This fic is set during the two weeks at the cottage. Pretty much right after they say “I love you” to each other, but right before David shows up.

Beeping mixed with people talking could be heard all around Shane. He regretted not taking his headphones with him. Usually he would've, but when Ilya told him that he might need to buy some groceries, he wasn't really thinking of anything but getting it over with as soon as possible.

He had stocked up on everything they needed beforehand for a reason. They both knew they couldn't go out to buy things together, so Shane wanted to spend as little time possible outside the cottage. With the way things were going, he only needed to go out this one time for the weeks they were staying together.

Now, waiting at the cash register, he told himself to just sit through these next few minutes. He would be back with Ilya in just a moment. He really was getting greedy. Shane was able to go months without seeing Ilya before, and now he's missing him after such a short amount of time?

He needed to get a grip of himself. As much as the past few days were amazing — spending his whole day with Ilya — the two weeks will be over eventually, and he will have to go back to seeing him just every few months.

Though for now, he won't think about that. There's no reason to ruin the time he has with depressing thoughts. A vibration from Shane's pocket broke him out of his train of thought. Looking at the line of people in front of him, he still had some time to answer whoever it was that may have texted him.

A smile graced Shane's face, despite the utterly ridiculous message he got.

Lily: I'm bored.

Shane: Please, I've been gone for half an hour

Lily: Yes, I know. Is horrible.

Lily: I am housewife waiting for her husband to come back from war.

Shane: ???

Shane: I'm just at the supermarket buying groceries. I'll be back in twenty minutes.

Lily: Twenty minutes you could be sucking my cock.

Lily: Or taking my dick up your ass.

Lily: You decide.

Shane: You are unbelievable.

Shane: I'll stay at war.

Lily: You think you're strong enough for that?

Shane: You know how strong I am.

Lily: You mean from last time in Montreal when you slammed me against the wall?

Lily: Barely hurt.

Lily: Definitely not strong enough.

Shane: I hate you.

Shane: I should've punched you in the face instead.

Shane put his phone away after that. He was finally approaching the cashier, and he preferred not to look like some asshole who can't even take his eyes off his screen for two seconds. Once he arrived back at the cottage, he checked his phone again, after ignoring the onslaught of notifications while driving.

Lily: Yes, ok, true

Lily: You should be my housewife

Lily: You can stay in my house while I play hockey

Lily: Then I come home to fuck you

Lily: or you suck my dick

Lily: Good idea, yes?

Lily: Jane?

Lily: Come onnnn

Lily: Stop ignoring me

Shane shook his head while smiling. Ilya should've known that he would have to drive home at some point. He definitely wasn't going to text while driving. Though perhaps Shane would've ignored those messages even if he wasn't driving.

He put his phone away and saw Ilya standing outside the front door with his arms crossed, trying to put on a serious expression. If it wasn't so obviously fake, Shane might have been scared that he actually did something wrong.

"Are you gonna help me with bringing the groceries inside, or are you just going to stand there?" Shane asked.

When Ilya didn't move from his spot, Shane let out a small chuckle. "Fine, ignore me. Were you expecting me to text you back while driving?" He took both grocery bags himself and carried them inside. The click of the door shutting behind him followed by footsteps notified him of Ilya following him.

"I just thought you should get to show off your strength a little bit." Ilya's arms wrapped around him from behind, while his mouth found Shane's neck.

"Ilya, I need to put the things away first," Shane said, but simultaneously bared his neck for Ilya to continue. After a minute, Shane pushed him away. "Okay, okay, stop. Seriously. It'll just take a few minutes."

Ilya sighed. "Fine." He moved to one of the bags. "I will help because I am very nice, but after, I will make you regret ignoring me."

"I can't text while driving!"

Guys, I swear I saw Shane Hollander in some random store in Lanaudière, and at first I was like omg this is so cool, like I'm actually seeing an NHL player in real life!! But then it got really dark really quickly… He was waiting at the cash register, so I got in line behind him. And then I saw the text messages he was sending someone (I'm guessing his girlfriend???) and now I'm kinda scared ngl. Like istg I wasn't trying to snoop, but also he was positioning his phone in such a way where it was impossible not to look. Sue me for being intrigued.

I took pics btw. You can't identify Shane from the text picture, but I feel like it should be obvious from the way his clothes are the same as the one where you can clearly tell it's him. He also has like the same build, so I'm just saying if you don't think those are Shane's texts, you're either blind or delusional. Sorry about the pics being kinda blurry, but I was trying to stay kinda subtle. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks these texts are weird and creepy as fuck??

I know the main focus is on the DV (which totally makes sense, don't get me wrong that IS horrible), but also even if we ignored that, Hollander's girlfriend is "hiding" in his cottage and he told her she's couldn't be a housewife since she apparently can't clean up after herself??? A loud slam broke Shane out of his trance from sucking Ilya's cock. After quickly putting away the groceries earlier, Ilya dragged him toward the bedroom, where he — fully clothed — tortured Shane for an eternity, before finally letting him come.

Now, Shane was going to return the favor, but that slam sounded exactly like a door closing, and it was not nearly quiet enough to have been the wind. Shane knew the doors in his house and the sound they made when closed. That was definitely his front door being slammed shut by a person.

With the only people that have a key being himself and his parents, it was clear that they must have showed up. Shane's heart was already beating out of his chest at the prospect of his parents finding Ilya, but what worried him on top of that was just how loud that slam was.

Neither of his parents are the type to just slam doors, especially not when Shane was supposed to be on a silent retreat, so if they were doing it now, they must be angry. He could only pray that they were angry at something they needed to tell him and not at him. Because if they were angry at him, there was only one explanation Shane could come up with — they must have figured out about Ilya.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck." Shane practically jumped off the bed, already putting on his pants while also grabbing his shirt. "I— someone is here. Probably my parents. Hide."

Shane wasn't going to jump to the worst possible conclusion immediately. If there was still a chance that this was not about Ilya, he needed him out of his parents sight.

Ilya just stared at him for a second before quickly moving as well. "Bathroom okay?"

"Hopefully. I think it's your best bet. I'm gonna—" Shane pointed to the door, after having managed to haphazardly get his clothes on. "I'm really sorry."

"It's okay, Shane. Just… hurry up and get out before they come in."

From what Shane could briefly see from his mirror, he at least looked presentable enough; as long as you didn't pay too much attention. He could only hope that his parents wouldn't notice anything off about his appearance.

Shane got out of his bedroom, quickly shutting it behind him even if there was no real point, and briskly walked toward the kitchen, where he could hear his parents. Once there, he was confronted by his mom holding his phone in her hand, while both of them looked with an indescribably calm expression.

If Shane didn't know they were mad, he'd think nothing was wrong. But with the knowledge of their anger, the calmness in their expression only stressed him out more.

"Haven't been checking your phone for a while?" His mom said; her tone icy

"No," Shane croaked. It was becoming increasingly clear to him that his parents were actually mad at him. His father was now looking at him with an expression that Shane could only interpret as disappointment. And also disgust?

"Did you know you've been photographed by someone while you were out?" Mom asked. She was leaning against the kitchen counter, staring at him intensely.

"No?" Shane said. He knew there must have been more to that, but his brain wasn't running fast enough for him to figure out what exactly it was. He was sort of preoccupied with trying to keep his panic at bay.

"Specifically, you were photographed texting. Someone posted a picture of the… charming texts you've sent." Mom continued.

Looking back on his day, Shane knew his mom could only be talking about his texts to Ilya. There wasn't anyone else he had texted that day; much less while he was out. How could he have been so stupid? Openly texting Ilya outside, seriously?

He tried to get his mind to catch up. Okay, so his parents were mad at him. That part was evident. From what he remembered, he hadn't used Ilya's name, so all they should know was that he was gay. Shane was really hoping his parents hadn't seen the vulgar texts, though he didn't quite believe that he would be so lucky.

And it wasn't just his parents who had found out. From what his mom said, the whole internet knew.

Shane knew he needed to stay in the moment. His parents were here, and they were mad at him. Really mad from the looks of it and also disappointed. Hurt spread through him. He had hoped that his parents might be a little more accepting, but he quickly realized that he was obviously wrong.

Was he remembering wrong? Did he accidentally mention Ilya's name in the texts? Was that why his parents were this mad or did they genuinely have such a big issue with their son being gay?

Shane knew that — despite how much he wished his parents would support him being gay — the alternative would be worse. Because if he had mentioned Ilya, then he would've outed not only himself but also Ilya through his stupidity. Shane knew that he wouldn't ever be able to forgive himself for that.

His vision was starting to blur. Shane had to tear his face away from his parents; he didn't think he could bear to see his father's disappointed look any longer than he already had.

"Let me see," Shane said, trying to grab for his phone from his mom's hand.

"At least have the courage to look me in the eyes when speaking to me."

Shane head flinched to meet her gaze. The way she was looking at him — he hadn't ever seen that look on her face before. In his entire life, no matter how much he messed up, she had never looked at him like that.

His tears were dangerously close to falling as he took his phone. Was it really that bad to them that he was gay? He'd always thought his parents would be fine with it. He really thought—

Shane cut off the thought before he got caught up in it. There was no point now. He needed to see what exactly his parents had seen. Maybe he really was just coming to the worst possible conclusion.

Looking at her son now, it was hard to reconcile this version with the one that she read of, in the text exchange. Yuna had been furious on her way here, and she was really trying not to immediately yell at Shane and discuss this in a civil way first. So she had come into the house calmly.

When she saw Shane's phone on the kitchen counter, she realized he must not have even seen her texts. She was tempted to go through his phone, but she didn't think there was a point. If Shane actually had an explanation for his behaviour, then she would know soon. If not, she didn't want to see any more of the texts her son might have sent. She was really questioning just where exactly she went wrong in her parenting.

Of course, Yuna couldn't stop her maternal instincts from kicking in when she saw the way Shane looked at her. He's never been the kid to cry often, so the few times when he did were special. It was obvious to her that he was trying to hold himself together, and he was also so clearly failing.

Shane looking like an absolute wreck while going through his phone was probably the only reason she hasn't completely lost her temper yet.

He must've found the picture, because his eyes were now frantically darting across, probably reading at record speed. He momentarily looked confused, before starting to read again. If Yuna had to guess, Shane was probably reading the messages again and didn't even catch any of what he was reading the first time, considering how fast he was going.

"Oh, thank god," he muttered through his breath, while letting out a sigh.

And now Yuna was definitely losing her temper.

"Thank god?" She repeated. "What the fuck, Shane!"

Shane's head jerked toward her. He evidently hadn't intended to voice that comment out loud.

"I mean—" Shane started, before going quiet again and looking away. Though he looked significantly less upset, which only upset her more.

"Yes? Please enlighten me. What did you mean? Because from where I'm standing, I find out through the internet that my son not only has a girlfriend that I've never heard of, but also abuses said girlfriend!"

"Well…"

"Look at me, Shane! If you can text her like that then you can look at your mother when she is talking to you! You fucking coward!" She yelled.

That certainly got his attention. She never thought she would be in a situation where she wouldn't feel bad for making her son look as scared as he looked right now. Though she also hadn't thought her son would've been capable of sending those texts. At least he was now facing her directly.

"Look, I— I don't really know what to say," Shane trailed off.

"You don't know what to say?" David suddenly interjected. "Can you give us a reasonable explanations for those texts or not?"

Yuna was honestly impressed with how long her husband managed to stay quiet beside her. He has always managed to suppress his temper longer than her, but this was too much, even for him.

Shane slowly shook his head. "I really can't…"

"You can't? You're telling me you slammed your girlfriend against a wall?" David was now also yelling.

"Yes?" Shane said, cringing at himself. "Fuck, mom, I'm sorry."

"You're sorry?" She yelled. "To me?"

"I—"

"Do you realize the kind of language you used? Do you always tell your girlfriend to shut up?"

"Yes, I know. I mean, no, I don't— I—"

When she realized that Shane wasn't going to say more than that, she continued. "Is Lily here?"

Any color that was still left in Shane's face suddenly drained. "What?"

"Is she here?"

"No." Shane immediately answered.

Yuna knew her son, and she also knew that he was a horrible liar. It's truly impressive that he managed to lie about this so long. But it was still clear that she definitely was here.

"Where?"

"Mom. Please." Shane had that pleading look on his face. The one that would've normally made her let go of anything. Just not today.

"Shane Hollander."

"Okay, I think is enough. Let's please calm down. Shane is not abusing anyone," a voice suddenly said.

That must have been Lily, since there was no way Shane had anyone else at his cottage. The only problem with that theory was that the voice was definitely male, with an accent that sounded very Russian and also very familiar.

Yuna whipped around to see none other than Ilya Rozanov coming out of her son's bedroom. She was stunned in place, probably with her mouth open as well; she couldn't really tell at the moment.

"We were just joking over text, yes? About hockey. Because Shane slammed me into wall last time I played against Montreal. During hockey."

"Hockey." Yuna repeated stiffly.

Trying to remember the last game where Boston played against Montreal was futile. She might remember much, but she certainly wouldn't remember every time someone slammed someone against the board.

Maybe she would've remembered Shane punching someone during a game, but he didn't do that, because he wasn't the type to do that often. Though even if he did, it would've been a normal part of hockey.

"Wait, does that mean you're Lily?" David asked. He looked about just as confused as Yuna.

"Okay, can we please— I don't know… sit down? I can actually explain this now." Shane said. Yuna could tell that he was nervous again, much like when she first arrived.

"Uh, yeah sure." Yuna sat down at the kitchen table in a daze and waited for the others to follow her.

"So… this is Ilya… Rozanov." Shane gestured toward Rozanov. "But, uh, you knew that. I'm gay, and we've been… uhm…" Shane looked away. "Hooking up? For a while now… and I saved his contact on my phone as Lily, so that people wouldn't figure out it's him. And he likes to tease me over text sometimes. So he teased me about hockey. I swear it was just hockey. I would never…" Shane's voice cracked.

The story made sense, and it was certainly a much better explanation for the texts than her son being abusive towards a girl. If Shane had somehow come up with this whole story and gotten Ilya Rozanov here just to cover that up, she would seriously be impressed, so she could only believe that Shane really was telling the truth.

Yuna really messed up. Of course her son hadn't abused his girlfriend. She knew him well enough. She should've known that he could never do something like that. Though she was also aware that there was always a chance of being mistaken. Some people were able to hide their real personality even from the people they were closest to.

But Shane wasn't doing that. And now she had been the one to upset him, so she also needed to make it right again.

"Honey," she whispered, reaching a hand out to Shane, who took it while burying his head in his other hand.

"I couldn't really explain without telling you about him, and I wasn't sure whether he was okay with that, and I also wasn't sure whether I was okay with that… so I just couldn't say anything…" Shane was staring at the kitchen table intently.

"I uh, thought you weren't gonna leave without seeing Lily, so I thought I might as well stop hiding," Rozanov said.

"So is this like a hate sex thing?"

"David!" Yuna elbowed her husband. Not only was that inappropriate, but she could also clearly tell from the way the two were acting that they didn't hate each other.

"What? I thought we hated him." David took a look at Rozanov before adding. "Sorry."

Rozanov didn't look particularly bothered by it and just waved him off. "Is okay."

"No, actually…" Shane finally looked up at them and then to Rozanov. "I love him."

"I love you too." Rozanov whispered back, interlocking one of his hands with Shane's.

And yeah, Yuna knew the expression that Rozanov was giving Shane in that moment. It was one that showed pure adoration. He looked the same way David always looked at her. From the corner of her eye, she could tell that David had also noticed.

"Oh," David just said.

"So are you two, like, together? In a relationship?" Yuna asked.

"Yes," Rozanov answered, before looking at Shane and adding, "Right?"

Shane took a moment of just looking at Rozanov before finally saying, "Yeah. We are. He's my boyfriend."

Yuna couldn't help but notice the smile that graced Rozanov's face when he heard that. She never realized the guy was able to smile like that. All she knew was the cocky smile he always showed to the reporters, but she could tell that this was different. This smile was genuine.

"Is that… okay? With you? Me being gay, I mean. And, uh, Ilya." Shane asked.

The fear in his eyes made Yuna's heart break. When had she given him the impression that she wouldn't be okay with it?

"Of course, Shane. We would never have a problem with you being gay, or with whom. If Rozanov makes you happy then that's all that matters."

"Ilya," Rozanov said. "Call me Ilya."

"Okay." Yuna nodded. She reasoned that it probably would be really strange to call her son's boyfriend by his last name.

Shane suddenly had tears in his eyes again. "Thank you. I—"

Why was he thanking her? Yuna really needed to understand just why exactly Shane was acting the way he was. "Hey, you want to come outside for a minute?"

"Yeah okay."

Yuna guided Shane on their way out. She could feel him trembling under her arm.

Shane started speaking again once they were outside. He apologized. He apologized to her for being gay. Her son hat felt the need to apologize to her for loving someone.

She assured him that it was fine and told him that she was the one who was sorry for him not feeling like he could tell her. But something was still gnawing in the back of her head. This feeling that Shane was a little too scared of both her and David's reaction.

"Was there anything we did to make you feel like we wouldn't accept you?" She asked

"No! I was just scared for no real reason most of the time. I thought you'd probably be fine with it. It's just… today when you came in you were so mad… and I had no idea what you were mad about, so when I heard about the texts I just thought you found out I'm gay. I thought—" Shane took a deep breath. "Dad looked so disappointed and I could tell that you were barely holding it together, and I thought it was just about me being gay and…" A sob stopped him from continuing to talk.

But there was nothing more her son had to say because Yuna finally understood. As she took Shane into her arms, rubbing his back while he cried on her shoulder, she finally looked back to their interactions that day.

All the puzzle pieces connected together. The way he looked so miserable when they first arrived. His relief once he actually read the messages and found out his sexuality hadn't been revealed through them. How he was more nervous again once Rozan— Ilya came out and explained.

She apologised for the way both her and David talked to him when they first got here. It was obvious that Shane wanted to say something against it — tell her it was fine, when it clearly wasn't — but Yuna just held him closer and made him listen to his well-deserved apology.

"You think you're ready to go back inside?" Yuna asked, after Shane's crying stopped.

"Yeah."

As soon as they sat back down, Ilya took one of Shane's hands and pulled him close, while whispering something into his ear. Whatever he was whispering must have been comforting because Shane visibly relaxed into his touch. The longer Yuna knew this version of Ilya Rozanov, the more she started to like him. He was clearly good for Shane.

They sat in silence for a while. Yuna wanted Shane to actually relax before she brought her next point up, but she knew she had to. "I hate to say it, but I think we really have to talk about how the hell we handle those pictures from a media perspective. I understand that we can't give the actual explanation, but we really do have to say something, and I really don't know what we could possibly say."

"Can we not just… let it go?" Ilya made some kind of waving motion with his hand. "We don't say anything and just wait for everyone to forget?"

"Usually, I would say that's the best option, but those texts really do sound like domestic violence. Sponsors might very well drop out. Did you read what was in the picture?" She suddenly realized that he was probably staying in Shane's bedroom the entire time they were outside arguing, he might not have even seen the post.

"Yes," Ilya said.

"Could we deny that it was me?" Shane asked.

"We could… but I'd rather not. Even from the picture showing only the text messages, it's very clearly you. I don't think it'd be believable at all," Yuna answered.

"Then I think we have to pretend like it was a joke, no?" Ilya said.

Shane looked at him for a second, seemingly considering the idea. "I agree. I'm honestly not a fan of it, but I think it's the only option."

"I guess you two are right. Those replies you sent," she looked at Ilya, "could help in our case of making it sound like joking around—"

"Which it technically was, by the way." David interjected. He looked around at their stunned faces and continued. "What? You're all treating this as if those texts weren't joking. Those replies clearly sound like joking. We are sort of just telling the truth. We just have to come up with a different explanation."

"Right. Of course." Yuna nodded. "Do we have a different explanation though?"

"I have an idea for what explanation could be…" Ilya said. "Perhaps Lily should also make an account. Might be more believable."

Yuna thought about it. "No matter what, people are going to believe we're just giving random excuses. We definitely need an official statement, but I guess a statement from Lily would help as well. Maybe that one could be less PR-sounding and more… authentic."
