the wonderful secret world of hockey rpf
Summary
What if everything was the same, but Shane and Ilya were both secretly Hollanov fic authors?
Notes
This was supposed to be under 5K words, I believe, but I did it again folks... It was super fun, though, so thank you Rusakko for giving me the opportunity!
Disclaimer 1: I've honestly been scared to post given that the HR ficdom is constantly in shambles, so if people treat me the same way I will not hesitate to pull the plug. Remember that fic is written For Free and For Fun. If you don't like this fic, close the tab and move on with your day! You're entitled to your opinion if you're not shoving it in my face or dictating how I write, and there's plenty of other amazing fics that you might enjoy instead.
Disclaimer 2: Every embedded fic has tags, so please read them carefully just in case there's something you might not like! If you need to skip a fic, I hope I've put enough context around it that you won't be missing much. Definitely let me know (politely) if there's a missing tag that you think might be important enough to include.
This fic absolutely would not have been possible without fractionallyfoxtrot. I owe her my life for coding the AO3 work skin embeds from near scratch and cleaning up all the messes I tried to do with the Twitter and other coding. Thank you for everything.

Push And Pulled Taut
Summary:
Shane Hollander is slowly coming to terms with something he can't deny anymore.
OR:
Shane lets Ilya seduce him with perhaps concerningly little resistance.
Notes:
Look guys, I know I said I would never write RPF. They're real people and it's still a weird feeling but… when the commercial came out I guess the ship edits started to make sense.
So here goes nothing. Hello, new fandom. Enjoy… whatever this is.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
If Shane really stopped to think about it, he supposes that spring training had been the start of it all.
There’s not much of a time difference between Montreal and Boston, but traveling never sits right with him no matter the distance. Predictably, he’d slept terribly the night before when they’d arrived at the hotel, so the only way to settle his brain and body is the soothing routine of working out early the next morning.
But Shane doesn’t remember going through the motions. What he does remember now—nearly a year later, shoved into a tiny hallway closet next to the commercial shoot dressing room sweaty and half hard—is that knowing, irritating smirk of Ilya’s from well across the home team’s weight room. The eye contact. The deliberate flex of his arms before tugging for cable core rotations. The wink as Shane slowed to a stop, breathing hard.
When he’d shaken Shane’s hand after the game the next day, his fingers had caught around Shane’s wrist, briefly but long enough for Shane to blink and Ilya to smirk again in return.
“Let’s have a good season,” he’d said, voice low and sultry smooth.
Fuck.
Shane should be over it. It’s been months. He’s had too many brand deals his mom keeps negotiating and senior pitchers to learn to manage and call for and the general stress of rookie season to juggle. Ilya should be the furthest thing from his mind.
But here he is, hiding after a commercial shoot he’d been pushed into last minute with an all-too-smug Ilya and his all-too-smug smirk directly across from him in his unbuttoned Raiders jersey, that chain of his glinting from underneath against an unfortunately very nice chest.
Shane had escaped right as the directors called cut.
He can do this. He can’t and won’t touch himself even as his dick strains against the confines of his underwear and uniform pants. He’s not thinking about the perfect curve of Ilya’s ass in form-fitting pants or the way he’d held a bat between his legs and stroked along the entire length of the underside from the grip tape to the tip of the barrel—where someone could have seen!—and chuckled quietly to himself at Shane staring at it, transfixed, swallowing for his dry throat. Groaning, he braces his forearms against the wall of the closet and whispers over and over again for his erection to go away.
The thing is, Shane’s not gay.
Right?
Of course, as if in answer, the door opens instead.
Shane yelps, but Ilya’s fingers close over his mouth, and he backs Shane properly into the wall, letting the door shut behind him until there's only dimness and proximity.
“Just me,” he says. His accent is thicker when his voice gets low like that.
Shane tears his hand away, brain catching up. “What are you doing?”
Ilya doesn’t answer immediately, doesn't pull his hand away from Shane’s grip. Instead, it's Shane who watches Ilya's lips curl upward lazily and looks down at their hands, who drops Ilya's hand like it's on fire.
"Please get out," he says, looking to the side so that he doesn't have to look at Ilya's face.
But Ilya presses closer, and something like want spikes in Shane's chest at the feeling of his clothed erection against Shane's.
"You're sending me away?" His voice is surprisingly quiet, but no less assured. "I thought you want to kiss me."
Unfortunately, he does. It's the only thing Shane knows for sure right now. He can't stop himself from looking back at Ilya, following Ilya's gaze down to his lips. It's much too easy to do nothing to stop Ilya when he settles his hands on Shane's hips, when he touches his jaw, his neck. Shane can feel his own traitorous lips moving slightly in anticipation and closing his eyes by reflex as Ilya holds his chin steady and leans in.
The first kiss feels like letting out a breath after holding it for so long. Shane instinctively responds as Ilya leans in for another, and another, grabbing Shane's hair as they both let out muffled moans. Shane can feel the outline of that infuriating smirk against his lips as Ilya draws him closer, trying to undo the buttons of Shane's jersey as he goes. Shane's hands work on their own, fumbling with the belt and fly of Ilya's pants and reaching into his underwear for his cock just to see, just to feel, at least while he's letting himself do all this without thinking.
The groan Ilya lets out is worth it. He ruts forward into Shane's hand until he takes over, shoving Shane's pants and underwear aside only just enough to grab both of their cocks. It's Shane's turn to moan, clutching at him as Ilya spits over the both of them in the absence of lube and frots up against him urgently, pressing him further against the closet wall.
Shane's brain is lost in a hazy jumble of god, is this what was missing and there's no coming back from this and oh god what if someone walks in. All he can do is hold on as Ilya presses his tongue to Shane's and kisses all over his neck, heavy and openmouthed like he's starving, too.
If this is how Shane tumbles headfirst into the pits of hell, then so be it.
Notes:
Forgive me for I have sinned, or however that saying goes.
RozyHollzy, these_bones_of_mine, dilfmagnet69, fractionallyfoxtrot, HiraethSatisfied, dudewhatthehell, chrischan0325, LoveYouTooMwah, centerwinger81, checkplsandthankyou, fiveholescore, WearsManyHatTricks, cellybration, xXNadaG00seEggXx, Libtastic, GreasyGrinders, and Hollawitzer left kudos on this work!
Honestly, what the hell is he doing.
Shane's fingers hover over the keyboard, lingering over the comment reply button. He'd turned it over and over in his head half to death—how much was okay to post, how not only is he writing RPF but also self-insert fic, technically, about himself and his biggest rival.
Is it strange? Undoubtedly. Is it risky? To the hundredth degree. But fanfiction is one of his few outlets. Escapism. He'd always been better at putting his feelings into written words than expressing and processing them out loud, and if the thoughts stayed in his head, scraping at his skull and bouncing off the confined walls like rabid dogs, he'd truly crack.
So when he'd had a little crush on a teammate in junior league, he'd written about it. When he'd kept hoping that two characters would be in a queer relationship on screen as his parents talked about the canon heterosexual couple, he'd written about it.
When he'd finally given in to Ilya Rozanov and gotten the best head of his life, he'd written about it.
What he'd finally published on his secret little Archive of Our Own account isn't even a fraction of what he's written. He'd carefully catalogued the flash of heat he'd felt as Ilya had touched himself in the locker room shower and watched Shane's reactions, the way he couldn't tear his eyes away even as every cell in his body screamed danger. He'd relived the way Ilya had pressed him into the door of the hotel room, Ilya's hot and heavy tongue, his surprise when Ilya had so earnestly and genuinely told him no, he wouldn't leave him hanging, that he wouldn't actually be the asshole Shane and the world sees on the ice.
It's all too much to keep to himself in random notes and private documents, though. He's vaguely been aware of the hockey RPF fandom, of course, being an actual player and writing for other fandoms, but when he'd really deep dived into it and unlocked the potential in his brain, well… this had happened. He'd tried to leave out most of the incriminating detail and also make it an alternate universe in another sport, but the worry gnaws at him. The kudos and hit counts are low for now, but he's ready to delete all this at any moment.
If anyone ever found out it's him behind the screen, if his mom found out, he might lose his career, maybe. The MLH isn't quite known for being queer-friendly, and he's definitely heard questionable, borderline homophobic things in locker rooms his entire life.
Maybe he should have changed their names and made it an original work, or used characters from fandoms he's already written in their circumstances. But there's a certain sort of satisfaction and immersion of actually having been there and experienced these things that he's not sure he would feel with a layer of removal. This is personal to him, after all.
Slowly, he closes the window and pushes himself back from his desk, images of Ilya's irritatingly handsome face close above him still flitting through his mind, the phantom weight of Ilya's cock on his tongue persistent.
He's not sure what all this means, yet. He's not even sure if he's gay, but clearly he's feeling something significant about Ilya that he hasn't felt about anyone else. Clearly it's enough to have made him dip his toes into a whole new fandom space he's not completely ready for.
He'll just have to wait to see whether this was the worst decision of his life.

feels like home
Summary:
Ilya gets to see a side of Shane that no one else does.
Notes:
first fanfic under new pseud. like always english is not my first language, if you correct me i fill your pillow with cement.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
This whole dating thing is new, but Shane is familiar.
Ilya is lucky to see him when he is relaxed, when he is at home and not dressed to go anywhere, when he is soft and sleepy walking into Ilya's kitchen and wearing his hoodie. When he reaches out for Ilya and Ilya can just accept him into his arms.
"Hi," Ilya says. He is aware that his voice has become soft. He does not care because he knows Shane likes that. "Good morning."
Shane mumbles good morning back to him, but is muffled into Ilya's shirt. He says something else, but Ilya has to pull back a little bit to try to hear it.
"What was that?"
"I said, you left."
Shane's pout is like a sad puppy, and Ilya can never resist him like that, so he kisses him. Many people do not see the expressions Shane makes, but he is more expressive the more Ilya looks at him. His pout is very small, really just the tight corners of his mouth and his sparkly eyes with tiny lift of his eyebrows, but it feels clear as day now that Ilya is looking at him all the time.
"I'm sorry," Ilya says, rubbing his back gently. "Tomorrow I stay in bed. With you."
Shane does not respond right away. His mouth has relaxed some, even curling upward at the corners a little. Ilya can feel his body becoming less tense.
"What?"
Slowly, Shane shakes his head and shuffles forward a little more, chest pressed against Ilya's. Like this, Ilya can see every cute little freckle of his in details. He likes the way that Shane's smile grows a tiny bit bigger. It is relief, he thinks. He wants to know why.
"You said tomorrow." Shane's voice is lighter. "So you're going to let me stay over again?"
"Of course," Ilya scoffs. He would let Shane stay every night if he could. He wonders if Shane knows that already. "You're addicted to me, I'm being so kind."
Shane snorts. "Fuck you," he says, but it never sounds defensive anymore, and he still has that tiny smile.
Ilya can't help kissing him again. It feels very right to have him here, in his kitchen, in his arms.
"There will be plenty of time for that tonight."
"Ilya, I swear to god…"
Ilya just laughs as he goes to open the refrigerator.
Notes:
wow so cute okay now go leave comment losers
Hollamuffin, inthecityohgod, GlucoseGuardian, fractionallyfoxtrot, HiraethSatisfied, jaamsapplesauce, hopeboos, acefluff, and EscapistNerd left kudos on this work!
The real reason Ilya had written this fic is because he can still see Shane's anxious eyes underneath him after the All-Star Game a couple weeks ago as they'd talked about meeting again to hook up after today's cancelled game. Shane had been trembling, and Ilya is no stranger to panic attacks. He's glad that Shane had nodded and seemed happy to follow his lead to calm down, but Ilya wonders how much of it lingers.
He has a couple theories about it, though he's not sure Shane will ever trust him enough to confirm them. It's already scary to be closeted in the hockey world—which is why he'd tried not to be too much of an asshole when Shane had asked for explicit confirmation that he wouldn't tell anyone—but it's also scary for someone who is in the middle of a likely sexuality crisis to be seeing the same guy multiple times, and the potential of allowing him into his home. Ilya can understand that it feels more like commitment, and with commitment also comes what Ilya thinks is a bit of abandonment issues as well. Combine all this into the neurodivergent soup that is clearly Shane's brain, and panic attacks are probably not far behind.
So this is his way of apologizing into the void and manifesting, a little bit. He'd started writing English fics out of both defiance and escapism, and its scary to have a record that his brother or father or the Russian police could find—especially now that he's used both his and Shane's names—but it's his own little pocket fantasy that he can control and shape however he wants, and he can't give that up. He wants Shane to have the same level of comfort and safety as in the fic, and he sure as hell doesn't know if he can be the one to provide it, but hooking up with Shane has left him with such a protective feeling amongst the attraction and everything else. He hadn't been expecting this during his campaign to get Shane in his bed, but then, he'd let himself be with Shane twice now.
"No strings, huh," he murmurs in Russian, head tilted back to look at the ceiling of his living room.
He'd moved out here instead of the desk in his bedroom because Svetlana is still sleeping in there. The message from his phone taunts him, a disappointed Next time, I guess? from Shane that he feels too guilty to respond to. First the snow, then Svetlana… he's already fucking up, isn't he?
All he has is this fic, a little hopeless wish of alternate reality.
The next day when he's alone again, he opens AO3 to a few new notifications—some kudos, and a few comments which he hadn't been expecting. The first couple are fairly generic and he ignores them, but the third one gives him pause.
EscapistNerd Thu 03 Feb 2011 08:36AM EDT
Hi there, I don't usually comment but I've been doing a deep dive into this fandom and usually I don't see these two being this soft with each other, although that could be because they're still rookies and don't have many fics yet. Anyway, it's really comforting and nice and I'm happy you chose to write them the way you did. Thanks for writing this.
Ilya raises an eyebrow. What EscapistNerd says is true—most of the writers in the fandom are fixated on the public image they have, the rivals with unresolved sexual tension and Ilya's playboy image and Shane's flat emotionless-seeming appearance. He could stand to have someone like-minded around so he has hopefully more accurate fics to read, not that he hasn't enjoyed other interpretations.
Out of curiosity, he clicks over to EscapistNerd's dashboard. Some scattered anime fics, mostly one or two a fandom, but at the top is Hockey RPF, with six Hollanov fics already. When he clicks on it and scrolls, his eyebrow raises slightly at seeing every single one marked Explicit, but hey, he's not here to judge. He might enjoy some of these, even.
The user's brand seems to be porn with only a tiny modicum of plot, set in various alternate universes, but Ilya does rather like their penchant for explicit consent (or at least mutual enthusiasm) and yes, the softer dominant tendencies they've framed him with. The way they've written him is actually pretty flattering, almost a more idealized version of how he actually is. Ilya's laughed or cringed his way through several out-of-character fics about him being dismissive to Shane's needs or only there to have a good time, but this author seems to put a lot more thought into Ilya's character through fic Shane's perspective, making even their smut more intimate in a way.
Before he knows it, Ilya's read all six fics, bookmarked them for later, and subscribed to the user. He should probably respond to their comment, and maybe he'll go back later and leave some comments on their fics too. Authors supporting authors, and all that.
unrivaled (starfragments) Thu 03 Feb 2011 06:45PM EDT
nice of you to say. i prefer them like this too
went through some of your fics and will comment later, looking forward to more. thank you
It's sort of stilted, but hopefully his sincerity shows through. And even if they don't respond, maybe Ilya will be able to read more of their fics later.
For now, he should probably focus on hockey.
Shane is probably leaning on user unrivaled (starfragments) more than he'd like to admit.
Part of it is missing Ilya, he supposes (after he'd taken a while to admit that to himself). Not being able to see him after that cancelled game and never getting a text to reschedule had really messed with his head, but no matter what his RSD tells him, it had been circumstances out of his control, and there's probably a good reason for Ilya not texting him back.
Still, he's allowed to feel disappointed, and he deals with it like he always does: doubling down on the hockey, doubling down on the fanfic escapism.
He writes a fic where he's masturbating to the thought of Ilya, because it happens more than once. He writes an AU where he has a wet dream about Ilya bending him over a pool table and wakes up coming all over his sheets. He writes a lot that he doesn't post. It feels like the only way to deal with the confusion in his head and his slow coping with queerness without the actual Ilya to talk to.
User unrivaled (starfragments) comments on every fic, too, so Shane has started to return the favor. He likes their sort of dry sarcasm but honest vibe, and it's clear that their English is improving greatly as well, so Shane feels a bit proud, but doesn't say anything about it out of anxiety of sounding condescending. In contrast to Shane's slightly desperate outpouring of smut, unrivaled (starfragments) seems to be finding every fluffy scenario they can find. It's sort of a guilty pleasure in its own way, Shane reading about fictional Hollanov on a romantic beach trip curled up in bed past midnight and wishing he could let himself have it.
Writing and reading fic, as comforting as it is, has to be set aside as the season approaches the end, however. If Shane can't get Ilya's attention personally, he can at least throw himself back into hockey with more to prove. Ilya is almost grim out there on the ice like his life depends on it, and Shane wishes he could pick apart whatever's in his head through the TV screen, or talk to him at all.
His blood thunders as he finally gets to hold up the rookie award in Vegas, and is released into the party. Idly, he thinks about writing a fic in a party setting like this as he casts his eyes around for Ilya, maybe hooking up in the bathroom or something, but then he's pulled into shots with Scott Hunter and some of the other veterans he's looked up to and the idea of it becomes hazy in his mind, jumbled with all his other drunken thoughts and the hurt he's been trying to push down.
Seeing Ilya out on the balcony is the trigger to a ticking time bomb.
Shane doesn't know why he lets Ilya kiss him after all that before his brain finally catches up to him. Or he does, but he refuses to think about it when Ilya has essentially ghosted him for months and then started bullshit while and still tried to make a pass at him anyway. He does feel the tiniest bit bad when Ilya calls after him as he walks away, but its far overshadowed by the hurt and guilt and shame and paranoia.
And how else to process his feelings than through writing?
The more he stares at the new document, the more self-punishing he feels, for lack of better term. He's been trying to write their dynamic how it actually is, and how he and his new writer friend like it—the surprisingly gentle, thoughtful, attentive way Ilya has always guided him through sex, the sort of scared but curious way Shane is slowly opening up both sexually and emotionally. He doesn't want that in this fic. It's not the healthiest coping mechanism, and he knows there's probably some trauma and other things going on that make him feel this way, but maybe he'd feel better if Ilya pinned him down until he saw stars.
Exhaling softly, he places his hands back on the keyboard.

Come Here, Lucifer
Summary:
Shane is exactly where he wants to be—being used by Ilya without having to think anymore.
Notes:
I know I don't usually write this dynamic for them but I had some negative feelings to project I guess. I promise everything is consensual and pre-negotiated.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
"Get on your knees."
Shane thinks about fighting it, but he's already sinking to his knees in front of Ilya, his torn, tattered wings slumping to the wooden boards behind him.
"So eager to please," Ilya murmurs, pushing his claws through Shane's hair. But his fingers tighten, tugging until Shane's face tilts up toward him and the moon behind him. "You think it'll get you back into heaven, don't you?"
Shane narrows his eyes, something defiant spiking in his chest.
"Just being with you will knock me right back to hell anyway."
It’s out of his mouth before he thinks about it. Only Ilya brings out these chaotic emotions in him, makes him say these stupid things. Part of him wants to push, push until Ilya snaps or leaves him, push until Ilya inadvertently, inevitably confirms everything that whispers sinisterly at the back of his mind. Part of him wants to find out what Ilya would do if he had no other choice.
Ilya's gaze above him hardens, nothing like the softened eyes he's had recently, and there's a tiny moment of vindication, almost, like Shane had finally, inevitably driven him away. It's for the better, he supposes.
"You are not yourself," Ilya says, voice steely. His sharp canines glint in the dim light of the sole lantern on the cabin porch. He reaches down to undo his fly with one hand, forcing Shane's head toward it. "Maybe you need reminder."
Shane already knows what he's being asked to do, and his lips part instinctively, mouthing at Ilya's hardening cock through his underwear. Only when its nice and wet does Ilya roughly tug his head away again by the hair, shoving his underwear down just enough to guide the head of his cock past Shane's lips.
This, Shane can do. It's easy to let his brain fall blank and let the warm weight of Ilya's cock fill his mouth. It's an easy rhythm of his tongue and moaning as Ilya's grip tightens in his hair, and letting Ilya's cock bump against the back of his throat, more, harder until he's mostly sitting in place and Ilya fucks his throat however he likes. It's easy to turn around and let Ilya pin down his battered wings and arms, putting his full body weight into his thrusts as he fucks Shane against the wood of the porch.
Shane embraces the painful digging of the wood against his forearms. It's almosts comforting as Ilya holds his head back by the hair, the scrape of his teeth, the growl in his ear that's more wolf than human.
All he has to do is lie there and take it. No thoughts, no worries about whether he's doing it right. No judgment of heaven's court, no reminders of what he'd lost in the fall to earth.
Everything is hazy, clouded.
Perfect.

nowhere else
Summary:
Cold and alone, Ilya takes the gamble and knocks on Hollander's door.
Notes:
sometimes feel so alone, so i wrote this.
spec means supernatural ability. ilya - gravity manipulation, shane - make things from body mass
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
Ilya's head is pounding.
He is sort of aware of the bruising and swelling somewhere at the top of his head, which is not helped by the torrential downpour around him. The only light comes from the occasional flash of lightning, and a couple hazy dots in the distance that he thinks are streetlights, maybe.
Lifting his hands, he focuses on the dirt around him, scrabbling for a pebble, something, anything. When his fingers close around a rock, however, he concentrates, and nothing happens.
Panic siezes his throat. They took his spec, then, which means they took his identity. Everything.
He does not remember running, but he must have run to end up stranded here at what looks like the outskirts of the city, the wrong side of the tracks. Without his spec, he must not be enough of a threat to chase after anyway, which leaves a bitter taste at the back of his throat.
But first things first—figure out where he is, get out of rain.
Moving carefully, he starts to pick himself up from the ground. His ankle is flaring with pain, but thankfully not broken. His clothes and skin are torn, scraped, and muddy, and everything is wet. Slowly, he turns his ankle to put weight in a spot that is less painful, and limps forward, eyes set on the smudge of streetlamp.
It turns out to be a little house at the end of a gravel path, partway into the hill behind it. Something about it itches at the back of Ilya's brain, and he slowly looks for some kind of house number, a sign.
At the wooden fence, there hangs the number twenty-four.
Ilya stares at it, skin tingling. If he is right, then it must be a miracle, that he ended up here of all places in his time of need.
A miracle, or perhaps the cruelest thing possible.
His feet move on their own anyway, trudging painfully through mud and rain toward the front porch and raising his hand to knock before he can second guess it. He has never been here before, and he has never used the vague directions he was once given by the house's owner, but it had been given freely, right? It had been given to him.
A long moment passes, and another. Ilya is deciding whether he has nerve to knock again when the door swings open.
Hollander stands there, in soft pajama pants and achingly endearing furrowed brow. He does not look angry but assessing, analyzing. Perfectly understandable, given that he's a hero and could very well arrest Ilya.
But this is a gamble he's taking.
"I… hoped it was the right place," Ilya murmurs. "I didn't know where else to go."
Hollander frowns deeper, and opens the door a little wider, stepping aside. He is still looking over Ilya as he shuffles through the entryway, dripping onto rug in entrance hallway.
"Sorry, everything is wet," Ilya continues, starting to shiver when his body catches up. "And mud."
Hollander shakes his head slowly. He reaches out to brush the backs of his knuckles against a larger cut on Ilya's arm.
"Who did this to you?"
His voice is soft but steely. Ilya blinks as Hollander looks up at him, focus only on him. Ilya has only seen that kind of intensity when he is in suit, keeping civilians safe and messing with Ilya's plans if needed. Never in this setting, never for him beyond the public persona.
"You know who," Ilya offers, truthful but flat. Corrupt seeds are sown into the system from the roots, and both of them know it.
Hollander's fingers tighten, and then he presses his right hand to left forearm, skin starting to glow softly.
"You don't need to do that—"
"I do," Hollander says. He is already pressing the towel he pulled from his skin to Ilya's chest. "Take that, go shower—carefully—and then come back. We'll talk."
Ilya sees no more reason to argue. He nods and drapes the towel around his neck, turns toward the hall past dining area to find bathroom, but feels the tug of fingers closing around his wrist.
He looks back, and Hollander is frowning. Ilya knows that face. He is thinking and overthinking, and deciding whether he should say what he wants to.
"I'm glad you came here," is what he says finally.
Ilya shifts his hand to squeeze back.
"Me too."

Ilya pauses after leaving kudos on EscapistNerd's latest fic. In their author's notes, they'd mentioned having some negative feelings to project, and Ilya had posted around the same time with similar intention. As with most internet friends, he's rather attached to them despite not knowing what they look or sound like, and clearly they've been following and retaining sanity through each others' fics, so it might be nice to let them know he's there for them while they're in a similar boat.

hey, very good very hot fic as always and just here to say i am here for you
do you want to talk on twitter? same username
Only after he's sent it does he realize he's been talking to EscapistNerd through AO3 comments exclusively for over a year, which is strange given that he vastly prefers instant messaging. He supposes there's a certain romanticism in what feels more like handwritten notes than online comments sometimes. Oh, well. At least he's fixed that problem now.
It's much later that evening that he gets a follow notification, and then a direct message.

Ilya waits for another message, but none is forthcoming. Glancing up at the time, he realizes it's past midnight, and he's pretty sure they're in the same timezone from their AO3 timestamps, so they might have just fallen asleep.
He doesn't know why he does it, but he whispers a goodnight before turning off his phone.
Shane is still trying not to be swayed by Ilya's texts, but it's hard.
He can't let go entirely, so he tries to be more blasé, or pretend even the blatant flirting and sexual innuendos aren't getting through. He's supposed to be mad at Ilya, dammit. Ilya knows they have to be careful, and he'd clearly been struggling too much with his own issues to be with Shane after the awards in a healthy way.
But the problem is, he's starting to understand. It's only bits and pieces, but he remembers the stone cold look on Ilya's face when Shane had suggested going home to Russia for the summer might be good. He remembers Ilya's familiarity with panic attacks. Something about his father, never a mention of his mother. How he'd kissed Shane on the balcony almost like it was the only thing he felt he could do to make Shane stay.
Maybe Ilya's like him, searching for someone who will accept him as he is. Maybe they can be that for each other.
It's a scary thought, one that he keeps pushing down. He's still reconciling his queerness, and adding whatever they are to the mix is overwhelming. So he compartmentalizes—he can read Ilya's texts and admonish him for dick pics he secretly enjoys, but at a distance for now. He can let them pass like ships in the night, and it's surprisingly easy given their crazy schedules. A part of his heart hurts about it nearly constantly, but he's just trying to protect himself and take it one step at a time.
His writing gets less masochistic, at least. Over the next year or so, his fic versions of Hollanov take on more of a yearning quality. He writes fictional situations in which they only have time for a quick passing hookup, video call sex where they're on the road, anything to feel like Ilya's missing him, too.
At user unrivaled (starfragments)'s suggestion, he also works up the courage to post the links to his fics on his fandom Twitter. It's sort of nice to connect with people who've read his fics and see a few fandom staples on his timeline, and no one treats him like a big hockey star, just a fellow fan, a normal person.
He and starfragments—who he's just started calling Star—started to share ideas with each other in their DMs, which has devolved into every AU, OTP prompt, and sexual situation imaginable. It's kind of crazy what he feels he can build with someone who feels anonymously safe. Shane had thought it would be weirder, but anything they come up with together is like playing dolls in a way, just them forever expanding on their shared imagination. So even if he has some personal investment, there's a layer of separation that he's grateful for.
Today, they're playing with a genderbent alternate universe. It's always nice because Shane is excited about their back and forth and looking forward to new messages; their little fic-related threads are always an oasis in his otherwise chaotic life.

Looking up at the time, Shane blinks. It's already been three hours of them going back and forth, and he really has to get to bed if he wants to make practice the next day. But it's nice, having something to stave off the loneliness at the back of his brain and his conflict about Ilya. He's grateful. Maybe he'll write Star a gift sometime.
But he can't completely ignore the Ilya Problem though, as he's taken to calling it in his head. Ilya is persistent at texting him for months, years, trying to get any rise or reaction out of him, any sembleance of what they had. And try as he might, Shane can't stop responding, as stilted and cold as he tries to seem. He can't completely shut out someone who shares his secret, and who's been the gateway to a whole new world despite his denial.
So he's mad at himself, for trying to type out two different messages rejecting Ilya's pre-game sexting and then, eventually, slowly, responding. And Ilya probably knows it too, the bastard. He knows exactly what buttons to push so that Shane will respond even in public, even in the middle of all his teammates, and Shane should be so much more angry because this is exactly the same problem as after the rookie award. It's dangerous to get so high on the danger of it all, and Ilya is the most dangerous part.
But seeing Ilya meet him at the back door to his apartment building after the game, a lot of that gets buried under how much he's missed Ilya. Even the last dredges of ire he summons to shove Ilya against the wall and demand answers dissipates as Ilya correctly and cockily assumes he'd been hard, too.
"You missed me, didn't you?"
Shane doesn't look at him as he denies it.
He can't even bring himself to do anything but look at Ilya longingly in the kitchen as he attempts to hold a conversation. Ilya doesn't wait anyway, giving in to kiss him first, and Shane lets him. He smiles stupidly as Ilya teases him about too many pillows on the bed, and can't fight down a bigger, more stupid smile as Ilya tells him he knows Shane likes him being an asshole.
And oh, hell. They're drawn to each other like magnets, and Shane gives in, gives up. Ilya kisses him with all the same want Shane's been holding back for years now, and Shane is tired of pretending he doesn't want him just as desperately. For all the smut he's written, it's so much more intense and electric to feel it all in person—the chemistry, Ilya's soft check-ins, the physical feeling of Ilya's cock finally, finally inside Shane for the first time. He almost wishes he could capture every detail in words, vivid enough to relive and for a reader to absorb.
It's almost, almost, enough for him to forget the denial. The afterglow is so warm and hazy that Shane could almost think this was real without panicking. But Ilya asks him whether it was worth the wait and he can't bring himself to respond, hoping a kiss is enough.
Ilya's shift in mood feels off, but at least he gives Shane a parting kiss that's much too sweet for what they are.
Shane lies in bed staring at the ceiling long after Ilya leaves, just trying to savor every lingering feeling. His fingers itch. It's much too late, but he's not sure how much of every vivid detail and sensation and touch he'll remember in the morning, so really he only has now to capture the sensations in words.
Rolling out of bed, he goes to find his laptop and glasses, determined to pocket this for a rainy day reread.

To Have and To Hold
Summary:
This time, Ilya's touch is so tender, too tender. This time, the label of marriage feels more real.
Notes:
Happy new year, everyone. Took a while to finish this because I really wanted to get the details right, sort of capturing an in-between space, more than friends but not quite lovers. Hope you enjoy.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
The kiss is tender.
It's not the first time they've had sex. Far from it. But Shane doesn't think he would have used that word to describe Ilya in bed before. Attentive, yes. Caring, yes. Passionate, of course. But the slow, intentional way Ilya presses his lips to Shane's as he leans over him between his legs is definitely tender, long-burning embers rather than a short-lived flame.
It's hotter, somehow. More intimate. The way Ilya's lips catch on his as he slowly pulls away, the way his eyes cast over every inch of Shane's face. Shane is flushed from the attention, nearly squirming amongst the lavish pillows even though Ilya has barely touched him yet.
"We should use our bed more," Ilya says, leaning down to press an openmouthed kiss into Shane's neck.
Their bed. Shane doesn't think he's heard Ilya refer to it that way before. They've slept in the same bed after the marriage for appearances' sake, but it's Ilya's lavish quarters that Shane now occupies as well, Ilya's luxurious bed that he's generously allowed Shane into. It's probably part of the reason that Shane has avoided having sex in this bed, like he'd subconsciously want to ask for permission or something. They've stolen whatever they can in various parts of the palace grounds—the stables, the gazebo at the far end of the north gardens, the giant bath adjacent to Ilya's quarters—but never…
Shane probably shouldn't think about it too hard.
"Won't your servants be mad if we keep getting the sheets dirty?"
Ilya laughs, and Shane feels the shake of his chest against his own. "Is what they are paid for." He leans in for another kiss, like he can't help it.
Shane supposes that's true. He lets Ilya distract him from the thought with more kisses to his jaw, his neck, his collarbones. Ilya is unhurried, trailing kisses over every inch he can, his lips and tongue searing against Shane's skin. Ilya can no doubt feel Shane's cock hardening against his stomach, because he doesn't look down as he reaches for it, confidently grasping at the base and stroking upward. Shane can feel the imprint of Ilya's grin against his chest as he strokes again, still that steady slow rhythm.
"So you did miss me," Ilya teases, lifting his head to kiss the corner of Shane's mouth. His face looks softer in the sunlight filtering in through the curtains around the bed.
"You were gone—ah—only a week."
"But no denial."
Shane attempts a glare at his smirk, but it breaks with a gasp as Ilya rubs his thumb over the head. Ilya takes Shane clutching his shoulders as invitation to slide his hand lower, fingers circling until Shane relaxes the muscles there and he can push a finger in.
"You're always so tense there, I have to wait." Ilya doesn't look put out by this at all, just thoughtful and maybe a little amused.
Shane has a fleeting thought about when Ilya had started to notice patterns like that, but it's easier to ignore it in favor of moaning as Ilya stretches him open. He's still unhurried, chuckling as Shane squirms and rocks into his fingers, but thankfully he doesn't tease too long, and kisses Shane through every step.
He's facing Shane as he finally nudges his cock against him, watching his expression as he slides it in. Shane has been so impatient that he watches it go in, and his eyes roll back with his sigh of relief.
"Finally," he says, to avoid looking at Ilya. "Took forever."
When no snarky comment is forthcoming, however, he looks back at Ilya's face. His eyes have softened at the corners as he looks at Shane, and he's quiet as he lets Shane adjust. If Shane had to place the expression, it's fond, but that doesn't feel right. Ilya is looking at him like he's something precious, something to commit every detail to memory.
Like Shane is his husband by love, not political arrangement.
Shane feels even more naked.
"I'm ready," he tries, to remind Ilya of where they are.
Thankfully, Ilya takes the hint, dragging his cock out before burying it back in to the hilt. It's much easier for Shane to lose himself moaning Ilya's name than deal with whatever those looks are. Feeling the drag of Ilya's cock is a physical sensation he can grasp onto, lose himself in; feeling the slow-burning heat of Ilya's gaze is not.
Does he deserve to be the center of Ilya's attention? Probably not. Is he going to tuck every moment of it close to his chest? Yes.
Husbands. The label doesn't feel quite so far off when Ilya looks at him like that.
Shane will greedily take whatever he can get.

I didn't mean for it to be angsty, but it sort of ended up that way I guess? Please leave a comment if you enjoyed.

The loss is devastating.
Ilya stares at the ice, already hearing the scathing words of his father in his head.
You're a disgrace.
How could you lose?
How dare you show your face in front of me after that.
His head is pounding. He feels dizzy, and like every blood cell in his body will burst out of his skin. He'd give in to angry tears but he doesn't know how.
Numb. He's just numb.
It's not technically his fault. Sports are brutal and unpredictable. But his father won't want to hear that, his brother would laugh at his excuses. He's absorbed so much of their vitriol that he's turned it upon himself more harshly than they ever could.
To be less than perfect is to be a failure.
He doesn't remember getting off the ice or changing out of his gear. No one asks him for a speech, and he's vaguely grateful, just grabbing his bag and leaving. He ignores Svetlana's texts and texts from a couple other friends and teammates, and he sure as hell ignores Shane's text, finally turning off his phone completely.
He knows what will happen, even if he hates it. His brain will spiral, he'll isolate, he'll shut down and close himself into his tiny little mental cage where even if it's not healthy, it's familiar. He goes to the men's figure skating singles later in the day in a feeble attempt to stave off the brain fog, but he doesn't sit down, just chooses a secluded hallway overlooking the rink and presses his temple against the coolness of a metal support beam.
Shane, of course, still approaches him.
He can feel how hurt and taken aback Shane is without even looking at him, when he assumes Shane is just here to hook up. Even the vague guilt in his chest at Shane pushing past that to ask if he's okay isn't enough to shut down the trauma responses he knows he's going to regret as Shane walks away.
It doesn't help to see his father before the gala, who berates him for losing and making excuses and "not living up to his potential." Ilya fogs his way through the song and dance of deference and being the perfect but never good enough son and reminding his father that his mother is, in fact, dead.
God, he hates being here.
Svetlana is his only saving grace, even if she pushes Sasha onto him unknowingly. Ilya is surprised by how little he feels for Sasha anymore, and there's the niggling thought at the back of his mind that he knows exactly why but he's too tired to unpack it. He's sort of disappointed when Svetlana leaves, because her familiarity and sharp mind are the only things tethering him to reality right now. The fog is so heavy, heavy, settling over his brain and numbing even the faint interest in having sex to cope.
He's so tired, and Sasha is the farthest thing from helpful.
He's so tired, and he can't accept anything good, even Shane's probing text that signals he still cares.
Is he doing okay? No, and he doesn't have the energy to explain the passively suicidal fog that takes over his brain—sinking, sinking into familiar quagmire again.
Sometimes, it feels like he'll never get better.

silent cry
Summary:
Shane is patient even on Ilya's bad days.
Notes:
you don't need to read this, just coping.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
The water is lukewarm around him.
It should probably be concerning how much energy it feels like to form that singular thought. Everything around him is hazy and sluggish, the world passed through a filter before it gets to him. He sort of registers the smooth resin feel of the bathtub. He sort of feels the pruning of his fingers that he should do something about, maybe.
Exhaling, he rests his temple against the lip of the tub.
It's easier to sit here. Less energy. He'll probably be called to dinner soon, and then he can think about getting up.
Shane does so much for him. He wouldn't be eating without Shane there, or register the time at all. He'd probably let himself sink into the bathwater completely if he wouldn't scare Shane half to death.
Slow. Everything is slow.
It's Tuesday, he thinks. Or Wednesday? He doesn't know. He's called out of work so often recently that the days are blurring together. It's all the same thing, anyway. Get up, try to eat, leave half of it in the refrigerator, attempt some sort of passive activity, sleep, get up again.
Maybe it would be better to leave it all behind. It's all so pointless. He's useless like this, anyway. He's just a burden to Shane and both of them know it no matter how much Shane says otherwise. Without him, Shane could move on to better things.
Not for the first time today, tears begin to sting at the corners of his eyes, but they don't fall.
He doesn't even have the energy to cry. Pathetic.
Somewhere beyond the door, there's footsteps, and then the door opens to Shane peeking around it.
"Hey," he says, and his voice is so soft, caring in a way that Ilya doesn't deserve. "Ready to eat?"
Ilya blinks and looks up at him, trying to will himself to form words.
When he doesn't respond, Shane steps fully into the bathroom, pulling over the stool in the corner to sit by the tub.
"What are you thinking about, love?"
Ilya frowns, the fog whispering at him again. Give up, it says. You don't deserve this kindness. You don't deserve him.
He could be honest, he supposes. Shane has been here through all of his bad days and he's still here. He deserves an answer.
"Thought about… what if I just put my head under water."
Shane looks so sad at that. He reaches out to pet Ilya's hair gently, and Ilya can hear the way his voice is careful not to tremble when he speaks again. "Are you planning to?"
Ilya can feel the fog shifting, not quite clear, but relaxing momentarily with the comforting touch, at least. "No," he says after a moment. Even if it doesn't fully internalize right now, there are things like this that are nice, that he doesn't want to let go of.
The smallest smile on Shane's face, a little hopeful.
"That's good," he says gently. "I'm glad."
He presses a kiss to Ilya's forehead for a moment, but he doesn't force more conversation immediately, just sits there continuing to stroke Ilya's hair.
"I made dinner, and I'd love for you to eat some, if you're up for it," he says after a couple minutes. "No forcing, of course."
Ilya nods. Dinner is something he can focus on, at least. Even if he doesn't end up eating, it's an excuse to get up.
"Would you like any help?" Shane asks, looking around for the change of clothes he'd set out before.
Slowly, Ilya nods again. He doesn't really care about appearances right now. If Shane wants to help him, he'll take any help he can get.
It seems helpful for Shane too, that he can do something concrete. He holds Ilya's hand as he gets out of the tub, and wraps a towel around him to gently dry him off, and adjusts his shirt and sweatpants around him. He even gives Ilya another kiss, on his cheek.
Something faintly stirs in Ilya's chest. Gratitude. It's the most he's felt anything all day.
"Thank you," he makes himself say.
Shane does smile at that, a slightly bigger one. He knows how much more there is behind the simple phrase.
"Of course," he says, taking Ilya's hand. "I love you."
It doesn't cure him, of course. But it does remind him that there are some things to live for.
Notes:

Still nothing.
Shane has cycled through being worried, scared, angry, and trying to convince himself he doesn't care at least a dozen times. But it's been months, and there's still no response from Ilya.
Maybe he should give up. Maybe the persistent anxiety that tells him Ilya never really cared about him at all is right, and he was stupid to ever think otherwise.
Even distracting himself isn't working. He keeps being unable to focus on writing, and then gets more frustrated with himself, and user unrivaled (starfragments) seems to have gone radio silent as well.
Really reinforces that he's easy to leave, huh.
When he gets a notification in his inbox of a new posted work, however, there's a faint rush of hope that he tries to tamp down. As he skims the tags, however, he frowns more and more, and the worry sets into his chest.
The fic is just… sad. Weary. Shane feels so heavy reading it, like he's taking on the sluggish haze of depression that the author is feeling. With the minimal notes and summary as well…
Suddenly, he feels sort of bad for being annoyed about not being responded to. His fingers hover over the empty comment box. Star had mentioned that they wouldn't respond to comments, but maybe he can still say something nice and encouraging.

Hey, Star. I know you've been pretty quiet online, and I've been wondering how you were doing. It's good to see you're still around, but you don't have to respond to this. I just hope you're taking care of yourself, or with people that will take care of you. Missing our idea threads and inviting you to come back to them if you ever feel up for it again. Here for you otherwise, too. Take care.
Hopefully that's enough. He's always struggled with the right words to say, but he's hoping that the reminder that someone cares about him who might be removed from whatever he's experiencing is helpful. This is all he can do from this side.
A reply only comes a week later.
unrivaled (starfragments) Sun 23 Mar 2014 06:09PM EDT
thank you. doing terrible but wanted to respond to you. i don't know when i will be back, or if i will be back, but i think about you a lot. i'm sorry.
Shane attempts a response along the lines of not expecting an apology and leaving the door open, but there is a little hole in his heart next to the larger, looming one of Ilya's absence. It's almost like everyone who knows intimate things about him are leaving at once, but he's just going to have to keep himself together.
Star doesn't respond again.
Worse, Shane gets word from his mother that he'll be hosting the MLH awards in Vegas with none other than Ilya himself. He's not sure what to think. He's sort of numbly watched as Ilya has thrown himself back into hockey with a vengeance, but only through a TV screen. He'd felt frustrated enough to blink back tears as he'd watched Boston win the cup with his team, and now he's expected to be civil on stage with him in front of hundreds of people?
But he can't say no, either, both because of expectations and because it's the only chance he'll get to guarantee being in the same vicinity as Ilya again.
It feels kind of sickening to see Ilya treat him like nothing has happened, the same smiley joking front and playing up their dynamic for the cameras. It's with a mixture of shame, guilt, and anger that Shane swallows everything down forcibly until he can run to the farthest bathroom possible and finally exhale when he's checked he's alone.
Of course, Ilya is still persistent.
He has the gall to laugh as Shane stares at him, and Shane sort of knows he acts all cocky to hide everything else, and probably thinks that if he acts like everything is fine, Shane will, too. And fuck him—of course he gives in when Ilya grabs his chin like that, and no amount of frowning can hide that he's missed him more than he's angry at him.
He thinks that maybe things can shift slowly back to what they were, but Ilya still has whatever carefully built walls he's put up around himself as he orders Shane to take off his clothes, and touch himself. It feels so wrong to not have Ilya's careful check-ins and touching him all over so reverently, but if this is what Ilya thinks he wants in the moment, he can't bring himself to say anything.
He does tell him he needs him, and even that is met by a vague hum of acknowledgement. Shane feels sick. He lets Shane suck him off, and fucks him into the mattress, but it's not him, it's not right. Shane feels sicker.
Even sitting together afterward is terrible. Ilya barely touches him, and pulls out a cigarette again that Shane hasn't seen in a while.
Maybe he can ask. He knows all this started with the Olympics loss, and he can still hear JJ talking about how terrible it is to be queer in Russia.
"Are you going back?"
Ilya doesn't look at him as he says yes.
"Do you have to?"
Ilya's tone hardens as he asks for clarification, and he says that it's home so matter-of-factly, like he doesn't have a choice. Shane's heart sinks further. Only when he asks whether it's safe and if Ilya likes it there does Ilya turn his head, and his eyes are so flat, dull.
"What difference does it make?"
It's the most truthful he's been this whole night.
The cracks in Shane's heart widen, shattering. He wants to do something, anything, to reach across the divide. He wants Ilya to be safe, and away from whatever's making him go into survival mode.
"A pretty big one, I think."
But Ilya isn't more forthcoming than that. He sends Shane off without even moving from the bed or seeing him to the door, and Shane feels even sicker.
In the elevator, he types and retypes different messages, each draft feeling worse than the last.
We didn't even kiss—
"Fuck," he says, deleting everything and putting his phone away.
The welcome coolness of the elevator door is his only saving grace.

Put On A Show
Summary:
Even if Ilya is cold to him, Shane will obey. The customer is always right, after all.
Notes:
Sort of been sitting with this one for a while. I wasn't sure I was writing it how it was in my head since I didn't feel great at the time (it's better now, don't worry). Just wanted to write something where Shane wants a little more intimacy.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
Shane knows from Ilya's face that today will be different.
His face is slightly fuzzy around the edges through the computer screen as always, but his expressions are so clear to Shane, who's always had to overcompensate for people telling him he has none. So this time, with Ilya's carefully undreadable poker face… Shane fights the urge to frown.
Ilya's watching him, slouching in that familiar armchair with his legs manspread and eyes raking over the harness and lingerie set Shane had selected for their private call. Ilya's a paying customer, after all, so he makes an effort even if he doesn't much like the feeling of lace on his skin. Suddenly, he wonders if it's too much, or not something Ilya likes, even though he'd studied their past calls and Ilya's intake forms extensively to make an informed choice.
He's overthinking.
"What would you like to do today?" he ventures, trying to dispel his thoughts.
Ilya considers him a moment longer, then reaches off screen for a bottle, taking a swig from it.
"You've fingered yourself before, right."
Shane isn't quite sure he likes the flat inflection of the question, but he nods.
"And you have toys. A dildo, at least."
Shane nods again. Ilya takes another sip.
"Get them out, then."
Shane complies and reaches for his box next to the bed, ignoring the slightly sinking feeling in his chest. "Which one would you like?" he asks, holding up a few different ones in his hands.
Still that slow consideration, almost as if Ilya is bored. "Left."
The leftmost dildo is the most realistic of the three he'd held up, and Shane tucks away that observation for later contemplation, setting the others aside.
"Turn around," Ilya commands before he can ask. "Face down, I want to see you use your fingers first."
That, Shane can do, and at least he won't have to watch Ilya's expression. He shuffles around to face the headboard, keeping the slide smooth as he pushes his face into the bed, ass up in a way he's practiced to look good on camera. Thankfully, Ilya can't see his little smile to himself as he hears the sharp intake of breath. Ilya doesn't need to know he's his favorite client that he'd worked on it for, though he's fairly sure Ilya has come to that conclusion himself, with how many things Shane ends up doing for him that he doesn't have anywhere else in his terms of service.
He feels a little proud that it worked as he hears the tension in Ilya's voice, slight strain like he's holding back. "Good boy… No need to take the panties off, you can reach past it, can't you?"
"Yes…" His voice trails off into a soft moan as he registers the praise.
Shane can only imagine what he looks like to Ilya, the tops of his knee-high sheer stockings tight around his thighs and the thin strap of the bottom of the panties barely hiding anything. He's deliberately slow, squeezing lube over his fingers before he reaches behind him to run his fingers along the skin next to the slim fabric. Ilya says nothing as he watches, so Shane is left to hope that he's staring with rapt attention no matter how casual he appears.
Given how much he's done this, he can slide aside the panties and fit two fingers with ease. It takes longer to work himself up to three, and he makes sure to squeeze more lube directly onto his fingers, knowing it must look more obscene with it soaking into the lingerie and past his wrist. Focusing on the task takes his mind off of whether Ilya is enjoying it or not, just working himself up until he's moaning half into the sheets. He's just starting to feel enough pleasure building when—
"Stop."
Shane can't help the whine that escapes him, but he obeys, blinking his eyes out of their haze. Slowly, he lifts his head just enough to look over his shoulder, sure that Ilya can see the flush in his cheeks and tears gathering at the corners of his eyes.
Ilya sucks in a breath through his teeth. Turning to the side, he sets down his glass in favor of reaching down, unbuttoning his pants at the bottom edge of the video frame.
"The dildo now," he says, with a long stroke over himself. "You're close, you can pretend it's me."
Shane trembles slightly as he sits up to pour lube over it. He's turned half toward the camera so that Ilya can see his hands working over the toy for a moment, and then presses his face back down to insert the toy into himself. Ilya had chosen well—this one has enough texture and ridges to feel almost like the real thing; it's much easier to imagine that Ilya himself had sunk into him to the hilt.
"Ilya… please…"
"Please what?" Shane can't see him anymore, but his voice is softer and closer, like he's leaning into the camera. Shane wishes his voice were right by his ear, but if he closes his eyes…
"Your cock… please, I want…"
Ilya hums in acknowledgement. "Go on, then, pretty boy. Let me fuck you until you can't think straight."
Shane needs no further encouragement. He thrusts with the toy and grabs his own cock, trying to bring himself back to former arousal. Ilya murmurs more encouragement, and more details for him to think about—like the grip of his fingers on Shane's waist, like him kissing and biting at his neck—that make him moan louder and rock back into it, finesse be damned as he chases orgasm.
When he finally comes, it's with Ilya's name raggedly tearing itself from his mouth, and come squirting over the sheets beneath him. He slumps a little, letting his body weight go and his hand fall, the dildo still inside him just in case until he can hear Ilya cursing as he comes as well.
"So eager to please," Ilya pants, breath slowing. "Sit up for me."
At least it's a little softer than his previous tone. Shane lets the toy slip free and sets it aside on the sheets he's going to have to wash anyway, sitting up to face Ilya at last.
"Feel good?" Ilya asks.
Happy to be asked, Shane nods. "Was that what you wanted?"
"Yes." The beginnings of a smile at the edges of his mouth. "You did so well, Shane. Make sure you shower and eat something, hm?"
Shane will take it, for now. He wants to ask if he'll see Ilya in person soon, but he's not sure whether the spell would be broken. For now, he nods, bids him a quiet goodbye, and stares at the blank screen for a minute or two before looking up at the time, just like every session.
It's far from the first time he's let Ilya run over, and Shane is sure it won't be the last.

He'd never really thought about written porn as masturbation material until EscapistNerd's fics started getting him too hard to ignore, but he supposes that the extra immersion of seeing "himself" do these things in fic and imagining doing them with the real Shane is extra enticement.
The fic also reminds him of their time after the awards this summer. He does still feel slightly bad for that time… It's not what he wants to do, be cold to Shane when they both really crave emotional intimacy. He's fairly sure he'd guessed correctly that Shane did enjoy showing off for him, but he'd had no idea how to reach out past his depression and trauma making him build up walls and isolation other than sex, and he'd been too burnt out at the time to perform. It had been the only middle ground he could come up with.
Sighing, he wipes his hands on his sweats and picks up his phone. There's a message from EscapistNerd themself, sending him the promotional post they'd made on Twitter. Smiling, he types out a reply.

Ilya stares at the ceiling longer after their conversation, just thinking.
He can picture Shane's voice in his head, the way he'd forced out the words I need you. His eyes, searching like he'd been trying to reach Ilya from the other side of the glass.
Shane, who probably deserves more than Ilya has given him.
EscapistNerd is right, he should be honest. It'll take some working up to it, but maybe he'll make it a point to ask whether they can talk on the phone sometime soon, even if not in person. The season is starting up again soon, and he doesn't want to get back into it without clearing the air a little.
He types and retypes a message about it, and finally sends it the next weekend, keeping it short. Shane seems a little surprised, but he says he'll make time the next evening to talk.
"Hey," Shane says when he picks up. His voice sounds strange through the phone speaker. Ilya doesn't like this; he'd rather be talking to Shane in person.
"Hi." Ilya pauses, unsure how to approach it. "Thanks for calling."
"Are you okay? You're being weirdly polite."
Of course that's Shane's natural response. Ilya smiles to himself before he responds. "Yes, shut up for a moment. I was going to ask if we are good. I think… Vegas was not what you wanted. Not completely."
Shane draws in a breath that Ilya can hear over the line. "Oh… was I that obvious?"
Ilya blinks. "Well, I think maybe I notice things about you that most people don't, so maybe obvious, maybe not."
"Right." Shane pauses, and Ilya can just about imagine his thinking face. "Well, you didn't really do much wrong. Other than ghosting me beforehand."
"I am sorry. I'm not ready to talk about it, but… bad things happened after the Olympics. Depression came back, which does not make me the nicest person."
Shane hums in understanding. "I figured, but it does hurt to not understand why I'm being shut out."
Ilya tilts his face up toward the ceiling and exhales. "I know. I cannot promise it won't happen again but… I will try harder."
"Glad to hear it."
There's a natural pause, and Ilya waits to see if he has anything else to say before he asks, "So after our first game next month…"
Shane laughs. "Yeah, yeah, okay. Text me."
Ilya's chest feels so much lighter than it has in months.
Their first time hooking up in the fall season is just them falling into each other, giggling and breathless, and Ilya is so relieved. It's like they're craving each other with the reconnection, as if Ilya didn't miss him more and more in the long stretches they're apart. More than the sex, it's addicting to crave someone who clearly craves him right back; he never has to question whether Shane wants to be there with him. He isn't even mad as he watches Shane lead the Metros to win the championship two years in a row, because everything is good, and he has a second chance.
The summer of 2016 while he's back home is more bearable now that they've continued whatever this is with just the two of them, but it's also strange. He finds himself ignoring women and drinking to await Shane's next text, skips out on more social things to be available for Shane to call him.
Svetlana is onto him, of course. She's too smart for her own good, but at least she still thinks "Jane" is a woman even though she knows about his sexuality. Ilya wants to tell himself that his thing with Shane isn't serious, but he could just about imagine the unimpressed look on her face if she knew.
Only in the privacy of his own head does he admit that he wishes Shane were his, entirely, for good. If he were to say it aloud, the dream would shatter.
The day of the tuna melt sneaks up on him.
For once, Shane visits his place in Boston, and after Shane rides him much too well, he feels the overwhelming urge to ask him to stay in the sleepy afterglow.
"Stay?" he asks, like it's a foreign concept.
It takes more wheedling and well-placed kisses for Shane to give in, but he does, and Ilya finally, finally, gets to wake up with Shane in his arms, as it should be every day.
Heaven. He's addicted all over again.
He'd even stocked Shane's silly ginger ale and plays off making him food casually, but he catches the soft smiles Shane unknowingly breaks into, and his heart… it will burst, at this rate.
Shane's softness makes him want to push, a little. Just probe at how Shane will react if he talks about women, that sort of thing. But for all Shane doesn't talk about himself much, Ilya can read a lot in his face and actions—like the relief in his voice when Ilya insinuates he's not trying to find anyone else right now.
Ilya is sure Shane's dopey smile is just a mirror of his own.
He thinks he's making headway in starting to introduce his feelings about Shane when, just as always, his father calls at the worst time. When he returns, though, Shane just asks gently about his father, and then gently touches him as Ilya draws him in to cuddle, fingers drifting up Ilya's thigh.
Wait.
Ilya can hardly believe it as Shane settles into his lap so easily, and Ilya doesn't resist him shoving down their pants just enough to grasp both of their cocks together. Shane kissing him all over as he works feels like taking care of Ilya, and Ilya doesn't know if he's ever received this much tenderness from anyone.
It's only natural to use Shane's given name as he comes, like he has been in his head for months, years even.
But even after Shane uses his, he backs away.
Shane stands up from the couch in such a hurry, and keeps repeating that he's sorry, that he can't do this. Ilya is still processing the sudden shift from such a vulnerable moment, so at first, he can't understand what Shane is going on about. He's only gathering the beginnings of what's in Shane's head before Shane bolts like a panicked animal.
And very soon, sooner than he expects, his teammates tell him about Rose Landry.

just another what if
Summary:
Svetlana sees Rose with a new boyfriend, and starts to see red.
Notes:
i don't know.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
As one of the wedding party, Rose has a fully clear view of Rose sitting in the fourth or fifth row, holding onto her new boyfriend's arm.
She should be focused on Ilya and his big day, but she can't ignore the sick, twisted feeling in her stomach. She can't stop looking at the two of them every so often, and it feels worse to see Rose dressed up so pretty and not be the one whose arm she's clinging to.
Not that Rose would have ever brought her to something like this so publicly.
They were never anything, really. It didn't mean anything that Svetlana had been Rose's first time with a woman, or that Rose had told Svetlana explicitly that she'd never been with a man and had the same level of satisfaction. It doesn't matter that Svetlana knows her so intimately after years of hooking up and will take her secret to the grave if she has to. The moment they'd started talking about anything that involved commitment, Rose had bolted.
And now Svetlana has to stare at her from across the open bar, and notice more things about her that she's sure no one else does. It's so clear to her that Rose avoids looking at her boyfriend directly, instead laughing or taking shots and keeping the grooms close by. She doesn't respond when he touches her, and quickly finds a way to slip out of his grasp when he puts his hand around her waist.
It makes Svetlana angry, honestly.
She goes to take another sip, and discovers its the last one in her glass. The burn isn't strong enough as it slides down her throat, but she's vaguely aware that she should probably pace herself. Glaring at the empty glass, she slides it across the bartop before stalking off to find the bathroom.
At the very least, the walk through the garden to the house and the quiet as she closes the door behind her is helpful. The knot of anger is still there, but its smaller in her chest with deliberate breaths. She's probably got some time before Ilya or someone comes looking for her, so she keeps her pace slow, washes her hands a second time. Part of her wishes she could splash water on her face, but she's wearing makeup and is obligated to keep up appearances. Ugh.
The universe doesn't even allow her the peace for enough time, because Rose walks in after a couple minutes.
Svetlana tenses, but keeps her head down as she finishes scrubbing her hands, and turns toward the dryer. Maybe Rose won't acknowledge her if she moves fast enough.
"Hey," Rose says, not even heading toward a stall. Her voice is a little sluggish, but she doesn't seem more than tipsy, at least. "Where have you been? I'd been hoping to see you at the party."
"Me," Svetlana repeats, deadpan. "You've been hoping to see me."
Rose nods. "You did such a great job with planning, everything looks great and went so smoothly and Shane was really grateful for your help—"
"Are you fucking serious?"
Rose blinks, with the audacity to look taken aback. "Yes? What do you mean?"
Svetlana cannot believe this. "You're talking directly to me without acknowledging fucking running away?"
"I didn't… I mean, sure, I stepped back, but we weren't even dating."
The edges of Svetlana's vision are starting to turn red. She's definitely not drunk enough for this. She takes a step toward Rose, and another, closer until Rose's back hits the short wall on the other side of the sinks, until Svetlana's nose is brushing hers, breaths mingling.
"I don't know what you're playing at, but if you're going to tell me you let me fuck you over and over for years in secret and then throw me away the second things got real, I hope you meet every single fucking consequence of your actions." The growl rises in her throat even as Rose's eyes widen, not in fear but with sadness, guilt; she can't be swayed now. "Is your pretend boyfriend really worth it, Landry? I dare you to tell me you'd prefer him over me, even if we 'never dated'."
Roses's mouth opens, then closes. Svetlana's eyes narrow further.
"That's what I thought."
Clenching her fists, she steps away. "I can't pretend to know whatever battles you're fighting in your head because you never tell me, but I can guess." Taking a deep breath, she exhales slowly, trying to loosen the knot in her chest again even though it's tighter, angrier. "Whatever. Not my problem anymore. Have fun pretending your whole life."
Without waiting for Rose's reply, she storms out the door, already pulling her phone out and blinking back angry tears.
Going home, she texts Ilya, and turns toward the exit instead of back to the party.

Sorry, this work doesn't allow comments.
Shane doesn't know how to feel about this fic.
He'd technically done the same, right? He'd left Ilya behind (he can admit that in the safety of his own head). He isn't even sure he should be writing or reading Hollanov fic when he's in this new relationship, so he hasn't really been engaging with fandom as much, mostly just sporadically keeping up his conversations with Star.
He wonders if Star had written this after seeing the news about him and Rose. Some fans get weird and parasocial like that, as though they can dictate celebrities' lives, but this fic doesn't really feel like that. It's more like Star had used the situation to vent some personal feelings. He can understand why they'd turned off comments for the fic, but he's not sure whether to reach out either. Maybe Star would be receptive and talk to him about it if they're already messaging each other. Maybe.

There isn't any reply after that, and Shane is left to stew even more in his own thoughts. If he were in Star's position—if he were in Ilya's position—what would he think?
The guilt gnaws at his insides, only growing.
He tries to spend more time with Rose to make up for it, like he's trying to convince himself he'd made the right choice, but it's futile. He likes Rose well enough, but there isn't that same spark, or excitement and anticipation. There's just dread, and it really isn't her fault.
So maybe he shouldn't be so surprised by their talk in the restaurant. Rose clearly knew what he'd been trying to hide all along, and she isn't mad. Shane's spent his whole life wondering what people close to him would think if he told them, and in a guilty way, he feels really grateful that she'd been the one to bring it up.
When she smiles and leaves him on the sidewalk, the incessant gnawing is slowly replaced by relief, so much relief, and what feels like hope.
He doesn't quite have the courage yet on his own to reach back out to Ilya, so he's glad for the All-Star Game in Florida to give them an excuse to talk and a deadline for him to hype himself up. With a clear goal in mind, his thoughts are clearer. He calms his nerves as much as possible—Ilya must be bracing himself as well—and hires a stylist for a boost of confidence, and when he sees Ilya sitting alone at the bar and not shying away as he approaches, he feels that thrill again, just by being near.
A thrill, a dash of daring, a wild streak, perhaps.
It feels so freeing to not hold himself back anymore.
The feeling is only heightened as Ilya asks him if he's brought anyone, tells him he hasn't either with those sultry, knowing eyes over the lip of his beer bottle. It's that magnetic feeling again that follows as Shane is pleasantly surprised at Ilya responding to his flirting, and even asks about Rose. He watches Ilya dramatically, obviously lose to the kids in the pool and stares as Ilya rises out of the water like a (literal) wet dream and later, much later, lets their thumbs barely brush together in the sand.
Ilya tells him his room number, and its really time.
Shane's heart thuds as he ascends in the elevator, and it accelerates to near panic as he sits down on the bed.
What he doesn't expect is for Ilya to deny things, or laugh when he finally comes out.
"We can't be something," he says. Not I don't want to be something, but can't.
Shane thinks back to everything he's learned about Russia, and the kind of environment Ilya would have had to grow up in, closeted and alone.
"Would you want to be, if we could?"
He can tell Ilya is trying to put that wall between them again. There's that misdirected anger from when they didn't kiss, the panic and trauma and depression fallback. But the more he probes gently, the more Ilya opens up, until he looks to the side.
It takes Shane a moment, but he realizes Ilya is trembling, fighting back tears.
Everything makes so much more sense.
He knows what to do, instinctively. It speaks to how much time he's spent with Ilya and studied him to just react before his brain catches up, crawling into his lap and pressing soothing kisses to his mouth.
I'm here, he tries to say with each one. Let's figure this out together.

Sun-Warmed Skin
Summary:
It's a certain kind of special when Shane is the first thing Ilya reaches for in the morning.
Notes:
Things are looking better, so I wanted to write something fluffy again. :)
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
The first few touches are slow, almost innocent.
Shane still has his eyes closed as he feels Ilya shifting next to him, and Ilya's fingers trailing up his side. Subconsciously, he drifts closer, hands pressed to Ilya's chest, foot sliding up Ilya's calf so that he can hook it over his leg. Ilya offers a soft, sleepy noise of complaint before he finds Shane's chin, bracing it to kiss him. When Shane opens his eyes a little more, Ilya still has his eyes closed, but he doesn't need them to lick his way slowly into Shane's mouth.
This is one of his favorite parts, honestly. Their hands slow and wandering, mouths languid and unhurried, warm soft rays of sunlight muted through half-open eyes. There's the underlying tension and anticipation, sure, but couched under so many layers of sleepy comfortable haze, it's more of an afterthought to just touching each other, being present.
He'd been expecting this, though. He'd picked Ilya up from the airport late last night, and Ilya had insisted on making out with him with the little energy he had left, promising he'd be back for more in the morning. So it doesn't surprise him that Ilya turns him over and presses his half-hard morning erection against Shane's back as he reaches around his waist and stomach to lazily stroke his cock.
"Good morning to you too," Shane mumbles after a soft gasp.
"This is my good morning," Ilya murmurs into his neck, mouthing at it more than kissing. "Making up for no proper good night."
Shane is about to respond when Ilya reaches further to circle the pad of his middle finger around Shane's rim. Shane's eyes are certainly more open now, and he subconsciously wriggles into Ilya's hand and reaches for the lube in the nightstand drawer to pass it back to him. Shane watches the trickles of morning light through the curtains as Ilya stretches him, kissing his shoulder with every quiet moan. By the time Ilya is three fingers deep in him, he's completely awake, rocking back into it with little mewls.
"You're already so ready for me," Ilya purrs. He's got his free arm under and around Shane, absentmindedly massaging his chest, and Shane puts one hand over his, reaching back with the other to grasp at his neck.
"Yeah, so hurry up," he mumbles, but his breathing is heavy.
Ilya just presses his chuckle into Shane's neck, but when Shane lifts his leg to try and nudge Ilya's legs closer with his foot, he does finally take his fingers away. It's an awkward angle, but Shane still spits into his hand and reaches for Ilya's cock as well, enjoying the way it hardens fully under his touch.
Ilya doesn't let him go on for too long, however, taking his cock back and smearing more lube over it. He's usually more of a tease, nudging his cock against Shane a few times and trying to see if Shane will beg for it, but this time he simply goes for it, rewarding Shane's moan with openmouthed kisses against his neck and jaw. Shane loves it when he scoops his arm under Shane's knee as he keeps his hold on his chest, tight enough to hold him in place as he fucks him at whatever pace he wants. Ilya's face is still so close to his, eyes locked on his and warm breath intermingling.
It's all so much. Ilya's singlehanded focus on him, the pressure and security of his hold, the familiarity of his thrusts, the warmth and softness of the blankets around him and daylight beyond—the most arousing thing of it all is how utterly devoted to and loved he feels, him in his entirety.
He's coming before he knows it, crying out Ilya's name as he makes a mess over his stomach and the sheets. Ilya slows as well, kissing him slower, thrusting slower but staying inside him for a moment. Shane slows his breathing as well, letting himself naturally come down before he turns his face more fully to accept another kiss.
"You didn't come yet," he murmurs.
"Doesn't matter, that was amazing." Ilya kisses him again, tongues pressed together for a long moment before he slips out. "Breakfast?"
But Shane shakes his head, shifting until he can roll them over, straddling his lap. He likes his routines, but they can wait if he gets a chance to take care of Ilya, too. Leaning down, he grasps Ilya's face with two hands to kiss him again, grinding back against his still-erect cock.
"I think we have time for another round."
Notes:
Honestly they could probably go for several more rounds. ;)

Everything is perfect. Almost too perfect.
Shane is his again, and he's admitted he's gay and willing to try harder for Ilya. He's still here despite Ilya being vulnerable for perhaps the first time and feeling like too much. Ilya's got his head back in the game and the scoring race, even from cloud nine.
But the thing is, he's never trusted a streak of good luck. There's always the waiting for the other shoe to drop, the anxiety of when everything will inevitably go wrong again.
So he's not as surprised as he should be when he finally picks up Alexei's call.
Everything is a whirlwind for the next twenty-four hours. He wrestles with the team agents to get an emergency flight booked, packs light, sleeps on the plane, and fills with dread as he makes his way through Moscow to home.
He knows better than to expect a warm welcome home. His brother and relatives are all at their worst, demanding for him to take care of all the funeral arrangements, as if he's not grieving the last of his parents, too. He doesn't allow himself a moment alone until after everything is planned for the next couple days, because he knows he'll fucking explode.
All he wants is Shane.
Shane is the first person he calls later, and Shane doesn't demand anything of him. Shane is genuinely concerned for him, and offers him his shoulder, and doesn't question it when Ilya tells him to take off his clothes. Ilya doesn't know how else to deal with the genuine kindness in the moment but offer him something in return that's the only thing he's confident in, but he'll do better for Shane, he swears.
The funeral is terrible, and the dinner afterward is worse. He knows Alexei will catch up to him eventually, and when it happens, he doesn't care about keeping up any sort of pretense. The only thing linking him and his brother anymore had been their father, and now that he's gone, Alexei has no leverage over him.
Ilya hadn't been planning to cut him off entirely just yet in the confusion and aftermath of the funeral, but it just comes out. He can stand whatever Alexei throws at him, but spewing lies and especially insulting Svetlana makes him raise his hands for the first time. If she hadn't been there, he might have done much worse.
Thankfully—or not—Alexei walks away with some dignity intact, and Svetlana is there to pick up his pieces, as always.
Still, its Shane he calls later, as he's lost in overthinking taking a walk in the snow. Shane has always seen the most private parts of him, and now the most vulnerable, and the worst. He's continuing to offer his support and Ilya loves him so, so much for it.
Ilya loves him.
He realizes it as he talks about how he knows his brother is scared and it makes him terrible back. The empathy is always so frustrating, putting him in peoples' shoes he'd rather hate, but it's so easy with Shane, who gives it right back to him. The contrast is so stark. His brother, who he wishes he could know and have a support system with, but who instead gives in to the learned toxic masculinity with little emotional intelligence, versus Shane, who's similarly had to hide himself and mask and play along with societal rules so long that he has the gentle (and painful) understanding of all these things and both fights against the boxes people put him in and has space for others who have to as well.
Shane, who invites him to spill his heart and guts out even if he doesn't understand Russian.
I give them everything, and I feel so fucking empty. That's the gist of it, isn't it? He's spent so long pouring everything into people who don't even want to try giving it back. If it weren't for Svetlana and being physically away from this godforsaken place for most of the year, he'd probably have snapped long ago.
Even so, it wasn't until Shane that he truly experienced having something he wants to protect and fight for.
"Fuck me," he whispers into the phone.
Shane waits patiently, and so he says it anyway, still banking on Shane not understanding him. The longing in his voice is probably painfully clear, but he doesn't care.
And Shane—sweet, wonderful Shane—tells him exactly what he's thinking too, that he wishes they were together right now.
Ilya owes him the world, and he's damn well going to give it to him.
The next couple weeks are a blur of getting back to Boston and calling Shane more, and Ilya is trying, trying to let the newness and happiness balance out the grief in his heart. He's so excited to play against Shane in their upcoming game (and for what they have planned after that he's barely spending any time online, and sort of feels bad for being slow to respond to EscapistNerd's messages, but he's sure his friend would understand that big things are happening.
At the start of their game, Shane has the audacity to approach him directly on the ice, and Ilya tries to fight down his smile. It's increasingly harder however as Shane grins at him as he passes, and Ilya can't stop his amusement from breaking out on his face—
Shane is lying on the ice, barely conscious.
The medics keep yelling at him to leave, but it's all a rush of blood roaring in his ears. He can't think straight, he doesn't care what it looks like—the absolute, crushing fear that grips him is all-encompassing.
He can't lose one of the only people he has left.
It's hours and hours after the game before he gets any word about Shane's hospital whereabouts, and then its after visiting hours, so he's stuck waiting for the next day. He's restless, pacing and trying to keep conversations and message threads going. He tries messaging EscapistNerd too, but they're eerily quiet the whole day, and he finally gives up, just going to sleep.
Hollander is so drugged up when he finally slips into his hospital room, and Ilya's heart cracks at the cast on his arm. But Shane is so happy to see him, which eases the ache a little. Ilya allows himself just the smallest of touches after Shane takes his hand, lightly brushing Shane's cheek and his beautiful freckles, and the knot starts to loosen in his chest as Shane leans into it like a cat.
Shane tells him deliriously that he had a plan to ask Ilya something the night before, and despite Ilya's slight protest, asks him about the cottage.
Ilya's heart sinks.
"You know I can't do that."
But he wants to, is the thing. He wants to spend a perfect couple of weeks alone with Shane in a little getaway paradise where no one will bother them. Unfortunately, being famous means he's used to people recognizing him on the street, and he can't have that, for both of them.
"Maybe," is all that he can weakly promise before the nurse comes in. More words stick in his throat, words he wants so desperately to say but can't. "Maybe."
For now, he'll take the blessing that Hollander is alive and okay. It's not the time, and it's not the first time he's had to swallow those words.

Summary:
Ilya brings Shane home from the hospital.
Notes:
Just hoping that Hollander is doing better so I gave him Ilya to cheer up.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
Ilya paces the waiting room nervously.
The doctors had told him that Shane would be right out, but every second feels like hours. He feels like barging into the room on his own, but he's sure he'd be kicked out and denited taking Shane with him, so he waits, frustration mounting.
When the door finally opens, his heart jumps at seeing Shane walk through the door, slow but only with his arm in a sling and nothing else broken. He looks up, and his eyes light up at seeing Ilya, reaching out his good arm for him. Ilya blinks back tears and strides forward the last few feet to grip his arm. He tries to listen to the doctor's instructions as he watches Shane, and thankfully they're released soon enough.
Once they're alone, Ilya gathers Shane in his arms carefully so as not to jostle the sling, and Shane buries his face in Ilya's neck.
"God, you scared me," Ilya murmurs.
"I'm sorry," Shane says, but Ilya shakes his head and kisses the side of his head.
"You have nothing to apologize for." Ilya rubs his back soothingly, but it's partly for himself as well. "Okay to walk?"
Shane nods as he lets go, but he still loops his arm around Ilya's as they slowly make their way out of the hospital. Ilya shields his head just in case as he gets into the car, and smiles at him again as he settles into the driver's seat.
"I'm so glad you're okay," he says again. "I love you."
Shane's eyes soften, and he leans across the center console to cup Ilya's face, kissing him gently. "I'm okay," he repeats. "I love you too, and because I love you I know you're going to take care of me like a helicopter parent."
Ilya does laugh a little at that, even as a couple more tears form in the corners of his eyes. "Count on it, and never do that to me again."
"Yes, sir."

Shane smiles at the open AO3 page.
It's such a nice thought that Ilya could have taken him home from the hospital since they were in Boston anyway that he's reread this short little drabble multiple times. He has too much time during recovery anyway, mostly spending it on his parents' couch and texting Ilya, and he's glad the fic doesn't reflect actual events (other than the I love you that he thinks about too wistfully, perhaps). He's glad to see that Star had also slowly started responding to him again as well, and he naturally has to gush about this fic to them.

There's a little twinge of melancholy in Shane's chest as he rereads it. It would be nice, wouldn't it? Perhaps he'd feel less obligated to stay in the closet if MLH were better. Perhaps he could be public about Ilya, if they ever got to that point.
For now, he'll take the small wins he's getting.
His parents sit down with him to watch the finals, and cheer for Boston's loss despite Shane's protests and his mom's slightly-less-hatred of Ilya after the hospital. David is rounding them both up for dinner as they watch the players celebrate on the ice, and some movement from Scott Hunter catches his eye.
He sits forward more as Hunter invites someone down from the stands, and Ilya is already texting him. He absentmindedly responds before looking closer, and Hunter is taking the hand of the person he'd opened the gate for, leading him to center ice.
The breath is stolen from his lungs as Hunter and the man lean in to kiss each other.
A million thoughts are swirling in his head. Had he known Hunter was gay? Hunter had seemed pretty quiet when JJ was talking about queer people in Russia, but Shane had assumed his awkwardness might just have been about the general topic. Hunter had pointed out him and Ilya as a unit at the Vegas awards, and he'd had that knowing look during the game they'd played against Ilya and…
Shane's phone is ringing.
It's Ilya.
I'm coming to the cottage, he says, before Shane has a chance to react.
Which brings him to now, having driven himself and Ilya to the cottage, with so much sweet excitement and nervousness and anticipation between them. With his promise lying on top of Ilya on his own couch that they be completely honest with each other now. With Ilya taking his hand in the car and admitting he hasn't had sex with anyone else since their last time and making lighthearted fun of him for making too many burgers and asking him about his parents.
It's such a dream. Even the more melancholy parts are soft and gentle, like Ilya opening up about his parents and Shane reassuring him he's gay. Waking up in his arms. Kicking around a ball and swimming idly, like they have all the time in the world.
Shane never wants to go back to pretending to be nonchalant, or like he's not in love.
Perhaps that's why he reacts so strongly to Ilya talking about marrying for the passport. The thought of Ilya choosing another life partner, even for show, raises every hackle in his body. And even though Ilya reassures him that he's only thinking about Shane and won't do it if he asks, it keeps him up late that night, thinking, stewing.
He tries writing fic about it. He types out some messages to Star that he ends up deleting because he doesn't want to give anything away. Finally, he just types: What do you do when you're jealous?
There's no response, predictably, since their part of the world is asleep right now, so he stews some more, and then he can't wait any longer, turning to wake Ilya up with his ideas. Ilya listens to him ramble half-awake about playing for Ottawa instead, and about the charity, and his eyes are softer when Shane talks about retiring together.
"You really think that far ahead, Hollander?"
"I do."
"And is that what you want? To be together?"
"So much. So much it scares me."
Ilya is still crying as he kisses him. And never in a million years could Shane have predicted him telling it to him straight: I love you.
He must take Shane's silence as dismissal, so Shane doesn't let him take it back. Instead, he says it a second time, and lets Ilya's answer sink into his bones with his weight draped over Shane's body.

Eyes On Me
Summary:
Shane deals with his jealousy on the hotel balcony.
Notes:
You ever think about how all those women in Ilya's repertoire would make Shane jealous? Yeah, me neither.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
Shane knows, okay?
He knows Ilya likes the attention from pretty women, no matter how much he's into Shane. Logically, Shane has no reason to think that Ilya would ever choose any of them over him, and yet the anxiety lizard brain persists.
So here he is, sitting upright on the edge of a pool lounger with a barely-touched beer, gripping the bottle much too tightly as he watches Ilya laugh with a small group of women at the other end of the pool.
One of the problems is that he can't actually tell whether Ilya is being polite or enjoying them in a friendly way, or just likes the attention. His brain is defying the logic anyway, and he has half a mind to storm over and put his arm around Ilya just to show them. He's half sure that Ilya would laugh and call him cute but go along with him anyway. But there's the other wolf in Shane's brain that tells him its an overreaction, which isn't helping him overcome the overthinking.
Ilya laughs and touches one woman's elbow, and Shane suddenly can't watch them anymore.
He doesn't care what he looks like storming away toward the elevators and jamming the button for the penthouse. Ilya should know by now that he gets jealous even if he doesn't show it much. He should be careful about appearances, dammit, even if it wasn't intentional.
Breathing hard, Shane stalks into the hotel suite. He can't stand looking at all their stuff and their clothes tossed on the ground from the night before, so he restlessly drifts toward the sliding doors to the balcony instead, slowing his breathing as he looks out over the ocean.
He should probably think of something more mature to say to Ilya instead of never speak to another woman again.
It takes several minutes to slow himself down, until he doesn't react strongly as the balcony door slides open quietly behind him. He doesn't say anything as Ilya slides his arms around Shane's waist from behind, chin on his shoulder, but he doesn't push him away either.
"Sometimes I forget how jealous you can get." Ilya's tone is lighthearted, amused.
Shane's skin prickles slightly in irritation again. "And it doesn't bother you."
Ilya hums, thinking about it. "Well, not if it means you love me so much you wouldn't share."
No matter how much Shane had pushed down the feeling before, it starts to well in his chest again, and he turns. Seeing Ilya's slightly smiling face only breaks the dam, and Shane grabs his face roughly with both hands to kiss him. He drinks in Ilya's muffled noise of surprise, and his moans as he realizes what's happening, but as Ilya's hands start to wander under his shirt, he pushes them away, pulling back to glare at him.
"No," he says. "I wouldn't share. You're mine. So act like it."
He's kissing him again before Ilya can answer, more openmouthed, places a hand on Ilya's chest and backs him toward the wicker divan on one end of the balcony. Pushing him down to sit back against the pillows, Shane shoves his pants down past his knees and gives up getting them all the way off in his urgency to climb into Ilya's lap. It's easier to pin him down this way, grabbing his face again, kissing his mouth and neck, grabbing at his chest.
He's vaguely aware of Ilya's slightly flushed face in the corner of his eye as he looks down to shove Ilya's shorts down and grab his cock. There's no way he's getting up to grab the lube from his suitcase, so he spits instead, stroking Ilya to full hardness before he reaches behind himself to stretch himself a little.
"Let me," Ilya tries to start, but Shane shoots him another look.
"You're not concerned with losing the privilege to do it, right? So just watch."
Ilya's hand falters, but he lets Shane prep himself with wider, almost puppy-dog eyes, tensing himself with every expression and soft moan. By the time Shane reaches back around for Ilya's cock again, he has a full pout going, one that Shane will absolutely not fold to.
"Shane," Ilya pleads, setting his hands on Shane's hips.
"Yeah?" Shane ignores his hands, instead rising a little and grabbing Ilya's cock. Whatever Ilya was going to say is cut off by a curse as Shane sinks down onto him, heavy breaths in the scant space between their mouths.
Shane lets himself get used to the full feeling for a second. As he looks down and drapes his arms over Ilya's shoulders, he leans in closer. "I know we're all the way up in the penthouse and facing the water, but imagine for a second that people could see us through the railing. Those women by the pool, any of your flings, anyone you want. They'd see me sitting on your cock and immediately know it's not for them."
Ilya glances toward the railing, then up at Shane, eyes somewhat in awe. "Yeah," he agrees. "I get it, I'm yours."
Shane pauses.
"Say it again."
"What, that I am yours?"
"Yeah. Again."
Ilya's smile this time is a little softer, and Shane lets him initiate a kiss. "I'm yours," he murmurs. "I'm yours, Shane."
"Fuck, Ilya."
Shane rocks his hips forward and back, loose enough to lift himself up and sink back down again. The drag of Ilya's cock inside him makes them both moan, and Shane moves his hips more urgently. By the time they're both close, Ilya has his face buried in Shane's neck, thrusting up into him to help with the movement, and Shane grabs at his hair.
"I'm coming, I'm coming," Ilya pants, trying to slip his cock free, but Shane only grinds down harder, gripping his shoulders.
"Stay right there," he growls, and Ilya moans louder as he comes, filling Shane with his seed and triggering his own orgasm. "Ah, fuck, yeah, that's it. Keep going, fuck whatever come leaks out back—back into me."
Ilya is only too happy with that order, still thrusting after the orgasm fades. Shane is so content that he slumps forward, his weight now mostly supported by Ilya so that Ilya has to slow down.
"That good, hm?"
Shane nods. "So… you get it now?"
"Okay, alright, no more flirting with very pretty women who are very clearly interested in me."
Shane thumps his arm with his fist loosely, but he feels too much like jelly to have any real effect. "Ilya, you asshole. I mean it."
Ilya laughs, wrapping him up without pulling out or letting go just yet. Perfect. "I mean, I will try not to, but if I knew you would react in such a hot possessive way…"
"Ilya."
"Okay, okay. If I need someone to flirt with I come find you."
"Good."

Shane has a moment or two while Ilya is in the shower, and he already has an idea for a promo image for this fic, so he pulls out his computer very quickly to put something together. He doesn't have a lot of artistic talent, but it's usually pretty easy to find an aesthetic image that fits the vibe and content of the fic and put some text over it, and he likes having a carefully curated archive thread of his fics on his writing Twitter account.
He probably doesn't have much time, so he hurries through alt text and writing out the title and other info for the caption, hitting post right before Ilya walks out of the bathroom asking about lunch. Phew. Shane hides his sigh of relief while he stands up to stretch, then follows Ilya into the kitchen.
They get into a silly argument about who should cook, which of course ends up in a lot of kissing—and god, Shane's going to miss being able to do that every day when their little vacation is over—but Ilya eventually wins and sends him to sit down at the bar counter. Shane is still smiling to himself as he takes out his phone again, but it slowly fades as he sees notification after notification popping up.
They're all from his official hockey account.
82,734 people have liked your post.
Post? He hasn't posted anything since getting to the cottage, and he's sure that his mother wouldn't have either.
Dread grows in the pit of his stomach as he clicks on the app. In his notifications tab, there's a growing body count in the thousands, for a post that he absolutely did not mean for this account.

Fuck. Fuck. This is not happening. This is his worst nightmare.
Shane can already feel his breathing quickening and the beginning signs of a panic attack spreading through his body. His vision tunnels to just the phone screen as he moves on instinct, clicking on the three dots to delete the post. His hands are shaking and he keeps missing it as his vision blurs with frustrated tears.
"Shane? Shane. Look at me."
Shane flinches hard at first even with Ilya's comforting hand on his back, and drops his phone. Thankfully, Ilya catches it before it hits the hardwood, but Shane's panic takes over, making him reach blindly for it. Ilya can't see this. He can't—
"Hey, slow down," Ilya grunts, putting his arm in front of Shane to block him. "I'm just going to look to see what made you panic, okay? We'll figure this out."
"No!" Shane tries weakly, blinking his tears away furiously. "You can't see!"
Ilya frowns, blinking at him. "Why not?"
"Please," Shane says, his voice breaking a little. "I've never shown it to anyone, and now… I can't." His writing is the only thing he has completely to himself, that he can escape in and get a taste of freedom. If that's taken away…
Ilya frowns gently and passes the phone back to him after a moment.
"What do you need?" he asks, rubbing Shane's back soothingly again.
Shane almost tears up again, but he tries to think. "I… I need to take care of something. I'll just… be in the bedroom."
Ilya nods. "Can I find you in ten minutes?"
Shane smiles a little, forcing a slow, shaky exhale. "Yeah," he says. Slowly, he stands, and gives Ilya a grateful kiss. "Thank you."
"Ten minutes," Ilya reminds him before turning back to the stove.
Pocketing the reminder, Shane hurries into the bedroom and takes out his laptop, feverishly typing in his Twitter profile address. The first order of business is to delete the post, which is still gaining traction, then switching over to his private writing account and deleting his posts and account there too. He knows that fans will still have screenshots of the post on his official account and maybe the private one if they find it, because nothing is ever truly lost on the internet, but at least he can do whatever little damage control he can before his mom blows a gasket.
He feels slightly calmer now that his brain knows what to do. It hurts, yes, but he navigates to Archive Of Our Own, clicking on his dashboard to bring up his fics. He only hesitates because by doing this, he'll lose kudos, comments, usernames, friends… Star. But his safety is paramount.
Whispering an apology, he starts deleting every fic.
That first fic from 2010 as he'd been unable to ignore his attraction to Ilya anymore. His fics processing Ilya being away from him or treating him coldly. Every milestone in their sexual and emotional journey over so many years… Shane feels his heart sinking as each one disappears. He still has the original working documents, of course, but it's still a heavy weight upon his shoulders.
After he deletes everything, he clicks over to his account settings and steels himself, deleting his account entirely.
Tears prickle at his eyes again, but at least he's done what he can.
It doesn't take Ilya long to finish breakfast and set out two plates, so there's still time before he can go find Shane. Idly, he takes out his phone to check for messages, and Twitter is usually the first place he clicks on for anything from EscapistNerd, either in DMs or posts.
When he tries to click on their profile, however, he gets an error.
Blinking, he tries to manually search for them, but to no avail. No keywords he tries brings up any of their posts, and the same thing happens when he tries to look for their AO3 account.
Nothing. Everything is gone.
His heart sinks. He'd been friends with EscapistNerd for over six years now, and suddenly their account is gone? He'd last heard from his friend just yesterday, and everything had seemed okay, great even. What happened?
He can't even talk to anyone about it, and if he did he's sure they'd tell him it's just an online friend. But after being in fandom space for so long now, he knows how precious those people are—the only people he'd been able to authentically engage with while in Russia, the only way to express himself in relative safety aside from every stolen moment with Shane in person, the only place he could admit to and explore certain things about himself.
Maybe EscapistNerd had something similar to his own fears happen to them. He hopes feverishly that it isn't the case, but he can't help having a bad feeling about it.
Heart heavy, he's almost about to close out of the Twitter search when he sees the trending topics.

Ilya sure knows about this now, and he can't believe what he's seeing.
All these screenshots of the deleted post, and he can tell exactly who formats their posts and promo images like that—someone whose entire AO3 has just been wiped for probably this very reason.
Someone like…
He's already standing before the thought fully forms in his head, making a beeline for the closed bedroom door. He's never knocked before, but he does so now, hands trembling.
"Shane?" he calls. "Shane, I need to come in."
There's silence from inside, then the eventual shuffle of feet. Shane opens the door slowly, his eyes puffy and red, so Ilya reaches out first, wrapping him up in his arms.
"Hey," he says gently. "I don't know how else to say it, but… I saw Twitter."
Shane stiffens in his arms, but he holds on tighter. "No, listen to me for a moment. Maybe six years ago, I was in the same place. I started exploring hockey Twitter, and found RPF of us and other players, and… I thought it would be a good place to put my feelings. I wasn't even that good at English then, but a kind user liked my fanfics enough to comment, and that encouraged me to keep writing, and we became friends."
Slowly, Shane stills, and pulls away just enough to look at him. "Wait… You too?"
Ilya nods, and starts to smile, cupping Shane's face. "This user only wrote smut and I only wrote fluff and such, but they were my closest friend in the fandom community. Do you want to guess who it was?"
The slow dawning realization on Shane's face is so worth it, and so is the way his eyes go wide and his mouth stretches into a confused but delighted smile.
"You're starfragments?"
A small laugh of equal disbelief escapes Ilya's mouth. "I can't believe you're EscapistNerd either."
Shane starts laughing as well, and the two of them double over, clutching their sides and holding onto each other. Shane looks at him with that smile, and presses his hands over his mouth, and they keep breaking off into laughter for several minutes.
"I can't fucking believe it," Shane says again, grabbing Ilya's shoulders and dragging him further into the room to sit on the bed. "Why didn't you say anything?"
Ilya raises an eyebrow. "I didn't know you knew anything about fanfiction. And I had to hide it for the same reasons, probably."
"That's true," Shane concedes. He looks down at their hands, lacing his fingers through Ilya's. "What a fucking crazy coincidence, huh?"
"Might as well be a fanfic scenario," Ilya agrees. "Feels like… I don't know, some destiny bullshit. We meet in real life and online, become close no matter where it is."
Shane's smile is softer, and he leans in to kiss Ilya for a long moment. "It sounds so romantic when you say that." He sighs, making a face as they pull apart. "As if my life isn't falling apart."
Ilya shakes his head. "No, not falling apart. It will blow over."
"You don't know that," Shane groans, dropping his forehead to Ilya's shoulder.
"It will," Ilya says with conviction. "And if it doesn't do so naturally, your mom will find a way."
"Fuck," Shane sighs. "My mom. What am I going to tell her?"
As if on cue, Shane's phone rings on the nightstand, startling both of them. Ilya starts to laugh at the panic in Shane's eyes, and Shane hits him before he picks up.
"Mom?" he asks, then winces. "Yeah… Yeah, I know." He pauses, and shoots a glance at Ilya, who places a soothing hand on his back. "No it's… Unfortunately, it's real."
Of course he can't lie. Ilya smiles as Shane agrees for his parents to come over, and then tells her that Ilya is here as well. He doesn't mention anything about Ilya also having a writing account as well, which Ilya is grateful for, but he should probably look into making his own fic Twitter private, at least.
"I'm sorry," he says, rubbing his hand over Shane's knee once he's set the phone down. "I was the one who originally said you might want to make promo posts for your fics…"
Shane shakes his head. "That doesn't make it your fault. And you know, six or seven years is a pretty good run to keep it a secret."
He does seem calmer about the whole thing, so Ilya nods. "What do you want to tell your mother about it?"
Shane groans and flops over with his head face down in Ilya's lap. "I don't want to," he mumbles, muffled. "How the hell do you talk to your mother about fanfiction as a normal person, much less a closeted public figure?"
Ilya snorts and strokes Shane's back soothingly. "I don't know, I've never done it," he tries lightheartedly, and Shane doesn't have to lift his head to weakly hit his fist against Ilya's leg. "But I suppose you have to tell her the truth about some things for her to be able to help you."
"Just kill me instead," Shane grumbles. "Not to mention she'll have to know I'm gay and that I'm actually in a relationship with you. Fuck."
Ilya is a bit quieter as he processes all this, which is so many big steps in one for Shane, clearly.
"We'll talk to them together, okay?"
Shane loops his arms around Ilya's waist in a hug, turning a grateful smile up toward him.
"Okay."
"So… Fanfiction is fan-created stories."
"Yes."
"And Real Person Fiction is fanfiction about real people like celebrities."
"Yes."
Yuna Hollander smooths her hands down the front of her blouse. It's at times like these that Shane wishes she didn't have such a good poker face, so that he could tell what she's thinking.
"It's… not really meant for our eyes," he tries. "Fans write it more like communication to each other, and maybe projection or using us like characters to explore things."
Yuna tilts her head. "And for you?"
"What?"
"What did you use it for?"
Her voice is a little guarded, but soft. She looks… If Shane had to guess, he'd say she looks a little guilty, but for what he can't understand.
He looks toward Ilya, who's sitting next to him on the couch. Ilya smiles encouragingly and nods, prompting Shane to answer truthfully. If he weren't here, Shane isn't sure he would even be facing this conversation half as bravely.
"I… I learned about RPF and fandom stuff earlier, but I started posting fanfics about seven years ago because I was trying to deal with possibly being gay." He looks down, fiddling with his hands in his lap. "I didn't really have another outlet, or anyone I could talk to about everything, and I kept denying it. So I guess writing out everything I was feeling was my main coping mechanism for so long."
He chances a peek upward, and his mother looks close to tears, his father's brows furrowed in sadness and concern next to her. David sits forward, rubbing his hands on his knees as he turns over Shane's words.
"So… This is not an accusation, but a genuine question. Were you planning on telling us?"
Shane sort of wants to lie, but he is both bad at it and can't in this situation. "I wanted to," he says at last, "but I had no way of knowing how you would react, because we'd never had a conversation related to queerness, I guess. I thought you'd be okay, but… yeah, I just wanted to be safe. Safer."
Yuna turns her head away physically, and Shane feels that sinking sort of sensation in his chest until she turns her face back toward him with tears in her eyes.
"I'm so sorry," she starts, and Shane is already shaking his head, but she puts up a hand to stop him. "I'm not… We're not going to stop loving you for that. Ever. You're still our son, the same son. And I'm glad that you had this outlet for yourself but I just… I wish I had been better about it for you. Talked about things like this. So you didn't have to feel like you had to hide it, or couldn't lean on us."
By this point, Shane is tearing up too, for what feels like the hundredth time. "Mom, it's okay."
Yuna shakes her head again, and stands up, placing her hand on top of Shane's head, and then his cheek. "It's not okay, but I can do better."
Shane furiously wipes at his eyes as he stands, enveloping her in a hug. "It is okay, mom. It wasn't easy but I forgive you. I know you've been trying your best."
A quiet sob wracks her body in response, and they spend a long time like that, just holding each other and letting all the heaviness melt into the floor. When they finally pull away, Yuna cups his face again.
"The one thing I can do, right now, is help with this whole situation. I don't know if you want an official statement, or if you want to let it pass, or if you want to come out at all, but whatever you choose is okay and I will support you through that. Okay?"
It takes all of Shane's willpower not to burst into tears again, and he buries his face in her shoulder again, nodding and holding on tighter.
Later, when his parents have left and he's alone with Ilya again, they take their dinner out to the fire pit, sitting close and listening to the crackle of the flames and other soothing twilight sounds.
"So, that went well," Ilya prompts in between bites.
Shane nods slowly. "I'm surprised, but it really did go the best it could have. One less thing to worry about."
"I could create a different scandal so people forget," Ilya jokes, and Shane laughs, despite himself.
"Don't do that."
"You sure? I could start a gambling ring. I bet Cliff would help me."
Shane rolls his eyes, even though laughing is definitely helping his mind settle. "Ilya, you are not going to risk your career for me and that is final."
"Fine," Ilya grumbles lightheartedly, and turns back to his food. "Boring."
Shane smiles. He doesn't know what's going to happen with this whole thing, but he's glad Ilya's there with him. They're quiet for a few minutes, and then Ilya speaks up again.
"What about your fics?"
Shane frowns. "What about them?"
"You deleted everything," Ilya says carefully. "I don't know if you have backups or…"
"I do. All my working documents are still there. But I'm not going to repost them."
Ilya nods. "Makes sense… But will you let me read them? Will you ever post any fics again?"
Shane considers it for a long moment, staring into the fire. It's probably too soon to have a definitive answer, but writing fics and being a part of fandom community has been a core part of his journey, and had really gotten him through so many rough times. And Ilya had once again been privy to one of the most vulnerable parts of him, whether he knew it was Ilya or not.
"Maybe," he says at last. "I can't promise anything yet, but I don't know if I could give it up completely. And I'd have to start over under a new username, at least."
"It should have my name in it," Ilya jokes. "IlyasBabygirl, 9InchRozanov, HarderIlyaHarder…"
Shane rolls his eyes and swats at his arm. "You asshole," he laughs. "You wish. Besides, I don't want it to have anything that could be traced back to either of us, like names. I'm glad no one's found your fic accounts yet, but if they know it's me and think that you might have an account too…"
Ilya nods, placing his hand on Shane's knee to rub it comfortingly. "Yes, I understand. And it's not pressure, either. The fandom world will be there whenever you want to go back."
That's true. It's Shane's decision, and in the face of this whole mess, he's glad to have control over some small part of it.
He just has to trust that everything else will fall into place.

Summary:
Ilya finally moves in with Shane.
Notes:
For LoonWhisperer.
for new fandom friend. they put this thought in my head and now it won't leave. so you're welcome
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
It's only when the door closes behind Shane's parents that Ilya turns directly toward Shane and grabs his waist for a kiss.
"What's that for?" Shane asks, but he probably doesn't realize (still) that he has this adorable little grin he can't stop.
"First kiss in our new place."
"It's not a new place, though."
"It's new for me," Ilya shrugs, pecking his cheek again. "And it's new that we're living together now."
Shane just smiles, and finally obliges him by giving him another kiss. "That's true." Turning his head, he nods at the closest pile of boxes. "What should we unpack first?"
"I don't want to unpack," Ilya whines, slumping forward so that his chin rests on Shane's shoulder.
He can hear Shane's exasperation in his voice, but he does rub Ilya's back. "I know you're tired, but you're going to regret it if we don't do at least the essentials now. Besides, weren't you excited to build new bookcases?"
Ilya sighs. "Yes, okay, but can we eat first?"
"Sure," Shane says, turning toward the kitchen. "I have leftover lasagna, I can make miscellaneous noodle soup with some other stuff I have…"
"As long as you're making it, I'll enjoy it," Ilya says, happily staying latched onto Shane's back as they waddle toward the fridge.
Shane doesn't comment on him being sappier than usual as he hums and does his best to work around the kitchen with Ilya refusing to let go of him. Ilya can't believe that he can just do this all the time now, every day even. Shane will be within his reach whenever he wants, and he can keep kissing the back of Shane's neck even though he complains lightheartedly about being distracted. He's sure that he'll get addicted to this.
The thought energizes him. By the time they're done eating—the first meal in their new home together—Ilya does have the energy to pull out the box with all the parts to the bookcase he wanted for the spare room.
"You know, this room might be occupied, in the future," Shane says quietly as he hands Ilya another screw.
"What do you mean?"
Shane looks away, shyer than he has been in a long time. "I just thought… I mean, if we ever wanted a kid…"
Ilya pauses, looking at him more properly. "You want a kid with me?"
"Or a pet!" Shane says quickly. "It's not pressure. I just like the thought of taking care of something with you—"
Ilya is so overcome with affection that he leans forward to kiss him around the wooden structure coming together. Even if he isn't sure what's in store for them, he knows how far ahead Shane thinks about them, about what he wants with Ilya.
"I'm so lucky that you want all that with me," he says, cupping Shane's cheek. "That you want a life with me."
Shane's eyes soften. "I do. I… plan a lot of things around you."
Ilya scoots forward even more to wrap Shane up in a hug, project be damned.
"It's one of the things that makes me feel the most loved."
Shane holds onto him just as tight, and Ilya thinks that nothing could be more perfect.
