Misplaced

by AshwinMeird

Summary

Shane woke up a few days after an accident and his first memories were of 2016. Of a game in Boston and a recent run in with a movie star.

Or

Yuna (and David) witness a small taste of what things really were like for their boys all those years ago.

Notes

It is honestly absurd that it took me this long to write a fic for them after the show started but here I am and it will not be my last lol

Misplaced

“Mrs. Hollander?”

Yuna blinked until she could focus on Wyatt once more. That did not seem like it was the first time the young man had tried to get her attention. He had made for good company at Shane’s bedside since David finally dragged Ilya back to their house to get some sleep in a real bed. He had been explaining some of his superhero people to her before her mind drifted off. “I have told you all before, you can call me Yuna.”

Of all of the boys’ teammates, Wyatt was one she was more familiar with from the camps but she could never get a read on him. Goaltenders, they were a strange kind but she had long since had to get Ilya and Shane to stop telling her stories about the things he thought about during games that weren’t hockey because it was dreadful for her nerves.

“Yuna.” He smiled briefly. “I told Lisa I’d be home after her shift was over…”

“Go, go. Shane and I will be fine on our own for a bit.”

Shane had come to a couple of times since the accident, but never for long. He hadn’t been able to talk with the level of pain killers they had him on for the first couple days keeping him subdued. He had been lucky, no concussion or broken bones but he was bruised all down his left side from the impact to the driver’s side of their vehicle. He had been quite jostled, both his head and his muscles were going to need some time to recuperate from that.

Wyatt nodded as he returned a couple of his comic books into his bag. He had come prepared to spend most of a day in a quiet hospital room. He hadn’t been the only one of the boys’ teammates to drop by, but not all of them stuck around the city during the off season and many took up other responsibilities that couldn’t be left for that long. The ones who couldn’t be there had been checking in through Ilya and sending their well wishes after the initial mass visit the day of the accident. Yuna appreciated their support for both Shane and Ilya.

“How much longer do you think David can keep Roz away?”

Yuna glanced down at her phone. She didn’t have any new notification since the last time she looked. “He crashed in Shane’s old room as soon as they got home. David has food ready for whenever he wakes so he might be able to convince him to eat before driving him back here.”

“He doesn’t take well to Holly being hurt.”

“He loves Shane.” And they love him, which is why they forced him to get some real rest for the first time since the accident.

It was unsettling to see Shane so still. He hadn’t stopped moving since he first got his feet- and not much later, skates- under him. Wyatt had left an hour or so ago, leaving Yuna alone with her thoughts and her unconscious son.

She tried to distract herself in the usual ways, checking her work email, rereading contracts, proofing any interview releases for the foundation. It was about the dozenth time she had since her and David first got the call about the boys’ accident. She almost regretted not accepting one of the comic books Wyatt had offered upon his departure.

It had been an impaired driver. Shane and Ilya had been on a late night drive together during their yearly solo weeks at the cottage. They were supposed to be recuperating, safe from the hits and wayward blades of the season, not ending up in the hospital. Ilya wasn’t unscathed, but it had taken her lifetime of experience of dealing with Shane at his most stubborn to make him sit his ass back down in the emergency room when Shane was brought back for tests and Ilya had blood running down his arm from glass cuts.

“M’m?” Yuna’s eyes snapped to Shane as his head tipped back and forth. His eyes were still closed, to avoid the dim light in the room or because of lingering exhaustion, she didn’t know. “Wh’rmy?”

“You’re in the hospital,” she gently placed her hand on his wrist, not wanting to scare him by touching anywhere else too suddenly, “you were in a car accident a couple days ago, but you were both pretty lucky.”

She needed to go get a nurse or doctor, they had said to send someone out of Shane’s room for them if he woke up between the nurses’ routine check ins. It would have been easier if Wyatt was still there or David and Ilya were back already, but Wyatt was gone and the text from her husband saying they were on their way was only minutes old. She couldn’t just up and leave Shane the moment he woke up, she would shortly. As soon as his worries were settled and leaving wouldn’t send him into a panic-spiral.

“H’rts,” he said, punctuating the word with a groan.

“You will be sore for a while, the doctors are worried about whiplash and soft tissue damage from the impact but you didn’t fracture or break anything. They don’t anticipate much long term damage, but you might have to take a less active role in coaching this year.”

Shane blinked his eyes open for just long enough for her to watch them cloud with confusion before closing again. “Coach’ng?”

Yuna stiffened. “The camps?” Nothing. “The Irina Foundation with…” She trailed off before finishing that thought when Shane didn’t show any recognition to their Foundation. “Honey, what is the last thing you remember?”

“Hockey… play’ng,” something grim crossed his face, it was twisted and agonizing and gone before she could blink, “B’st’n.”

“Anything else?”

“Met… g’rl. Rose.”

It was time to get the doctor. Maybe several. Probably several. They had brain specific doctors, they would know what to do.

David would know what to do, he always did better with the medical stuff, anything with unknowns. Yuna thrived on statistics and quantifiable data points but people’s bodies weren’t like that. She could pick out an injured player on even the smallest of TV screens but she left the concept of recovery and anything actually related to medicine to whatever update she read about that player next.

They were going to take him in for more scans. None of the original ones suggested major head trauma in the accident. Impact with the side of the door, yes, but the accident had happened on winding backroads so it wasn’t too terribly fast.

It was most likely a perfect storm of his body being exhausted from healing, the lingering smaller dose of pain medication, and his head having gotten a little jostled during the accident. Likely very temporary.

The new scans didn’t suggest anything was missed the first time.

Shane was back in his room room with a nurse changing his bandages and explaining his injuries. Yuna and David had been there when they had first talked Ilya through everything, the lacerations and bruises, suggestions of what physical therapy might be needed if different muscles were impacted, but Shane always liked to know everything he needed to himself.

He had struggled to stay conscious when he first woke, but his alertness only increased the longer they kept him awake. Now that he had come to on his own it was best to keep him awake for longer and longer periods until he was ready to return to a normal resting schedule.

“Why are you down here?” It wasn’t the most pleasant greeting to receive from one’s son-in-law, but under the circumstances Yuna wasn’t bothered by it. Ilya looked substantially less like a zombie than he had when David dragged him out earlier, but there were still dark bags under his eyes and the hoodie pulled up over his head didn’t cover the few small cuts on his cheek.

“Shane is with some nurses.” Yuna let David silently lead the three of them away from the hospital entrance. She hadn’t been able to give him a heads up on what was happening as he had been driving since Shane woke up and she wasn’t about to tell Ilya that his worries about missing Shane finally waking up weren’t in vain but there was more that was wrong. “He woke up not too long ago.”

Yuna couldn’t meet Ilya’s eyes.

His face fell.

“What is wrong with him?”

“He’s having some memory troubles. The doctors think it is extremely likely temporary based on his general fogginess and confusion but he is missing some time right now.”

“How long?”

That was a little bit of a grey area. When the neurologist was talking to Shane it had been a bit more all over the place than his first couple notable events he could remember implied- Montreal had played Boston not long before the oldest article Yuna could find suggesting that Rose and Shane were an item but his memory wasn’t cut and dry set back to right around them. He wasn’t sure who won the cup the season before that but recognized Canada’s most recent Prime Minister’s name even if he hadn’t been able to come up with it himself. He knew the name of the youngest Pike but still said Montreal when asked which team he played for.

He hesitated before answering that question and Yuna had asked the doctor if it was imperative for them to determine the exact extent of his memory loss at that moment. She had said that they had a good enough idea for right then but would have to keep prodding to track if more was coming back to him as time went on.

Shane hadn’t been pleased when he figured out she was hiding things from him but he begrudgingly accepted her request to wait for David to arrive before they talked about anything major that had happened in his life in the last number of years. Focusing on his injuries and recovery plans was an additional distraction that Yuna was unfortunately grateful for.

“He’s all over the place, but when he woke up the first few things he remembered were late 2016.”

They were just a few doors down from Shane’s room when they all came to a stop. Ilya had a hand over the bottom half of his face.

He muttered a short string of things in Russian that she couldn’t understand but had spent enough time around him to recognize as most likely being curse words. “This day haunts me,” he said, suddenly switching to English.

Yuna shot a look to David. He just shrugged.

Two nurses exited Shane’s room, that was as many as had been in there when Yuna left to give him some privacy before. “We should be able to head back in now,” she said, pivoting.

She was pulled to a stop by a hand on her upper arm. Ilya. His face was blank in a way that Yuna had never seen before, or, at least, not without a television screen separating them and coming on a decade of everything changing.

“I cannot go in. Not right now or just not with you.”

“I- what?”

“If he remembers what you think he remembers, he cannot see me and you in same place. Will only make things worse. For him.”

Yuna’s jaw was far too slack for her to respond. David stepped in. “Ilya, I know this is a lot but nothing Yuna has told us has indicated that the doctors think this is serious or long lasting. Shane is going to be okay.”

“I know.” His face was moving faster than she could read it. “There are things that are hard for him right now. Things we have not had to think about in a long time. Is before he even-“

“Even?” Yuna’s heart fell to the floor, then down several more stories. Shane’s first memory was of Rose. His girlfriend. “Before Shane could even say he was gay.”

David made a sound before Yuna’s hand found his wrist.

“No,” Ilya said, “he is right. We were… involved-“ Yuna briefly, traitorously, remembered another word none of them were allowed to use- “but does not mean things were not difficult for him to think about. He thinks too much.”

It hurt, to consider a Shane that had to hide behind fake names and sneaking into hotel rooms secretly. To remember a time when Ilya was Rozanov, an antagonist to Shane’s rise to stardom that could get under anyone’s skin. Shane’s more than anyone else.

Or so they thought.

Even with his mind a little jumbled- just for a little bit, he had remembered a few more odd details- he and Ilya were important to each other. He- the both of them probably- wasn’t able to say it, maybe not even think it, but he loved Ilya. And knowing he wasn’t the only person on the planet who knew that information would not be a comfort, it would be heart attack inducing.

Yuna took a long, deep breath. “Okay. Okay. So we play this a bit differently than we thought we would. Ilya, you’re running point. We have always done our best to know Shane, but right now you know best what he needs from us so we don’t distress him in our effort to comfort and soothe.”

“Really?” It was almost laughable how earnest his disbelief was.

“You are still his husband, none of us forgot that.” It was perhaps a little crass, but blunt was a language of love between Ilya and Shane now that they had learned to and were able to speak freely with each other. “So who goes in first?”

“You have already been in there, and he knows David is on his way?” Yuna nodded. “Then you go in first, do whatever you would have done back then. And when you leave, make sure he knows you will be reasonably far away for some time. Going for food or something.”

So that Ilya could slip in without Shane worrying about them walking back in.

He was completely correct, but Yuna hated the plan.

“I don’t want to leave you out here alone. That- that’s just wrong. You’ve been waiting to see him wake up properly for days.”

“He will be fine. He will be with people who love him. And when he is fine, I am okay.”

This is how they lived, for so long. Stolen moments and hoping the other one was being taken care of by other people because they weren’t able to do it themselves. Yuna would comfort Shane for him and for Ilya. And when Shane’s brain caught up with him, she would make sure Ilya was right back where he was supposed to be.

“I will be right here,” Ilya said when neither Yuna nor David spoke up. He pointed, “and he will be there. Ten feet, something like that. Then I will go in and see him myself.”

Alone. Hidden.

They didn’t have to live like this anymore. But once upon a time they did.

Yuna pulled Ilya into a hug. “Don’t forget that we are here for you too.”

Shane’s eyes fluttered open when her and David entered his room. The lights were still dimmed, the machine to his left beeped.

“Hey, Dad. Welc’m to the p’rty.”

Their party was missing one. Yuna sunk back into the chair she was in when Shane first woke up.

“Welcome back,” David said, “you gave us quite the scare.”

“‘M fine. M’stly. Head still cloudy. M’ssing stuff. Time.”

Yuna pulled Shane’s hand into hers. “Are you feeling any better?”

“Maybe. Tir’d.”

“Have you been able to remember anything new?”

Shane waved vaguely with his free hand. “Some. All pieces. Sm’ll. None ‘f it makes s’nse.”

Yuna and David took over most of the talking from there. Shane faded in and out a little but never actually fell asleep. He piped up a couple of times, brief moments and facts that came to mind as they spoke. Nothing substantial or too recent.

He cut himself off a couple of times, or changed the subject quickly enough he might as well not have been talking about it in the first place. It was almost natural how he did it, she probably would have missed it if she didn’t know to keep an ear out. Ilya related things. Things that would make him happy and comforted, but he wasn’t able to allow himself to have him right then.

Time passed without her permission. Yuna didn’t want to occupy all of Shane’s wakeful time while Ilya was relegated to the hallway. They needed each other.

“We’ve been eating the hospital food for a couple of days,” David said after Yuna gave him a look, “it isn’t exactly the best. Why don’t your mom and I go grab you something decent and you try to get a little shut eye?”

Shane blinked between them and all Yuna had to offer in return was a weak smile. It did the trick, at least as far as Shane was willing to display in his current headspace. “‘K. Wake me wh’n you’re b’ck.”

“We will.”

Ilya was leaning against the window into Shane’s room when they slipped out. The blinds on Shane’s side separated them. It was almost poetic really, the barrier between them was clear but obscured only on one side.

“How is he?”

“Still out of it, he remembered bits and pieces when David and I were talking to him.”

Ilya nodded. His shoulders froze mid-way through rolling them, the unabashed worry and brief flickers of familiarity melted off of his face. He was turning himself off, pulling his old walls back up. Not all of the way, but knee height at least.

“My turn,” he muttered.

Yuna pulled him in for a hug before he stepped for the door.

It was one thing for Yuna to live through this now, sitting at her son’s bedside while having to keep the best thing in his life away from him, but at least she knew it wasn’t real. Not in the long run anyway. She sat there quietly but she had also been at their wedding, knew what team they played for, and knew that they had managed to get everything they deserved after all that they had been through.

The Shane in that hospital room right then and the version of Ilya he had transformed himself into to walk in that room, when they lived through this the first time around, nothing was guaranteed. Nothing good anyway, everything terrible was practically inevitable if they slipped up even the tiniest amount. They didn’t even have each other, not then, not really.

Ilya softly shut the hospital room door behind them, cautious. It was everything they didn’t have to be anymore. Just the day before that door had stayed open as a handful of their teammates and SAPs were in and out, Ilya was a fixture at Shane’s bedside that whole time but he was far from covert.

“This is wrong.” David sighed. “Us here… them…”

“We can’t overwhelm Shane right now, as good as it is in the end, the whole story- or any of it really- would just send him spiraling. He’s barely been awake an hour and he’s still loopy. I don’t like it anymore than you do.” Yuna pulled her arms tight around herself. “He’s just a little mixed up right now. We’ll be back in there with them in no time.”

Because that was the reality of their lives. Because they got to have this.

Yuna and David were only getting a small, diluted, taste of what they had really gone through all of those years ago. They had been there at the time, trying to help Shane in whatever way they could but they hadn’t known. Hadn’t been able to support him with the most difficult part of his life.

“Is this what it was like for them the whole time?”

“More or less I’d assume. But Ilya knows they both love each other.”

“And Shane doesn’t.”

“They lived like that for years.” Something finally clicked. “Shane’s first memory wasn’t Rose. The first thing he mentioned was playing against Boston. It’s been so long, I can’t believe I glanced over that so quickly. Boston back then meant Ilya,” she laughed, hollow but relieved, “he might not know where they end up but it's always Ilya.”

“He remembered cottage, the first time.” Ilya had ushered them back inside after Shane drifted off. “So we can all be here when he wakes.”

“Anything more?”

“No. He would have said. He was still worried about me being here but I promised we were discreet in getting me in.”

Ilya had been attempting to bribe the nurse doing his stitches and anyone else who looked like they might have known something about Shane’s status since he had been taken for scans when Yuna and David had first met them at the hospital. The whole ER was very aware that Ilya was extremely anxious to know how his husband was doing even when there was no update to give.

Discreet he had not been.

“How are you doing?” Yuna stopped behind his chair, her hand rubbing his shoulder. “With all of this?”

“Am… okay. Will talk to Galina, probably, but will be fine.” His eyes softened when they dropped back to Shane. “He will be all better soon.”

Shane didn’t wake for a few hours. His doctor said that was to be expected but to check in as soon as he woke up on his own. Yuna was getting their daily vending machine necessities when David texted for her to come back.

“Hi, Mom.” His voice sounded better, more clear and stronger.

“Hi, Shane. How are things upstairs?”

Shane snorted. His hand was locked in one of Ilya’s while Ilya used his free hand to run a finger along his arm. Magnets, the two of them. “Might still be down a couple of pieces, but we think it's all there.”

“Good.” For the first time since Shane woke up- maybe since she had gotten the call about the accident- Yuna breathed. “That’s good.”

“I’m sorry I worried you.” Shane wasn’t talking to her. “I hate that I forgot us.”

Ilya was shaking his head. “No, no. Is not your fault. And you did not forget, just put the memories in the wrong place for a bit.”

“Misplaced. We can go with that I guess.”

The doctor dropped by again, they didn’t need to do anymore tests but they were going to keep Shane at least one more night for observation. If he was still doing well in the morning they would be able to take him home.

Ilya and Yuna nodded along to the words but David handled the few follow up questions that came with the news. Shane had a couple of his own but nothing had changed in his long term recovery plan so there wasn’t much left to clarify.

The doctor left and it was just the four of them in the room. Yuna and David on one side of Shane’s bed and Ilya right where he was supposed to be beside Shane.

Yuna shared a look with David when the two boys got lost in their own world. The look wasn’t dissimilar to the one they shared that very first day at their cottage.

Knowing, but always still learning the depth of the love shared by their boys.

Things were back to normal. They were okay.
