitely put themselves in a position to score.

Mark: I hope Hollander can pull something off. He looks like he could use the win. Makes you wonder if he’ll have any regrets about coming to Ottawa after this game.

Johnny: I don’t even think getting a divorce would make him regret leaving Montreal.

Mark: Are you seeing this, Johnny? Looks like the Centaurs are coming back onto the ice and forming some kind of line. Do you have any idea what this is?

Johnny: I am as clueless about this as Roger Crowell is to living in the twenty-first century.

Mark: Ouch. It’s a good thing he can’t fine you, because that one will sting like a stick to the back of the knee.

[The entire Centaurs team is standing in a line near their bench, with the exception of Shane, who is looking around, confused. Ilya is at the front of the line and looks up toward the sound technician’s booth and waves. Almost immediately, Diamonds by Rihanna fills the arena, and one by one, each member of the Centaurs begins to skate by Ilya, grabbing his face and kissing him, most in very dramatic fashion, as the entire thing plays out on the giant screens overhead.]

Johnny: Oh, well, that’s certainly not something you see in hockey.

Mark: I think there’s only a very few specific places in the world where you’d see that, Johnny.

Johnny: Well, I’m not mad about it.

Mark: From the sound of the crowd, I don’t think anyone is mad except Shane Hollander.

[Shane continues to watch, frozen in place as twenty-one men kiss his husband. He appears to be struggling to catch his breath, his face moving between confusion, horror, and anger. Wyatt Hayes is last in line and grabs Ilya, dipping him low, barely managing around his bulky gear. When he sets Ilya back right, Ilya turns toward Shane with a shit-eating grin as the rest of the team behind him cheers and claps him on. Shane throws off his gloves and helmet and skates towards his husband with purpose, his shoulder-length hair flying behind him.]

Mark: What is Hollander doing? Do you think he’s about to go punch him? There’s definitely nothing in the official rule book about hitting your husband, who’s also your team captain.

Johnny: If that is what he’s doing, I cannot stress enough how historic this night is.

Mark: Oh, wow–

[Shane reaches Ilya and grabs his smirking face, bringing it down toward his own, their lips meeting in an explosive kiss that has the arena erupting in a roar.]

Johnny: I feel like I’ve said this a lot over the past couple of years, but you do not see this every day in hockey.

Mark: Did I just see tongue?

Johnny: Scott Hunter should take notes.

Mark: Do you think they do this in the locker room?

Johnny: I don’t know, but whenever that documentary about their careers comes out in fifteen years, I’ll be very much looking forward to all the insider info.

[When Shane and Ilya finally break apart, their faces are split with smiles, and Shane very clearly mouths, ‘you asshole’. Ilya laughs and touches their foreheads together, his gloved hand coming up to grasp the back of Shane’s neck as the buzzer sounds. They finally break apart, their teammates clapping them on the back as Shane appears more relaxed than he has all evening while Ilya skates to the bench and Shane skates to center ice for the faceoff.]

Johnny: Now let’s see what Hollander manages to do with this energy.

Mark: I mean, I’m a changed man just seeing it so, I have no doubt we’ll be seeing an all new Shane Hollander after that.

______

[Shane Hollander stands in front of reporters outside the Centaurs’ locker room. A bruise begins to show on his left eye, his bottom lip is split open, and his hair is slicked back from his shower.]

Reporter: Shane, do you have any thoughts on what happened tonight?

Shane: Everyone was solid tonight, and I’m proud to be a part of this team. I feel really good about the two goals I scored in the 3rd, we got the win, and I’m really looking forward to what lies ahead for this season. I think it’s going to be a great year.

Reporter: But can you say anything specifically about the time you spent in the penalty box and the fact that your husband had to kiss the entire team before you would agree to kiss him?

[Shane’s expression turns from neutral to dark as realization dawns on his face about the question. There’s a beat of silence as cameras flash and wait for his response.]

Shane: No comment.

[An image of Shane Hollander, helmet and gloves removed, at Ottawa’s season opener, kissing Ilya Rozanov passionately on the ice while their teammates grin and cheer around them.]

@ilyarozanov81 In light of recent events, my husband, @realshanehollander, and I will no longer be participating in any Kiss Cam moments. I understand your profound disappointment and ask that you please respect our privacy during this time.
