Poor Shane
Summary
Rose pieces together the facts about her boyfriend Shane Hollander. Poor Shane, now she needs to break it off.
Notes
Okay this might be a little OOC for Rose. I might have made her a little too Hollywood? Idk I've been sitting on this for a month unhappy with it and kept changing it. It orignially was part of a longer one-shot but it didn't fit the vibe.
The fact that Rose's makeup artist knew about Shane kinda irritated me about the TV show, so this is a bit of a fix-it. The makeup artist knew because Rose figured it out with them, ah of course! Friends talk about their sex lives, boom.
Enjoy!
Poor Shane
"You look tired, Rose," Bex, Rose's makeup artist, says while on set one day.
Last night, Rose and Miles went out to a club, Shane joining them after his winning game. Lots of dancing and drinks and going back to her wonderful boyfriend's apartment where-
Rose is sure it was the alcohol. Not that she's ever experienced issues before, but guys can have trouble performing with alcohol. Right?
If she was at her place, her pink vibrator would have fixed everything, but that's not something she generally brings to nightclubs.
"Uh, Shane and Miles went clubbing with me last night," Rose explains with an easy smile. "I ended up at Shane's place."
Bex oohs with a wide smile. "Okay, get it girl. Spill the beans."
Rose laughs and shakes her head. Usually, here in her trailer with her trusted makeup artist, they would talk boys and gossip. But what can she say?
"Nothing to tell. Really!" Rose insists when Bex gives her a glare. "We had drinks and we were tired when we got back."
"Uh oh." Bex tsks. "How bad was it? Is he into weird stuff like that one guy?"
Rose grimaces at the mention of Eric. He was hot, a model she worked with once before they went on a few dates. Then, during their first time in bed, he wanted her to wear a costume and 'submit herself,' as he had put it.
Rose is pro-kink, pro-sex. She believes everyone's fetishes are great, as long as it's safe and consensual. Which means not bringing up the kink mid-sex and without a conversation.
She ended up walking out without even taking her shirt off that night. Eric didn't respect her enough to have a discussion beforehand and she's not in the practice of allowing herself to be treated less than she deserves.
"No, no. Shane's so sweet I don't think he even knows what BDSM is." That earns an earnest laugh of of Bex. Rose sighs softly. "It's just… Guys have issues sometimes, right? Whiskey dick or whatever."
"Um, not in my experience." Bex starts on her eyebrows so Rose tries not to move her face too much. "Wait, so he couldn't do it?"
"He tried," Rose defends. She has such a sweet spot for Shane and she doesn't want to do him wrong. "I don't think he likes going down on me, but remember last week? It could be that."
Last week, they'd discussed the possibility of Shane being undiagnosed autistic. The strict rules he has for himself, the order, the routine, the social awkwardness, the confusion with Rose's casual jokes. It all makes sense. It also makes sense for Shane to not enjoy the… act of oral sex.
That doesn't make him a bad lover. It just means they need to find what works.
It dawns on Rose then. She exhales with relief. "My God, Bex! The club! He was probably overstimulated. It was so loud and the lights were flashing. He had just finished a game, too."
Dammit, she's such a bitch! She's sitting here, discussing a disappointed sexual encounter with her very sweet boyfriend, when he was probably two stimulus away from breaking down. No wonder he couldn't perform.
"Or," Bex says slowly. "Oh, you can relax. OR, he's gay?"
"Bex-"
"I know! But I said it last week and I'll say it again. He could be gay!"
Rose shakes her head. She's had gay boyfriends before. Hell, once she even went as a date to a wedding for a closeted gay friend. But Shane is different. He doesn't look at other guys at restaurants, doesn't enjoy shopping, or has any fashion sense.
She knows those are all stereotypes, but they're also things she has experienced before with her own gay boyfriend's.
Actually…
Rose frowns slightly as she thinks through the last few weeks of her relationship.
Shane doesn't look at guys or girls in public. Rose can only think of — maybe — twice that Shane has actually checked her out.
Shane doesn't not enjoy shopping. He's just as awkward as any other social interaction, but he never actually complains or declines to go. Maybe that's for her benefit, maybe he sees it as a boyfriend duty to go shopping, but he would be the first straight man Rose dated who didn't whine a little.
Fashion. Shane doesn't have fashion. He spends half his time in hockey gear, a fourth of his time in a gym, and the other fourth of his day includes sleeping, eating, and daily activities. It's more accurate to say that Shane doesn't have time for fashion rather than he doesn't have any.
"Oh no," Rose whispers.
"I'm still working on your contour, don't worry," Bex says quickly as they grab a new brush.
"No. Oh, fuck."
Shane is gay.
Everything clicks into place. Rose doesn't quite know what it is, but everything seems to make sense now. The relatively bad sex, the hesitation Shane has to even touch Rose — which she previously chalked up to some kind of aggressive level of respect for her as a woman.
"Bex, you can't say anything." Rose trusts Bex. They've been her artist for years, but she still feels like it needs to be said.
"Hey, your sex life is no one's business except mine and your diary," Bex says. It's the same inside joke they've had for years. "He's gay, isn't he?"
"I think so?"
"My gaydar never lies. Queer can smell queer."
Rose groans and bites her lip, which thankfully doesn't have lipstick on them yet or Bex would have thrown a brush at her. Her poor Shane. She can't keep up a relationship with him. No, that wouldn't be fair to either of them.
Tonight. They already have plans for dinner at a pretty secluded spot. She'll talk to him.
Then, another thought comes to her.
"Wait…" Rose tries to organize her mind. The blushed looks, the fleeting hands, the unsure vibe Shane constantly gives out. "Do you think he knows he's gay?"
Bex purses their lips and sucks on her teeth. "You know, babe, you have a point."
"Fuck," Rose whispers.
Poor Shane.
"Talk him through it," Bex advises. "Later. I need to get your lip liner on so stop with the teeth or I swear to God."
As Rose sits in the makeup chair with her lips frozen for Bex, she starts planning the conversation she needs to have with her new-almost-ex-gay boyfriend.
Poor Shane.
