February Roadie
Summary
Ilya Rozanov had no idea it was possible to be so unbearably happy in February. It was objectively the worst month of the year between the terrible weather and the exhaustion of the mid-season grind, but as he sat next to his husband on a plane to Columbus in the middle of their two week roadie, he felt almost giddy. They were cuddled together watching the latest Fast and the Furious movie (they were somehow going to space, but also the ocean floor? He had been too busy staring at his husband’s freckles framing his glasses to focus, sue him).
OR
Shane bonds with the team in his first season with the Centaurs, and Ilya has FeelingsTM about it.
Notes
This is set after TLG during Shane's first season with the Centaurs. I decided to take some creative liberties with Shane's dating history, so this doesn't fully line up with canon. All celebrities mentioned are just for fun, I know nothing about their actual romantic histories
February Roadie
Ilya Rozanov had no idea it was possible to be so unbearably happy in February. It was objectively the worst month of the year between the terrible weather and the exhaustion of the mid-season grind, but as he sat next to his husband on a plane to Columbus in the middle of their two week roadie, he felt almost giddy. They were cuddled together watching the latest Fast and the Furious movie (they were somehow going to space, but also the ocean floor? He had been too busy staring at his husband’s freckles framing his glasses to focus, sue him). Ilya’s hands were gently raking through Shane’s hair as they basked in the quiet moment together. When Shane signed with Ottawa this summer, Ilya was secretly worried that so much time together would be overwhelming after a decade of stolen moments, that he would be too much, too loud, too moody. That light shining on their relationship for the first time would be too bright, too intense. But five months into their new routine, his fears were unfounded. Their marriage was only getting stronger with so much quality time together, and their team had become the best support system they could ever ask for. Sure there were hard days, but the positives of finally getting to just be together without fear made up for them tenfold.
Ilya was jostled from his sentimental reflection when Holmberg came running up to the front of the plane, seemingly on a mission. Shane and Ilya were in their normal row, with Barrett and Dykstra to their left and Hayes and Bood right behind them. As he stood in front of them, Holmberg announced, “Married guys, I need your help!”
“What’s up Bergy?” Barrett asked, pulling off his headphones. The rest of the guys looked at the young kid, curious enough to hide their annoyance at being interrupted.
“So I’ve been DM’ing with this girl, right? She’s amazing, so hot and funny, way more famous than me. She’s coming to our game next week in LA and then I’m taking her out to dinner after. How do I find a classy place to go?” Holmberg asked, talking so quickly he was barely breathing.
“You have never been to restaurant before? Only fast food?” Ilya chirped.
“Kid, there’s this amazing invention, you might not have heard of it. It’s called Google,” Dykstra added.
“Fuck off! How do I figure out if the places that show up on Google are, like, right? I want the vibe to be romantic as shit, and I don’t want her to spend all night getting recognized,” Holmberg replied.
“What do you think, Hollander? You are the one who has dated famous movie star,” Ilya needled his husband, earning a dramatic eye roll.
“I do know of one place in LA that’s very discreet, a French restaurant only like fifteen minutes from the arena. I went in 2014 though, I’ll see if I can find the name,” Shane offered, pulling out his phone and opening up his calendar app with the intense focus usually reserved for reviewing game tape.
“What were you doing in discreet LA restaurant in 2014? You did not meet Rose Landry until 2016?” Ilya asked, surprised by the admission.
“It wasn’t with Rose,” Shane offered with a shrug, not looking up from his phone, seemingly oblivious to everyone’s undivided attention now trained onto him.
“You’ve dated another celebrity?” Hayes asked the question the entire group was thinking.
“We weren’t dating! I just hooked up with him like twice. It wasn’t a big deal,” Shane replied, causing an uproar amongst the rest of the guys. Ilya tried to ignore the rush of jealousy that flooded his stomach as he looked at his husband in awe. There was very little they didn’t know about each other at this point, so when Ilya got another fact, another piece to the puzzle of Shane, he couldn’t help but be thrilled.
“Is he more or less famous than Landry?” Bood asked excitedly.
“Um…the same level maybe? I don’t really follow music, so I’m not sure,” Shane said.
“Oh my God, who was it?” Holmberg practically yelled. The entire team was paying attention to this conversation now, the group in the back pausing their game of Mario Kart to listen in.
“It really doesn’t matter,” Shane tried to deflect, but there was no real bite in it. If there was, Ilya would have stepped in to change the subject no matter how curious he also was.
“It really, really does,” Bood disagreed.
“Please Hollzy!” Holmberg begged.
“I’ll get Harris to let you out of making TikTok’s for the rest of the season,” Barrett offered. Shane’s ears perked up at that - if there was anything the man hated more than breaking routines or disorganization, it was participating in silly social media trends.
“Fine. I’ll tell you,” he relented, unable to hide his smirk. It didn’t happen off the ice very often, but when Shane Hollander got that cocky look on his face, Ilya went absolutely feral. Between this and the raging jealousy, it was taking every ounce of self control Ilya had to not drag his husband to the plane bathroom and ravish him.
The team was vibrating with excitement as Shane said, “It was Harry Styles.”
“WHAT?????” Holmberg screamed.
“NO FUCKING WAY!” LaPointe yelled.
“GETTT INNNN HOLLZY!” Young shouted.
“You fucked one of the biggest pop-stars on the planet?” Bood asked incredulously.
“I don’t think he was as famous at the time,” Shane said nonchalantly.
“He absolutely was in 2014. This is the craziest lore drop on the planet,” Hayes pointed out, shaking his head.
“What was he like?” Haas asked in awe, looking at Shane more starstruck than ever before, which Ilya didn’t think was even possible.
“He was charming but also took himself really seriously. I barely got to know him though, we didn’t really spend that much time together,” Shane admitted, his ears turning pink.
“How did you even meet?” Barrett asked, clearly thrilled at the thought of relaying this gossip to his boyfriend later. Ilya could only imagine the number of questions Harris would be asking.
“We were both on set filming for Rolex on the same day. He asked me out to dinner afterwards,” Shane explained.
“Damn, I need to start doing endorsements,” LaPointe muttered.
“Why did you stop seeing him?” Holmberg asked.
“Surely the sex wasn’t bad?” Young added, and Shane blushed deeply. Ilya was finding it stupidly endearing watching his husband under this kind of attention, even if the reason did make him want to latch onto Shane like a koala and never let go.
“No, the sex was really good. His schedule was just crazier than mine. And there was the very annoying fact that he wasn’t Ilya. I was trying to move on from him at the time since we hadn’t talked in like six months, but no one could ever compare to him. Even a pop star,” Shane admitted, his whole body flushing at this point. Ilya felt the jealousy dissipate completely from his body at that, beaming with love and a little bit of added pride.
“Awwwww,” Hayes cooed.
“Is true. No one can beat Russians at fucking,” Ilya teased, his voice booming.
“I can’t believe Hollzy bagged two of the most famous people on the planet,” Young said, shaking his head.
“Yeah I always thought Roz was the one with the most game, but clearly not,” Choinard added.
“Hey! Is not true. Did we all forget my era of dating gorgeous models? Was very public, very sexy,” Ilya defended himself.
“Whatever you have to tell yourself man,” Dykstra retorted.
“Your era of dating models? Who are you, Taylor Swift?” Shane joked.
“Oh so now he knows pop culture references,” Ilya fired back.
“Speaking of, has anyone else dated someone ridiculously famous?” Hayes asked, breaking up the bickering before it could really get going.
“Adrian de la Cruz,” Barrett admitted, and the whole team stilled, clearly not expecting someone to actually have an answer.
“WHAT? Crimson Blade?” Hayes asked in disbelief.
“Yeah, long distance for two years. It was kind of the worst experience of my life though. Do not recommend,” Barrett explained with a shrug. Ilya knew that it meant a lot for Barrett to be sharing this information with them, to open up about such a difficult time in his life. It was amazing what a difference a year could make.
“Fuck, sorry man,” Haas said.
“I’ve always thought he seemed like a dick,” LaPointe added.
“No worries, it all worked out better than I could have imagined,” Barrett replied, getting the unrestrained smile on his face that meant he was thinking about Harris.
“Alright Bergy, who are you seeing? Sabrina Carpenter? Zendaya? A Kardashian?” Bood asked.
“Lena Patel,” the kid admitted, smiling brightly.
“Nice!” Young replied.
“Congrats bro!” LaPointe said.
“Aw, Rose worked with her on her last movie. She said she was super sweet to everyone,” Shane said, “Wait, I found the restaurant info! I’m texting it to you Bergy.”
As the conversation moved on and the team kept relentlessly yapping, Ilya cuddled into his husband’s side even closer, resting his head on his shoulder fondly. He should probably be more jealous, and okay his dick definitely had feelings about today’s revelation, but they would work that out later in the hotel room. Instead, Ilya felt like he was going to burst his chest was clenching so tightly. His husband, who was fiercely private, who still struggled to ignore the instinct to hide everything related to his identity and relationship, had just casually shared a story about a hookup to their entire team, one that he hadn’t even told Ilya. Shane had been so burned by Montreal that it had taken him a while to start letting his guard down with the guys. Ilya was so relieved to see him open up, to see him building real friendships. Ilya had no idea how they got so lucky, finding the Centaurs. It was a better family than he could have ever imagined.
“Sorry I never told you about that. Are you upset?” Shane asked quietly after the chaos had died down.
“No, never, moya luybov. We both have histories we’ve never talked about. I don’t need to know about every encounter you’ve ever had, you chose me and that’s all that matters,” Ilya replied, planting a gentle kiss on the top of his head.
“That’s how I feel too. All I really care about is our history together. The rest is just noise,” Shane agreed.
“But if you have any other mega famous hookups that I am much better at sex than, I would love to hear about it,” Ilya replied with a wink. Shane just rolled his eyes.
“I knew I was going to regret saying that. As if your ego wasn’t already big enough,” Shane said, exasperated.
“You know what else is big?” Ilya quipped back, thrilled for such a perfect setup.
“Fuck off Rozanov,” Shane chastised, unable to hold back his laugh.
“Yes, later,” Ilya agreed.
He would take an entire lifetime of February days spent traveling to beige hotels in mundane cities if it meant he got to have these moments with his husband forever.
